Want to be more productive at work? Want to feel less exhausted at home? Want to add more years to your life? If the answer to all of these questions is "yes", then fitness, and exercise is what you need.

The benefits of a healthy body are way beyond obvious. Being fit and active holds the supreme importance for all age groups. Especially among the working Millennials who are busy all day at their desks; sitting for hours at a stretch and the younger generation enjoying technological advancements, which makes them nothing less than couch potatoes. Although the use of mobile, laptop and TV at a startling rate is making our lives easier than before, it is also making our lifestyle quite sedentary. This lifestyle has a detrimental effect on not only physical but also mental health.

Trying to keep pace with the modern lifestyle, today people aren’t that physically active and energetic as our older generations were, mostly because of the job requirements. Such changes have led to a lot of serious health issues like obesity, diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, mood swings, hormonal imbalance, etc.

"Exercise should be regarded as a tribute to the heart." - Gene Tunney

The level of your fitness and exercise impacts not only our body but also the brain which is the powerhouse, controlling our movements and actions. Eating nutrient-rich food like fruits and vegetables, staying hydrated, stretching, weight training, yoga, and doing aerobic exercises allows us to live our life to the fullest. • Mental health benefits: Exercise has been shown to have a positive impact on mental health, reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety, and promoting feelings of well-being and happiness.

  • Increased lifespan: Regular exercise and fitness can increase lifespan and reduce the risk of premature death.

Overall, exercise and fitness are essential for maintaining good health and well-being in all aspects of life.

What are the types of fitness?

There are several types of fitness, including:

  • Cardiovascular or aerobic fitness: This type of fitness relates to the ability of the heart, lungs, and blood vessels to supply oxygen and nutrients to the muscles during sustained physical activity, such as running, cycling, or swimming.
  • Muscular strength: This type of fitness refers to the ability of muscles to generate force, typically measured by the maximum amount of weight that can be lifted in a single repetition of an exercise.
  • Muscular endurance: This type of fitness refers to the ability of muscles to sustain activity over an extended period, such as performing multiple repetitions of an exercise or maintaining a posture for an extended period.
  • Flexibility: This type of fitness refers to the ability of joints and muscles to move through a full range of motion, which is important for maintaining good posture, preventing injury, and improving athletic performance.
  • Balance and coordination: This type of fitness refers to the ability to maintain control and stability while moving, which is important for activities such as walking, running, and sports.
  • Body composition: This type of fitness relates to the amount of body fat and muscle mass a person has, which can affect overall health and physical performance.

What are the 4 main exercises?

There are many types of exercises, but there are four main categories that are often referred to as the "four main exercises." These four main exercises are:

  • Squats: Squats are a compound exercise that work multiple muscle groups, including the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and core. Squats involve bending at the knees and hips to lower the body into a seated position, then standing back up.
  • Deadlifts: Deadlifts are another compound exercise that work multiple muscle groups, including the hamstrings, glutes, lower back, and core. Deadlifts involve lifting a weight from the ground to a standing position, using the legs and hips to generate power.
  • Bench press: The bench press is a compound exercise that primarily works the chest, but also involves the triceps and shoulders. The bench press involves lying on a bench and pushing a barbell or dumbbells away from the chest.
  • Overhead press: The overhead press, also known as the military press, is an exercise that primarily works the shoulders, but also involves the triceps and upper back. The overhead press involves lifting a weight from the shoulders to above the head, using the arms and shoulders to generate power.

What is the best time to exercise?

The best time to exercise depends on an individual's schedule, preferences, and goals. Here are some considerations:

  • Consistency: The most important factor is to choose a time that you can stick to consistently. Consistency is key to seeing results from exercise.
  • Personal preference: Some people prefer to exercise in the morning to get it out of the way and start the day energized. Others prefer to exercise in the evening to unwind after a long day. Some people may have more energy in the afternoon.
  • Goals: If your goal is to improve sleep, exercising in the morning may be more beneficial. If your goal is to increase strength, you may benefit from exercising in the afternoon when your body temperature and hormone levels are highest.
  • Work schedule: If you have a busy work schedule, you may need to exercise early in the morning or in the evening to fit it into your day.

Ultimately, the best time to exercise is the time that you can consistently commit to and enjoy, so that you are more likely to stick with it long term.

