More information »

  • Sentence type flow Pieces with good flow will make use of all four sentence types, varying them to keep the reader interested.
  • Sentence length flow Sentence length is indirectly related to sentence type, and is a good indicator of flow. Flow can be altered by adding, removing, lengthening, shortening, combining, or splitting sentences. Long sentences will be indicated by a red line on the graph. Sentences that flow poorly with their surroundings will be orange, and the source of the problem can often be found in a nearby sentence.
  • Word length flow Word length is a minor contributor to overall flow, but even minor variations are signs of good rhythm.
  • Passive Voice Index This is a measure of how frequently the passive voice is used. Consider revising your document if it scores over 100.
  • Prepositional Phrase Index This is a measure of how frequently prepositional phrases are used. Consider revising your document if it scores over 100.
  • Average sentence length Sentence length is a major contributor to the level of education required to read a body of text.
  • Sentence length standard deviation This is a measure of the amount of variation in the length of a text's sentences. In texts that have broad appeal, this tends to fall between 50 and 90% of the average sentence length. You can increase this number by making long sentences longer, and short ones shorter.
  • Sentence deviation to length ratio This is a measure of the sentence variety, and a major contributor to flow. Most novels score between 0.5 and 0.9, and popular ones often score near the high end of the range. You can increase this number by making long sentences longer, and short ones shorter.
  • Just the stats preset Use this preset when you're only interested in the stats tab. Critique and Flow will be hidden.
  • Honesty preset This preset checks for common indicators of deception, either by lying or omission, and is based on the findings of this study . Areas with high concentrations of these indicators should be viewed with skepticism. Note that the presence or absence of these indicators does not guarantee that a statement is true or false, and that the study was done on spoken communications, so it might be more applicable to interviews and speeches. As always, use your brain.
  • Doubled words A word used twice in a row may be a typo.
  • Commonly confused words This will check for the internet's most frequently confused words and notify you if it looks like you misused one. It is experimental and probably the least reliable feature. Consult a dictionary when necessary.
  • Sentences starting with the same word A word should not be used to start more than one sentence in a single paragraph.
  • Misplaced conjunctions It is considered poor style to place coordinating conjunctions at either end of a sentence. Placing a subordinating conjunction at the end of a sentence is against the rules.

It is said that one day, passive voice will bring weakness to your prose.

More information » Even more information »

  • Overwriting Words like "very" and "really" make sentences wordier and weaken your message. These can be deleted in almost all cases without affecting the meaning of the sentence.
  • Abstract words Abstract words lack specificity and overusing them can make even simple concepts difficult to understand. There are times when abstract words are desirable or even necessary; it would be difficult to write about math or programming without mentioning variables or functions, but you should use more specific terms whenever possible.
  • Wordy and redundant phrases These phrases make your writing more difficult to understand. In most cases, they can be replaced with one or two words, or even deleted.
  • Legalese These antiquated, arcane words and phrases will make your writing look like a contract.
  • Double negatives Double negatives are almost always poor style.
  • Adverbs They aren't bad in small quantities, but consider revising your document if more than 5.5% of its words are adverbs. Adverbs ending in "-ly" are considered the worst offenders.
  • Adjectives They aren't bad in small quantities. A few of the words on this list can also function as other parts of speech. You have been warned.
  • Contractions In formal writing, the use of contractions is considered a fault.

The boxer decked his opponent.

  • Profanity Profanity should not be used in formal writing outside of direct quotations.

The critic's scathing review hit the nail on the head .

  • Similes Similes and metaphors should be used sparingly. This option will detect most common types of similes.
  • "Said" replacements Some people think that these substitutes for "said" are weak or obnoxious, especially if overused.

Her dress was long , and it touched the floor.

Her long dress touched the floor.

