Spend less time on homework

How many times have you found yourself still staring at your textbook around midnight (or later!) even when you started your homework hours earlier? Those lost hours could be explained by Parkinson’s Law, which states, “Work expands to fill the time available for its completion.” In other words, if you give yourself all night to memorize those geometry formulas for your quiz tomorrow, you’ll inevitably find that a 30 minute task has somehow filled your entire evening.

We know that you have more homework than ever. But even with lots and lots to do, a few tweaks to your study routine could help you spend less time getting more accomplished. Here are 8 steps to make Parkinson’s Law work to your advantage:

1. Make a list

This should be a list of everything that has to be done that evening. And we mean, everything—from re-reading notes from this morning’s history class to quizzing yourself on Spanish vocabulary.

2. Estimate the time needed for each item on your list

You can be a little ruthless here. However long you think a task will take, try shaving off 5 or 10 minutes. But, be realistic. You won’t magically become a speed reader.

3. Gather all your gear

Collect EVERYTHING you will need for the homework you are working on (like your laptop for writing assignments and pencils for problem sets). Getting up for supplies takes you off course and makes it that much harder to get back to your homework.

The constant blings and beeps from your devices can make it impossible to focus on what you are working on. Switch off or silence your phones and tablets, or leave them in another room until it’s time to take a tech break.

5. Time yourself

Noting how much time something actually takes will help you estimate better and plan your next study session.

6. Stay on task

If you’re fact checking online, it can be so easy to surf on over to a completely unrelated site. A better strategy is to note what information you need to find online, and do it all at once at the end of the study session.

7. Take plenty of breaks

Most of us need a break between subjects or to break up long stretches of studying. Active breaks are a great way to keep your energy up. Tech breaks can be an awesome way to combat the fear of missing out that might strike while you are buried in your work, but they also tend to stretch much longer than originally intended. Stick to a break schedule of 10 minutes or so.

8. Reward yourself! 

Finish early? If you had allocated 30 minutes for reading a biology chapter and it only took 20, you can apply those extra 10 minutes to a short break—or just move on to your next task. If you stay on track, you might breeze through your work quickly enough to catch up on some Netflix.

Our best piece of advice? Keep at it. The more you use this system, the easier it will become. You’ll be surprised by how much time you can shave off homework just by focusing and committing to a distraction-free study plan.

Everyone struggles with homework sometimes, but if getting your homework done has become a chronic issue for you, then you may need a little extra help. That’s why we’ve written this article all about how to do homework. Once you’re finished reading it, you’ll know how to do homework (and have tons of new ways to motivate yourself to do homework)!

How to Do Homework: Figure Out Your Struggles 

Sometimes it feels like everything is standing between you and getting your homework done. But the truth is, most people only have one or two major roadblocks that are keeping them from getting their homework done well and on time. 

The best way to figure out how to get motivated to do homework starts with pinpointing the issues that are affecting your ability to get your assignments done. That’s why we’ve developed a short quiz to help you identify the areas where you’re struggling. 

Take the quiz below and record your answers on your phone or on a scrap piece of paper. Keep in mind there are no wrong answers! 

1. You’ve just been assigned an essay in your English class that’s due at the end of the week. What’s the first thing you do?

A. Keep it in mind, even though you won’t start it until the day before it’s due  B. Open up your planner. You’ve got to figure out when you’ll write your paper since you have band practice, a speech tournament, and your little sister’s dance recital this week, too.  C. Groan out loud. Another essay? You could barely get yourself to write the last one!  D. Start thinking about your essay topic, which makes you think about your art project that’s due the same day, which reminds you that your favorite artist might have just posted to Instagram...so you better check your feed right now. 

2. Your mom asked you to pick up your room before she gets home from work. You’ve just gotten home from school. You decide you’ll tackle your chores: 

A. Five minutes before your mom walks through the front door. As long as it gets done, who cares when you start?  B. As soon as you get home from your shift at the local grocery store.  C. After you give yourself a 15-minute pep talk about how you need to get to work.  D. You won’t get it done. Between texts from your friends, trying to watch your favorite Netflix show, and playing with your dog, you just lost track of time! 

3. You’ve signed up to wash dogs at the Humane Society to help earn money for your senior class trip. You: 

A. Show up ten minutes late. You put off leaving your house until the last minute, then got stuck in unexpected traffic on the way to the shelter.  B. Have to call and cancel at the last minute. You forgot you’d already agreed to babysit your cousin and bake cupcakes for tomorrow’s bake sale.  C. Actually arrive fifteen minutes early with extra brushes and bandanas you picked up at the store. You’re passionate about animals, so you’re excited to help out! D. Show up on time, but only get three dogs washed. You couldn’t help it: you just kept getting distracted by how cute they were!

4. You have an hour of downtime, so you decide you’re going to watch an episode of The Great British Baking Show. You: 

A. Scroll through your social media feeds for twenty minutes before hitting play, which means you’re not able to finish the whole episode. Ugh! You really wanted to see who was sent home!  B. Watch fifteen minutes until you remember you’re supposed to pick up your sister from band practice before heading to your part-time job. No GBBO for you!  C. You finish one episode, then decide to watch another even though you’ve got SAT studying to do. It’s just more fun to watch people make scones.  D. Start the episode, but only catch bits and pieces of it because you’re reading Twitter, cleaning out your backpack, and eating a snack at the same time.

5. Your teacher asks you to stay after class because you’ve missed turning in two homework assignments in a row. When she asks you what’s wrong, you say: 

A. You planned to do your assignments during lunch, but you ran out of time. You decided it would be better to turn in nothing at all than submit unfinished work.  B. You really wanted to get the assignments done, but between your extracurriculars, family commitments, and your part-time job, your homework fell through the cracks.  C. You have a hard time psyching yourself to tackle the assignments. You just can’t seem to find the motivation to work on them once you get home.  D. You tried to do them, but you had a hard time focusing. By the time you realized you hadn’t gotten anything done, it was already time to turn them in. 

Like we said earlier, there are no right or wrong answers to this quiz (though your results will be better if you answered as honestly as possible). Here’s how your answers break down: 

  • If your answers were mostly As, then your biggest struggle with doing homework is procrastination. 
  • If your answers were mostly Bs, then your biggest struggle with doing homework is time management.

How to Do Homework When You’re a Procrastinator  

Merriam Webster defines “procrastinate” as “to put off intentionally and habitually.” In other words, procrastination is when you choose to do something at the last minute on a regular basis. If you’ve ever found yourself pulling an all-nighter, trying to finish an assignment between periods, or sprinting to turn in a paper minutes before a deadline, you’ve experienced the effects of procrastination. 

If you’re a chronic procrastinator, you’re in good company. In fact, one study found that 70% to 95% of undergraduate students procrastinate when it comes to doing their homework. Unfortunately, procrastination can negatively impact your grades. Researchers have found that procrastination can lower your grade on an assignment by as much as five points ...which might not sound serious until you realize that can mean the difference between a B- and a C+. 

Procrastination can also negatively affect your health by increasing your stress levels , which can lead to other health conditions like insomnia, a weakened immune system, and even heart conditions. Getting a handle on procrastination can not only improve your grades, it can make you feel better, too! 

The big thing to understand about procrastination is that it’s not the result of laziness. Laziness is defined as being “disinclined to activity or exertion.” In other words, being lazy is all about doing nothing. But a s this Psychology Today article explains , procrastinators don’t put things off because they don’t want to work. Instead, procrastinators tend to postpone tasks they don’t want to do in favor of tasks that they perceive as either more important or more fun. Put another way, procrastinators want to do things...as long as it’s not their homework! 

3 Tips f or Conquering Procrastination 

Because putting off doing homework is a common problem, there are lots of good tactics for addressing procrastination. Keep reading for our three expert tips that will get your homework habits back on track in no time. 

#1: Create a Reward System

Like we mentioned earlier, procrastination happens when you prioritize other activities over getting your homework done. Many times, this happens because homework...well, just isn’t enjoyable. But you can add some fun back into the process by rewarding yourself for getting your work done. 

