Such a situation is called the redundancy effect , which relates to humans’ inability to process information effectively when it is presented simultaneously, orally and visually. One study indicates that people retain less information when they receive it orally and visually at the same time.
• The amount of text and number of bullet points on each slide threatens to overwhelm the audience. Presenters should always be mindful of providing the audience with breathing room to more effectively deliver the message.

6 Tips to Make Your Legal Presentations Pop

No legal presentation is ever like another..

Sometimes attorneys handle dry, complicated intellectual property matters; other times, emotional personal injury cases.

But in many years of making dynamic presentations for all kinds of hearings and audiences, our team has learned that there are a few important steps that will ensure your slides have the weight and power they deserve.

1. Don’t Be Generic

Ugh. You know that jurors have seen a standard-issue PowerPoint template a bazillion times.

When using generic templates with little personality, you risk losing your audience’s attention. Instead, try some simple customization and color to make them stand out and hold attention. Curved edges, color contrast,  gradients, and better fonts for more readable slides are a few simple ways you can customize your presentation.

…Don’t Worry, You Can Still Print Them

I know what you may be thinking – if you’re worried about printing slides with a dark background, PowerPoint does let you print in pure black and white, which is great for markups and saves on toner.

2. Make Images That Stand Out

If you’re not sure whether to go with a dark or light background, consider your content. For example, photos stand out more on a dark background.

In a bright room, text tends to be easier to read on a light background.

And if your content varies throughout the presentation and includes both text and images, consider using what we call an “accent box” – basically a block of white on a darker background. This works best for the text-heavy slides.

3. It Starts With a Great Title

Another important consideration for templates is the slide title. Aligning titles to the left margin ensures that they will start in the same spot every time, which makes them much easier to follow for readers than center aligning. Try to keep titles on one line, but if you must go onto a second line, make sure the top line is shorter than the bottom. Putting a soft return (shift+return) where you want the title to break onto the next line makes a big difference in readability.

4. Better Typography = More Readable Text

A presentation full of text slides can definitely get boring for audiences. But even the best presenters need the occasional bulleted list slide.

To keep your bullet point slides readable, be as concise as possible. One line per bullet is preferable, but if you must go onto two lines, it helps to have proper line spacing (leading) set up so that your ideas do not blur into a mass of text. Also be sure to avoid leaving a single word on the second line (we call that a widow).

Keep your font size large enough to read, but not too large. A good rule to follow is 46-52 characters per line (1.5 to 2 full alphabets). If you only have a couple bullet slides, consider using icons instead of plain circle or square bullets for additional visual impact.

5. No More Boring Icons and Stock Photos!

If you are struggling to find imagery for your presentation, don’t default to using cheesy clipart! Websites like the Noun Project , Vecteezy , Creative Commons , and Brands of the World can help you find great icons, stock photos and logos without licensing fees. (Pay attention to licensing – some icons and photos may require attribution.)

6. Test the Equipment

Our last, but perhaps most important tip – take a test run. It’s devastating to slave away on a presentation only to see it completely washed out and unreadable on the courtroom projector. Try to get into the courtroom during set up to test your slides on the equipment that will be used during your presentation.

If you can’t use the actual machine, test it on the worst projector or monitor you can find, just to be safe. This is especially true if your usual computer has a high quality monitor. For example, there is always a big difference between what we see on our MacBook screens versus typical projector screens.

• Tell them what you have told them. When you reach the end of the main body, summarise by repeating your core theme, this time with the supporting points in short, bullet point style.

Creating an Effective PowerPoint Presentation for a Legal Proceeding

PowerPoint presentations have long been used in the courtroom to deliver important arguments to a judge and jury. Although this technology is not new, many attorneys still struggle to use the software effectively. Without the right tools, even the strongest legal arguments may be lost on the audience.

The Basics: Know Your Screen

The type of screen on which your presentation will be displayed makes a significant difference in its visual clarity. An older pull-down screen in a courtroom may not be as easy to view as a large high-definition monitor. The lighting in the presentation environment also has a large impact on the screen.

After an Apple engineer accidentally left a yet-to-be-released iPhone 4G in a restaurant, Gizmodo.com paid $5,000 for the phone so that it could review and write about it. Police got a search warrant and raided the Gizmodo blogger's home, but Gizmodo challenged the seizure. This lesson explores the reporter's privilege and the legal issues involved with publishing illegally obtained information.

