Option 1: by air : .

Jumla is Connected by Flight only from Nepalgunj Airport. One can reach Talcha airport from Nepalgunj Airport. After landing in Talcha Airport one can proceed to Rara.

Option 2: Jeep service, Bus service

Early in the morning Drive to Kalikot through surket and Dailekh. After Reaching Kalikot there you can stay the night. Early in the morning Drive to Rara on the way you will visit Jumla and Mugu. After that Next Day, you can Visit Haven of World Rara.

Best Time to Travel

The best time to visit the park is in the spring, summer and autumn. As more people are now visiting the park, tourist services and infrastructure have developed over the years. However, for a great experience, it is still advisable to be self-sufficient if you are traveling alone. Lake Rara is also a popular pilgrimage site for Nepalese.

Things to do in Rara

Ride a boat in the lake.

There are paddle boats available, no motorboats here, and a morning ride is like gliding along with a mirror. this is the best time for the nature lover.

Hike to Murma Viewpoint

Hike to Murma Viewpoint, a viewpoint that allows you to see the whole lake and surrounding area, and the mountain peaks in the distance. There are some villages around the lake, but none at the edge of the water.

Talk to the local people about riding a horse, saddles provided and guides if you need them. There is a trail all the way around the lake that is lovely. and going away from the lake are open pastures if you want to take it a little faster.

Take a hammock, find a good shady spot. And if you don’t bring your own tent, (You want to sleep outside so you don’t miss the millions of stars). There is a hotel by the lake that will rent you rooms or even tents.

Rara can be reached through a flight journey from Nepalgunj to Jumla and a further 2-3 days walk from there. Life in Rara

Agriculture is the primary occupation for people in and around Rara, while some make their living by rearing goats and selling medicinal herbs.

Thakur society is dominant in the region and there is a Thakur Baba temple in the southeast corner of the Rara Lake. Locals believe that the Thakur Baba saved the region by shooting an arrow to open the passage of the lake, thus reducing the region’s vulnerability to flooding.

Rara – The Growing Tourism Destination

As part of this mission to promote tourism, Nepal tourism department has been in continuous quest of identifying new tourism spots as part of its Visit Nepal 2020 campaign .

One such tourism destination that has grown in popularity in the recent times is ‘Rara Lake’.

As a result of regional tourism promotions, Rara Lake has witnessed around 15,000 visitors till March 2019 in the new year, say the Rara National Park (RNP) Office records.

According to the records, there has been a healthy rise in domestic tourists to the place. While the number of foreign tourist arrivals remained steady.

“Though heavy snowfall had temporarily halted tourist flow, with weather clearing up through March, the number of visitors is increasing,” says Lal Bahadur Bhandari, chief warden of RNP.

With an aim to reach 100,000 tourist arrival target, Prime Minister Oli inaugurated the Karnali-Rara Visit Year campaign on April 14, 2018.

Though the annual target is far from current figures, authorities are expecting a rise in tourism footfall to the place in the days to come.

However, quality accommodation and hygiene food continue to be major hurdles for the region in drawing more tourists.

“If we are able to provide quality accommodation for tourists and other activities for visitors, we can make good earnings through domestic tourism,” adds Bhandari.

While accommodation stands as a concern, the National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act 2019 BS bars construction of hotels or any other infrastructure within national parks.

However, with the permission of the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation, the place currently has two hotels under a temporary permit.

On the other side, park officials are welcoming investors to construct hotels outside the national park.

Hope more internal support from the government side will bring out the true potential of Rara Lake as Nepal’s next-famous tourism destination.

The Rara National Park, the smallest national park in Nepal and the largest lake (108 km2) at an altitude of 2980 meters. The Rara National Park has an alpine climate with very cold winters from December to March.

The flight time from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj is 1 hour and from Nepalgunj to Jumla for about 20 minutes. There is no other flight from Kathmandu to Jumla. You can take a flight from Nepalgunj to Talcha airport or a flight from Surkhet airport to Talcha.

Another way to get there is by jeep or bus across the Karnali Highway, the most dangerous road in Nepal. The drive from Kathmandu to Surket to Kalilot to Ghamghadi takes about 20 to 22 hours from Kathmandu to Jumla.

By Bus: From Kathmandu to Neplajung: The journey takes between 16 and 20 hours. You can take a bus to Jumla. If I remember correctly, you can take a bus that goes directly from Kathmandu to Jumla and costs 2700 NRs.

