How Asake Became the Center of the World’s Most Influential Music Scene

One of the first things you notice upon meeting Asake is his name—all five letters of the Nigerian singer’s stage moniker are tattooed in big, unmissable ink across his neck.

For another entertainer, this might imply bold vanity and solipsism; for the 29-year-old artist, it symbolizes determination. “In Nigeria, if you have a tattoo on your neck, you can’t work anywhere,” Asake explains. “I can’t work for any company. I can’t sell anything.” Asake got the tattoo at a time when he felt especially discouraged, beaten down, and unsure about this music thing. “I was tired,” he recalls. “I felt like, I don’t want to keep trying.” His response to those feelings of doubt? To double down and give himself no other option. To get the tattoo as he was still becoming the Asake we know now—the chart--topping Afrobeats singer poised to be the genre’s next big crossover star—was to essentially lock himself into staying the course, and conquering. There could be no other move.

Much has been made of Asake’s so-called meteoric rise, how he burst onto the Afrobeats scene with his debut album, 2022’s Mr. Money With the Vibe, and hasn’t stopped climbing to new heights since. It didn’t feel so quick to Asake. “You have to understand: I got there in two years, but I’ve been working for years,” he says. “People are counting the days you’re successful. They don’t count the days you’ve been working toward it. Nobody gives a fuck about that.”

We’re sitting in the rooftop lounge at the West Hollywood Edition hotel, overlooking an uncharacteristically dreary city wrapping up its fifth straight day of rain. Asake’s spirits are hardly dimmed. He just attended his first Grammys ceremony, where he was nominated for the inaugural awarding of best African music performance. He lost to Tyla, for her inescapable smash hit “Water,” but he isn’t pressed. “It’s not a loss for me,” he tells me, explaining that he was excited to be there and soak in the energy of a new experience. “I might just get more next year. But in my head I was not even taking it too seriously. I appreciate the fact that they nominated me—I won’t lie, that’s a lot to me. Even me, I didn’t see that coming this soon. I’m relaxed about it. Maybe because I know there will be a day that win will come.”

Asake, who was born Ololade Ahmed—Asake is his mother’s name—has got his dreads tucked neatly under a Dad hat that he’s pulled low, just above his big, piercing eyes. Emblazoned on the hat is the phrase “I Got Lucky.” Asake’s good fortune started when the songs he’d been making in school, and then out of it, gained traction in Lagos. Gauging the response, he made more songs, including the track that would soon become his breakout hit, “Mr. Money,” which caught the attention of Olamide, the veteran Nigerian recording artist and label founder responsible for helping many Afrobeats artists achieve mainstream success. Asake put out an EP in 2022 with an Olamide feature and the hit song “Sungba,” which teed up a major-label deal: Empire wanted a full-length album, and quickly.

Afrobeats was suddenly the hottest sound on the global music scene, gaining rapid momentum in the US with the mainstream success of stars like Burna Boy, Tems, and Wizkid. Of course, pop music has a nasty habit of narrowing the playing field when a subgenre goes wide; tons of new artists bubble up, but there’s apparently room for only so many superstar representatives at one time. How, then, has Asake broken through? For one, his music is a thrilling mash-up of several different regional influences: He sings in his native Yoruba tongue, while weaving in South African amapiano house sounds alongside the typical up-tempo rhythms of Afrobeats to create a style closer to fuji, the Yoruba music popularized by artists like Barrister in the 1970s, whom Asake cites along with Fela Kuti, as an influence. Reverse engineering a new sound out of several was hardly his intent but rather just a natural product of his upbringing. “My music is just me,” Asake says. “It’s not something I can really explain. The thing is, I feel like the kind of music I listened to while growing up shapes who I am.”

He tells me that he’s in a constant search for higher evolution. “I always want to step it up,” Asake says, growing animated. “And I love it.” He’s talking now of his creative process and the hunger to grow as an artist. “It’s a bit stressful. Trying to get better is like having armor and scissors, and carving yourself. So it takes bone, it takes flesh. But at the end of the day, I know what always makes sense for me is, after all the stress, when I drop it and people say, ‘Wow.’ ” That, he says, is the feeling he’s chasing.