In 2009, a San Francisco student journalist was taking photos for a journalism class project when a fatal shooting broke out nearby. The student journalist used California's reporter shield law to challenge a police search warrant and the seizing of his cameras and other equipment. Law School Outlines and Note-Taking Tips

Law school is very different than undergrad

Your first year of law school will be unlike any previous educational experience. You may be surprised to learn that, instead of working assignments and exams throughout the semester and earning grades, your entire grade for most law school classes will be based on your final exam score. Additionally, you will prepare and learn the rules of the law outside of the classroom, on your own time, and come to class prepared to apply what you have learned.

Quickly developing a system to take notes in law school, and then translating your notes into law school outlines, will help ensure your study time is productive and reduce frustration. The habits and systems you put in place for yourself early matter greatly to your final grades, eventual class ranking and employment opportunities.

Everything starts with a good law school note-taking strategy.

Develop your law school note-taking system

There are as many note-taking strategies and systems as there are note-takers. Your system may evolve from semester to semester and maybe even from course to course. What’s important is that you find a note-taking system that works well enough for you quickly, and stick with it. These notes will help you develop your law school outlines.

Decide what goes into your law school notes

Writing, re-writing and applying key concepts and takeaways in your own words is critical to truly understanding and retaining the information you are consuming. When taking notes, remember that full transcription or regurgitation is not helping you process, apply and learn the material.

Here are some specific things that you should consider including in your law school notes:

The black-letter law

These are the specific rules of law and the elements that comprise those rules. Much of the time, you’ll be expected to learn the rules outside of class and then apply them during class discussions.

Note any exceptions or areas that are not as clear cut, whether it’s because the facts are more ambiguous and subject to interpretation or because the outcome might be different based on which rules apply to the situation.

Write out stories or scenarios (hypotheticals) to apply the law

Write out a story or a scenario to apply the rules and the elements. Applying the rules and elements to real-life context helps you truly learn and understand beyond regurgitating bullets on a page. It can also help identify areas on which you need to get more clarification. Be sure to capture any hypos your professor covers in class.

Rule evolution and changes

Note why, how and where the rule changed as well as any considerations that drove the change.

Nuances your professor focuses on (especially if she repeats something)

Even if the “why” is not apparent to you quite yet, take note if your professor repeats a phrase, topic or area of interest. Recognize recurring themes throughout the professor’s lectures. They are being repeated for a reason, and you’ll likely encounter them on midterms or final exams.

Tips to get started note-taking

Take your time

Everyone going into law school knows how to read but not everyone knows the nuances of critically reading an assigned case and thinking like a lawyer. It’s a skill that you will develop quickly, but one that needs to be learned and cultivated. Speed reading and note-taking may have worked in other aspects of your education, but it won’t do you any favors in law school.

Law is a technical language with technical meanings. When you’re reading cases and taking notes, slow down and keep a law dictionary at hand. If you don’t understand a word, stop and look up its meaning. It could make the difference in your ability to properly grasp and interpret the information you are consuming.

Go beyond writing down what your casebook or professor says to think about overarching legal concepts. Connect new topics you learn to the subjects and information you’ve already covered in the past, mentally and on paper.

Put pen to paper...or not

In general, studies show that handwriting your notes helps you better understand and retain legal concepts than typing your notes on a computer. Handwriting slows you down just enough to force you to engage more methodically with the material. If you choose this approach, make sure to find a pen that you like as well as an assortment of highlighters. You may also want to keep a separate notebook or binder for each class.

Today, many students prefer to take notes on a computer. If that’s you and you are a fast typist, resist the temptation to transcribe what your professor is saying. Instead, take time to listen and synthesize the key points raised in class. Also, make sure to turn off all of your notifications and close other windows and distractions. When it comes to note-taking software, many students use Microsoft Word or OneNote and create folders and sub-folders to organize documents by class and topic. Make sure to set up Autosave to avoid losing all of your work in the middle of class.

Develop a grouping system

Some students find that activities such as developing a color-coding system makes it easier to identify and group like information across their notes — things like cases, rules and vocab. Also, many visual learners benefit from creating a flow chart or a tree diagram to organize processes or ideas.

Many find a case nicknaming system helpful so that it’s obvious which notes are related to the same case without having to re-write the entire case out each time. Writing frequently used words and terms out fully once and then abbreviating in future uses also saves space and time.

Transition your notes to law school outlines

Effectively using your subject notes to create law school outlines is a time-honored law school tradition. Outlining is an active learning process that will pay huge dividends at final exam time. Simply put, outlining is synthesizing and meshing notes into an organized structure that is meaningful and understandable to you and that, ultimately, helps you study for law school final exams.

Law professors, law school academic support professionals and most experienced law students wholeheartedly agree that you want to start outlining early in the semester. You should be outlining no later than midway through each semester, so by October, for example, in the fall semester. This will give you a few weeks to develop your outlines and use them to study for your final exams.