By bike: You can ride a bike. The bike ride to Rara Lake is too risky due to the wrong road and road transport. But just in case it’s better to prepare for it by calling ahead. Otherwise, you can walk to the nearest town south of the lake, where you can get family houses. The accommodation on the way to Rara Lake is pretty easy. You will have clean, basic rooms with basic needs. Most of the rooms can be shared in a double room.

Due to the limited accommodation options, you should bring a tent and sleeping bags. You will also find basic food and drinks on this trip. This usually includes the basic ingredients of Dal-Bhat-Tarkari, noodles, potatoes (fried, cooked). For drinks, you get bottled water, hot water, tea. Some of the guesthouses or teahouses also offer coffee and other soft drinks.

The accommodations are also readily available and varied. Nepalgunj is a large industrial city and a center for pilgrims traveling to Mount Kailash and Manasarovar Lake in Tibet. It is also a city on the border with India. Hotels and B & Bs are priced from $ 10 to $ 65.

As soon as you leave Nepalgunj, the guesthouses are simpler but decent. In Kalikot I paid 6 USD for a room. The Dal Bhat was good, and of course, as in all parts of Nepal, you could buy beer.

You will find the only two guest houses, once you reach in Rara Lake. The food is good, the rooms are well maintained and the surroundings are beautiful on the lake shore. A room costs between USD 8 and 12.

You can expect to find bhat dal vegetables and cooked noodles almost everywhere. Description:

Rara National Park is located in the North-Westem high mountains of Nepal . The park was gazetted in 1976 to conserve the unique beauty of Lake Rara, and to protect the representative flora and fauna of the Humla-Jumla region. The park is Nepal's smallest protected area, comprising an area of 106 sq. km. There were two villages Rara and Chhapru within the park. The residents of the two villages were resettled in Banke district, outside the park.

Features: Rara Lake (Mahendra Tal), situated at an elevation of 2990 m. is the main feature of the park. The lake is oval shaped with an east-west axis, and has a maximum length of 5 km and a width of 3 km. Surrounded by magnificent conifer forests, it is Nepal's biggest lake (10.8 sq . km) with a depth of 167 m. Its radiant blue waters is home to the snow trout (Schizothorax oreinus sinuatus), the only fish recorded in the lake. During winter, bird lovers can enjoy many migratory birds. In summer, Himalayan flowers surround the lake creating a colorful landscape. The elevation of the park ranges from 2800 m to 4039 m. Chuchemara peak (4039 m) is the highest point in the park. Located on the southern side of the lake, it provides an excellent backdrop to Lake Rara. The snowcapped summits of Ruma Kand (3731m) and Malika Kand (3444m) located on the northern side of the lake, provide beautiful views of the lake to the south, and the beautiful Mugu-Kamali River valley to the north. MurmaPeak also provides and excellent view of the park area. The lake drains to Mugu-Kamali River via Nijar Khola. The majority of the vegetation in the park is dominated by blue pine. Interspersed amongst the pines, are found several species of rhododendrons.Blue pine, herbs, marshlands, and tussock grasslands inhabit the area surrounding the lake. In the Nisa khola Valley pine and spruce give way to mixed woodland containing walnuts and Himalayan popular. Rhododendron, fir, oak, and birch species can be found in the sub alpine region.

Climate: Summer is pleasant. However, winter is quite cold. The best time of year to visit the park is September/October and April to May. December through March, the temperatures drops to below freezing, and heavy snowfalls occur up to one meter, closing high passes. April to June is warm but the season gives way to monsoon season-June to August.

Flora and Fauna: The reserve is characterized by , sub-alpine and high temperate vegetation. Common plant species include fir, pine, and birch, rhododendron, hemlock, oak, juniper and spruce. The park is home to around 20 different species of mammals. They include Musk deer, Himalayan black bear, Leopard, Jackal, Himalayan tahr, Yellow throated marten, Otter, Wild dog. Common langur. Rhesus macaque and Red panda. The park has recorded 214 species of birds. Some of the important species include coots, snow cock, and different species of pheasants, grebes, mallard, common teal, red-crested pochard and gulls. During winter, many migratory birds join the residential Gallinaceous birds.

Facilities: It is advisable to bring a comprehensive first-aid kit since there is no health post in the area. Arrangements should be made through a trekking agency. There are no accommodations within the park. Trekkers must be self-sufficient in all means.