On the stage Asake is chasing a particular sort of vibe too. His live-wire concert style has earned his shows a reputation for their grandiosity and energy. He plays with a full band, and the videos of his shows that go viral feature things like Asake throwing himself into crowds, or him smashing a guitar.

A born performer, Asake used fashion as a kid to express himself: “Putting pieces together, trying to be different among everybody.” That spirit persists in a wild sartorial style that today features bursts of bright colors and funky remixes of traditional pieces—like the pinstripe suit and expressionist--style tie he wore on his last album cover. It’s chaos tempered by taste; proof of his talent for stirring styles together.

His approach to music is similar. Inspiration came first from his parents and the culture he grew up in, but Asake was drawn to dancing before singing, and says he has no great desire to be in front of the camera. At university he studied art, theater, and film directing, and taught dance. He jokes with bracing honesty that he switched from dancing to singing because that’s where the real money is. Lamenting the lack of opportunities for dancers, I point out that there should be a Grammy Award acknowledging choreography; without missing a beat Asake dryly retorts that if that were the case, “they might just reward one white guy who started dancing two years ago.”

Despite his high-octane performance style, offstage Asake is reserved—eager to recede into the background and be left to his own devices, a showman who would rather keep to himself. He seems allergic to a lot of the behavior you might associate with ascendant stardom. When we talk about his Grammys experience, I jokingly ask if he was one of the many celebrities queued up in the theme-park-length line that formed around Beyoncé during every commercial break. “I’ll never do that,” he says, laughing. “I love Beyoncé, but I’ll never stress myself for any human, or make myself feel important in front of any human.”

He prides himself on his ability to read people, and their energies, almost instantly—a talent that seems so far to have been helpful in achieving success in the music business. “I can tell when I see somebody with pure mind, pure heart, good intentions,” he says, thinking of an interaction recently caught on video as he met 21 Savage for the first time. The commotion of the moment made hearing and talking impossible, but that didn’t matter. “I didn’t understand one thing he said to me, because there was a lot going on,” Asake says. “But I could tell he’s a very real person and he’s my kind of person.”

Given the enormous influence of Afrobeats right now, it’s easy to surmise that if Asake maintains his current trajectory, he could become one of the hottest singers on the planet before too long. The artistic evolution that occurred, quickly, between his first and second albums was striking to critics. The debut, Mr. Money, was marked by a wave of feel-good anthems, while last summer’s Work of Art showed Asake wrestling in real time with the changes wrought by money, fame, and success. Most interestingly, he felt compelled to deflate the mounting mythmaking that was developing around him. About the debut record, he says, “I wanted to be myself—that guy that wants money, that wants to go to the strip club, that wants to party, smoke, chill.” With the follow---up, he wanted to plumb a little deeper. “People don’t really know me because I’m quiet,” he says. “So everybody started seeing me as mystery. Work of Art is just for them to know me. You have to understand I’m human, but you can’t just deny the heart in me.”

He’s at work on his third album now, surely aware that it will be greeted with even more anticipation thanks to the Grammy nomination and his growing acclaim. He appears thrilled by the chance to change and grow and defy expectations. “I’ll never limit myself on one thing. I might wake up tomorrow and tell you I want to do an all reggae album. Maybe that’s where God just directs me to,” he says with a shrug. “For me to be able to do Mr. Money and people love it, that means it is inside me. It’s just for me to try to always bring it out, and be focused and always do it. It is inside you. I always say any artist that make a hit song—they can always make 40,000 hit songs. But it’s just like, if you forget yourself, then you can’t make the song again. The problem is not to forget who you are.”