Here’s what we mean: let’s say you decide that every time you get your homework done before the day it’s due, you’ll give yourself a point. For every five points you earn, you’ll treat yourself to your favorite dessert: a chocolate cupcake! Now you have an extra (delicious!) incentive to motivate you to leave procrastination in the dust. 

If you’re not into cupcakes, don’t worry. Your reward can be anything that motivates you . Maybe it’s hanging out with your best friend or an extra ten minutes of video game time. As long as you’re choosing something that makes homework worth doing, you’ll be successful. 

#2: Have a Homework Accountability Partner 

If you’re having trouble getting yourself to start your homework ahead of time, it may be a good idea to call in reinforcements . Find a friend or classmate you can trust and explain to them that you’re trying to change your homework habits. Ask them if they’d be willing to text you to make sure you’re doing your homework and check in with you once a week to see if you’re meeting your anti-procrastination goals. 

Sharing your goals can make them feel more real, and an accountability partner can help hold you responsible for your decisions. For example, let’s say you’re tempted to put off your science lab write-up until the morning before it’s due. But you know that your accountability partner is going to text you about it tomorrow...and you don’t want to fess up that you haven’t started your assignment. A homework accountability partner can give you the extra support and incentive you need to keep your homework habits on track. 

#3: Create Your Own Due Dates 

If you’re a life-long procrastinator, you might find that changing the habit is harder than you expected. In that case, you might try using procrastination to your advantage! If you just can’t seem to stop doing your work at the last minute, try setting your own due dates for assignments that range from a day to a week before the assignment is actually due. 

Here’s what we mean. Let’s say you have a math worksheet that’s been assigned on Tuesday and is due on Friday. In your planner, you can write down the due date as Thursday instead. You may still put off your homework assignment until the last minute...but in this case, the “last minute” is a day before the assignment’s real due date . This little hack can trick your procrastination-addicted brain into planning ahead!

How to Do Homework When You’re too Busy

If you’re aiming to go to a top-tier college , you’re going to have a full plate. Because college admissions is getting more competitive, it’s important that you’re maintaining your grades , studying hard for your standardized tests , and participating in extracurriculars so your application stands out. A packed schedule can get even more hectic once you add family obligations or a part-time job to the mix. 

If you feel like you’re being pulled in a million directions at once, you’re not alone. Recent research has found that stress—and more severe stress-related conditions like anxiety and depression— are a major problem for high school students . In fact, one study from the American Psychological Association found that during the school year, students’ stress levels are higher than those of the adults around them. 

For students, homework is a major contributor to their overall stress levels . Many high schoolers have multiple hours of homework every night , and figuring out how to fit it into an already-packed schedule can seem impossible. 

3 Tips for Fitting Homework Into Your Busy Schedule

While it might feel like you have literally no time left in your schedule, there are still ways to make sure you’re able to get your homework done and meet your other commitments. Here are our expert homework tips for even the busiest of students. 

#1: Make a Prioritized To-Do List 

You probably already have a to-do list to keep yourself on track. The next step is to prioritize the items on your to-do list so you can see what items need your attention right away. 

Here’s how it works: at the beginning of each day, sit down and make a list of all the items you need to get done before you go to bed. This includes your homework, but it should also take into account any practices, chores, events, or job shifts you may have. Once you get everything listed out, it’s time to prioritize them using the labels A, B, and C. Here’s what those labels mean:

  • A Tasks : tasks that have to get done—like showing up at work or turning in an assignment—get an A. 
  • B Tasks : these are tasks that you would like to get done by the end of the day but aren’t as time sensitive. For example, studying for a test you have next week could be a B-level task. It’s still important, but it doesn’t have to be done right away.
  • C Tasks: these are tasks that aren’t very important and/or have no real consequences if you don’t get them done immediately. For instance, if you’re hoping to clean out your closet but it’s not an assigned chore from your parents, you could label that to-do item with a C.

Prioritizing your to-do list helps you visualize which items need your immediate attention, and which items you can leave for later. A prioritized to-do list ensures that you’re spending your time efficiently and effectively, which helps you make room in your schedule for homework. So even though you might really want to start making decorations for Homecoming (a B task), you’ll know that finishing your reading log (an A task) is more important. 

#2: Use a Planner With Time Labels

Your planner is probably packed with notes, events, and assignments already. (And if you’re not using a planner, it’s time to start!) But planners can do more for you than just remind you when an assignment is due. If you’re using a planner with time labels, it can help you visualize how you need to spend your day.

A planner with time labels breaks your day down into chunks, and you assign tasks to each chunk of time. For example, you can make a note of your class schedule with assignments, block out time to study, and make sure you know when you need to be at practice. Once you know which tasks take priority, you can add them to any empty spaces in your day. 

Planning out how you spend your time not only helps you use it wisely, it can help you feel less overwhelmed, too . We’re big fans of planners that include a task list ( like this one ) or have room for notes ( like this one ). 

#3: Set Reminders on Your Phone 

If you need a little extra nudge to make sure you’re getting your homework done on time, it’s a good idea to set some reminders on your phone. You don’t need a fancy app, either. You can use your alarm app to have it go off at specific times throughout the day to remind you to do your homework. This works especially well if you have a set homework time scheduled. So if you’ve decided you’re doing homework at 6:00 pm, you can set an alarm to remind you to bust out your books and get to work. 

If you use your phone as your planner, you may have the option to add alerts, emails, or notifications to scheduled events . Many calendar apps, including the one that comes with your phone, have built-in reminders that you can customize to meet your needs. So if you block off time to do your homework from 4:30 to 6:00 pm, you can set a reminder that will pop up on your phone when it’s time to get started.

How to Do Homework When You’re Unmotivated 

At first glance, it may seem like procrastination and being unmotivated are the same thing. After all, both of these issues usually result in you putting off your homework until the very last minute. 

But there’s one key difference: many procrastinators are working, they’re just prioritizing work differently. They know they’re going to start their homework...they’re just going to do it later. 

Conversely, people who are unmotivated to do homework just can’t find the willpower to tackle their assignments. Procrastinators know they’ll at least attempt the homework at the last minute, whereas people who are unmotivated struggle with convincing themselves to do it at a ll. For procrastinators, the stress comes from the inevitable time crunch. For unmotivated people, the stress comes from trying to convince themselves to do something they don’t want to do in the first place. 

Here are some common reasons students are unmotivated in doing homework : 

  • Assignments are too easy, too hard, or seemingly pointless 
  • Students aren’t interested in (or passionate about) the subject matter
  • Students are intimidated by the work and/or feels like they don’t understand the assignment 
  • Homework isn’t fun, and students would rather spend their time on things that they enjoy 

To sum it up: people who lack motivation to do their homework are more likely to not do it at all, or to spend more time worrying about doing their homework than...well, actually doing it.

3 Tips for How to Get Motivated to Do Homework

The key to getting homework done when you’re unmotivated is to figure out what does motivate you, then apply those things to homework. It sounds tricky...but it’s pretty simple once you get the hang of it! Here are our three expert tips for motivating yourself to do your homework. 

#1: Use Incremental Incentives

When you’re not motivated, it’s important to give yourself small rewards to stay focused on finishing the task at hand. The trick is to keep the incentives small and to reward yourself often. For example, maybe you’re reading a good book in your free time. For every ten minutes you spend on your homework, you get to read five pages of your book. Like we mentioned earlier, make sure you’re choosing a reward that works for you! 

So why does this technique work? Using small rewards more often allows you to experience small wins for getting your work done. Every time you make it to one of your tiny reward points, you get to celebrate your success, which gives your brain a boost of dopamine . Dopamine helps you stay motivated and also creates a feeling of satisfaction when you complete your homework !  

#2: Form a Homework Group 

If you’re having trouble motivating yourself, it’s okay to turn to others for support. Creating a homework group can help with this. Bring together a group of your friends or classmates, and pick one time a week where you meet and work on homework together. You don’t have to be in the same class, or even taking the same subjects— the goal is to encourage one another to start (and finish!) your assignments. 