The QUEEN of Lakes

Rara Lake is the biggest and deepest freshwater lake in Nepal. In September 2007, it was declared a Ramsar site, covering 1,583 heaters including the surrounding wetland. Rara lake is located at an altitude of 2990m in Jumal and Mugu district. The lake has a maximum depth of 167m and is 5.1km long and 2.7km wide. The lake drains into the Mugu Karnali River via the Nijar River. Rara lake is located in the smallest national park in Nepal i.e. Rara National Park .

Rara lake is becoming a popular destination with a very rough route in Western Nepal for trekkers. Rara is a lake with magnificent beauty that no other lake can compete with. The lake exhibits 3 different colours in a day. The colours change from the sunrise till sunset and the reason behind it is not known. The sparkling waters of the lake are crystal clear which produces the perfect reflection of the hills around the lake.

There are other activities where explorers can indulge themselves while visiting the lake. Like, there are trekking trails to the green hills, boating in the lake, horse riding, visiting the nearby village and experiencing their local food and the warm hospitality they present to you. You can also take a detour to the forest exploring the wildlife and plants of the area and camp beside the lake and sleep, listening to the silent and gentle waves of the lake.

Rara lake has unique and rich floral and faunal species which are rare and valuable. The lake is surrounded by green hills on all sides, covered in juniper, pine and spruce forest. More than 1000 different kinds of flowers among them, 16 are endemic, 51 species of mammals and 214 species of birds can be observed in the Rara National Park. Wildlife of the park and lake include the endangered Red Panda, Musk Deer, Himalayan Black Bear, Leopard, Jackal, Himalayan Tahr, Yellow-throated Martin, Rhesus Macaque, Common Otter and many more. During winter the park is filled with bird varieties like Coots, Great-crested Grebe, Red Crested Pochard, Mallard, Common Teal, Merganser and Gulls. Migrant Water Fowl and Gallinaceous birds can also be seen during certain seasons. As for life in the lake, it holds three endemic fishes; Nepalese Snow Trout, Rara Snowtrout and Schizothorax nepalensis are the fish varieties recorded here so far.

Rara can be reached in three ways. The hard way, trekking through the jungles navigating through the steep slopes and boulders, which is a lifetime opportunity and adventure you don't want to miss. However, if trekking isn't your thing then, one can drive to Rara lake. The road takes you to a final stop, which is about half an hour walking distance to the lake. The easy way would be taking a flight to Jumla airport from the airport which is best for you. However, there are regular flights from Kathmandu, Nepalgunj and Surkhet to Jumla.

Summer is quite pleasant but winter is cold. The best visiting time to the lake is September/October and April to May. From December to March, the temperatures go low below the freezing point, and heavy snowfall occurs up to one meter, blocking the way to the lake.

Rara Lake is the biggest lake in Nepal and it’s an absolutely beautiful place. Most Nepali people even call it Heaven on Earth, yet still not many tourists dare to go to this remote place in the West of Nepal. It’s located in a National Park on 3000 meter high and the journey to get there is not that easy.

After Our Everest Base Camp Trek we weren’t planning on doing something similar anytime soon. Tired and a bit broken we went to Pokhora for rest, with only the occasional hike and mountain bike session. We did hear about this magical place called Rara Lake, and as we kept hearing the most positive comments about this place, we decided to go for it. We didn’t regret visiting Rara Lake at all…

If you are looking for real adventure, solitude and a totally unique experience, then Rara Lake is the place for you. The adventure is not the place itself, but the journey to get there – and back again. Although of course, the place itself is definitely worth the journey. It’s not touched by commercial tourism yet, and the Nepali tourists that do show up usually don’t trek to Lake Rara, but go with the bus or jeep all the way up. This means this trek can be done in almost complete solitude; you’ll only encounter local people.

Rara Lake: Heaven on Earth

Rara Lake is located in a national park in the north-western Karnali region in the Mogu district. It’s actually the biggest lake in Nepal (10.8km2) and towering high at 3000 meter in the Himalayan mountains. The oval shaped lake is about 168 meter deep and the blue water is so clear that you can see to the bottom! Snowcapped peaks surround the lake and beautiful pristine forests cover much of the National Park.

How to get to Rara Lake

Unfortunately, Rara Lake isn’t the easiest place to travel to. Maybe that’s a part of it’s charm! Still, there are various ways to get to Rara Lake. Yep, next to trekking to Heaven on Earth, you can also get there by bus, jeep and airplane.