He returns to that idea like a mantra. It’s a chief concern of Asake’s, and has been before he started to get famous: His first tattoo, even before the neck tat, was the phrase “Stay real,” written across both of his hands. He’s noticed that it’s a goal that’s made harder in an environment like Los Angeles, a place that can “trigger you to be more than what you are” and where he spends time for work when he’s not in Lagos. “But I feel like everybody’s going through the same thing in this place. People find it hard to be normal, to be original.” Asake tells me that his ultimate prayer is that he makes his dreams of fame come true, without ever losing the common touch. He wants to be “so rich and so big and so powerful,” he says, while retaining the skill to “be around people, and be comfortable.”

Maybe it’s a luxury afforded to someone whose dividends seem to have paid off quickly, but Asake seems remarkably relaxed for someone at the precipice of such a big moment. He admits that he’s not in a hurry. “Anything that requires time is going to be the best,” he says. “I’m telling you, my bro. What people are scared of is patience. People are scared. But if you can absorb, if you can be patient and have time, he who eats last, eats best.”

“I’m just on my journey,” he says serenely as the last little bit of light peeking through the storm clouds fades away to dusk. “If I tell you I know the things I’m planning or waiting for, I’m just lying.” Now we’re starting to test the limit of believable nonchalance for an artist this successful, I point out. He relents—there is, of course, a loose plan that he’s keeping close to the vest. “I can’t sit down and be telling you my five-year plan,” he says, smirking mischievously. “But, I do have one. To be in this position, you have to have a plan.”

Ahmed Ololade (born January 13, 1995) is a Nigerian Afrobeats singer and songwriter, better known as Asake or Mr. Money, who is signed to YBNL Nation. Asake’s revealed the origin of his stage name in a February 2022 interview with All Music , saying:

The name is from my mum. My mum used to be a teacher at my school then. You know how students do it? Instead of them calling me Omo Asake. Omo means the child of Asake. I don’t know how they edited the Omo out of it and started calling me Asake. And I love her so much so I felt like I had to keep the name.

He enjoyed dancing in his youth, specialized in cultural dances, and was the drummer in a high school musical band, before graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre & Performing Arts.

Asake spent years honing his craft until 2020, when he released his first single, “Lady,” which was warmly received by listeners. Given the excellent feedback on “Lady,” he followed it up with his second single, “Mr. Money” which catapulted him to a significantly larger audience, this led to the release of his debut EP, Ololade Asake, in 2022, which included other hit singles like “Omo Ope” and “Sungba.”

Asake is the epitome of a Nigerian Afrofusion singer who has won the hearts of many with his incredible lyrical prowess as well as his voice. He’s also the epitome of an artist who uses his songs to inspire people during their struggles:

My music talks about life in general. I grew up in a neighborhood that is considered dangerous, a neighborhood where everyone wakes up to hustle for their daily meals. It taught me how to survive in good times and bad times. So I draw inspiration from my real-life experiences to encourage everyone who thinks their present reality is constant; I want them to always remember that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

With his 2022 club anthem singles like “Sungba (Remix),” “Terminator,” “Joha,” “Dull,” and “Organise,” as well as being featured on successful songs like “Bandana,” Asake experienced a turning point in his career in 2022 where he also won an honor for Breakout Artist of the Year during the eighth Afrima edition.

A portrait of the Nigerian singer Asake.

The Nigerian singer Asake crashed into African music’s upper echelon as an innovator in street pop, a sound born in the twenty-tens that brought the swagger of hip-hop closer to the struggles of inner-city Lagos. His story was local, but his methods were much broader: as one of the earliest West African adopters of the South African house form amapiano, Asake took the genre’s rubbery underpinning, the log drum, and affixed its rhythms to choral chants and the fuji music of the Yoruba people. Since finally cracking the code of this throbbing style on the 2022 hit single, “Mr. Money,” he has released a new album each year; his latest, “Lungu Boy,” out this month, seems to look out at Afro-pop and its reverberations and point to Asake at a convergence of the diaspora. (Madison Square Garden; Aug. 30.)

How Asake became the centre of the world’s most influential music scene

Asake standing with a large red loudspeaker

One of the first things you notice when meeting Asake is his name – all five letters of the Nigerian singer’s stage moniker are tattooed in big, unmissable ink across his neck.

