Online Nursing Degrees in the Philippines

Amanda rogers, 10 aug 2018.

Only one Philippine school offers an online nursing degree.

Not everyone who wants to get into the field of nursing has the time, money or academic background for a traditional education. The good news is they don’t have to. Earning a degree online has become one of the most popular education alternatives in countries all over the world, and the Philippines is no exception. Due to the improving reputation of online learning and the many advantages it offers to perspective students, more and more people are taking advantage of this convenient and effective option.

1 Where to Find an Online Nursing Program in the Philippines

A trending approach to seeking a remote nursing education is to enroll in the University of Philippines Open University because of a program called DEMAND. The Distance Education Master of Arts in Nursing Degree is gaining popularity because it offers a quality education that is available, accessible and affordable to professional nurses in the Philippines as well as abroad.

Worried about whether or not the online nursing schools in the Philippines are reputable? According to the Commission on Higher Education, the UP OpenU has gained the distinction of being the National Center of Excellence in Open Learning and Distance Education. This distinction not only recognizes the program achievements in this field but also its vital role in pushing the frontiers of learning in service to the Filipino nation.

2 Long Distance Learning in the Philippines

You can get a two-year nursing degree in the Philippines. You can also earn your Master of Arts in Nursing through the DEMAND program in just two years. However, the majority of graduates take closer to three years because of time restraints due to jobs or other obligations. Students with busy lives and unpredictable schedules pursue this program because it offers the flexibility a more traditional education cannot provide.

The DEMAND program can help you meet whatever your goals are in the nursing field, whether it be a graduate degree, masters, post-baccalaureate or doctoral. The faculty will help you create the most suitable time line for your scheduling needs and make earning a Philippine nursing degree possible.

3 How Do Teachers and Students Interact?

There aren't any classrooms or lecture halls when it comes to online nursing and the Philippines. UPOU has course sites called, “virtual classrooms.” This allows for students to log in and study any course, no matter where they are located in the world. All the interaction between teacher and student happens via the internet. This type of online nursing program in the Philippines makes for an education without borders.

UPOU students are still expected to show up for class, perform learning activities and complete course requirements. The good news is they can do it in a tent on the Serengeti or in their pajamas if they want. Everything a student needs can be found on their website from academic interactions, to online quizzes, chats and submission of homework. The materials for the course also come from the internet in the form of online articles and videos and print modules.

The headquarters of the U.P. Open University is located in scenic Los Banos, Laguna, which looks out on the majestic Mount Makiling. Although the remote education may meet all your needs for physical freedom, there is certainly incentive to take a trip to the Philippines and visit your future alma mater.

Program Description

The Master of Arts in Nursing program at UP Open University offers quality education available, accessible, and affordable to professional nurses in the country and abroad. It is intended for Filipino nurses working either in the far regions of the country or abroad where getting higher education is difficult. It is the opportunity for nurses working full-time or who cannot leave their work or family to get a post-graduate degree. It provides a flexible program that suit their time, availability and interest.

Students can choose from four major tracks: adult health nursing, maternal child nursing, nursing administration and gerontology and geriatrics nursing. Adult health nursing provides a framework for caring for clients with different health conditions such as cardiovascular and cancer. Maternal and child nursing covers care of the mother and child in different health conditions. Gerontology and geriatrics nursing deals with the care of the older person. Nursing administration provides diverse administrative perspectives in health human resources and organizational development. Major courses include clinical practicum to provide experiential learning.

The program aims to develop professional nurses who are able to:

  • Apply their understanding of nursing theories, research principles, methodologies to current problems and issues affecting the nursing profession and the health care delivery system;
  • Gain insight into self and others as fully functioning individuals;

The GWA is an acronym that stands for General Weighted Average. This is the computed average of the grades acquired from all courses enrolled during an entire academic year.

For incoming freshmen, note that grades in ALL courses in the First Year Level, except PE and NSTP, are included in the computation of GWA.

online nursing courses philippines

As stipulated in the College of Nursing Contract, the following are the qualifications for admission to the Second Year:

  • Meeting the cut-off grade determined by the Admission and Promotion Committee
  • Passing ALL courses in the First Year
  • Passing the physical examination
  • Submission of a Certificate of Good Moral Character from the class adviser, SWDB Coordinator, and guidance counselor

The required GWA or cut-off grade in order to qualify to Second Year will be determined by the Admission and Promotion Committee of the College of Nursing at the end of the academic year. Determining of the cut-off grade will depend on the batch performance. In the previous academic years, however, a GWA of 2.00 has been the usual cut-off grade.