Trekking to Rara Lake

It’s possible to get to Rara Lake by going on either a guided or independent trek. As it’s a remote area of Nepal we advice to take at least someone that can translate for you. The trek itself isn’t extremely difficult, but it’s hard to communicate with the locals and the trail isn’t clear, so you might get lost. It depends whether you are an experienced trekker or a beginner of course.

Going by bus to Rara Lake

It’s also possible to take a local or deluxe bus to Rara Lake. The road conditions are pretty bad, therefore we would not recommend this option. We experienced parts of the road ourselves and it’s seriously life threatening.

Going by jeep to Rara Lake

Another option is going by jeep and although the road conditions are bad, it’s still a lot saver than going with the bus. A jeep can manoeuvre through the mountains a lot easier than a big bulky bus.

Flying to Rara Lake

One of the scariest roads in the world

To start your trek in Jumla, you’ll need to endure a drive on one of the scariest roads in the world . During this ride and the whole trek we were the only foreigners. When trekking you roam through some of the mountain villages where no one speaks English, and people will stare at you as they aren’t used to foreigners. You’ll experience a totally different life from yours, which is truly an eye opener.

The only useful information we found before we embarked on our journey was this TripAdvisor Review . So if you’re planning to go, this blog might prepare you for this life changing journey.

We took our jungle guide Ketchup from Bardia with us on this trek. But more to be our translator, as he had never been to Rara Lake himself. It is possible to go without a guide, although we would recommend taking a guide. It makes it a lot easier to ask for directions, get accommodation plus to communicate with the locals about anything you like.

We spent about 40 – 60 $ USD a day on this trek, which includes transport, food, accommodation, a guide and the park permit (permit is 30$ USD per person). Thus, per person this would be 15 – 20 $ USD a day.

Getting to Jumla to start the trek to Rara Lake

To all the adventurers out there, or better yet, for those who aren’t afraid to die ; take a bus ride from Surkhet to Jumla in Nepal on the Karnali Highway . The views are insanely beautiful, but sometimes it feels as if the bus will tip over and fall off the mountain. Later we found out it’s even considered as one of the most dangerous roads in the world by multiple sources.

During this bus ride you’ll witness a fraction of the local life in the mountains. People often live in huts, some do have brick houses – most of the places look quite worn down. They have no heater, they make their own fire to cook and keep themselves warm. Some do have electricity for lights, often provided by solar power. We also noticed that there are a lot of very young children in the mountainside.

The first day we drove about nine hours and it was bumpy, exciting and at times very scary. Some parts of the roads were sealed, some were just dirt and rocks. The road is all twists and turns. On the bright side, along the road we found some great samosa’s for only 10 cents a piece. We love samosa’s.

We didn’t make it to Jumla in one day, so we slept in another village close by on the first night.

The second day traveling to Jumla was a much shorter bus ride, again with some bumpy dirt roads. Sometimes we had to drive over big rocks and sometimes we drove over parts of a river. But we made it to Jumla early in the morning, so we could relax and hike around.

In Jumla we stayed in a pretty good hotel, at least for what you expect in the mountains. It was called Hotel Garden View. Here you pay about 1000 rupees for a room (10$ USD), which is relatively expensive. However, there was (bad) wifi, a hot shower, electricity and even a television on our room. These are all very rare finds in the mountains!

The Trek to Rara Lake

Day 1. from jumla to nyawre.

Elevation: From 2370 meter to 3550 meter

Duration: 8.5 hours.

The first day of walking was tough. We had a climb of 5.5 hours (from 2370 meter to 3550 meter) and some parts were very steep, while some parts gradually went up. On the way we met a lot of local people. There was one big group from Jumla, that were also trekking up, but to another town. We saw the group three times when we took a rest. They gave us food (chapatti and apples) and even suggested to carry my backpack for me – which I kindly declined.

Once we were up the hill, we were very happy to have made it there. From then it would mostly be downhill to our first night stop. However, it wasn’t as easy as we initially thought. The walk was downhill alright, but you definitely feel this in your knees. Eventually it still took us three hours to get to Nyawre. We were all very tired.

The guesthouse we choose was called Roshani, after the owner. It was a very unique experience to spent the night here. We kept warm at a little stove with fire, while Roshani made us black tea that mostly consisted out of sugar. The toilet was located outside, and was only small shed with a squat toilet (of course). The whole guesthouse was located beside a rough, but beautiful river.