For another entertainer, this might imply bold vanity and solipsism; for the 29-year-old artist, it symbolises determination. To get the tattoo as he was still becoming the Asake we know now – the chart-topping Afrobeats singer poised to be the genre’s next big crossover star – was to essentially lock himself into staying the course, and conquering.

They don’t count the days you’ve been working towards it. Nobody gives a fuck about that.”

We’re sitting in the rooftop lounge at the West Hollywood Edition hotel, overlooking an uncharacteristically dreary LA wrapping up its fifth straight day of rain. I appreciate the fact that they nominated me – I won’t lie, that’s a lot to me. Even me, I didn’t see that coming this soon. I’m relaxed about it. Maybe because I know there will be a day that win will come.”

Asake, who was born Ololade Ahmed – Asake is his mother’s name – has got his dreads tucked neatly under a dad hat that he’s pulled low, just above his big, piercing eyes. Emblazoned on the hat is the phrase “I Got Lucky.” Asake’s good fortune started when the songs he’d been making at school, and then out of it, gained traction in Lagos. Gauging the response, he made more songs, including the track that would soon become his breakout hit, “Mr Money,” which caught the attention of Olamide, the veteran Nigerian recording artist and label founder responsible for helping many Afrobeats artists achieve mainstream success. Asake put out an EP in 2022 with an Olamide feature and the hit song “Sungba,” which teed up a major-label deal: Empire wanted a full-length album, and quickly.

Afrobeats was suddenly the hottest sound on the global music scene, gaining rapid momentum in the US with the mainstream success of stars like Burna Boy , Tems , and Wizkid. Of course, pop music has a nasty habit of narrowing the playing field when a subgenre goes wide; tons of new artists bubble up, but there’s apparently room for only so many superstar representatives at one time. How, then, has Asake broken through? For one, his music is a thrilling mash-up of several different regional influences: he sings in his native Yoruba tongue, while weaving in South African amapiano house sounds alongside the typical up-tempo rhythms of Afrobeats to create a style closer to fuji, the Yoruba music popularised by artists like Barrister in the 1970s, whom Asake cites along with Fela Kuti, as an influence. Reverse engineering a new sound out of several was hardly his intent, but rather just a natural product of his upbringing.

Trying to get better is like having armour and scissors, and carving yourself. So it takes bone, it takes flesh. But at the end of the day, I know what always makes sense for me is, after all the stress, when I drop it and people say, ‘Wow.’” That, he says, is the feeling he’s chasing.

On the stage Asake is chasing a particular sort of vibe too. His live-wire concert style has earned his shows a reputation for their grandiosity and energy. He plays with a full band, and the videos of his shows that go viral feature things like Asake throwing himself into crowds, or him smashing a guitar. The wild popularity of these shows means they often sell out; in 2022, two people died and several were injured after a crowd tried to gain entrance to London’s O2 Academy Brixton while Asake was performing. (The show was cancelled shortly thereafter, and Asake, who said in a statement at the time that he was “overwhelmed with grief,” paid tribute to the victims when he played in London last year.)

A born performer, Asake used fashion as a kid to express himself: “Putting pieces together, trying to be different among everybody.” That spirit persists in a wild sartorial style that today features bursts of bright colours and funky remixes of traditional pieces – like the pinstripe suit and expressionist-style tie he wore on the cover of his last album. It’s chaos tempered by taste; proof of his talent for stirring styles together.

His approach to music is similar. Inspiration came first from his parents and the culture he grew up in, but Asake was drawn to dancing before singing, and says he has no great desire to be in front of the camera. At university he studied art , theatre, and film directing, and taught dance. He jokes with bracing honesty that he switched from dancing to singing because that’s where the real money is. Lamenting the lack of opportunities for dancers, I point out that there should be a Grammy Award acknowledging choreography; without missing a beat Asake drily retorts that if that were the case, “They might just reward one white guy who started dancing two years ago.”

