Study PhD Program in China in English in 2024

China now has the most PhD graduates in the world and is one of the best places to get your PhD.

The course structure of a PhD or doctoral program in China is similar to the UK and US. First, you will choose a novel topic in your field and conduct a detailed research about it with the assistance of a chosen supervisor. Upon completion of the research, you will submit a thesis presenting significant findings.

The normal length of a full-time Chinese PhD program is three to four years with an option apply for a one year extension to complete writing your dissertation.

A PhD’s academic year in China is composed of two semesters, the spring semester which starts in March and ends in mid July and the fall semester which starts in mid September and ends in January.

The curriculum of Chinese PhD programs differ depending on the university of the subject area. However, Chinese universities offering PhD usually go for more formal classroom teaching. In the first two to three years of your PhD program, you must complete training and study as set by your supervisor. This includes classroom discussions and examinations.

During the fourth year of study, you are required to submit a full doctoral thesis on your research project and pass an oral defense in the presence of a panel of experts.

Tuition Fee and Admissions

The tuition fee for PhD programs in China vary depending on the field of study. For instance, Arts and Humanities subjects have lower tuition fees when compared to other subject areas. PhD programs related to medicine usually have more expensive tuition fees with science and engineering programs coming in next. You can apply for Chinese government scholarships or Chinese university scholarships to ease the burden financially. Overall, Chinese PhDs offer cheaper tuition costs than universities in the US or Europe.

Basic admission requirements include a master’s degree, passing the entrance examination, having a research supervisor and recommendation letters. Most Chinese university will also required you to pass a certain level of the HSK test (Chinese proficiency test).

PhD Scholarships in China

Yes there are are scholarships for PhD in China but they are not too simple to apply. You need to find a supervisor and then apply, or you need to be accepted for the CSC scholarship. Phd admissions process.

Applying for a PhD in China is different from applying for bachelor or master programs. In addition to meeting the admission requirements and application materials, students are required to find their own supervisors to guide them during the course of their study.

To proceed with your application, you need to find three suitable supervisors from the university for your research proposal. Once your find a supervisor, send the request for supervision on your thesis. If the supervisor approves, you will receive a confirmation letter or email. You can then continue on with the application process.

PhD Admission Requirements

Applicants for doctoral programs must have attained a master’s degree, and students who graduated from a non-Chinese institution must have a master’s degree from an institution recognized by the Ministry of Education of China.

The Ph.D. program is designed to prepare students for a doctoral degree in Chinese literature and culture.

Students should consult the most up-to-date version of the degree plan on the Stanford Bulletin as well as the EALC Graduate Handbook . Each student should meet with their faculty advisor at least once per quarter to discuss the degree requirements and their progress.

Admission to Candidacy

Candidacy is the most important University milestone on the way to the Ph.D. degree. Admission to candidacy rests both on the fulfillment of department requirements and on an assessment by department faculty that the student has the potential to successfully complete the Ph.D.

Following University policy ( GAP 4.6.1 ), students are expected to complete the candidacy requirements by Spring Quarter of the second year of graduate study.

Four courses numbered above 200 in the field of China studies, at least two of which must be listed with the CHINA subject code, and the other two of which may be in different sub-fields such as anthropology, art history, history, philosophy, political science, religious studies, or another relevant field, as approved by the student’s advisor.

All doctoral students must complete an MA qualifying paper. An MA thesis is accepted instead of a qualifying paper for students initially admitted as EALC MA students. Students seeking an MA en route to the PhD must secure approval from the primary advisor and submit an MA thesis.

A graded MA qualifying paper or thesis must be submitted to the DGS and SSO with an accompanying note from the student’s primary advisor by week five of spring quarter of the second year of study for the annual review and candidacy decision.

During the quarter when students complete the MA qualifying paper or thesis (25-30 pages), they must enroll in EALC 299 .

Teaching Requirement

DLCL 301 - The Learning and Teaching of Second Languages (3 units)
Demonstrate pedagogical proficiency by serving as a teaching assistant for at least three quarters, starting no later than autumn quarter of the third year of graduate study. The department may approve exceptions to the timing of the language teaching requirement.