Before we had dinner, Jef and I had some rest in our room. Again the bed was not more than a wooden plank with some blankets over it. The walls and roof were also made of wooden planks. There were snippets of newspaper and magazines plastered on the walls to cover up holes and cracks.

During dinner there were two other men that were staying in the guesthouse. They had lost their horses and were looking for them in the neighborhood. When they asked Ketchup where we were from, they didn’t know where The Netherlands or Europe was. Ketchup told us that they probably don’t even know that they are in Asia, that they only know Nepal, India and China.

We also talked a lot about Roshani’s life. She is 25 (like us), is married and has two children. Her husband lives in Jumla with their two children. He is still studying, and their children go to school there too, while she earns the money with the guesthouse. We were particularly interested in her life in the mountains during the winter, as we already found it quite cold in the evening and nighttime. In the winter there is often a big pack of snow. She told us that she usually washes herself once a month or every two weeks. In the winter she just uses boiled water and washes herself in the hut near the river.

Day 2. From Nyawre to Jhyari

Elevation: From 3000 meter to 2800 meter

Duration: 5 hours trekking and 1.5 hours with the bus.

The walk from Nyawre to Bhubule was harder than I had hoped. The day before really was a tough walk, so I wanted an easier trail. This day I really hated trekking. Sometimes it’s like going to the gym and working out. My favorite group lesson at my gym back in the Netherlands is one of the hardest ones, but it makes you so happy once you are finished. It’s worth it – it’s a challenge. And this challenge came with a reward: Rara Lake.

It was also very hot and sunny, and we had to endure steep climbs. When we reached Bhubule I was tired, but thrilled we were there. Ketchup actually wanted to go to the next town. Every Nepali person he met told him something different about the length of the walk to Rara the next day. Some said it was only 2 hours, while others claimed it was a full day. However, I didn’t want to walk any further, and neither did Jeffrey. Mainly because we weren’t sure how long it would take to the next town and it was already 2 pm.

We put our bags in the room in our guesthouse in Bhubule, and suddenly we saw a rabbit sitting under one of the beds. I tried to catch it, just to cuddle, but the poor thing was so terrified. Turns out the guesthouse had lots and lots of rabbits next to our room. Another curious thing we found next to our room was a lady making hasj.

After we saw a jeep driving by the guesthouse, we decided to catch the next jeep or bus we found going up to a further town. Luckily, we managed to get a bus for 6 dollars in total to get to Jhyari.

It was a very dangerous, bumpy and dusty bus ride, on a totally unsealed narrow road – worse than the bus ride to Jumla. Some parts were so narrow, that I thought the bus wouldn’t fit. But we made it to Jhyari, alive ! When we got out at Jhyari, some of the passengers came out too, for a break at the campfire. One of the Nepali passengers started talking Dutch to us, which was very unexpectedly. He had lived in Belgium for seven years. Trust me, it’s very strange to meet a person that speaks Dutch (with a Belgium accent) after days in an area where no one speaks English.

The guesthouse in Jhyari was actually also quite nice (for what you expect). They got electricity 24 hours a day, which is unique in Nepal. The whole Mogu District gets the electricity from the river. We also had the best Dal Bhat in Nepal here, and even Ketchup agreed with this.

We got a nice room for the three of us. It basically was one big bed (again a wooden plank). It was warm that night. The next morning we were woken up by the Nepali men in the room next to us. They started talking at 4.20 am. The wall is made of some wooden planks with cracks in it (I could basically see them), so it was like someone was talking right next to us.

Day 3. From Jhyari to Rara Lake

Elevation: From 2800 meter to 3000 meter

Duration: 4 hours.

After a really good breakfast that consisted out of potato parutha and eggs, we headed to Rara. Both Jeffrey and I had pain in our muscles from the previous days. I didn’t have it this bad during our trek to Mount Everest Base Camp . Maybe the reason we had it more this time, is because we carried our own backpacks plus we had more steep climbs. Sometimes I even had to use my hands to climb up.

Like today, we had one very steep climb, as there was one high pass of approximately 3500 meter to get to Rara. While we were struggling to get up, local children were running up and rolling down the steepest hills with a wooden plank with wheels. Just crazy.

Once we were finally up there, we found a beautiful flat part with lots of trees. Then, we saw Rara Lake. It was really beautiful. I actually got tears in my eyes , but this was probably more because of my aching legs and ass . We took photos for about an hour, and then we had to continue to the other side of the lake to get to our hotel. It was still about an hour walk (it’s really a big lake), but luckily on flat land.