If a student meets the required GWA cut-off grade but incurs a failing or incomplete grade in NSTP or PE, as specified in the College of Nursing Contract, he/she will not qualify for admission in the Second Year. As specified in the College of Nursing Contract, passing ALL courses in the First Year, which include PE and NSTP, is one of the requirements in order to qualify to Second Year.

There are two possible ways of incurring a failing grade.

  • Failure to meet the academic requirements set by the professor
  • Failure due to Absences (FA).

CPD for Nurses in the Philippines: Its Importance and How to Earn Units

  • September 15, 2023

The field of healthcare is dynamic, with new knowledge and regulations continuously emerging. Thus, it is imperative for anyone who works in this field to be constantly updated on the latest developments, including nurses. This is why the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) has mandated CPD units for PRC renewal of nurses in the Philippines.

The CPD units are not only a requirement for license renewal but are a way to inspire nursing professionals’ commitment to lifelong learning and professional growth that will be the foundation for providing the highest quality of care to patients.

In this article, we’ll explore what is CPD, ways to earn units, and the importance of CPD courses in the Philippines for nurses.

nurse

What is CPD for Nurses?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development, which refers to the ongoing process of learning, acquiring new skills, and enhancing existing ones to keep up with the fast-evolving landscape of healthcare.

CPD builds on the rigorous education and training nurses undergo before they become professionals, ensuring that they remain knowledgeable and competent in delivering safe and effective care.

How Many CPD Units are Required for Nurses?

Given the complex purpose of CPD for nurses, it encompasses a range of learning activities and covers a variety of topics.

As such, the Philippine Board of Nursing has mandated that nurses must earn 15 credit units every three years in order to renew their licenses. This means that nurses must earn at least five units every year.

The Importance of CPD for Nurses in the Philippines

Continuing professional development is not just another requirement for renewing a PRC license. It has numerous benefits for nurses, the healthcare industry, and society.

Expanding Skills and Knowledge

The main goal of CPD for nurses is to expand their skills and knowledge. While there is no doubt that they have mastered the necessary skills and knowledge needed to become professional nurses, they still have the responsibility to continually improve their skills and update their knowledge.

Continued learning helps nurses uphold the highest standards of professionalism and ethics, which can likely have a positive impact on patient outcomes.

Growing as a Professional

At the heart of professional growth is continued professional development – a dedication to learning, expanding one’s skill set, and exploring new areas of interest. The CPD unit requirement encourages and allows professional nurses to continue learning and enhancing their competencies.

Through continued learning, nurses acquire knowledge and skills that can allow them to improve their practice, whether that’s providing care or managing a team.

Advancing Your Career

As professionals earn more skills and credentials, new career opportunities inevitably open. They may become qualified for promotions and higher salaries.

More importantly, with continued professional development, nursing professionals can step into their new roles as competent and capable of instilling positive change for fellow nurses and patients under their care.

Ensuring Regulatory Compliance

As you already know, there is a required number of CPD units for PRC renewal for nurses . Nurses who failed to earn the required units cannot renew their license, and thus cannot practice as a nurse.

Additionally, the online CPD for nurses can be a way for nurses to stay up-to-date on new national and international standards and regulations pertinent to their profession. This way, they can remain compliant with all relevant standards and ensure the integrity of the nursing profession.

Improving Quality of Patient Care

The quality of patient care is arguably the most important aspect of healthcare. By remaining updated on the latest advancements in healthcare and/or their specialization, nurses can be equipped to provide safe, evidence-based care, resulting in better patient outcomes.

Building Confidence and Reputation

When nursing professionals are armed with the latest knowledge and skills, they become more confident in their capabilities to provide care. It also helps establish the professional as a credible leader that can be trusted to lead and mentor newer nursing professionals.

Moreover, with confidence and a positive reputation backed by prestigious credentials, nurses can qualify for higher positions in their respective institutions.

Achieving Job Satisfaction

Lifelong learning is as intellectually stimulating as it is fulfilling. CPD can help nurses advance their careers, which could lead to better compensation and job security. However, it also allows nurses to stay passionate about their vocation, thus helping boost job satisfaction and their overall well-being.