  • Gender-specific pronouns Avoid using gender-specific pronouns in formal writing when the subject's gender is unknown.
  • Weasel words Like abstract words, weasel words and phrases lack specificity. At best, they convey uncertainty. At worst, they can be used to "weasel out" of telling the truth in a straightforward manner. When checking a document that is speculative by nature, you might want to disable this detector.
  • Third person pronouns According to this study , high concentrations of third person pronouns may indicate deception.
  • Bias language These words and phrases often show the author's bias.
  • Uncommon words Uncommon words will increase the document's reading difficulty.

Hot peppers burn my mouth, but I eat them anyway .

Since burritos taste good , I like to eat them.

  • Sentence fragments A sentence must have at least one noun and one verb. Anything that does not is a fragment, and if it occurs outside of dialog, it should probably be rewritten.
  • Long sentences Long sentences tend to be more difficult to read, making them good candidates for trimming or splitting. Alternatively, parallelism may be used to improve their readability, though this will not decrease the ARI score.

Jesse Rumball-Smith - testimonial

I just wanted to say thank you for such a great and free service, all the other grammar checkers and writing assistants I have tried don’t have nearly the depth of features let alone all available on a free subscription. As a student with little income available I am extremely grateful that unlike all others companies you don’t limit features on the free plan. This is a fantastic product and given the income I would definitely upgrade to the premium. I've let all my fellow students know about Trinka as it is seriously a life saver.

What does a proofreader do.

Working with a proofreader is the final stage of the editing process. To ensure your book is ready to hit the presses (or the digital publisher), a proofreader will step in and double-check everything. They’ll make sure that your book is free from spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, and other issues that could spoil a reader’s enjoyment of your writing.

A professional proofreader not only has a keen eye for detail, but a tried-and-true method for spotting every minor error in your text, from missing commas to misused homophones. They’ll also keep your proof free from typographical and layout issues, such as the wrong typeface in one of your chapter headings, or awkwardly spaced lines within the text.

Essentially, a proofreader should have the attention of a devoted reader and the sharp mind of an editor — seeing everything, missing nothing. But where can you find a meticulous proofreader to guarantee that every last piece of your book is in place?

Look no further, here are the professionals who can help

What is the difference between a proofreader and other types of editors?

A proofreader is different from other types of editors in that they don’t provide particularly in-depth feedback on your book — proofreaders swoop in at the end to tweak and polish, not to overhaul your content. However, this doesn’t make their job any less important! Typo-free text and a professional layout are non-negotiable if you want your book to be taken seriously by readers, and indeed by the industry as a whole.

Another key difference between proofreaders and, say, copy editors is that proofreaders consider the entire book, not just the body text. For example, a proofreader will cross-check chapter names and numbers in a table of contents. They’ll check the dedication page, the acknowledgements, and anywhere else that text appears.

And again, in print publishing, a proofreader will also look at purely aesthetic elements. They might fix odd spacing or remove widows and orphans (isolated lines on the page) for a more pleasant reading experience. Overall, they make sure your book presents as smoothly as possible — which is why, as an author, you never want to skip the final proof.

Is a proofreader the same thing as a line editor?

It depends on where you are. In the UK, a “line editor” does serve almost the same purpose as a proofreader. The only difference is that the line edit is performed on the manuscript document, while the proofread is undertaken on the formatted document just before it goes to press. So an author in the UK may have either a line editor look at their manuscript or a proofreader look at the final proof, but usually not both.

In the US and Canada, however, line editing is typically used to describe a mix between content and developmental editing — in which the primary concern is the creative substance and style. Other times it describes a slightly more detailed version of copy editing.

Needless to say, if an editor’s résumé includes “line editing,” it’s best to clarify with them directly what they mean. Fortunately, all editors on Reedsy are categorized as developmental editors, copy editors, or proofreaders, so there’s no confusion about which services they can provide.

Do I need a proofreader if I’ve already worked with an editor?

In short, yes. While developmental and copy editors will fix inaccuracies and hone your writing style, they won’t catch every single mechanical mistake — and can even accidentally introduce them in the process of editing! This is exactly why proofreaders exist: to be the last line of defense against errors in your published book.