Another added benefit of a homework group is that you can help one another if you’re struggling to understand the material covered in your classes. This is especially helpful if your lack of motivation comes from being intimidated by your assignments. Asking your friends for help may feel less scary than talking to your teacher...and once you get a handle on the material, your homework may become less frightening, too. 

#3: Change Up Your Environment 

If you find that you’re totally unmotivated, it may help if you find a new place to do your homework. For example, if you’ve been struggling to get your homework done at home, try spending an extra hour in the library after school instead. The change of scenery can limit your distractions and give you the energy you need to get your work done. 

If you’re stuck doing homework at home, you can still use this tip. For instance, maybe you’ve always done your homework sitting on your bed. Try relocating somewhere else, like your kitchen table, for a few weeks. You may find that setting up a new “homework spot” in your house gives you a motivational lift and helps you get your work done.

How to Do Homework When You’re Easily Distracted

We live in an always-on world, and there are tons of things clamoring for our attention. From friends and family to pop culture and social media, it seems like there’s always something (or someone!) distracting us from the things we need to do.

The 24/7 world we live in has affected our ability to focus on tasks for prolonged periods of time. Research has shown that over the past decade, an average person’s attention span has gone from 12 seconds to eight seconds . And when we do lose focus, i t takes people a long time to get back on task . One study found that it can take as long as 23 minutes to get back to work once we’ve been distracte d. No wonder it can take hours to get your homework done! 

3 Tips to Improve Your Focus

If you have a hard time focusing when you’re doing your homework, it’s a good idea to try and eliminate as many distractions as possible. Here are three expert tips for blocking out the noise so you can focus on getting your homework done. 

#1: Create a Distraction-Free Environment

Pick a place where you’ll do your homework every day, and make it as distraction-free as possible. Try to find a location where there won’t be tons of noise, and limit your access to screens while you’re doing your homework. Put together a focus-oriented playlist (or choose one on your favorite streaming service), and put your headphones on while you work. 

You may find that other people, like your friends and family, are your biggest distraction. If that’s the case, try setting up some homework boundaries. Let them know when you’ll be working on homework every day, and ask them if they’ll help you keep a quiet environment. They’ll be happy to lend a hand! 

#2: Limit Your Access to Technology 

We know, we know...this tip isn’t fun, but it does work. For homework that doesn’t require a computer, like handouts or worksheets, it’s best to put all your technology away . Turn off your television, put your phone and laptop in your backpack, and silence notifications on any wearable tech you may be sporting. If you listen to music while you work, that’s fine...but make sure you have a playlist set up so you’re not shuffling through songs once you get started on your homework. 

If your homework requires your laptop or tablet, it can be harder to limit your access to distractions. But it’s not impossible! T here are apps you can download that will block certain websites while you’re working so that you’re not tempted to scroll through Twitter or check your Facebook feed. Silence notifications and text messages on your computer, and don’t open your email account unless you absolutely have to. And if you don’t need access to the internet to complete your assignments, turn off your WiFi. Cutting out the online chatter is a great way to make sure you’re getting your homework done. 

#3: Set a Timer (the Pomodoro Technique)

Have you ever heard of the Pomodoro technique ? It’s a productivity hack that uses a timer to help you focus!

Here’s how it works: first, set a timer for 25 minutes. This is going to be your work time. During this 25 minutes, all you can do is work on whatever homework assignment you have in front of you. No email, no text messaging, no phone calls—just homework. When that timer goes off, you get to take a 5 minute break. Every time you go through one of these cycles, it’s called a “pomodoro.” For every four pomodoros you complete, you can take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes.

The pomodoro technique works through a combination of boundary setting and rewards. First, it gives you a finite amount of time to focus, so you know that you only have to work really hard for 25 minutes. Once you’ve done that, you’re rewarded with a short break where you can do whatever you want. Additionally, tracking how many pomodoros you complete can help you see how long you’re really working on your homework. (Once you start using our focus tips, you may find it doesn’t take as long as you thought!)

Two Bonus Tips for How to Do Homework Fast

Even if you’re doing everything right, there will be times when you just need to get your homework done as fast as possible. (Why do teachers always have projects due in the same week? The world may never know.)

The problem with speeding through homework is that it’s easy to make mistakes. While turning in an assignment is always better than not submitting anything at all, you want to make sure that you’re not compromising quality for speed. Simply put, the goal is to get your homework done quickly and still make a good grade on the assignment! 

Here are our two bonus tips for getting a decent grade on your homework assignments , even when you’re in a time crunch. 

#1: Do the Easy Parts First 

This is especially true if you’re working on a handout with multiple questions. Before you start working on the assignment, read through all the questions and problems. As you do, make a mark beside the questions you think are “easy” to answer .

List out each smaller task and work through the project bit by bit. You can even use programs and apps like Trello, Asana, or Notion to create daily to-do lists and keep tabs on your progress.

When you do this, the tasks become much more doable, so you’ll be able to submit your assignments on time.

Which assignments are due the soonest? And which tasks account for what percentage of your overall grade?

At times, it can feel difficult, or perhaps even impossible, to tackle all of your homework, deadlines, assignments, and studying. After all, you’re probably participating in multiple extracurriculars, working, volunteering, and taking care of family responsibilities. You might even be worrying about applying to college. So how can you learn to handle all of your homework while remaining sane?

By setting good studying habits now, you will be setting yourself up to become a better student in the future. There’s no better time to begin improving yourself as a student than right now—you’ll also give yourself a fresh start for college and beyond. Keep reading for tips and tricks on how to finally get a handle on all your homework!

Create a study space

It can be difficult — or even impossible—to study if the environment in which you are studying is distracting you. If you try to do your homework in your bedroom or at a friend’s house, you might find it impossible to focus. After all, who wouldn’t be distracted in these scenarios?

Instead of doing your homework on your laptop while lying in bed, try sitting up at a desk in a quiet room. Be sure you have all the supplies that you need, like pencils, pens, paper, your school worksheets, a calculator, and a ruler. You don’t need to create a ridiculously high-tech study room, this just needs to be a place that will help you feel productive and that won’t distract you.

Be sure to eat a healthy snack before you do your homework so that you don’t get distracted by your grumbling stomach. Consider eating something that isn’t too sugary or fatty, rather, you should eat something with protein or with fruits and vegetables that will give you lots of energy over a longer period of time.

If you don’t have a sufficient study space at home, consider visiting a local library or coffee shop to do your work. These spaces will usually be filled with other people who are doing work as well, which can be a useful motivational tool!

It’s always a good idea to take a moment to think about your deadlines and the time commitment that is required for each of your assignments. Try to tackle the biggest and most strenuous assignments first, keeping in mind the due dates for each.

Remember to be realistic . For instance, if you have a 10 page paper due on Friday, don’t wait until Thursday night to start writing it. Instead, you should make a plan to tackle approximately 3 or 4 pages of your per day, which means that you should start on Sunday or Monday. Be sure to also leave a buffer day so that you can edit your paper, proofread it and cite your sources!

Your plans for completing your homework might vary based on your ability and/or level of familiarity with the subject or assignment. This is totally ok, and the more familiar you are with your own abilities, the better! Whatever you do, just make sure that you don’t end up lying to yourself about deadlines. Don’t tell yourself that you can slack off and tackle a ridiculous workload at the last minute—you can’t!

In terms of planning, it might also help you to make a schedule, a google calendar, a to do list or a weekly plan. Many people like being able to see the amount of free time they have available laid out visually so that they can plan when they will get all of their homework done!

Develop a routine

Developing a routine can help you become more effective at doing your homework. Try to do your homework at the same time each day, or at a similar time each week. Devote a certain amount of hours to a certain assignment that you have, and stick to this amount of time.

Forming a routine will help you build good habits, and it will also help you get into the  routine of reviewing the new information that you learned in your classes each day!

It is much easier to break off little pieces of your assignments and do them over time rather than cramming them in at the last minute. Learn your own learning style

Everyone learns a little bit differently, and it’s important that you get to know yourself and your own learning style: are you a visual learner? Auditory? Kinesthetic? A mixture?