Despite his high-octane performance style, offstage Asake is reserved – eager to recede into the background and be left to his own devices, a showman who would rather keep himself to himself. He seems allergic to a lot of the behaviour you might associate with ascendant stardom. When we talk about his Grammys experience, I jokingly ask if he was one of the many celebrities lined up in the theme-park-length queue that formed around Beyoncé during every commercial break. “I’ll never do that,” he says, laughing. “I love Beyoncé, but I’ll never stress myself for any human, or make myself feel important in front of any human.”

Kit Harington is doing the work

He prides himself on his ability to read people, and their energies, almost instantly – a talent that seems so far to have been helpful in achieving success in the music business.

Most interestingly, he felt compelled to deflate the mounting myth-making that was developing around him. About the debut record, he says, “I wanted to be myself – that guy that wants money, that wants to go to the strip club, that wants to party, smoke, chill.” With the follow--up, he wanted to plumb a little deeper.

I might wake up tomorrow and tell you I want to do a reggae album. Maybe that’s where God just directs me to,” he says with a shrug. “For me to be able to do Mr. Money and people love it, that means it is inside me. It’s just for me to try to always bring it out, and be focused and always do it. It is inside you. I always say any artist that makes a hit song – they can always make 40,000 hit songs.

He’s noticed that it’s a goal that’s made harder in an environment like LA, a place that can “trigger you to be more than what you are” and where he spends time for work when he’s not in Lagos. “But I feel like everybody’s going through the same thing in this place. People find it hard to be normal, to be original.” Asake tells me that his ultimate prayer is that he makes his dreams of fame come true, without losing the common touch.

He relents – there is, of course, a loose plan that he’s keeping close to his chest. “I can’t sit down and be telling you my five-year plan,” he says, smirking mischievously. “But, I do have one. To be in this position, you have to have a plan.”

Asake Expands His Street-Pop Empire With ‘Work of Art’

By Madzadza Miya

Madzadza Miya

Asake has established himself as the best new artist on the Nigerian pop scene, thanks to an innovative street-pop sound that fuses choir-like, crowded backing vocals with traditional Nigerian melodies and amapiano rhythms. Last year, he made three appearances on Rolling Stone ’s Best Afropop songs of 2022 list, with “Sungba (Remix),” “Joha,” and his show-stealing feature on Fireboy DML’s “Bandana.” Less than a year since his highly acclaimed debut, Mr. Money With the Vibe , the singer-songwriter has delivered his sophomore LP, Work of Art, which is easily the most important music he’s made to date.

Building on the sound of his debut, amapiano drums and basslines, shakers, and synths coupled with guitars, saxophones, and violins permeate the album. Asake’s blend of amapiano and Afropop (created with his go-to producer-engineer Magicsticks) has placed him at the forefront of Nigerian artists who have adopted a similar stylistic approach. He declares his love for the South Africa-birthed genre and the energy it induces on the explicitly titled banger “Amapiano.” He opens the song with the lyrics, “Amapiano, piano/Issa big vibe, all the girls them know/Steadily, steadily/Heavily, we are getting lit,” chanted as if they are an incantation. Asake has already proved that his breakthrough was more than earned. With Work of Art, he solidifies his status as a street-pop superstar.

Asake

The summer may be coming to a close, but the high-profile releases from some of the giants of African music don’t appear to be slowing down at all.

Asake continues pushing his own sonic boundaries, tapping an array of international collaborators — including Travis Scott , the UK’s Stormzy , and Brazil’s Ludmilla — for his third studio album, Lungu Boy , a triumph of both expanding musical horizons and fully embracing your status as an innovator on the scene. The Nigerian hitmaker scored his first No. 1 on Billboard ‘s U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart with “Active,” featuring Scott.

Omah Lay

Omah Lay’s ‘Moving’ Story Behind His New Single, Working With Tyla & Justin Bieber & More |…

Trending on billboard.