Many authors still attempt to proofread their own books, but we would caution against this. No matter how eagle-eyed you are, your brain will inevitably skip over typos that you’ve already seen a hundred times, simply because you’ve grown accustomed to them.

Indeed, for an effective proofread, you absolutely need a fresh perspective on your text. The good news is that you’re only a few clicks away from finding one!

How to find the right proofreader for you

On the Reedsy Marketplace, you can search for professionals by genre, location, and keywords, making it easy for you to find proofreaders with experience in your category and subject matter. If you want a nonfiction proofreader with an understanding of Lovecraftian naming conventions and Australian dialects, you can find them.

Once you’ve narrowed down your shortlist, you can send your project brief to up to five proofreaders. This will be a short overview of your book, including: what it’s about, your genre and word count, and whether it’s already been edited by a professional. You can also include your budget and ideal timeline to find the perfect person to work with you logistically.

The clearer you are in communicating your needs, the more likely our proofreaders are to respond with accurate quotes. And remember, for the best chance at landing your first-choice proofreader, try to send your requests as early as possible!

Apple Intelligence

Ai diary: testing apple intelligence writing tools, and finding myself impressed.

Avatar for Ben Lovejoy

Having yesterday tried out the Siri improvements brought to us in iOS 18.1, I next decided to test the Apple Intelligence Writing Tools: Proofreading, rewriting, and summarizing.

Just for fun, I took a recursive approach to the task, and first asked AI to proofread yesterday’s piece …

One quick note, I’m using AI in this piece as an acronym for Apple Intelligence rather than Artificial Intelligence (thanks, Apple, for that unending source of confusion …).

Proofreading

AI suggested a total of six changes to my piece , of which three were duplicates – adding periods to bullet-point text. Here’s an example:

proofreader for essays

Whether or not to use periods in bullet-points is a stylistic choice – there’s no right or wrong, provided the bullet is just a single sentence. Personally, I think bulleted text looks best without them, and in this particular case I would always want to omit it because a dot at the end of an URL can confuse browsers.

However, this is a perfectly reasonable thing to flag, so good job there.

Next up was this one:

proofreader for essays

AI is perfectly correct here, as it is technically someone’s name. Now, personally I’m not a fan. Once something has passed into everyday language (like biro), then I think lower-case is perfectly acceptable, and more pleasing to the eye. However, AI was again absolutely right to flag this.

In this next example, I’d used informal phrasing to condense my summary of Siri’s response, but AI pointed out that it should have an indefinite article:

proofreader for essays

I do tend to use informal phrasing to condense this type of summarized text, especially as my use of angled brackets is itself an informal convention mostly only understood by my fellow geeks, but AI was right to flag it, and in this particular case I agree it’s the better choice.

Finally, we have this:

proofreader for essays

To which I’d risk more AI correction by responding ‘Yeah, no.’ Yes, it’s technically correct, but I think it reads horribly, so I definitely wouldn’t implement that.

Overall, though, a really excellent job.

Next, I tested the rewrite feature, taking a text message I’d sent recently. First the original:

Yeah, that’s great. It would be fantastic if we could get this done asap, as who knows what might happen in the next few weeks! Can you sort access?

And then AI’s (default) rewrite:

Yeah, that’s great. It would be fantastic if we could get this done as soon as possible, as we never know what might happen in the next few weeks! Could you please sort out access?

I expected it to change the “yeah” to “yes,” but it left that alone. It did, however, opt to spell out “asap” and to make my request more polite. A good job.

I opted for more recursiveness by asking AI to rewrite the company’s own explanation of its Writing Tools. This time I tested each of the three options available:

  • Professional

Here’s the original:

Apple Intelligence powers new Writing Tools, which help you find just the right words virtually everywhere you write. With enhanced language capabilities, you can summarise an entire lecture in seconds, get the short version of a long group thread, and minimise unnecessary distractions with prioritised notifications.