You can try finding out which type of learner you are through online quizzes, or perhaps you’ve already determined what type you are in school. You might also figure it out through trial and error—perhaps flashcards don’t help you retain important information, but writing an outline of the chapter or unit in your textbook does. Don’t be afraid to try out new methods of studying; you never know what will work for you!

Try to determine the circumstances under which you study best: in the library? At your desk? At the kitchen table? Do you work well under pressure, or do you prefer to finish your assignments well before the deadline? Do you study more effectively late at night, or early in the morning? Take note of your own tendencies, and again, don’t be afraid to experiment and try out new methods.

Understanding the best ways in which you can learn will also be a great head start for college—just remember to be patient and kind to yourself throughout this process of discovery.

Ask for help

If you’re really stuck on a certain assignment, try asking for help from someone you trust: a friend, a classmate, an older sibling, a parent…

If you’re still stuck even after receiving help from your loved ones, consider asking your teacher for help. You might even consider staying to talk to your teacher after school to make sure you really understand the assignment! After all, learning your limitations and figuring out who to turn to when you’re stuck is another really wonderful step to take before starting college!

Take breaks

It doesn’t matter who you are, no one is able to study or do homework effectively for 12 hours straight. The average human attention span is around 30 minutes, so if you feel yourself starting to get distracted, don’t hesitate to get up from your seat and take a quick break!

Try going for a jog, making yourself a healthy snack, practicing playing an instrument, sending a text to a friend—just be sure to get back to work once you’re done!

If you find that you’re going to have to work for a particularly long period of time, be sure to take breaks periodically and set up rewards for yourself. Use these rewards to motivate yourself to focus your full attention on the task at hand up until your next break. For instance, you might say to yourself, “if I study calc for 3 hours, then I can take a 30 minute break by watching an episode of my favorite tv show….” There’s nothing wrong with rewarding yourself as long as you use these breaks to keep yourself motivated and focused.

Having a lot of homework can feel difficult and overwhelming, but you can use these feelings to motivate yourself. Getting a handle on this workload will also help you prepare for college!

Overall, the more you are able to understand yourself and your study habits, the more successful you will be. Studies have shown that the most effective way to retain new material is with spaced repetition . This means engaging with the concepts consistently over a longer span of time.

If you want to cut down on the all-nighters, try these six easy tips to create a homework and studying schedule that actually works.

1. Review Your Homework in Advance

First, set some time aside at the beginning of your semester or school term to look over your assignments. Make sure you understand:

  • What each one entails
  • How much time each task will take
  • Its due date

Then, check to see if you need any additional resources. For example, you may need a library book to complete an assignment. Nothing will throw off your schedule more than sitting down at your desk only to find out that you don’t have what you need to do the work. Reviewing your assignments before they’re due will help with efficiency once you start working.

2. Make Your Schedule as Specific as Possible

Once you have a list of everything you need to do, turn it into a daily or weekly schedule. Decide which tasks you want to do first and when. Then, you can write it in a planner or use an Excel template to create a printable homework chart.

Avoid generalized terms like “study Spanish for two hours.” Otherwise, you’ll be tempted to fill the time with the easiest task that falls into that category.

Instead, list specific items like, “write book report” or “study flash cards.” This way, you know exactly what you need to do and are less likely to put it off.

3. Find Your Preferred Study Routine

Sometimes you have to do homework when you’re tired or aren’t feeling well, but that doesn’t mean you should totally ignore what your body’s telling you.

5. Create a Productive Workspace

Using the same workspace every day can help you stick to your homework schedule. Avoid distracting places like the living room or kitchen, and try not to work on your bed or in front of the TV. Even small things, like making sure your laptop is charged or putting on your favorite study playlist, can make a big difference in your productivity.

Ideally, you should set aside a desk in a quiet room that’s comfortable enough to sit at for a few hours at a time. The more you use it for studying, the more you’ll associate it with productivity and be in the right headspace to get work done.

It's tempting to keep putting off the tasks we don't enjoy. Even though we know it will lead to more stress later, it's common to avoid starting or finishing things we don't really want to do.

Procrastination is the act of delaying or putting off tasks until the last minute or past their deadline. It's not just a time management problem. Researchers suggest that it's a failure in self-regulation that leads us to act irrationally. We put things off, even though we know this delay will lead to negative consequences.

How Common Is Procrastination?

While some people are better at motivating themselves to tackle unpleasant tasks, procrastination is a highly prevalent problem. Among college students, nearly all admitted to procrastinating sometimes, while 75% described themselves as habitual procrastinators.

No matter how well-organized and committed you are, chances are you have found yourself frittering away hours on trivial pursuits (watching TV, scrolling through your Facebook feed, shopping online, etc.) when you should have been spending that time on work or school-related projects.

In most cases, procrastination is not a sign of a serious problem. It's a common tendency that most people resort to at some point. Let's take a closer look at why it happens, its impact, and what you can do to stop procrastinating.

What Causes Procrastination?

Remember that time that you thought you had a week left to finish a project that was really due the next day? How about the time you decided not to clean up your apartment because you "didn't feel like doing it right now?"

We often assume that projects won't take as long to finish as they really will, which can lead to a false sense of security when we believe that we still have plenty of time to complete these tasks.

One of the biggest factors contributing to procrastination is the notion that we have to feel inspired or motivated to work on a task at a particular moment.

The reality is that if you wait until you're in the right frame of mind to do certain tasks (especially undesirable ones), you will probably find that the right time simply never comes along and the task never gets completed.

Waiting for motivation isn't the only problem that contributes to procrastination, however. The following are a few other factors that can play a role.

Researchers suggest that procrastination can be particularly pronounced among students. An estimated 75% of students procrastinate regularly, and around half of these students feel that this behavior is a persistent problem.

According to researchers, some major cognitive distortions lead to academic procrastination. Students tend to:

  • Overestimate how much time they have left to perform tasks
  • Overestimate how motivated they will be in the future
  • Underestimate how long certain activities will take to complete
  • Mistakenly assume that they need to be in the right frame of mind to work on a project

Present Bias

The present bias is a phenomenon observed in human behavior that may result in procrastination. The present bias means that we tend to be motivated more by immediate gratification or rewards than we are by long-term rewards. This is why it feels good in the moment to procrastinate.

For example, the immediate reward of staying in bed and watching TV is more appealing than the long-term reward of publishing a blog post, which would take much longer to accomplish.

Procrastination can also be a result of depression . Feelings of hopelessness , helplessness, and a lack of energy can make it difficult to start (and finish) the simplest task. Depression can also lead to self-doubt . When you can't figure out how to tackle a project or feel insecure about your abilities, you might find it easier to put it off.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Procrastination is also pretty common in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder . One reason is that OCD is often linked with maladaptive perfectionism, which causes fears about making new mistakes, doubts about whether you are doing something correctly, and worry over others' expectations of you.

People with OCD also often have a propensity toward indecision, causing them to procrastinate rather than make a decision.

Many adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) struggle with procrastination. When you're so distracted by outside stimuli, as well as internal thoughts, it can be hard to get started on a task, especially if that task is difficult or not interesting to you.

Is Procrastination a Mental Illness?

Procrastination itself is not a mental illness. But in some cases, it may be characteristic of an underlying mental health condition such as depression, OCD, or ADHD.

Why Do You Procrastinate?

We often come up with several excuses or rationalizations to justify our behavior. The following are just a few of the common reasons why people tend to procrastinate:

  • Not knowing what needs to be done
  • Not knowing how to do something
  • Not wanting to do something
  • Not caring if it gets done or not
  • Not caring when something gets done
  • Not feeling in the mood to do it
  • Being in the habit of waiting until the last minute
  • Believing that you work better under pressure
  • Thinking that you can finish it at the last minute
  • Lacking the initiative to get started
  • Blaming sickness or poor health
  • Waiting for the right moment
  • Needing time to think about the task
  • Delaying one task in favor of working on another

Some researchers classify two types of procrastinators: passive and active procrastinators.