"The key to the success with working with 24Slides has been the designers’ ability to revamp basic information on a slide into a dynamic yet clean and clear visual presentation coupled with the speed in which they do so. We do not work in an environment where time is on our side and the visual presentation is everything. In those regards, 24Slides has been invaluable."

"After training and testing, 24Slides quickly learnt how to implement our CVI, deliver at a high quality and provide a dedicated design team that always tries to accommodate our wishes in terms of design and deadlines."

8 things you should do to keep your phone running smoothly, the best budget bluetooth speakers of 2024, quick links, how the presenter coach helps you with your presentations, what you'll need, how to launch the presenter coach in powerpoint, reading your rehearsal report.

Microsoft PowerPoint now has a Presenter Coach to let you rehearse your presentations before going to the audience. This coach gives you a detailed report telling you how well you did and suggesting areas for improvement. Here's how to use it.

Consider the Presenter Coach in PowerPoint as a trusted friend who listens to you practice performing  your presentations . This coach reviews your entire presentation and creates a report detailing your performance.

For example, it will grade you on how fast you speak and how much you use filler words like "um" and "ah." It will also inform you of words you might want to avoid and encourage you not to simply read the words on your slides aloud.

Basically, if you need a second opinion on your presenting style, this is a great way to get it.

To use the Presenter Coach in PowerPoint, you must have:

  • a Microsoft account or a Microsoft 365 work or school account
  • a working internet connection
  • a microphone (so that PowerPoint can listen to what you're saying)

Also, the Presenter Coach only works if you use the English language in PowerPoint. Other languages are not yet supported as of April 2021.

PowerPoint's Presenter Coach works for any presentation. You can use it with your commercial, educational, and even family presentations.

To start using this feature, open your presentation with PowerPoint.

In the PowerPoint window, click the "Slide Show" tab on the ribbon at the top of the window.

If you don't see the Slide Show tab, you're probably in Slide Master View. Close this view by selecting "Slide Master" at the top and then clicking "Close Master View."

Slide Show tab in PowerPoint

In the Slide Show tab, click "Rehearse with Coach" to open PowerPoint's Presenter Coach.

Slide Show menu items in PowerPoint

Your presentation will open in fullscreen mode. To activate the Presenter Coach, click "Start Rehearsing" in the bottom-right corner of your window. Optionally, enable "Show real-time feedback" if you want the coach to give you tips while you're still presenting.

Presenter Coach's box in PowerPoint

Now, begin your presentation like you normally would. If you enabled the real-time feedback option, you'll see some tips appear in the bottom-right corner of your window.

Presenter Coach's feedback in PowerPoint

Press "Esc" when you're done presenting to exit fullscreen mode. PowerPoint will now open your rehearsal report.

It's important to read and analyze the Presenter Coach's report properly. This will help you find areas for improvement and see whether you're doing well.

The report will vanish as soon as you close the report window. To save the report, take a screenshot of it.

Rehearsal report view in PowerPoint

Here's what each section in the report tells you about your presentation:

  • Summary : Summary tells you the amount of time you spent practicing your presentation. It also shows the number of slides you rehearsed.
  • Fillers : In the Fillers section, you'll see the filler words (umm, ah) that you used during your presentation. Using these filler words makes you sound less confident, and you should try to avoid using them.
  • Sensitive Phrases : Sensitive Phrases highlights culturally sensitive phrases that you used in your presentation, which you might want to avoid. It considers the following areas sensitive: disability, age, gender, race, sexual orientation, mental health, geopolitical topics, and profanity.
  • Pace : The Pace section tells you the pace of your presentation. If you were too fast or too slow, you'll find that information here.
  • Originality : Microsoft suggests that you avoid reading out the text written in your presentation slides, as this makes your presentation boring. Instead, you should use original content in your speech. The Originality section informs you if you only read the text from your slides.

Now that you know where you need to improve, click the "Rehearse Again" button at the top of the report to re-present your presentation. When you're done, PowerPoint will make another report detailing your new presentation performance.

Physical Activity and Fitness In this chapter, you will Learn About… • Physical activity and health. • The skeletal and muscular systems. • The circulatory system. • How to develop a personal fitness plan. • Sports and physical wellness.

Physical Activity and Health In this lesson, you will Learn About… • The benefits of physical activity. • How to increase your strength, endurance, and flexibility.