Post-Candidacy Requirements

Demonstrate proficiency in at least one supporting language (beyond the near-native level required in Chinese and English) to be chosen in consultation with the primary advisor according to the candidate’s specific research goals. For this supporting language (typically Japanese, Korean, or a European language), students must be proficient at a second-year level at the minimum; a higher level of proficiency may be required depending on the advisor’s recommendation. Reading proficiency must be certified through a written examination or an appropriate amount of coursework to be determined on a case-by-case basis. This requirement must be fulfilled by the end of the fourth year of graduate study.

Students in Chinese literature must take CHINA 291 - The Structure of Modern Chinese (2-4 units). Literature students must also take at least one EALC course in a field different from the student’s primary specialization (e.g., a modern literature course for students specializing in premodern literature, and vice versa, or a course in Japanese or Korean literature).

Complete two relevant seminars at the 300 level. EALC 200 may be substituted for one of these two seminars.

Pass three comprehensive written examinations, one of which tests the candidate’s methodological competence in the relevant discipline. The remaining two fields are chosen, with the approval of the student’s advisor, from the following: Chinese literature, Japanese literature, Korean literature, archaeology, anthropology, art history, comparative literature, communication, history, linguistics, philosophy, and religious studies. With the advisor’s approval, a PhD minor in a supporting field may be deemed equivalent to completing one of these three examinations.

Students should submit a dissertation prospectus before advancing to Terminal Graduate Registration (TGR) status. The prospectus should comprehensively describe the dissertation project and include sections on the project rationale, key research questions, contributions to the field, a literature review, a chapter-by-chapter outline, a projected timeline, and a bibliography.

Pass the University Oral Examination (dissertation defense). General regulations governing the oral examination are found in Graduate Academic Policies and Procedures ( GAP 4.7.1 ). The candidate is examined on questions related to the dissertation after acceptable parts have been completed in draft form.

Following university policy ( GAP 4.8.1 ), submit a dissertation demonstrating the ability to undertake original research based on primary and secondary materials in Chinese.

All students in the Ph.D. program in modern Chinese literature must pass three comprehensive written examinations (a.k.a. field exams or qualifying exams) by the end of their ninth quarter: Theory, Literature, and X. The theory exam tests the student’s competence in the fundamental methods and issues of literary and cultural studies. The literature exam tests the student’s familiarity with the basic canon of modern Chinese literature, representative texts in his or her own area/period/genre of interest, and the core secondary scholarship of the field. The third field (X) may be chosen, with the approval of the Director of Graduate Studies in consultation with the student’s primary advisor from the following: comparative literature, premodern Chinese literature, linguistics, history, film, art history, philosophy, religious studies, archaeology, anthropology, political science, sociology, Japanese literature, Korean literature, FGSS, environmental humanities, digital humanities, or medical humanities. It is the student’s responsibility to secure a faculty member’s (EALC or non-EALC) consent to supervise the third exam. With the primary advisor's approval, a Ph.D. minor in a supporting field may be deemed equivalent to the completion of the third exam. Comprehensive/field exams must be completed before students can register for TGR; students should take their first field exam at the latest in the spring or summer quarter of their second year to be on track to complete all three exams by or before the end of their third year.

Students should prepare for each exam by taking the following steps:

Prepare a reading list. Start with the core list and add 10-20 more titles that pertain directly to his/her own area/period/genre of interest; the list should be organized into 4-5 topics and must conform to a standard bibliographical style. Submit the list to both the primary advisor and field supervisor (if different) for approval.
Set a date for the exam. Two weeks prior to the exam date, submit a list of 4-5 discursive questions each keyed to a topic in the reading list.
On the day of the exam, the student receives three or four questions from which s/he chooses to answer two. Each exam essay should be 5-6 pages, double-spaced, and proofread. Footnote citations or a works cited list is not necessary. The allotted time for each exam is 4 hours with a half hour break. The exam may be administered by email.

The exam essays are evaluated for breadth, accuracy, and analytical acumen. Students will be graded on a scale from Fail to Pass and Pass with Distinction. A student who receives the "Fail" grade will be placed on probation and must retake the exam within three months. A second "Fail" grade will result in dismissal from the program.

The Dissertation Prospectus Defense constitutes the first step toward faculty approval for the student’s proposed dissertation project and should be completed before or soon after the student applies for external funding to conduct doctoral research - typically by Winter quarter of the fourth year, or no later than Spring quarter of the fourth year. The defense is a two-hour oral exam conducted by the student’s dissertation reading committee (minimum of three faculty members, including the primary advisor). The prospectus, 12-15 pages not including bibliography, must be submitted to the committee members at least two weeks prior to the defense.