  • Passive procrastinators : Delay the task because they have trouble making decisions and acting on them
  • Active procrastinators : Delay the task purposefully because working under pressure allows them to "feel challenged and motivated"

Others define the types of procrastinators based on different behavioral styles of procrastination, including:

Procrastinators vs. Non-Procrastinators

If you tend to put things off, you might wonder exactly what makes non-procrastinators different. According to the American Psychological Association, people who don't procrastinate tend to focus more on the task itself. Rather than worrying about how other people see them, they are more concerned with how they see themselves.

People who don't procrastinate also tend to be high in the personality trait known as conscientiousness , one of the broad dispositions identified by the Big Five personality theory. People with high conscientiousness also tend to be high in other areas, including self-discipline, persistence, and personal responsibility.

The Negative Impact of Procrastination

It becomes a more serious issue when procrastination is chronic and begins to impact a person's daily life seriously. In such instances, it's not just a matter of poor time management skills; it's a major part of their lifestyle.

Perhaps they pay their bills late, don't start work on big projects until the night before the deadline, delay gift shopping until the day before a birthday, and even file their income tax returns late.

Unfortunately, this procrastination can have a serious impact on many life areas, including a person's mental health and social, professional, and financial well-being:

  • Higher levels of stress and illness
  • Increased burden placed on social relationships
  • Resentment from friends, family, co-workers, and fellow students
  • Consequences of delinquent bills and income tax returns

How to Overcome Procrastination

Students Who Turn in Work at the Last Minute Get Worse Grades, Study Finds

P rocrastinators, you’ve been warned — a new study suggests that students who turn in homework at the last minute get worse grades.

Two professors at the Warwick Business School in the United Kingdom report that submitting assignments just before they’re due corresponded with, at worst, a five-percent drop in grades.

Researchers David Arnott and Scott Dacko looked at the final assignments from 504 first-year students and 273 third-year students in marketing classes in the U.K., where papers are graded by marks out of 100.

Of the 777 students involved, 86.1 percent waited until the last 24 hours to turn in work, earning an average score of 64.04, compared to early submitters’ average of 64.32 — roughly equivalent to a ‘B’ grade.

But the average score for the most part continued to drop by the hour, and those who turned in the assignment at the last minute had the lowest average grade of around 59, or around a C+.

The researchers, who presented the paper at the European Marketing Academy conference, hope their data could lead more schools to identify chronic procrastinators early, in hopes of intervening and providing support and resources for breaking the habit.

Procrastinators, rejoice! How waiting until the last minute can help us

In 1970, a magazine hired a young journalist to cover the Kentucky Derby. The journalist attended the race and took notes, but when it came to actually writing the piece, he was seriously delayed. When the deadline came, in lieu of a completed article, he hastily ripped out pages from his notebook and sent them off to the press.

While that severe procrastination and haphazard work could easily have been the end of his career, the resulting article, “The 
Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved,” went on to become one of Hunter S. Thompson’s most famous pieces, launching an entire genre known as gonzo journalism.

The Benefits Of Procrastination

Procrastination is bad—so we’ve been told, time and time again. And yet, the pages of history are filled with stories of famous procrastinators. Architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed his most esteemed masterpiece, Fallingwater, in just two hours, spurred on by the fact that his client was about to visit to check on his progress. Author Margaret Atwood has said that she “used to spend the morning procrastinating and worrying, then plunge into the manuscript in a frenzy of anxiety around 3:00.” And so severe was Herman Melville’s procrastination that he reportedly had his wife chain him to his desk so he could finish writing Moby Dick .

Now, surely some of you are reading this and shouting at your screen, “Correlation doesn’t imply causation!” And, fair enough, that’s true. But what these stories show is that these people succeeded in big ways, at least in spite of their procrastination.

Before we dive into the benefits of procrastination, let’s start with an operating definition of the word, as debates over whether procrastination is good or bad often arise simply from a difference in semantics. While some, including psychological scientist and procrastination opposer Timothy A. Pychyl , define procrastination as “voluntary delay of intended action with the expectation of a possible worse outcome,” Merriam-Webster defines “procrastinate” as “to put off intentionally the doing of something that should be done.” The dictionary definition is the one I’m talking about here:

Procrastination is when you have time to do something, but you deliberately wait until the last minute to do it.

While writing a piece “in praise” of procrastination can be contentious, it’s hard to deny that procrastination does have its upsides. Below, l’ll try to offer a balanced view, sharing both the benefits of procrastination and its negative effects.

1. Putting things off decreases stress levels (at first).

In 1997, researchers Roy Baumeister and Dianne Tice conducted two studies on college students to determine if procrastination had any effect on grades, health, or well-being. What they found in Study 1 is that, while procrastinators received lower grades, they reported better health than non-procrastinators. The researchers noted, however, that this could be because Study 1 was conducted early in the semester, and any negative effects on health could be expected to occur late in the semester, when deadlines and exams loomed.

To account for this bias, Baumeister and Tice conducted Study 2 later in the semester, replicating the methods of Study 1. This time, the procrastinators reported more symptoms of illness, more stress, and more healthcare visits than the non-procrastinators, leading the researchers to conclude: “Procrastinators may enjoy a healthy, stress-free life when deadlines are far off, but they suffer more than other people when deadlines are imminent.”

2. Procrastination boosts creativity.

University of Pennsylvania professor Adam Grant says that our first ideas are often our most conventional , and if we wait and give our ideas time to stew, we’ll come up with something truly original. His book Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World compiles research and examples supporting the theory that procrastination boosts creativity. His new way of thinking (Grant was previously a “pre-crastinator” who finished tasks as soon as possible) was inspired by one of his former students, Jihae Shin.

In her dissertation , Shin, now a professor at the University of Wisconsin, surveyed employees at two different companies asking about work tasks, performance level, and procrastination level. She then asked supervisors to rate each employee’s performance. The results showed that the employees who procrastinated were often the most creative.

3. Waiting until the last minute makes us complete tasks faster.

Described by writer Cyril Northcote Parkinson in an essay published in The Economist in 1955, Parkinson’s Law (though not a scientific law) says that work expands based on the length of time allotted to it.

Numerous studies have been conducted on Parkinson’s Law and, according to Berkeley researchers’ review of the literature , it seems to hold true: If you give someone 30 minutes to complete a task, they’ll probably finish it in 30 minutes. Give them 15 minutes, though, and they’ll finish it in 15. The researchers noted, however, that time pressure usually sacrifices quality for speed.

So could it be that procrastinators have a method to their madness? Have they simply learned to delay a task in order to create a sense of urgency that will, in the end, save them time?

4. Intentional delay helps us make better decisions.

When it comes to decisions, do you tend to go with your gut as quickly as possible or consider your options at length? University of San Diego professor Frank Partnoy, who distrusts making snap decisions, asserts that procrastination—which he refers to as “managing delay”— can help us make better decisions .

In his book Wait: The Art and Science of Delay , Partnoy writes, “we generally should delay the moment of decision until the last possible instant.” Doing this, he says, allows us the maximum amount of time to gather information and brainstorm possible outcomes.

5. Procrastination improves our mood and boosts our energy.

If you, like many others, watch internet cat videos to put off doing work, some good news from the scientific community: An Indiana University study found that doing so can boost your mood and your energy.

In a survey of nearly 7,000 internet users, respondents reported less negative emotion (such as anxiety and sadness), more positive emotion (such as hope and happiness), and higher energy levels after watching cat videos.

“Even if they are watching cat videos on YouTube to procrastinate or while they should be working,” explains Jessica Gall Myrick, the study’s author, ”the emotional payoff may actually help people take on tough tasks afterward.”

The Dark Side Of Procrastination: Yes, It Has Negative Effects, Too

 It would be remiss to gloss over the negative effects of procrastination, even though they’re talked about often. Maybe you’ve even experienced them in your own life.