Asake feat. Wizkid, “MMS”

Asake waxes philosophical on “MMS,” a highlight from Lungu Boy which stands for “Mr. Money Sound.” Asake chants “O ye ọlọun” in the chorus (meaning God understands in Yoruba) over P.Priime’s jazzy production, as he restores faith in listeners who feel overwhelmed with life’s twists and turns by reminding them about the path God has already put them on. Meanwhile, Wizkid reflects on losing himself, especially after the death of his mother last August, and finding his purpose as one of Afrobeats’ brightest stars. “As a young striving artist in Lagos, I have always been waiting for the right song, so when the opportunity came it was a no-brainer,” Asake told Apple Music about collaborating with one of his “musical inspirations.”

JayO, “Suns Out”

JayO reworks the “suns out, buns out” summer slogan for the hook of his latest seasonal anthem. Skittering hi-hats and hypnotic synths, courtesy of producers WHOSDAT and RZ, underline the British-Nigerian AfroR&B artist’s smooth melodies. “Suns Out” is sure to soundtrack the last day parties of the summer (ugh, don’t remind us it’s almost over).

After co-writing Darkoo’s summer smash “Favourite Girl” – which features Rema on its recent remix – British-Nigerian singer-songwriter Efosa drops his own sensual number. On “FEEL IT,” Efosa makes the case for why a woman should be with him, with his suave vocals doing most of the convincing. The drill-esque syncopated drums mimicking his heartbeat (“Do you feel it?” he repeatedly asks her) give the ballad’s woozy synths an upbeat edge.

Omah Lay, “Moving”

Omah Lay pursues happiness while struggling with hardships on his latest single “Moving,” from his sophomore album Clarity of Mind , which is slated for release this winter. The propulsive percussion and resonant rhythms drive the track’s sense of urgency, which reaches a fever pitch at the bridge when he chants, “You can tell that I ran out of time/ Unavailable a lot of times.” And the affecting music video gives “Moving” a more profound meaning. “I am telling the story of how illegal immigrants travel to Europe through the desert, through Sahara…. Home is really bad where we can’t stay at home,” he said in a recent Billboard News interview . “I’m telling the story of the whole world, where everybody’s looking for some place to find peace of mind, some place to just call home and feel relaxed.”

Thisizlondon, Ayra Starr & 6LACK, “PINACOLADA”

Thisizlondon taps frequent collaborator Ayra Starr and 6LACK for his debut single “PINACOLADA,” crafting a tantalizing concoction of Starr’s self-confident, vibrant delivery and 6LACK’s laidback R&B vocals that he’s lent to plenty of other Afropop records, like the remixes of Omah Lay’s “Damn” and Spinall and Fireboy DML’s “Sere.” “I wanted to create a vibe that captures the essence of summer — something that’s both chill and energizing,” Thisizlondon said in a press release.

Mr. Money Worldwide has finally arrived at the peak of his powers — and he’s clearly having fun. No song off his excellent new album exemplifies that better than “Whine,” in which producer Sak Pase flips Mary J. Blige’s 1992 classic “Real Love” into a joyful celebration of the ecstasies of love, and Brazilian singer Ludmilla adds a South American flair and a largely Portuguese verse to a track that is positively bursting with vibes. It’s the most euphoric track of his career so far.

Asake feat. Stormzy, “Suru”

This isn’t the first time Asake has linked up with a British rapper — and not even the only instance on this album — but this collaboration with Stormzy is a deeply emotional appreciation of how far each of them have come to reach where they are, and an acknowledgment of the sacrifices that were made by those around them along the way. It’s summed up by the first line of Asake’s hook — “My mama tell me say surulere ,” surulere meaning “patience is rewarding” in Yoruba — and each of their verses, which center on their families’ role in their success. But maybe the best line is in the outro, when Stormzy acknowledges the hard work, too: “This was not a dream, it was more like a plan I believed in.”

Darkoo feat. Rema, “Favourite Girl”

We featured Darkoo’s original version of “Favourite Girl,” which featured Dess Dior, back in May . But this new remix with Rema brings the track to even greater heights, as the Afro Rave leader adds his own flavor with an exuberant verse that oozes self-confidence. The remix transforms what was already a great song into one that will fill dance floors to capacity for years to come — and is one of the best songs of the summer.