Friendly rewrite:

Apple Intelligence has created some amazing new Writing Tools that can help you find the perfect words for any writing task. With these tools, you can summarize a whole lecture in seconds, get the gist of a long group chat, and stay focused with prioritized notifications.

Professional rewrite:

Apple Intelligence powers new Writing Tools that assist you in locating the most appropriate words virtually wherever you compose. Enhanced language capabilities enable you to summarize an entire lecture in seconds, obtain the concise version of a lengthy group discussion, and minimize distractions by prioritizing notifications.

Concise rewrite:

Apple’s new Writing Tools help you find the right words virtually everywhere. Enhanced language capabilities let you summarize lectures, shorten group threads, and prioritize notifications to minimize distractions.

I’d say each of them ticks the boxes, and I was especially impressed by the concise rewrite. For comparison, here’s what ChatGPT suggested for a condensed version:

1. Concise Summary: • Apple Intelligence offers new Writing Tools to enhance language capabilities, enabling quick summaries of lectures, short versions of long threads, and prioritizing notifications to minimize distractions. 2. Very Short Summary: • Apple Intelligence’s Writing Tools help you find the right words, summarize lectures, simplify group threads, and minimize distractions with prioritized notifications. 3. Even More Condensed: • Apple’s new Writing Tools help you summarize texts, simplify threads, and reduce distractions. 4. Ultra-Condensed: • Apple’s Writing Tools enhance communication and reduce distractions.

Offering options is good, but I actually think Apple’s version is better than any of ChatGPT’s suggestions.

Summarizing

I first asked AI to summarize this Electrek piece . Here’s what it wrote:

California law enforcement cannot issue moving violations to autonomous vehicles, leading to concerns about safety and accountability. Waymo and Cruise, two major autonomous vehicle companies operating in San Francisco, have faced criticism and calls for tighter regulations due to incidents involving their vehicles. Despite claims of safety improvements, concerns remain about the potential risks associated with autonomous vehicles.

That’s honestly a really good job!

Next I tried it on Apple’s advice on maximizing the performance of your iPhone battery:

To optimize iPhone battery life, users should update iOS, adjust screen brightness, and enable Low Power Mode. Battery usage information can be viewed in Settings > Battery, allowing users to identify apps that consume significant power and adjust their settings accordingly. Users should also ensure their computer is powered on when charging their device via USB.

Again, that’s an excellent job.

Finally, I gave it a bigger challenge, and asked it to summarize the lithium battery section of the TSA’s rules on flying with batteries .

Lithium batteries with 100 watt hours or less can be carried in carry-on or checked bags, while those with more than 100 watt hours must be carried in carry-on bags with airline approval. Spare lithium batteries must be carried in carry-on bags only.

Unfortunately, that’s wrong in one very important way: You cannot normally carry lithium batteries in your checked baggage. However, it’s understandable how AI was confused by the “Yes,” and didn’t make sense of the exclamation mark and “special instructions” caveat.

ChatGPT, in contrast, gave me a “summary” which was barely shorter than the original, and when I asked for a shorter version it made exactly the same omission as Apple.

In summary(!), then, Apple is off to an impressive start here, but don’t rely on AI summaries just yet.

My first impressions

I’m seriously impressed!

The proofreading performance is already great, even in the first beta, and I’m even more impressed by the rewriting capabilities. If I were one of Grammarly’s founders, I suspect I’d have a rather sweat-soaked brow right now.

Summarizing is arguably the most challenging task for any artificial intelligence system, as you have the twin hurdles of condensing the text as far as possible, but no further. AI definitely can’t be relied on yet, but neither can ChatGPT or any of its rivals. What we can say for sure is that Apple is off to a strong start.

If you’re running the beta, have you tried the Writing Tools? If so, please share your own thoughts in the comments.

Quick Guide to Proofreading | What, Why and How to Proofread

Published on June 21, 2019 by Shona McCombes . Revised on December 11, 2023.

Proofreading means carefully checking for errors in a text before it is published or shared. It is the very last stage of the writing process , when you fix minor spelling and punctuation mistakes, typos, formatting issues and inconsistencies.