CSET Research Analyst Jack Corrigan spoke with University World News about China's dedication to tech talent through its STEM PhD growth.

Concern is growing in some quarters in the United States that China is rapidly catching up with the number of PhDs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) it produces compared to the US, which could have an impact on the US lead in certain sectors of research that contribute to national security.

But others say that while PhD-level expertise is a national priority for both the US and China, overly focusing on numbers does not necessarily indicate a country’s research prowess on a global level.

A new report by Georgetown University’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET) in the US released in August said that currently Chinese universities graduate roughly three STEM PhDs for every two graduated by US universities each year. By 2025, the report predicts that China will produce roughly twice as many STEM PhDs as the US.

“Based on current enrolment patterns, we project that by 2025 Chinese universities will produce more than 77,000 STEM PhD graduates per year compared to approximately 40,000 in the United States. If international students are excluded from the US count, Chinese STEM PhD graduates would outnumber their US counterparts more than three to one,” the report said.

“Given the scale of China’s investments in higher education and the high-stakes technology competition between the United States and China, the gap in STEM PhD production could undermine US long-term economic and national security,” it adds, while acknowledging that the number of doctoral graduates a country produces is just one indicator of future competitiveness in STEM fields.

Jack Corrigan, one of the report’s authors, told University World News : “We are living in a world where a country’s economic and national security is increasingly dependent on its ability to develop and utilise advanced technology in areas like artificial intelligence, synthetic biology, quantum computing – all of the big emerging technologies.

“And in order to develop and deploy those technologies, countries need to have access to a large, knowledgeable and well-trained pool of STEM talent.

“PhDs, which we specifically focus on in this paper, represent a small but important part of that workforce. They’re responsible for leading a lot of the research and development [R&D] pushing forward these different fields of technology,” he said.

Corrigan explained that a country “isn’t necessarily going to become a dominant player in a particular field of technology simply by virtue of having more STEM PhDs; there are a lot of economic factors that play into political considerations that affect the vibrancy of a country’s R&D ecosystem. But looking specifically through this talent lens, you do need a certain number of STEM PhDs to keep the wheels of innovation turning.”

China’s PhD growth trajectory

China has been concentrating on STEM PhDs for more than two decades.

The report notes that between 2003 and 2007, the Chinese government set up more than 1,300 new PhD programmes at dozens of institutions that previously did not offer doctoral programmes. During that period, the number of annual STEM PhD graduates in China more than doubled.

Growth in the number of PhDs subsequently slowed as the Chinese government refocused its efforts on improving the quality of higher education, but state-sponsored higher education has expanded again in recent years, with spending on higher education almost doubling between 2012 and 2021, fuelling an increase in new PhD enrolments.

Between 2016 and 2019, the number of students entering STEM doctoral programmes at Chinese universities increased nearly 40%, from 59,670 to 83,134.

“Pouring money into the educational system and training more people in STEM are one component of China’s national self-strengthening strategy, which in some parts of the American establishment is seen as a threat to American national security,” said David Zweig, professor emeritus at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and an expert on Chinese talent.

“China has the advantage of numbers. But numbers don’t necessarily mean quality,” Zweig told University World News . Its progress on PhDs “shows that China is certainly competitive, but it’s not a sign that China is surpassing the hegemon [the US]”, he added, describing raw numbers as being like “cannon fodder” in the battle for hegemony.

“Having an ample quantity of talented individuals is a necessary but not sufficient determinant of innovative capability,” said Denis Simon, senior advisor on China to the president of Duke University and a former executive vice-chancellor of Duke Kunshan University in China.

He added that success in innovation and technology “also depended on the overall openness of the research environment”; and a professional class of R&D managers “who can stimulate creative people as well as evaluate project risk and potential”.

Numbers vs quality

The CSET report notes that it is hard to judge the extent to which Chinese PhD programmes are producing graduates with advanced knowledge and skills, although China-based authors are producing an increasingly large share of top STEM publications – defined as the top 1% of cited articles – and are already exceeding US-based authors in certain disciplines, including several subfields of artificial intelligence.