Oxlade has always had a great ear for melody, and a talent for engaging with unexpected harmonies and layers in his vocals. “IFA” is very much in that lineage, as he croons over a laid-back Afrobeats drum pattern. But it’s the Congolese icon Fally Ipupa who comes through and takes this song to the next level, with his distinctive tenor bringing an entirely different flavor as he croons in French of a woman he would love to keep. It’s a great team-up, and a reminder that Oxlade remains one of the more creative hitmakers of his generation.

Alpha P feat. Olamide & Thisizlondon, “W”

The young Nigerian singer Alpha P taps two of the biggest names around for this wistful love song, in the YBNL chief Olamide and the in-demand producer Thisizlondon, the latter of whom crafted the perfect vibe for Alpha’s soaring melodies. And Olamide, known for so long for his hip-hop roots, perfectly meets the moment with his verse, both melodic and filled with his patented punch lines. The track is one of the best earworms of the year by far.

Olamide Adedeji A.k.a. Olamide Badoo: The God (osha) Of Nigerian Music

Olamide Badoo

As a Nigerian entertainment journalist based in Ghana, I have long admired the multifaceted talent of Olamide Adedeji, popularly known as Olamide Badoo. His influence in the Nigerian music industry is unparalleled, and his journey from the streets of Bariga, Lagos, to becoming a global icon is nothing short of inspirational.

The Rise of a Legend Olamide Badoo is a powerhouse in the Nigerian music scene. He is not just a singer and songwriter but also a record label owner, producer, entrepreneur, international business owner, advertiser, and philanthropist. His career took off after the tragic demise of the legendary Dagrin, and Olamide has since carried the torch, continuing the dream and solidifying his status as the "god of music" (OSHA) in Nigeria.

The Meaning of OSHA In Yoruba culture, the term "OSHA" refers to a deity or godly figure. It signifies someone with immense power and influence, often revered and respected. Olamide embodies this term perfectly, as he has become a deity in the Nigerian music industry, supporting and uplifting upcoming artists to achieve their dreams.

YBNL Nation: A launchpad for Stars Olamide founded YBNL Nation (Yahoo Boy No Laptop) in 2012, and it has since become a cornerstone of the Nigerian music industry. The label has produced several superstars, including Lil Kesh, Adekunle Gold, Fireboy DML, and Asake⁶. YBNL's importance lies in its commitment to nurturing raw talent and providing a platform for young artists to shine. This has not only benefited the artists but also enriched the Nigerian music landscape.

Olamide's Approach to Advertising As an advertising agent, I am particularly fascinated by Olamide's innovative approach to advertising. He leverages his signed artists, such as the world-famous Asake, to promote brands and products. Olamide uses social media platforms, magazines, music streaming, and publishing to reach a wide audience[^10^]. His strategic use of these channels ensures maximum visibility and engagement, making him a sought-after figure in the advertising world.

A Visionary Music Producer and Grammy Aspirant

Olamide's career as a music producer and musician is marked by his relentless pursuit of excellence. He has consistently pushed the boundaries of Afrobeats and hip-hop, earning him numerous accolades and a loyal fanbase. His recent nomination for a Grammy Award alongside his signee Asake for the song "Amapiano" is a testament to his impact on the global music scene¹². Olamide's vision and dedication continue to drive his quest for international recognition, and it is only a matter of time before he secures a Grammy win.

Conclusion Olamide Badoo's journey is a testament to his talent, hard work, and unwavering commitment to the Nigerian music industry. As a journalist and blogger, I am inspired by his story and look forward to the day I can meet this incredible superstar. His legacy as a musician, producer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist will undoubtedly continue to shape the future of Nigerian music for generations to come.

The term "OSHA" in Yoruba culture refers to a deity or godly figure, symbolizing immense power and influence. Olamide's role in the Nigerian music industry embodies this concept, as he continues to support and elevate upcoming artists to stardom.