Remember the research by Baumeister and Tice that found that, in the short term, procrastinators reported better health? Here’s what they found in a second study later in the semester:

  • Procrastination is stressful in the long run. While the procrastinating students reported lower levels of stress than their non-procrastinating counterparts at the beginning of the semester, by the end of it, their stress levels were higher than those of the non-procrastinators.
  • It can make you sicker overall. Any health benefits of procrastination felt at the beginning of the semester went away by its end. In Study 2, procrastinators reported more symptoms and more visits to healthcare professionals than non-procrastinators.
  • Your performance may suffer. In both studies, Baumeister and Tice found that students who procrastinated received significantly lower grades.

What Are You Waiting For? Harness Procrastination To Serve You

If procrastination is hurting you, or if you’re using it as a form of self-sabotage , there are ways to stop procrastinating . But, on the other hand, if you’ve found that you’re successful in spite of it, or even because of it, you might already be reaping the benefits of procrastination.

So how can you harness the power of procrastination? It’s all about learning how to “manage delay,” as Partnoy puts it, to work for you. In fact, researchers Angela Hsin Chun Chu and Jin Nam Choi made an important distinction between active procrastinators (those who work best under pressure and make the deliberate decision to procrastinate) and passive procrastinators (those who are paralyzed by indecision and don’t complete work on time); they found that active procrastinators can reap some of the same benefits as non-procrastinators.

If you want to be an active procrastinator, here are some suggestions based on the research mentioned in this article for how you can make the conscious choice to procrastinate in a helpful way:

  • Decide if the task you’re procrastinating on requires creativity. If you’re procrastinating on designing a brochure for work, then maybe waiting until closer to the deadline will get your creative juices flowing. If, however, you’re procrastinating on scheduling a dental appointment, it might be best to get that one over with, as it doesn’t require creativity.
  • Ask yourself if your life circumstances will be less stressful if you wait until later. Research shows that procrastinators reap a short-term decrease in stress. So while you can’t predict the future, if you have reason to believe your schedule will be less demanding and your personal circumstances less taxing later , then it might be worth it to wait until things calm down to complete the task you’re delaying.
  • Set tight deadlines. If Parkinson’s Law holds true and the time it takes to complete a task expands according to the time allotted to it, then it doesn’t make sense to give yourself one year to, for example, declutter your closet. Give yourself just one weekend, however, and you’ll probably be done by Monday.
  • When making a decision, find out how much time you have to make it. Partnoy distrusts going with your gut. Instead, he recommends finding out how much time you have to make a decision and then waiting until the last possible minute so you can take all the time you need to make the best choice.
  • Watch a cat video? If your energy is plummeting and you’re feeling anxious, an Indiana University study suggests that it might be okay to watch that Lil Bub video (again).

While not all of us will experience a procrastination success story as monumental as that of Hunter S. Thompson, by understanding the potential benefits of procrastination, we at least stand a better chance of doing our best work. That is, if we don’t perpetually put off doing it.

With just over eight minutes remaining in the third quarter of Sunday’s Panthers-Chargers game and Carolina facing a third-and-7, quarterback Bryce Young lined up in the shotgun. Three receivers were flanked to his left, with Adam Thielen lined up farthest inside. Los Angeles did little to disguise its defensive plan, positioning one safety in the deep middle of the field and another in the intermediate area—telltale signs of man coverage. When there’s help in the middle, cornerbacks in man are taught to favor their receiver’s outside shoulder, so Thielen’s crossing route, which plays against that leverage, was almost guaranteed to pop open if the pass protection held up long enough. The Panthers had the perfect play on.

After the snap, the offensive line did its job, carving out a decently sized pocket for Young to operate from. The Panthers quarterback, who was taken first in the 2023 NFL draft after Carolina traded two first- and second-round picks plus star receiver D.J. Moore to Chicago for the pick, initially looked to Diontae Johnson before his eyes shifted toward Thielen. Thielen had already shaken free of coverage and was running into wide-open space down field, but Young didn’t see it. With his left guard, Damien Lewis, starting to cede ground to Khalil Mack, Young panicked, dropped his eyes, and tried exiting the pocket before getting enveloped by Joey Bosa for a drive-ending sack. Thielen had been open. The offensive line had held up. The ball just wasn’t thrown.

After the play, the CBS broadcast showed a visibly frustrated Thielen venting on his way to the bench. And with his team down 23-3, it was hard to blame him.

Thielen said he regretted the incident after the game: “When you put so much into this game—into game planning, into how you practice, how you fight through some stuff—you just want to see progression. You want to see us moving forward as a team,” he said. “So, yeah, boiled over frustration.”

But while Thielen said he didn’t blame Young for the issues the offense was having, the play call in that instance was the correct one. The pass protection was sound. The primary receiver on the play got wide-ass open. The quarterback just had to make the throw, and he didn’t. That’s been a common occurrence throughout Young’s 18 starts in Carolina. He has yet to find comfort in an NFL pocket, which is the root cause of his struggles. He hasn’t been accurate, and the play-making ability that helped him win a Heisman Trophy at Alabama hasn’t translated at the next level. He’s looked out of his depth since he first stepped on the field and has shown no signs of improvement. So now the team is moving forward.

On Monday, first-year head coach Dave Canales announced that Andy Dalton would be taking over the Panthers’ starting quarterback job—at least for the time being. Canales claims that Young is still the team’s quarterback (just not the starting one) and that he has a future in Carolina. But what that future is remains to be seen. Young will now be parked on the bench for at least the near future, with his development taking place behind the scenes. Maybe that will change things for the no. 1 pick, allowing him to work through his mistakes without affecting the team’s on-field performance or developing bad habits—while not getting ridiculed on social media. But it’s worth asking whether any of this is even salvageable. Whether Young is a quarterback worth fighting for. And if not, where do the Panthers, who gave up so much to get him, go from here?

The one perk of rooting for a team owned by David Tepper is that you never have to wait too long for him to make up his mind. Impatience has been somewhat of a theme for Tepper since he bought the Panthers in 2018, leading to multiple coaching changes, quick-trigger hires, and even the decision to trade for Young in the first place. Back in 2019, when Tepper was looking for a new coach, he extended Rhule an offer the day of their interview, picking him before the front office had conducted all of its scheduled meetings with other candidates. Tepper laid out his vision for a five-year plan under Rhule that would turn Carolina into a perennial winner. Then the coach was fired midway through his third season. Rhule should consider himself a bit lucky, as his successor, Frank Reich, lasted only 11 games before Tepper canned him.

That impatience isn’t necessarily a bad thing—some NFL teams will hold on to coaches and general managers after they’ve lost their fastball, either out of fear of change or the prospect of getting stuck with something worse. And Tepper is certainly not a man who’ll wait around for things to work themselves out. But that thinking can also do more harm than good when you’re running an NFL franchise and trying to skip over some necessary steps on the road to building a contender. Enter the trade for Young.

Before the Panthers struck their deal with Chicago, they had another trade in place that would have moved them up to the no. 2 pick, as opposed to the first. As Tepper explained last November, it was a three-team trade that also included Houston. The Texans would get Chicago’s no. 1 pick, Carolina would get the second pick, and Chicago would drop down to the ninth pick, where the Panthers were originally slated to draft.

Tepper said the terms of the potential deal were sorted out, but he grew impatient as the Texans took their time finalizing it. “We waited, and you have to appreciate [that] I come from a world where you do trades, and I don’t love when trades don’t happen right away. So I’m driving [GM] Scott [Fitterer] crazy. I’m saying, ‘What’s going on with these guys? This doesn’t feel right.’”

After mulling over the trade, Houston changed its mind and backed out. Less than 24 hours later, it was announced that Chicago would be trading the pick to Carolina for the no. 9 pick in that year’s draft, the Panthers’ 2024 first-rounder, two second-rounders, and Moore, who was the team’s best player at the time. It was a monumental decision, and it was made in less time than it takes to verify a YouTube account.

As Reich later explained to the team’s website, it was impatience that inspired the idea to trade up in the draft in the first place. The Panthers hadn’t made the playoffs since 2017, and the franchise saw quarterback play as the primary cause of the drought. “We’ve not won a bunch of games in the last few years,” Reich said. “So how many years can you go? Can you keep putting off this thing to take your shot and get your guy?”