It notes that most of the recent and rapid growth in Chinese PhD enrolments comes from universities within the higher quality tiers.

In recent years, a little under half of all Chinese PhD graduates have come from China’s top-level “Double First Class” universities, while about 80% come from universities administered by national ministries. Only about 20% come from locally or privately administered universities, whose average quality is lower, according to the report.

“Between 2015 and 2019, the number of students entering PhD programmes at universities run by central ministries and agencies rose approximately 34%, from 59,039 to 79,031. This group of universities accounted for roughly 65% of the total increase in first-time PhD enrolments across China during that period,” the report said.

Simon saw the number of high-quality STEM PhDs as coming from a much narrower band of top universities in China.

“While China’s numbers are growing rapidly in terms of the production of high-level talent, we need to be careful about assuming that the output in quality terms of new STEM graduates from Chinese universities is entirely homogenous. After the top 15-20 universities, the quality of doctoral programmes falls off precipitously,” he told University World News .

“My sense is that the PhD STEM graduates trained within China’s top universities are really high calibre as researchers,” Simon noted. “The lingering issue is whether these days the best students stay in China rather than going overseas for training.”

“We have entered a period in the world economy defined by the emergence of a war for talent. Both China and the US are at the centre of that war,” he said, adding: “The situation only promises to get worse as the emphasis on innovation and technological progress grows.”

International students

The CSET report noted that “a key strategic advantage” of the US higher education system is its ability to attract international talent.

Multiple studies and data sources suggest that at least 75% of STEM PhD graduates have historically stayed in the US for at least 10 years. By comparison, China attracts relatively few international students, and it is unclear how many international PhD graduates from Chinese universities stay in China upon graduation, according to the report.

International students made up about 42% of STEM PhD graduates in the US between 2010 and 2019, with especially high shares in computer science and engineering.

By contrast, the vast majority of PhDs graduating from Chinese universities are Chinese nationals. According to Chinese Ministry of Education data, international students accounted for only about 7% of doctoral enrolments in China in 2018, and the share was lower in previous years.

“If you’re a foreign student in the US, you’re really much more motivated than a [Chinese] mainland student going into a mainland programme,” said Zweig.

Simon said: “Students from abroad bring new ideas, new perspectives and new approaches into the lab environment. Their unique experiences working on diverse problems helps to open up existing ways of tackling problems. What they may lack in formal methodology training, they more than make up for in terms of work ethic and desire for high levels of achievement.

“One key way we [in the US] have made up for our quantitative deficiencies in the past is with our immigration policies – students coming from East, Southeast and South Asia have filled many of our gaps in computer science and engineering, life sciences and new materials.”

However, Simon warned, “many unresolved problems persist because US immigration policy is in chaos, compounded by new national security concerns about students and scholars from China”.

“Clearly, in an age of accelerating innovation and compressed product life cycles, talent availability and utilisation are key determinants of success and progress for all countries,” said Simon.

Graduate Program

Welcome to the graduate program in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations. The program offers the Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Civilizations (EALC) in the principal fields of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean literature; Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Inner Asian history (including Tibet); East Asian Buddhism; and East Asian Arts, Film and Cultural Studies. In addition, the program also offers the Ph.D. in History and East Asian Languages (HEAL) in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Inner Asian history. Instruction in Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese history is also offered in the Department of History . A rough division of emphasis places Chinese and Japanese history after ca. 1850 in the History Department and most teaching in earlier periods in EALC. Courses in Korean and Inner Asian history are offered only in EALC, but many are cross-listed in History.

Faculty holding joint appointments with other departments include specialists in Buddhist studies, Japanese history, the History of Science, and Tibetan studies.

The Department of EALC does not offer a master’s program. Those interested in pursuing a master’s degree in the study of East Asia should consult the Committee on Regional Studies – East Asia .

Structure of PhD in China

Duration of the program

There are 2 types of PhD in China: full-time and part-time. For foreign students, only full is suitable, as there are restrictions on the X1 visa. You can find out more about visas in this article . Long-term programs are usually 3 or 4 years. Each year is divided into two semesters : spring and fall, from March to July and from September to January, respectively.

PhD in China can take place in different ways depending on the chosen university and direction. Teaching and assessment are more formal than in many Western countries. For the first 2-3 years, you will have to complete a teaching program that will be drawn up by your supervisor. This program may include: attending lectures and passing exams for further obtaining a doctoral degree.