Proofreading is essential for any text that will be shared with an audience, whether it’s an academic paper, a job application, an online article, or a print flyer. Depending on your skills and budget, you can choose to proofread the text yourself, use an AI proofreader , or hire a professional.

In the publishing industry, proofreaders usually check a printed “proof copy” of the text and mark corrections using specialized proofreading marks. In other fields, though, professional proofreaders often work with digital texts and make corrections directly using the track changes feature in Microsoft Word or Google Docs.

Editing and proofreading are different steps in the process of revising a text. Editing can involve major changes to content, structure and language, but proofreading focuses only on minor errors and inconsistencies.

Often a text will go through several stages of editing before it is proofread. The table below shows some common steps in the editing process.

The four stages of editing and proofreading

Type of editing What it involves
Step 1: Content editing Revising an early draft of a text, often making significant changes to the content and moving, adding or deleting entire sections (also known as developmental or substantive editing).
Step 2: Line editing Revising the use of language to communicate your story, ideas, or arguments as as possible.

This might involve changing words, phrases and sentences and restructuring to improve the flow of the text.

Step 3: Copy editing Polishing individual sentences to ensure correct grammar, a clear , and stylistic consistency, often following the rules of a specific style guide (such as or ).

Copy editors don’t change the content of a text, but if a sentence or is ambiguous or awkward, they can work with the author to improve it.

Step 4: Proofreading Carefully checking for any remaining errors, such as misspelled words, , and stylistic inconsistencies.

In print publishing, proofreaders are also responsible for checking the formatting (e.g., page numbers and line spacing).

Do I need to go through every stage?

It depends on the type and length of text. You don’t need to strictly follow the division of tasks shown above, but a good piece of writing will nearly always go through a similar process of revising, editing and proofreading.

In the traditional publishing process, the stages are clearly divided, with different professionals responsible for each revision. A separate proofread of the final print version is necessary, especially because new typographical errors can be introduced during production.

However, in texts that don’t need to be formatted for mass printing, there is often more overlap between the steps. Some editorial services combine copy editing and proofreading into a single stage (sometimes called proof-editing), where grammar, syntax and style are addressed at the same time as minor spelling and punctuation errors (e.g., commas , quotation marks and parentheses ).

Basic proofreading skills are important for anyone who writes. For everyday texts, such as business reports, blogs, or college papers, there are some techniques you can use to proofread efficiently and effectively before sharing your work.

Edit your writing first

Before you get to the final stage of proofreading, make sure you’ve thoroughly revised and edited your work. There’s no point spending time fixing minor errors if you might later remove whole sections or rewrite paragraphs. Only proofread once you’ve got a completed final draft that you’re happy with.

Take a break from the text

When you’ve been reading and rereading the same words for hours or days, it becomes much harder to notice common mistakes . Before proofreading, set your work aside for a while so that you can look at it with fresh eyes.

Ideally you should wait at least a day or two before final proofreading, but if you’re on a tight deadline, even a half hour break can help.

Proofread a printout

Seeing your words on a printed page is another useful strategy for noticing things that might have escaped your attention on the screen. If the final version will be printed, this is also a good chance to check your formatting is correct and consistent on the page.

Use digital shortcuts

While reading from print can help you spot errors, an online proofreader can help you fix them efficiently. Most obviously, run a spell check—but don’t rely on the computer to catch every mistake.

If you notice that you’ve repeatedly misspelled a particular word, inconsistently capitalized a term, or switched between UK and US English , you can use the Find and Replace function to fix the same mistake throughout the document.

Be careful, though, and don’t use “replace all”. Click through and check every replacement to avoid accidentally adding more errors!

Learn from your mistakes

Pay attention to the errors that keep recurring in the text. This can help you avoid them in future.

Knowing what to look out for is the most challenging part of proofreading. You’ll probably notice obvious typos, but subtle mistakes in grammar and punctuation can be harder to recognize. The table below shows some of the most common errors to look out for.