The Panthers quickly became convinced that Young was their guy. The team did its due diligence during the pre-draft evaluation process. They were enamored of Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, who has since blossomed into a star in Houston. They were intrigued by the physical abilities of Florida’s Anthony Richardson, which have Colts fans dreaming of a bright future. But Young was always their guy—and according to this account of the pre-draft process , that was an opinion held by Tepper, Fitterer, and Reich. The owner, GM, and head coach were all aligned. Fitterer said his final conversation with Reich before the decision was made lasted “five seconds.”

And once they selected Young, the Panthers didn’t waste any time anointing him. Young was named the team’s starter after just one training camp practice , “beating out” Dalton for the starting job before the pads even came on. Knowing what we do now about Young and the state of his game, it’s hard to believe there was ever a legitimate competition for the starting job. Just like the pre-draft process, Young was always going to be their guy, even if they had to cut a few corners to make sure the public saw it that way too.

It remains to be seen whether Young is still their guy after he was the latest victim of Tepper’s quick hook, but it’s hard to believe that he has a future with the team after what we’ve seen from him on the field. The numbers are staggeringly bad: 37 quarterbacks have attempted at least 200 passes since the start of the 2023 season, per TruMedia. Young ranks 37th in total EPA, yards per dropback, and completion percentage. He ranks 36th in EPA per dropback and success rate, with only Bailey Zappe behind him in both metrics.

We’re just 18 games into Young’s career, but that’s a big enough sample to make some larger determinations about his play. Only two quarterbacks taken in the first round since 2000 have been worse than Young in EPA through two seasons: Akili Smith and Josh Rosen. Neither was able to turn around his career, even after a change of scenery. And the players directly under Young on the list don’t offer any hope, either. It’s a rogue’s gallery of the biggest QB busts in recent memory: Blaine Gabbert, Zach Wilson, Cade McNown, and Joey Harrington.

Alex Smith is the one quarterback who was able to flip a switch, but his breakout didn’t come until his sixth NFL season, in 2011, and that happened while he was surrounded by one of the most talented rosters in the league. He was also benched for Colin Kaepernick the following season, so that’s not exactly a dream outcome, either.

Maybe Young just needs time off the field to develop better habits—or maybe he needs to get out of Carolina altogether. The supporting cast the Panthers provided him with in 2023 was downright bad, and this season hasn’t been any better. But still, there’s very little evidence that Young hasn’t been the team’s biggest issue. He doesn’t perform well in accuracy measures, his numbers on unpressured dropbacks are horrid, and, well, it’s time we talk about the (tiny) elephant in the room: his size.

At 5-foot-10 and 205 pounds (wink), Young is one of the smallest quarterbacks ever taken in the first round. We’ve seen quarterbacks of a similar stature selected highly, and we’ve seen a few others play like first-round talents once they made it to the NFL, but we’ve never seen one succeed who has both a small frame and no standout physical traits. Kyler Murray is 5-foot-9 on his best day, but he has exceptional speed and arm strength. Russell Wilson won a Super Bowl and made a bunch of Pro Bowls in Seattle, but he’s also one of the most elusive quarterbacks the league has ever seen, with an uncanny ability to throw on the run. Drew Brees may have been 6 feet, but he commanded the pocket as if he were Josh Allen’s height. I’m still not sure how he pulled that off.

Young is quick, but he’s not exceptionally fast. His arm is fine, but not particularly strong—especially with big pass rushers in his face. And his first instinct is to back out of the pocket rather than step up into it like the best quarterbacks do. Whether he’s been inside the pocket or outside it, Young has performed poorly.

It’s difficult to find any statistical split that suggests there is something in Young’s game to build an offense around. He’s been bad in shotgun formations and even worse when playing under center. He’s been inaccurate when throwing to the deep parts of the field or throwing it underneath. The one play type where he seems to succeed—and this is relative to his own baseline performance, not the league average—is designed rollouts off play-action. He’s averaging 0.32 EPA per dropback on those plays, compared to his minus-0.24 EPA average on all plays. That makes sense for a quarterback who has issues seeing the field and throwing over the offensive line. Outside the pocket, he gets a clearer view and a cleaner platform to throw from.

The problem is that those plays can be called only in certain situations: on early downs when the defense has to respect the run. Running a play-action pass on second- or third-and-long will not have the desired effect on the defense. The other issue is that Young has been quite bad on his other dropbacks from under center. On play-action passes that keep him inside the pocket, he’s hemorrhaging minus-1.65 EPA per play, according to TruMedia. He has yet to attempt a pass without play-action from under center, so you can see how playing into this one particular strength could silo the offense.

Reich and Canales deserve some blame for the lack of development we’ve seen from Young, but there’s not much a play caller can do to work around his deficiencies. Even Young, who’s been an undersized quarterback throughout his football career, seems to be running out of answers about how to overcome his size at this level. On Sunday against the Chargers, he started jumping just to get off short throws over the line.

Per Sports Info Solutions, Young had never attempted a jump pass before the game against Los Angeles, suggesting that those were the result of desperation to find something that worked. His last throw of the game—which would turn out to be the last throw before his benching— was a jump throw on fourth-and-3 late in the loss . Despite Young’s extra effort to get the throw over the line, Chargers defensive tackle Scott Matlock, who also starts at fullback, batted it down without jumping himself. It was a play that made it abundantly clear that this wasn’t a viable situation for the offense, and that a change needed to be made if the Panthers were going to get a fair evaluation of the other 52 players on the roster.

That’s what makes it so hard to figure out where Carolina could possibly go from here, or what the team needs to clean up a mess that’s been created by an impatient owner and a bad gamble on the wrong prospect. A replacement-level starter like Dalton should allow a proper evaluation to take place over the next 15 games. By then, we’ll have a better idea of how far away this team is from playing competitive football and whether Young has a future as a starter in this league.

Moving on from Young wouldn’t be too much of a hassle for Carolina. Rookie deals are fully guaranteed but relatively cheap. The Panthers would be stuck with a $22 million dead cap charge, spread over the next two years, if they traded him in the offseason. For a team with plenty of cap space (due to their negligence and not having players worth re-signing), that’s a drop in the bucket. Carolina owns its first-round pick in 2025 and a second-round pick that it got from the Rams, so they’ll have a full slate of picks in the upcoming draft. That said, the incoming quarterback class, led by Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders and Georgia’s Carson Beck, isn’t off to a strong start this season, so Carolina shouldn’t be in a rush to use its top pick on another quarterback unless a slam-dunk prospect emerges in the next few months.

Instead, the Panthers, and Tepper, should learn from the teams they were negotiating with in the run-up to the 2023 draft and practice some patience. That led Houston to Stroud, and the following year Chicago ended up with a generational prospect in Caleb Williams, all at Carolina’s expense. The Panthers are a few years away from contention, so trading back, collecting draft capital, and waiting for the right quarterback—preferably one who isn’t a historical outlier for all the wrong reasons—seems like the obvious path forward. Whether that fits with Tepper’s timeline is another issue.

Even though your parents probably complain about how hard it was in their day, students nowadays have more homework than ever before, even when just starting their first year at middle school. That homework doesn't need to be a struggle now. Learning to plan out an efficient schedule for completing your homework, working on it effectively, and knowing when to get help with difficult assignments can help take the stress out of studying. Don't put it off any longer. See Step 1 for more information.

Working on Homework

Step 1 Make sure you have everything you need before you start.

Once you go into your space and start working, try not to leave until you've got a break scheduled. If you want a quick snack or drink, get it now before you start. Hit the bathroom and make sure you'll be able to work for the amount of time before your next break, uninterrupted.

Step 2 Eliminate as many distractions as possible.

  • It's common that students will try to multi-task, watching TV or listening to the radio or continuing to chat on Facebook or Instagram while also trying to do homework. It'll be so much more fun to do those things after you're already done with your homework, though, and your homework will take half as much time if you're focused on doing nothing but your homework.
  • Check your phone or your social networking sites during your study break, but not before. Use these distractions as a carrot, not as a pacifier.

Step 3 Concentrate on one task at a time.

If one assignment proves challenging and time-consuming, it's okay to switch for a while to something else. Just make sure to save enough time to circle back and give it another shot.