Physical Activity and You Physical activity is any kind of movement that causes the body to use energy. Participating in regular physical activity: • Helps build and maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints. • Helps control weight and reduce fat. • Helps keep blood pressure within a healthy range. • You should be physically active 30-60 minutes DAILY

Physical Activity and You (cont’d.) The ability to handle the physical work and play of everyday life without becoming tired is known as fitness. Exercise can help you become more fit. Daily physical activity also has MANY other benefits in all areas of one’s self (wellness)

Physical Activity and Your Total Health Benefits to physical health: • Maintenance of a healthy weight • Improved strength and flexibility • Better performance of heart and lungs • Decreased risk of certain diseases

Physical Activity and Your Total Health (cont’d.) Benefits to mental/emotional health: • Enhanced self-confidence • Sharpened mental alertness • Reduced stress • More relaxed attitude • More enjoyment of free time

Physical Activity and Your Total Health (cont’d.) Benefits to social health: • Additional chances to meet new people • Opportunities to share common goals with others • Increased ability to interact and cooperate with others • Opportunities to use talents to help others

Components of Exercise= Strength The first element of fitness is strength, the ability of your muscles to exert a force. It is measured according to the most work the muscles can do at a given time.

Strength (cont’d.) Building strength through physical activity enables you to: • Lift heavy objects more easily with less chance of injury. • Develop skills for sports and other activities.

Strength-Building Exercises Curl-ups, or crunches, strengthen abdominal muscles. Push-ups strengthen the muscles of your upper arms, back, chest, and shoulders. Step-ups strengthen your leg muscles.

Components of Exercise = Endurance The second element of fitness is endurance, the ability to perform vigorous physical activity without getting overly tired. There are two basic types of endurance: • Heart and lung endurance • Muscle endurance

Endurance (cont’d.) Heart and lung endurance is the measure of how effectively the heart and lungs work during moderate-to-vigorous physical activity or exercise. Muscle endurance is the ability of a muscle to repeatedly exert a force over a prolonged period of time.

Endurance (cont’d.) Two types of exercise can help build endurance: • Aerobic exercise—Rhythmic, nonstop, moderate-to-vigorous activity that requires large amounts of oxygen and works the heart. • Anaerobic exercise—Intense physical activity that requires little oxygen but involves short bursts of energy.

Endurance (cont’d.) Doing aerobic exercises for a minimum of 20 minutes at least three times a week is the best way to build heart and lung endurance. Examples of aerobic exercises: • Walking, jogging, and bicycling • Swimming laps • Cross-country skiing

Endurance (cont’d.) Anaerobic activities help build and maintain strength and muscle endurance. Examples of anaerobic exercises: • Weight lifting • Sprinting

Components of Exercise = Flexibility The third element of fitness is flexibility, the ability to move joints fully and easily. You can increase your flexibility by doing regular, gentle stretching of muscles and joints. Improving flexibility reduces the risk of injury during strength or endurance training.

Stretching Exercises Stand close to a wall and lean toward it, placing your palms against it. Keep one leg bent and the other extended. Keeping the heel of the extended leg on the ground, move your hip forward until you feel a stretch in the calf muscle. Stand with your arm extended behind your back, hand clasped. Raise your arm until you feel tightness in your shoulders and chest. Hold for 20 seconds.

Selecting the Right Exercises To reach your fitness goals, plan a program that is: • Convenient. • Affordable. • Enjoyable. Workouts should include a variety of physical activities to promote balanced fitness.

Selecting the Right Exercises (cont’d.) To add physical activity to your life: • Do a variety of aerobic exercises and/or active sports and recreation activities for at least 20 minutes, three to five times a week. • Aim to do strength and flexibility exercises two or three times a week. • Try not to spend too much time watching television, online, or playing non-active video games. Staying active is important for good health.

Junior lifeguards in Ventura learn how to 'stop the bleed' and save a life

The trauma surgeon standing on a Ventura beach wore the message on his chest.

"This shirt can save a life," read Dr. Thomas Duncan's red long-sleeved tee. Speaking to 300 kids in a junior lifeguard program at San Buenaventura State Beach Tuesday, Duncan said the shirt, a sheet or even a sock could be used to apply pressure on a potentially fatal blood wound that could come from a surfboard, a car accident or a gun shot.