Decide what goes into your law school outline

Generally, your law school outline should consist of:

• the rules from the cases you study,
• your summarized class notes,
• the professor’s hypotheticals and
• any other material that the professor has brought into discussions or alluded to in lectures.

Create your law school outline

Creating your own outline, rather than borrowing, is highly recommended. It may be time-consuming, but expressing the relevant principles of the law in your own words will help your comprehension and understanding.

As with most things, there is no one right way to create a law school outline. Here are some recommended steps to get started.

Gather information

First, gather all your foundational information into one place — case briefs, class notes, casebook and maybe a study aid like a BARBRI outline or handed-down outline. For help acquiring law school outlines that make the most sense for your classes, you can start by reaching out to your professors or to upperclassmen to share their old outline for the same course. You can work with both to build your own robust outline.

Create a framework

The table of contents in your casebook already has the makings of an outline. Use it as a map for yours. It clearly lays out the major area of law, the related subtopics and where all the cases fit into the discussion. If your professor teaches to a course syllabus rather than following a table of contents, lay out your outline using the syllabus in a similar manner.

State the rule thoroughly

Add a clear and complete statement defining the rule of law (i.e., “Battery is ….”). Do this for each rule based on what has been laid out by your professor, a case you read, information from a commercial outline or hornbook, or some other source (i.e., the Socratic Method in the classroom). It’s critical that you understand and can clearly state the rule.

Break down the rule into its elements

Next, break down the rule itself into its component parts, or elements. Each element then needs to be defined (i.e., list out all four elements of battery and what they entail). The order should follow the way in which the elements were laid out in class by your professor, or how they track in your casebook. It will serve you well on the final exam to take the time to dissect each rule in this way. You’ll likely be asked to write about element(s) of battery, for example, on the essay exam rather than the rule itself.

Follow each element with hypos

Law school exams are based around hypothetical situations. The more practice you have, the more comfortable you’ll be in applying law from cases to new hypos when you encounter them. You’ll have to grapple with unusual fact patterns and be able to determine which rule should be used to solve the problem created. The practice of illustrating how the rule works is helpful to truly understand and learn the rules of law.

Unless you believe your professor will expect you to know them, you can leave case names or citations out of your outline.

Remember, your objective is to summarize the law you have learned in one cohesive review tool that will enable you to be successful on final exam day.

Making of an Act • If it is accepted or passed, it is sent to the other house of the Parliament • The Rajya Sabha can accept it or reject it with modifications • The bill is sent to President for giving his assent santhi narayanan

Precedent According to Oxford Dictionary, Precedent is a previous instance or case which is, or may be taken as an example of rule for subsequent cases, or by which some similar act or circumstances may be supported or justified. General Classification of Law • Public Law – Law that determines and regulates the organization and functioning of states + Relation of the state with its subjects • Constitutional Law • Administrative law • Criminal law • Private Law – Regulates the relations of citizens with each other ex: law of contract, property santhi narayanan

Classification of law • Criminal law: Certain offences are considered as wrong doings against the state and are punishable by the state. How to read an Act ? Law (provisions of Act) is binding in nature on those to whom it applies – individuals, general society, corporates, firms, or any groups in the society. To regulate different subject matters, a separate law may be enacted, such as taxation, companies, environment, labour and industry matters, minimum wages, crimes, procedures of courts – both criminal and civil courts, manner of ascertaining facts by evaluating the evidence etc. santhi narayanan

Arrangement of Acts Each Act is identified with a Title such as “The Indian Contract Act, 1872”, “The Companies Act, 1956” etc. The year at the end of the name of the Act signifies the year in which it is enacted as law. Below the Title of Act, a preamble will be there which gives the purpose or object for which that Act is enacted. santhi narayanan

Layout The entire text of the Act is divided into various Sections and some Acts may also have Schedules with cross reference to a particular Section of the Act santhi narayanan

The 1st Section of any Act contains three sub-sections, namely: • (i) Short Title (This Act may be called …”The Indian Contract Act, 1872”) • (ii) Extent (it extends to the whole of India or to any part of the country or a State) • (iii) Commencement (it gives the date from which the Act commences its operation or a power is given to the Government to declare any date in future to give effect to the provisions of the Act). santhi narayanan

Contd- • Section 2: Interpretation or Definitions (of certain terms and words used in the text of the Act are interpreted or defined and that definition should be relevant for interpretation of any matter dealt in the Act). • Subsequent Sections sometimes create certain authorities to enforce the provisions of the subject matter of that Act (Income Tax Officers, Company Law Board, Enforcement Directorate, etc.) santhi narayanan

Contd- • Appellate Authorities are created within the Act to provide a chance to appeal against the actions or orders of the Enforcement Authorities of the Act. • When no Enforcement Authorities or Appellate Authorities are stated in the Act, then normal Civil Courts of the country deal with such cases. Law enforcement nationwide condemn Fraternal Order of Police's endorsement of Trump

NORTH CAROLINA (WTVD) -- The Fraternal Order of Police recently announced the group has endorsed Donald Trump for the 2024 presidential election. However, not all law enforcement supports the former President.