Step 4 Take a break every hour.

  • Try to figure out what works best for you. Some students might like to start their homework immediately after school to get it done as quickly as possible, while it may be better to give yourself an hour to relax before starting in on it and decompress from the long school day. Don't wait for the last minute.
  • While it may seem like a better idea to work straight through and finish, it's possible that the quality of the work you're doing will start to suffer if you don't give your mind a rest. It's difficult to think hard for more than 45 minutes at a time on a particular subject. Give yourself a rest and come back refreshed.

Step 5 Dive back in after study breaks.

  • The first fifteen minutes after a break are your most effective minutes, because your mind will be cleared, and ready to work hard. Give yourself a pep talk and dive back in, refreshed and ready.

Step 6 Create incentives to finish.

  • If you have trouble staying focused, get a parent, sibling, or friend to help keep you honest. Give them your phone while you're working to avoid the temptation to check it, or give them the video game controller so you won't be able to plug in for a few minutes of alien-hunting when you're supposed to be doing your homework. Then, when you're finished, show them the finished product and earn back your fun. Make it impossible to cheat.

Step 7 Let the homework take as long as it needs.

  • You can make yourself take enough time by having your gate-keeper (the person with your phone or video game controller) check over your homework for quality when you're done. If you know you're not going to get it anyway unless it's done right, you won't have any reason to rush. Slow down and do it right.

Step 8 Review your work after you finish.

When doing practice problems, promptly check to see if your answers are correct. Use worksheets that provide answer keys for instant feedback. Discuss answers with a classmate or find explanations online. Immediate feedback will help you correct your mistakes, avoid bad habits, and advance your learning more quickly.

Planning Your Homework

Step 1 Write out your daily homework in a list.

  • It's common to quickly write out the math problems you're supposed to do at the top of your notes, or scribble down the page number of the English reading on a textbook page, but try to recopy this information into a specific homework list so you will be sure to remember to do it.
  • Write down as many details as you can about each assignment. It's good to include the due date, corresponding textbook pages, and additional instructions from your teacher. This will help you plan your night of homework more effectively. Also, it's a good idea to write about your homework in a planner.

Step 2 Make sure you understand each assignment.

  • Homework doesn't have to wait until you get home. Look through an assignment as soon as it's been given, so you'll have the time to ask your teacher any questions you might have before you leave school for the day.

Step 3 Create a comfortable homework spot

  • At home , a desk in your bedroom might be the best place. You can shut the door and tune out any distractions. For some students, though, this is a good way to get distracted. You might have video games, computers, guitars, and all sorts of other distractions in your bedroom. It might be a better idea to sit at the kitchen table, or in the living room, where your parents can call you out for procrastinating. You'll get it done more quickly without the temptation of distraction.
  • In public , the library is a great place to study and do homework. At all libraries, it's a rule that you have to be quiet, and you won't have any of the distractions of home. The school library will often stay open after school ends, making it a good option for finishing up homework before heading home, or your school may even have an after-school study spot specifically for the purpose.   • Try to switch it up . Studying in the same place too often can make work more difficult. Some studies have shown that a change in environment can make your mind more active, since it's processing new information. You'll be able to vary your routine and remember what you learned more effectively.

Step 4 Choose the most important assignments to work on.

  • Try starting with the most difficult homework . Do you really hate the idea of getting into the algebra homework? Does reading for English take the longest? Start with the most challenging homework to give yourself the most time to complete it, then move on to the easier tasks you can complete more quickly.
  • Try starting with the most pressing homework . If you've got 20 math problems to do for tomorrow, and 20 pages to read in a novel for Friday, it's probably better to start with the math homework to make sure you'll have enough time to complete it. Make homework due the next day the priority.
  • Try starting with the most important homework . Your math homework might be difficult, but if it's only worth a few completion points, it might be less important to spend a lot of time on it than the big project for Social Studies that's due in two days. Devote the most time to the most valuable assignments.

Step 5 Make a timetable.

  • Set an alarm or a timer to keep yourself honest. The less time you spend procrastinating and checking your text messages, the more quickly you'll be done. If you think you can finish everything in a half hour, set a timer and work efficiently to finish in that amount of time. If you don't quite finish, give yourself a few extra minutes. Treat it like a drill.
  • Keep track of how long you usually spend on particular assignments on average. If your math homework typically takes you 45 minutes to finish, save that much time each night. If you start plugging away for an hour, give yourself a break and work on something else to avoid tiring out.
  • Schedule 10 minutes of break time for every 50 minutes of work time. It's important to take study breaks and give your mind a rest, or you'll work less effectively. You're not a robot!

Finding Extra Time

Step 1 Start working on it now.

  • Do you really need an hour of TV or computer after school to decompress? It might be easier to just dive into your homework and get it done while the skills are still fresh in your mind. Waiting a couple hours means you'll have to review your notes and try to get back to the same place you already were. Do it while it's fresh.
  • If you've got three days to read an assignment, don't wait until the last evening to do it all. Space it out and give yourself more time to finish. Just because you've got a due date that's a long time away doesn't mean it wouldn't be easier to finish now. Stay ahead of the game. Try either waking up earlier or going to bed later. But don't get too tired!

Step 2 Steal some homework time on the bus.

  • If you've got to read a bunch of stuff for homework, read on the bus. Pop in some headphones to white noise that'll drown out the shouting of other students and tune into your book.
  • The bus can be distracting, or it can be a great resource. Since it's full of your classmates, try to get other students to work with you and get things done more quickly. Work together on the math problems and try to figure out things together. It's not cheating if everyone's doing the work and no one's just copying. Also, you might make some new friends while you're at it!

Step 3 Work on your homework in between class periods.

  • Don't rely on this time to finish homework just before it's due. Rushing to finish your last few problems in the five minutes before you need to turn it in looks bad in front of the teacher, plus it doesn't give you any time to review your homework after you finish it. Rushing is a good way to make mistakes. And always check difficult problems you had trouble with.

Step 4 Work on homework during long waits.

  • Work on your homework while you're waiting for a ride, while you're killing time at your brother's soccer game, or while you're waiting for your friend to come over. Take advantage of any extra time you have in the day.

Getting Homework Help

Step 1 Talk to your teacher about difficult assignments.

  • Asking for help with your homework isn't a sign that you're bad at the subject or that you're "stupid." Every teacher on the planet will respect a student that takes their homework seriously enough to ask for help. Especially ask if you weren't there that day!
  • Asking for help isn't the same thing as complaining about the difficulty of homework or making excuses. Spending ten minutes doing half your math problems and leaving most of them blank because they were hard and then telling your teacher you need help isn't going to win you any favors on the due date. If it's hard, see your teacher ahead of time and find the time to get help.

Step 2 Visit the tutoring center or help desk at school.

  • If there's not an organized homework help group at your school, there are many private tutoring organizations that work both for-pay and non-profits. Sylvan Learning Center and other businesses have after-school hours that you can schedule appointments at to get help studying and completing your homework, while community centers like the YMCA, or even public libraries will often have homework help hours in your area.
  • Getting help doesn't mean that you're bad at your homework. All variety of students visit tutoring centers for extra help, just to make sure they have enough time and motivation to get everything done. It's hard being a student! There's no shame in extra help. Imagine being afraid to ask for anything! You wouldn't be able to ask in restaurants, shops, anywhere!

Step 3 Work with other students.

  • Make sure that your group study sessions don't cross the line into cheating. Dividing up an assigned so your friend does half and you copy each other's answers is considered cheating, but discussing a problem and coming up with a solution together isn't. As long as you each do the work separately, you shouldn't have any problems.

Step 4 Talk to your parents.

  • Some parents don't necessarily know how to help with your homework and might end up doing too much. Try to keep yourself honest. Asking for help doesn't mean asking your parent to do your work for you.
  • Likewise, some older relatives have outdated ways of completing specific tasks and might suggest forcefully that something you learned in class is wrong. Always use your teacher's approach as the correct approach, and discuss these alternative ways of completing an assignment with your teacher if necessary.