Life-threatening means the blood flows suddenly and quickly. Duncan, trauma medical director at the Ventura County Medical Center in Ventura, demonstrated by unrolling a sheet of plastic that looked like a cherry Fruit Roll-up and was nearly the size of his shirt. It simulates nearly 17 ounces of blood, he said.

The message is grisly but important.

“The reason we’re bringing this course to you,” he said, “is so you can save a life.”

The presentation by the VCMC trauma team, emergency medical technicians and others is called Stop the Bleed. It was launched by the Barack Obama White House in 2015, pushed by the school shooting three years earlier that left 26 people dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

In such shooting tragedies, car collisions, household accidents involving panes of glass, even in injuries caused by an errant fly ball at a Dodgers game, stopping the bleed can keep people alive, Duncan said.

The VCMC trauma team has been part of Stop the Bleed since the beginning. They help put on training sessions at schools, in businesses and this summer for the first time, in three beach presentations for some 900 kids learning about rip currents, water safety and CPR in the California State Parks' three-week junior lifeguard program.

Duncan told the junior guards about the person who helped save the life of a surfer hit by a board. The surfer's friend fashioned a tourniquet out of a board’s leash. The quick thinking kept the surfer around long enough to be treated at the hospital.

Before the program started, Duncan told the story of meeting someone in a Taylor Swift shirt who insisted he would not give up the gear to stop someone's bleeding. Later, speaking to the junior guards, the doctor emphasized lives are at stake.

"You can always get another shirt," he said.

The kids sat in the sand. Some wore caps. A young girl wore sunscreen shaped into a heart. In small sessions, they were told the first step before trying to help someone is to make sure the scene is safe and they won’t get hurt. Then they need to apply pressure to the wound.

The kids learned how to use tourniquets on each other. They learned the ABCs of responding:

  • Alert officials by calling 911.
  • Identify the source of Bleeding.
  • Compress the wound by applying pressure.

Afterward, they talked about how gratifying it would feel to save someone’s life. Kate Ippolito, 13, of Ventura, noted the message is being presented often and not just to adults but to school kids. It means the instructors think there's a relatively high chance people will need to know what to do.

“It makes you feel like it’s more likely to happen,” she said.

Supervisors Boot Camp: Skills for Success

We are excited to announce that our Fall 2024 program will feature the same insightful instructors and presentations that made our Summer 2024 program a success.

Supervisors Boot Camp is a one-day conference designed for individuals recently promoted to, or aspiring towards, a supervisory role. It offers a comprehensive exploration of the skills necessary for effective supervision.

Expert speakers will cover topics such as managing diverse teams, handling challenges faced by new supervisors, and understanding basic employment law. Attendees will embark on a journey of growth and development, fostering inclusive leadership practices, enhancing team management strategies, and gaining insights into the complexities of supervisory roles.

The Fall 2024 program features presentations from UNH Professional Development & Training instructors:

  • Amy Cann, Esq Introduction to Labor Law
  • James T. McKim, Jr., PMP, ITIL DEI Foundations for New Supervisors
  • Gerri King, PH.D. Challenges Facing New Supervisors
  • Krystal Hicks, Founder, JOBTALK,LLC How to Manage and Retain Multi-Generational Teams Leveraging Transparency, Empathy, and Strategy

Amy Cann: Introduction to labor law

The Introduction to Labor Law for New Managers program is designed to provide essential knowledge and understanding of labor laws and regulations to individuals stepping into managerial roles within organizations. This course aims to equip new managers with the foundational understanding necessary to navigate these complexities effectively.

Throughout the program, participants will explore key concepts, principles, and statutes that govern the workplace, including but not limited to:

  • Understanding the historical context and evolution of labor law, including its importance in modern workplaces.
  • Understanding laws and regulations related to discrimination, harassment, and retaliation in the workplace.
  • Examining the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and its implications for minimum wage, overtime pay, and recordkeeping.
  • Introduction to the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), union organizing, collective bargaining, and unfair labor practices.
  • Understanding employee rights regarding accommodation.

Participants will develop an appreciation for labor laws and will gain an understanding on how to navigate the complexities of labor law, mitigate legal risks, and foster positive employer-employee relationships within their organizations.