What to watch out for when proofreading

Spelling and word choice confusions )  ( )
Misplaced punctuation ,
Stylistic inconsistency of terms or titles
Formatting issues and

If you lack confidence in your written English, or if you just want to ensure you haven’t missed anything in an important document, you might want to consider using a professional proofreading service.

There are two main options: you can hire a freelance proofreader, or you can send your document to a proofreading and editing company. There are various things to consider when choosing a service.

Do you only need proofreading or also editing?

It’s important to have a clear idea of how much work your text requires. People often think they only need proofreading when, in reality, the text would benefit from some level of editing as well.

If you send a proofreader a document full of grammar mistakes, confusing sentences, and difficult-to-follow paragraphs, they might decline the job or recommend a different service.

Many freelancers and companies offer both editing and proofreading, either separately (with separate pricing) or combined into one service. Make sure you understand exactly what kind of changes are included. Will the editor only correct minor errors, or will they also comment on awkward phrasings and structural issues?

Should the proofreader be specialized in your type of document?

Many different types of documents require proofreading: from literary novels to technical reports, from PhD dissertations to promotional flyers . The best choice of service is usually one that’s specialized in your type of document.

While proofreaders and copy editors generally don’t need expert knowledge of the text’s content, the process will be smoother if your proofreader is familiar with the rules and conventions of the genre you’re working in.

How much does proofreading cost?

The cost of proofreading varies widely. The price depends partly on the proofreader’s location and level of experience, the type and length of text, and the turnaround time. Rates are usually calculated per word or per hour. If the service also focuses on formatting, it may be priced per page.

How long does proofreading take?

You should try to leave plenty of time for editing and proofreading, but if you have a hard deadline, it’s important to find a service that can deliver on time.

Most companies offer various choices of deadline, but it’s best to plan a minimum of 24 hours for proofreading. The price will generally be lower if you can wait longer to have your document returned.

For very long documents, it might not be possible to complete the job in 24 hours, especially if you also need editing services. For combined proofreading and copy editing, you can expect an experienced editor to complete around 10,000–15,000 words in a single day.

How can you check the quality and reliability of the service?

Like everything on the internet, the quality of proofreading services varies widely. Do your research before you choose one. There are a few things you can check:

  • Online reviews : are they rated on independent review sites (e.g., Trustpilot ) or freelancer platforms (e.g., Upwork )?
  • Qualifications : do they have professional training and experience? If you’re using a company, how do they select and train proofreaders?
  • Customer service : are they easily contactable and responsive to inquiries?
  • Complaints policy : what happens if you’re not happy with the job? Can you get a refund or a second edit?

Editing and proofreading are different steps in the process of revising a text.

Editing comes first, and can involve major changes to content, structure and language. The first stages of editing are often done by authors themselves, while a professional editor makes the final improvements to grammar and style (for example, by improving sentence structure and word choice ).

Proofreading is the final stage of checking a text before it is published or shared. It focuses on correcting minor errors and inconsistencies (for example, in punctuation and capitalization ). Proofreaders often also check for formatting issues, especially in print publishing.

Whether you’re publishing a blog, submitting a research paper , or even just writing an important email, there are a few techniques you can use to make sure it’s error-free:

  • Take a break : Set your work aside for at least a few hours so that you can look at it with fresh eyes.
  • Proofread a printout : Staring at a screen for too long can cause fatigue – sit down with a pen and paper to check the final version.
  • Use digital shortcuts : Take note of any recurring mistakes (for example, misspelling a particular word, switching between US and UK English , or inconsistently capitalizing a term), and use Find and Replace to fix it throughout the document.

If you want to be confident that an important text is error-free, it might be worth choosing a professional proofreading service instead.

The cost of proofreading depends on the type and length of text, the turnaround time, and the level of services required. Most proofreading companies charge per word or page, while freelancers sometimes charge an hourly rate.