How to Get CPD Units for Nurses?

Nurses have a variety of options for earning CPD units. The Continuing Professional Development Council of Nursing specified activities that count toward the required units. Nursing professionals may choose between informal and formal learning activities and professional work experiences.

Here are ways registered nurses can earn CPD units:

Non-Formal Learning Activities

  • Participating in a seminar, workshop, training, or a capacity building event
  • Participating in in-service training sponsored by an employer
  • Acting as a resource speaker, panelist, facilitator, or monitor of a seminar, workshop, training, or capacity-building activity

Formal Learning Activities

  • Pursuing a postgraduate degree
  • Peer review, edit, or publish research or an article in a reputable journal
  • Development of training module/s
  • Joining study tours
  • Consultancy services (without professional fee)
  • Joining a socio-civic activity as a nurse
  • Recognitions/awards/titles
  • Completion of non-degree courses, such as clinical skills training
  • Taking on an online CPD for nurses from an accredited CPD provider

Self-Directed Learning Activities

  • Acting as professional chair, professor, or thesis adviser at an academic institution or a CPD provider
  • Participating or acting as a resource speaker or researcher in a fellowship grant

These different ways nurses can earn CPD units focus on learning and contributing to the advancement of healthcare in the Philippines. Ultimately, these activities allow nurses to enrich their field and elevate the standards of care in the country, which benefits everyone.

i cant see your contact information which i needed for verification of students that was graduated by your institution.thank you

Hi, I’m currenty a call center agent right now and already a commerce gradute but I am thinking of enrolling into Nursing. If ever I will enroll into nursing, will my minor subjects be credited so I don’t have to take it again? Can you please send me the list of major subjects including the minor subjects so I can check if I still need to take those subjects or if they can be credited already. Thank you so much!

my email add: [email protected]

Credits earned for general education subjects are typically carried over to the next course. Some schools have limits on the maximum number of units that can be carried over though, so you might want to contact the school you are thinking of enrolling at so they can give you a proper evaluation. Course curricula also vary per school, so it’s best if you’ll request for a copy from the school you wish to enroll at itself.

10 Schools Offering 2 Year Nursing Degree in the Philippines

Furthering your education in the medical field can be highly beneficial, check out the schools offering 2 year nursing degree in the Philippines discussed in this article.

A master’s degree is the most popular 2 year degree and most people forget about the associate degree which equally takes 2 years to complete as well.

In countries like the United States, where there are a lot of community colleges that offer hands-on training, you can find a lot of this associate degree. It takes only 2 years to complete but develops you with the skill set you need to excel in that particular field.

The associate degree isn’t that popular in many countries, including in the Philippines, but the master’s degree is very popular in countries all around the world.

A Master’s degree covers a wide variety of fields just as much as a bachelor but unlike the latter, a master’s degree will provide you with advanced knowledge and equip you with extensive skills in your field of interest.

To pursue a master’s degree, the common prerequisite is that applicants must have completed or in their final year of completing a bachelor’s degree program to be eligible for a master’s degree application.

It may interest you to know that I recently published an article on master’s degree without a bachelor , explaining the steps to take on how to pursue a master’s degree without having the common requirement which is a bachelor and also discusses the various schools where you can study master’s without bachelors.

However, in the Philippines, you cannot do masters without firstly completing a bachelor’s education. Before applying for the 2 year nursing degree in the Philippines, you must have completed a bachelor’s degree in nursing or a related field which is in the medical and healthcare field.

The MS in Nursing, commonly denoted as (MS-N) in the Philippines, is a 2 year graduate degree that improves knowledge and skills in nursing theoretical framework analysis and implementation, as well as teaching, research, and community service.

The program’s goal is to develop professionals with advanced knowledge in their chosen field of concentration, as well as clinical practice and management experience.

While some individuals settle for a Bachelor’s in Nursing others do not, but instead go further to pursue and improve their abilities and knowledge in the field.

Going for a master’s program comes with many benefits which include that an individual with a master’s degree will be highly favored by employees compared to individuals with a bachelor’s degree.

A master’s degree holder in nursing gets a higher salary, manages the department, and is highly respected than one who does not have one.

Getting a master’s degree in nursing is completely your choice and up to you to decide. The 2 year nursing degree in the Philippines discussed in this article is for those who want to further their education and enjoy the benefits that come with being a master’s degree holder.