James T. McKim, Jr., PMP, ITIL: DEI Foundations for New Supervisors

Abstract: We hear and use terms like “diversity”, “equity”, and “inclusion” quite frequently. But most people never stop to understand what those terms really mean. Discover the key concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) that are the foundation for improving individual and organizational performance. Discover why individuals unintentionally discriminate (“isms”), how discrimination manifests in interpersonal relationships, and why it is beneficial to include diverse people and thoughts in your daily life.

Learning Objectives By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe what diversity, equity, and inclusion mean
  • Describe the difference between race and ethnicity/culture
  • Describe why diversity is nothing without equity and inclusion
  • Begin to analyze the “welcomeness” of your workplace for diverse employees.

Gerri King, PH.D.: Challenges Facing   New Supervisors

Employees are promoted because they’re good at their jobs.  Being in a leadership position is an entirely different job for which practically no one is trained.  Supervising former peers, confidence taking on the role, and resolving conflicts are just a few of the issues facing newly promoted professionals.  This session will address a myriad of concerns and offer choices for how to handle them.

This session will address:

-  Adjusting to a new role

-  Supervising former peers

-  Resolving conflicts

-  Challenges you raise

Krystal Hicks, Founder, JOBTALK,LLC: How to manage and retain multi-generational teams leveraging transparency, empathy, and strategy.

There has never been a time when middle managers have had more on their plate than right now. Not only do people require more from leadership to feel connected and seen at work, but the systems and work environments required to be productive are constantly changing, requiring managers to quickly pivot and adapt. All of these factors mean that NEW managers have to bring new tools to the table if they want to inspire, develop, and ultimately retain their people.

In this workshop, new managers will:

  • Learn how to celebrate their people's wins in the most authentic way possible.
  • Gain insight/language on how to drive their employees' development using a growth model that incentivizes them.
  • Improve their comfort level in managing multi-generational teams (where even people in the same role may require very different types of leadership, communication, support, boundaries, etc.).
  • Take away best practices for succession planning and employee performance improvement/development conversations.

Supervisors Boot Camp: Skills for Success Fall 2024

Drive Sober Kickoff

Sophie Shulman, NHTSA Deputy Administrator

Washington, D.C.

As Prepared for Delivery

Welcome to everyone joining us virtually and here at the DC Fire and EMS Training Academy in Washington, DC. I’m Sophie Shulman, Deputy Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Labor Day weekend is one of the nation’s busiest holiday travel periods, and it’s also one of the deadliest. That’s in large part due to impaired-driving crashes.

One person was killed every 39 minutes in an alcohol-impaired-driving crash in 2022, leaving behind families, friends and communities who will never be whole again.

Our Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign reminds everyone of the consequences of alcohol- and drug-impaired driving. It also includes messaging aimed at motorcyclists, Ride Sober or Get Pulled Over , educating them of the risks of riding impaired.

Our message is urgent because alcohol-impaired-driving fatalities made up almost one-third of all traffic fatalities in 2022, with 13,524 lives lost.

Through September 2, our 15 million dollar national campaign will spread the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over message far and wide across television, radio, billboard and digital advertising.

We want everyone to think twice before getting behind the wheel after drinking or using any impairing substances, including marijuana.

After all, driving under the influence of marijuana or other drugs is illegal in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Our companion messaging, Drive High, Get a DUI , educates marijuana users that cannabis impairs their ability to drive safely and can result in the same charges and consequences as driving drunk.

Starting tomorrow through Labor Day, law enforcement officers will also be supporting our enforcement mobilization campaign, helping to keep impaired drivers off our roads.

Identifying and removing impaired drivers from our interstates, highways and streets saves lives, and we expect that all officers will enforce traffic laws equitably and fairly.

Impaired driving is 100% preventable, and there are so many options besides getting behind the wheel.

Arrange for a sober driver in advance, or use ridesharing, taxis or public transit to get home safely.

And if you’re hosting a party over the Labor Day weekend, or any time of year, make sure all of your guests have a safe and sober ride home.

After all, impaired driving is a choice. It’s a choice that could cost you your job, your freedom, your life, or the life of someone else on the road.

Use a designated driver, take public transit, call a cab, or order a rideshare and get home safely. And never let a friend get behind the wheel or on a motorcycle if they’re impaired.

This Labor Day weekend, and every day, we want everyone to remember: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over . Don’t risk your life or the lives of everyone on the road with you.

Remember, drunk driving crashes are 100% preventable. Always drive sober.

Thank you very much, and please stay safe.