For proofreading alone, which involves only basic corrections of typos and formatting mistakes, you might pay as little as $0.01 per word, but in many cases, your text will also require some level of editing , which costs slightly more.

It’s often possible to purchase combined proofreading and editing services and calculate the price in advance based on your requirements.

There are many different routes to becoming a professional proofreader or editor. The necessary qualifications depend on the field – to be an academic or scientific proofreader, for example, you will need at least a university degree in a relevant subject.

For most proofreading jobs, experience and demonstrated skills are more important than specific qualifications. Often your skills will be tested as part of the application process.

To learn practical proofreading skills, you can choose to take a course with a professional organization such as the Society for Editors and Proofreaders . Alternatively, you can apply to companies that offer specialized on-the-job training programmes, such as the Scribbr Academy .

Start by addressing the hiring manager by name—you can usually find it in the job listing or on the company's website. (Here are three totally appropriate ways to find—and reach out to—the hiring manager .)

Mention specific details about the company, such as its mission, values, or recent achievements, to show that you’ve done your research. This approach not only conveys your enthusiasm but also highlights how well you align with the company’s culture and goals, helping you stand out as a dedicated candidate.

Tailoring your cover letter in this way demonstrates that you are genuinely interested in the position and not just sending out generic applications.

Use keywords from the job description

Job descriptions often contain specific keywords and phrases that reflect the skills, qualifications, and experiences the employer is seeking. Incorporating these keywords into your cover letter can significantly improve your chances of catching the hiring manager’s attention and passing through any Applicant Tracking Systems (ATSs) that scan for relevant terms.

Carefully review the job posting and identify the most important keywords, then weave them naturally into your cover letter. This not only shows that you have the qualifications they are looking for but also demonstrates your attention to detail and ability to follow instructions. (Need help? Here's how to read a job description the right way .)

Express your suitability for the role with facts and specific knowledge

Backup your claims with concrete facts and specific examples from your past experiences. Rather than making broad statements about your skills, provide detailed anecdotes that highlight your accomplishments and the impact you’ve had in previous positions.

For instance, if you’re applying for a nursing position , you might describe a situation where you successfully managed a critical patient case or implemented a new protocol that improved patient care. Quantifiable achievements , such as “Increased patient satisfaction scores by 15%,” can make a strong impression and provide clear evidence of your capabilities.

Show your passion for the healthcare industry and the specific role

Passion can be a powerful differentiator in your cover letter. Conveying your genuine enthusiasm for the healthcare industry and the specific role you’re applying for can help set you apart from other candidates. Explain what motivates you to work in healthcare and why you are particularly drawn to the role and the organization.

Share any personal experiences or stories that inspired your career choice and illustrate your commitment to making a difference in patients' lives. This emotional connection can resonate with hiring managers and demonstrate that you are not just looking for a job, but are truly dedicated to the field.

Proofread carefully to avoid any spelling or grammatical errors

A cover letter with spelling or grammatical errors can be a red flag for some hiring managers because it undermines your professionalism and attention to detail—two crucial qualities necessary to succeed in the healthcare industry.

After writing your cover letter, take the time to proofread it carefully. Read it out loud to catch any awkward phrasing or missed errors, and consider using a writing assistance tool like Grammarly to help identify mistakes.

It can also be beneficial to have a friend or colleague review your cover letter to provide a fresh perspective. Ensuring that your cover letter is error-free demonstrates your meticulousness and commitment to presenting yourself in the best possible light.

More than a thousand checks are being performed and we've only scratched the surface.

Inspired by the greatest writers

Gain access to humanity’s collective understanding about the craft of writing.

A proofreading tool that does not bark at every tree

Typely is precise. Existing tools for proofreading raise so many false alarms that their advice cannot be trusted. Instead, the writer must carefully consider whether to accept or reject each change.

We aim for a tool so precise that it becomes possible to unquestioningly adopt its recommendations and still come out ahead — with stronger, tighter prose. Better to be quiet and authoritative than loud and unreliable.

unobtrusive proofreading tool

Relax, focus, write your next masterpiece...