During your studies, you also need to work on a research project. According to the results of which you will have to write a doctoral dissertation. You should defend it in oral form in front of a group of experts.

Requirments

Each university has its list of requirements for candidates, however, among them, general criteria can be distinguished:

Master’s : you must have a completed master’s degree or equivalent
Exams : in some universities, it is necessary to pass an exam in language proficiency and some subjects
Supervisor : you need to approve your topic with a supervisor
Recommendations : you must have at least two letters of recommendation from your professors.

PhD in China can be taught in two languages: Chinese and English. To study in Chinese, you need to have an HSK certificate. To study in English, you need to pass IELTS .

Before applying, you must contact a potential supervisor. Only after approval of your chosen topic, you can send your application.

To apply, you need to follow these steps:

Results : the university may require a grade record for your previous research work. You can get this at your previous university.
Application form : it is necessary to fill out the application form, indicating the selected supervisor.
Other : you also need to provide a certificate of medical health. And for students without a scholarship, provide a certificate of the availability of finance.

PhD students in China face outsize challenges as they try to complete their degrees, according to Nature ’s fifth biennial survey of PhD students. On many measures, students in China fare worse than students in other parts of the world. One telling number: only 55% of the Chinese students who responded to the survey said that they were at least partially satisfied with their PhD experience. For the 5,630 respondents outside China, the satisfaction rate was 72% (see ‘A nation apart’).

Professor Ji-Guang Wang: A Life of Getting China's Hypertension Under Control

The World Health Organization estimates that there are at least 270 million people living with hypertension in China — a fraction of whom are being adequately treated, if at all. Part of the problem is the size of the country and getting access to appropriate care. Improving the situation has been a lifelong goal for Ji-Guang Wang, MD, PhD, professor of cardiovascular medicine and director of the Shanghai Institute of Hypertension and of the department of hypertension at Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, China.

At the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress 2024, Wang spoke with Medscape about his career path and discussed some of the initiatives and research that he has been involved in recently.

Wang is the current president of the Chinese Hypertension League and deputy president of the Hypertension Cardiovascular Outcome Prevention and Evidence in Asia (HOPE Asia) Network. He is past president of the Asian-Pacific Society of Hypertension, past president of the Pulse of Asia Society, and a former executive council member of the International Society of Hypertension. In addition, he serves on the editorial board of several international and Chinese national journals in the field of hypertension and cardiovascular medicine in various capacities.

Over the course of his career, Wang has been involved in many m ulticenter randomized clinical trials and population-based studies, published hundreds of articles on hypertension in both the international and Chinese literature, and has lectured extensively and chaired sessions at conferences at home and abroad.

Who or what inspired you to become a cardiologist? What led you to your current positions at the Shanghai Institute of Hypertension and Ruijin Hospital?

I started my career in the field of cardiology, mainly focusing on hypertension, more than 30 years ago. I started my career in Beijing, in Fuwai Hospital , which is a cardiovascular institution and hospital. It's mainly dedicated to cardiology. What I want is to be a physician-scientist. This is why I like cardiovascular medicine, because I want to do research in addition to clinical practice. That's why I chose to be a physician instead of a surgeon, for instance. As a surgeon, you have to work mainly in the wards and do surgeries. As a physician, you can do more research, particularly to investigate the etiology and pathogenesis of various diseases.

Regarding why cardiovascular disease, it goes back to what I predicted many, many years ago: that with the increasing economy in China, we would probably also have more patients with cardiovascular diseases, mainly coronary heart disease , but also other problems like hypertension. Rates of hypertension have indeed increased a lot in the past 30 years, from around 10% to close to 30% of all adults.

What are the reasons behind this high increase in hypertension rates in China?

I think there are mainly two reasons. The first is because of aging; China has a large population of people over 60 years of age, and almost half of them have high blood pressure. The second is mainly the change in lifestyle; calorie intake is high and calorie expenditure is becoming lower, so we have a lot of people developing obesity . There are also problems of high salt intake and metabolic disorders, increasing the likelihood to develop hypertension.

You are the current president of the Chinese Hypertension League. What is the role of the society, and is it trying to address the increased rate of hypertension in China?

We do several things. First of all, we of course need to write Chinese scientific guidelines for the management of hypertension. It means physicians can follow certain recommendations to manage hypertension in such a big country.