Durham County Sheriff Clarence Birkhead is joining over 100 law enforcement officials nationwide in condemning FOP's endorsement. He said he is endorsing Democratic nominee Kamala Harris .

In its endorsement announcement, FOP called Trump a partner and a leader, saying the organization stands with him.

During a Harris-Walz press call, Birkhead called out the group for supporting a convicted felon over a former prosecutor. He said she "understands the needs of the communities like mine, and has always had our back."

Trump recently spoke to hundreds of officers nationwide at a FOP meeting in Charlotte on Friday.

For nearly an hour, the former President spoke about his love for North Carolina and his hope to give law enforcement the power to keep communities safe. He said America's cities are under siege and vowed to change that if he becomes president again.

"We will restore public safety to our streets, we will bring back law and order to our nation," Trump said, "and we will give the heroes in blue the power to legally protect us and the respect that you deserve more than any other group of people."

WASHINGTON (CITC) — New data shows illegal vapes originating from China account for the majority of e-cigarettes used by U.S. middle and high schoolers, sparking concerns in law enforcement experts.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) last week released its latest analysis of e-cigarette use among middle and high school students. While the CDC found that e-cigarette use is down by 1.8%, the data also shows young users are still primarily going to Chinese-owned brands.

The top three e-cigarettes used by middle and high schoolers are Elf Bar, Breeze and Mr. Fog, each of which are Chinese-owned, according to the CDC. None of the three brands are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the agency has previously issued warning letters to retailers regarding unauthorized sales of each.

The three brands together made up more than 70% of youth e-cigarette use reported in the CDC analysis.

The illicit e-cigarettes, also known as vapes, are often made appealing to teenagers with fruity flavors and packaging resembling school supplies, like highlighters. Richard Marianos, a law enforcement consultant who served in the the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for nearly three decades, says young people tend to use the products to achieve "social status."

"Right now, in the underbelly of organized crime, the Chinese are making close to $300 billion a year on the backs of our kids and our communities," Marianos told Crisis in the Classroom (CITC). "If this is our number one national security concern, is China ... why aren't we doing something about it?"

Marianos said tackling the crisis will take a "unified, holistic approach" involving families, school officials and both local and federal government. He called on the FDA and ATF specifically to get involved, noting the latter's involvement is warranted regardless of whether the products are direct tobacco products.

It's high-value targets in terms of organized crime, it's a national security issue, and they're preying on our greatest resources, which are our children," he said. "And if that can't get somebody's interest, why are you in office in the first place?"

The FDA, along with the Department of Justice, announced in June the creation of a federal task force to curb sales of illegal e-cigarettes. A spokesperson for the FDA told CITC the task force is designed to "streamline" the efforts of multiple agencies, including the ATF.

A press release regarding the task force acknowledged the significant number of middle and high schoolers using e-cigarettes daily. Stefan Bjes, a former Illinois school resource officer and retired patrol sergeant, finds the trend of use particularly disturbing.

Bjes told CITC his schools a decade ago faced as little as one or two incidents involving e-cigarettes per year, but that figure now tops 300 nationwide.

"I think we need to realize that we can't discipline our way out of this," he said. "They key component is the education component. I think having parents understand the magnitude of this problem is very important."

Education starts early, though. If we're doing this in junior high, we're already too late," Bjes added.

The FDA during a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee hearing Tuesday faced accusations of "misaligned priorities" by failing to approve "less harmful alternatives" to traditional cigarettes in a timely fashion. Rep. Richard Hudson, R-N.C., claimed inaction by the FDA's Center for Tobacco Products has enabled the "illicit market" to form.

Brian King, the director of the Center for Tobacco Products, told CITC the agency has "an array of enforcement tools" at its disposal and is "committed to using them as appropriate."

"We will not stand by as bad actors place profit over the health of our nation’s youth," King said.

The FDA last month also finalized a rule raising the minimum age for certain restrictions on tobacco product sales to 21. Beginning Sept. 30, retailers will be required to verify the age of any customers under 30 seeking to buy tobacco products.

CITC reached out to the ATF for comment, but did not receive a response.