Writing presumes more than simply laying out words on a paper. Typely helps you get in the mood and keeps you focused, immersed and ready to write your story.

Whether you need a distraction-free environment, some chill relaxing sounds or a pomodoro timer to manage your time we got you covered.

Got questions? We have answers.

No. Typely is completely free and we plan on keeping it that way. We are considering some advanced features however that might be available under a premium plan.

The only limit we have applied thus far is on the number of characters you can submit and that is being set at a maximum of 50,000.

In theory yes but that will require a lot of work and professionals dedicated for this job. We are considering a way of letting the community participate somehow.

Typely does not do grammar checking because it's hard and almost impossible to get right. The aim for Typely is to be precise and reliable.

Preparing for the Fall 2024 FRQ doctoral competition

As per FRQ competition guidelines, the project title and abstract must be provided in French, while supporting documents (including project proposal) may be submitted in English.

FRQ deadlines are in early October (FRQ-SC sector: October 1, FRQ-NT sector: October 2, FRQ-S sector: October 3). Abstracts written in English should be prepared as soon as possible to leave time for translation.

Resources and recommendations for students applying for FRQ Fall 2024 doctoral competition:

  • FRQ – Secteur NT (B2X) doctoral guidelines ( French , English)
  • FRQ – Secteur SC (B2Z) doctoral guidelines ( French , English)
  • FRQ – Secteur S (BF2) doctoral guidelines ( French , English )

Recommendations for FRQNT and FRQS doctoral applicants:

  • Based on past experience, the strongest applicants have a good publication record and previous awards to demonstrate academic achievement
  • If you have just entered your doctoral program and have not yet published or submitted any articles, it may be advisable to focus on strengthening your CV to improve your chances for next year’s competition
  • Prepare your supporting documents. These can be in English.
  • If you are writing your abstract and your proposal in English, it is especially important to start early to leave time for the translation of the abstract.
  • Prepare a first draft of your proposal/abstract and ask for feedback from your supervisor, your fellow students, etc. Edit the draft based on their comments and ask for more feedback. Edit again.
  • Be sure to proofread your draft for clarity and grammar. If you are writing your abstract in English, make sure it is polished (no typos/grammar mistakes). The better your English version, the better the translated French version will be.
  • The abstract should be written in a language that can be understood by the public. Avoid scientific jargon that can only be understood by experts in the field.
  • Note that the word limit for the abstract is 500 words (in French) . Documents written in French typically require approximately 20% more space than similar documents in English. Your English abstract should therefore not exceed 400 words .
  • Different types of translation software currently exist on the market. GPS offers a translation review and proofreading service for doctoral applicants. To benefit from this translation service, consult the instructions below .
  • Submit your final proposal to FRQ before the deadline!

Abstract translation service and translation upload requirements:

In order to benefit form the translation review and proofreading service offered by GPS, students must submit a single .doc or .docx file containing their English title and abstract, as well as a draft French translation, as specified below:

  • Applicants must use DeepL or Reverso (not Google Translate) for their initial translation and indicate which one they used.
  • Proposal title in English and in French (maximum 320 characters in English to ensure you don’t exceed the 400-character limit in French).
  • Lay abstract in English and in French (maximum 400 words in English to ensure you don’t exceed the 500-word limit in French). It is imperative the lay abstract be written in lay terms intended for a general audience (no scientific jargon).
  • Each abstract must include the student’s full name, department and e-mail address at the top.
  • The file must be named to FRQ-SECTOR_Department_StudentName (e.g.: FRQ-S_Dept_JohnDoe).
  • First deadline: August 12, 2024 (translation returned to applicant by August 27)
  • Second deadline: August 26, 2024 (translation returned to applicant by September 10)
  • Final deadline: September 9, 2024 (translation returned to applicant by September 27)

All abstracts will be proofread/edited before being returned to the applicant. Abstracts submitted for translation by the last deadline are not guaranteed to benefit from the proofreading service.