The other thing we do is to promote research in the field, both basic research and clinical research, so we can improve our management of hypertension. It is not a single disease; it is actually a manifestation of many different diseases. So we really need to improve our knowledge. We have started several screening activities for secondary hypertension, such as that due to sleep apnea. With these programs, we can improve the management of more complicated and complex cases of hypertension.

When were the first Chinese hypertension guidelines published? Why is there a need to have specific hypertension guidelines for China, and how do Chinese guidelines compare with those produced by US and European professional societies?

The first Chinese hypertension guidelines were published in 1999. These have been updated four times. The current guidelines were published just a few weeks ago.Specific guidelines are needed because we have a lot of differences. We have different lifestyles. We have high salt intake, and we eat more rice than other populations. In addition, we have quite a high prevalence of cigarette smoking, and alcohol intake is also a big issue in China. We are also different sometimes in responses to disease evaluations, and we need a different diagnostic threshold in some cases. And we are of course a little bit different in size in the cardiovascular system. In the new guidelines, we define left ventricular hypertrophy using the Chinese criteria instead of the previously used European and US criteria.

There are also a lot of treatment differences. For example, we use more calcium-channel blockers to reduce blood pressure than thiazide diuretics, because in China we have more people with hyperuricemia , and if you use standard diuretics you would induce gout and further increase the prevalence of this condition. We have also started to use more angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitors. These are not approved for hypertension yet in Europe and America [although they are approved for heart failure ]. That's because in China, we probably need that drug to reduce blood pressure, especially in those patients with high salt intake and salt sensitivity. In Europe and North America, they probably have less problem in that regard.

What are some of the challenges of treating someone with hypertension who is Chinese? If someone is living outside of China, say in the United States or Europe, should they be treated according to the local country's guidelines or to the Chinese guidelines?

I think we should have some more communication in that regard. Hopefully [clinicians will] not necessarily use, but refer to, the Chinese guidelines for American Asian and European Asian persons. People may still have the same Chinese lifestyle even though they live in North America or Europe.

What can be done to improve the hypertension situation in China and indeed globally?

I think we [researchers from China] should communicate more, both in the literature and at scientific meetings, such as at this European Society of Cardiology conference. I chaired one session here and participated in this year's American College of Cardiology meeting, for example. By communicating more, we probably can improve our knowledge and understanding.

You are the deputy president of the HOPE Asia Network . What does the organization do, and what role does it play in improving hypertension management?

HOPE Asia is an organization that is mainly concerned with improving knowledge and, eventually, management of hypertension in Asian countries. It's an organization of hypertension experts from more than 10 Asian countries. Together, we discuss our work and we publish consensus documents. In the past year, we published about 50 documents in almost all areas of hypertension to try to improve its management.

What current research interests or projects are you involved in?

I mainly do clinical and epidemiologic studies. For the clinical part, I do randomized controlled trials, and also observational studies in patients with hypertension with other comorbidities such as diabetes or dyslipidemia. For the epidemiologic part, we have some cohorts with different characteristics. We have older adult cohorts, we have the general population cohort, and we also have a workplace population cohort, so we have many cohorts for epidemiologic studies. In all of these studies, we include blood pressure monitoring; we study the pathogenesis of hypertension; and we study the therapeutic management of hypertension, both lifestyle modifications and pharmacologic management.

Is there a particular study that you could highlight that you are perhaps most proud of, or one that has had a real impact on the management of hypertension?

We just published a randomized controlled trial on the efficacy of antihypertensive treatment for target organ protection in patients with masked hypertension, which means patients who had elevated ambulatory blood pressure but normal clinic blood pressure. We had previously not really included those patients in clinical trials. It was published in eClinicalMedicine. We found that if we treat those people with elevated ambulatory blood pressure but normal clinic blood pressure, it may provide protection against organ damage, arterial stiffness, and albuminuria. It's an intermediary outcomes study, not a hard outcomes study, but we are planning a hard outcomes study in patients with a history of stroke . So hopefully in a few years, we can do more work in this direction.

What's your overall philosophy for treating hypertension?

First of all, you have to measure blood pressure in almost everybody, and you need to measure accurately. Then you treat early with antihypertensive medication, but not too much, and lifestyle modification.