Our first day at Rara Lake

At the hotel we were the only foreigners, the other tourists were all from Nepal – mostly Kathmandu. Fortunately, the hotel had a room for us, even one with an own bathroom including a shower and a western toilet. Don’t expect any luxury though. The toilet didn’t flush, the shower was just a tap with cold water, and at night the room was freezing cold because of the thin walls.

After some relaxing and a short walk amongst a part of the lake, we bumped into the Dutch speaking Nepali guy again at the hotel. He invited us to join him and his friends in the dining room (which is more like a shed). There we had a nice conversation with him and we also met two other men that were shooting a movie at Rara. I asked for the name of the movie and they replied “Hitler”. Both Jeffrey and I chuckled. “Like the German dictator?” I asked. “No, no” – so we must’ve understood. However, we couldn’t make anything else out of it than Hitler, so we dropped the subject.

At night we were sitting at a campfire, as a random funny Nepali man had invited us to sit with him and his friends. He spoke English, but we barely understood what he said. He made lots of jokes, although we didn’t really know what they were about. Often he would start talking with his friends, clearly talking about us; pointing and laughing. He would then pat Jeffrey on the knees as if we knew exactly what they were laughing about.

After a while the producer of the movie came to sit with us as well. His english was perfect, because he had studied one year in the USA. The now drunk Nepali man insisted that we should play in the movie too, that we would make excellent head characters. The producer said that he could do that, most definitely to drop the subject.

Now that the producer was sitting with us, and because his English was so well, we asked about the movie again. He told us that it’s a love story , with a girl who has an evil sister. Since she is so evil, they called the movie Hitler. Yes, like the German Dictator.

Day 4. Rara Lake to Talcha

Elevation: From 3000 meter to 3500 meter (and back).

Duration: 5 hours in total.

Even though we were a bit tired from the previous days, we decided to wake up early for the sunrise over the lake. The sun was actually so bright, that it was a bit hard to enjoy it. After sitting on a perfectly located bench for a little while, and after being blinded by the sun, we headed back to our hotel for breakfast.

After waiting way to long for our breakfast, we went for a hike up to have a better view of the lake. We were both a bit done with hiking, even though it was without our heavy backpacks this time. Luckily, we had some great views of the lake and also of the mountains on the other side. Because we were too lazy, we didn’t go all the way to the top (3700 meter) but stopped at about 3500 meter.

We decided not to spent the night at Rara Lake again, because the next day we had to arrange a jeep back to Jumla from the bus stop. The reason we didn’t want to walk back to Jumla was mostly because it would still take us six days to get back to Bardia (where we left a bunch of our stuff). Furthermore, my shoes were starting to show that I had bought them for only 40 $ USD in Kathmandu, as the soles were letting go.

Talcha is a close by village where there is an airport, busstop and here you can also find jeeps. The walk to Talcha was an easy 3 hour walk all along the lake. In Talcha we quickly found a guesthouse. We tried to arrange a jeep back from there, but it was not possible. So the next day we had to go down by bus. We would go until Nagma, and try to fix a jeep from there for the rest of our drive down.

So I thought the way up to Jumla is scary, but that road is perfect if you compare it with the highway that continues to Rara Lake. So, if you actually want to die , join a bus ride in Talcha, sit and enjoy the horror show – with amazing views though.

Imagine beautiful mountains, a perfect valley with a rough flowing river. Now imagine you are on one of those beautiful mountains, approximately 3000 meters high in a bus . Every second of the bus ride is bumpy, there is not a second that the road is smooth. The road is narrow, but still it’s a two-way road . Every minute or every few second the bus has to turn, sometimes honks while doing so to warn possible vehicles coming from the opposite direction, sometimes the driver doesn’t even bother. You look next to you, through the window, and you can see the steep cliff down. There is barely any space left. You look at the bus driver, and see he is actually making a phone call while driving.

The bus ride took us about nine hours. First, it was… okay I guess. Yes, of course it was scary, but after the first hour, you kinda get used to it. Then, it turned dark outside and the only thing I could do was visualizing the most horrible bus accident on earth.

Once we arrived in Nagma we were very happy to be able to arrange a jeep to take us further down the next day. It was still a jeep ride of 12 hours, but it felt so safe compared to the bus ride the previous day!

We are very happy to made it back alive. Yes, it was all worth it. But, if you are planning to go to Rara Lake, please don’t use the bus.

Day 1: pick up from the airport and transfer to your hotel (1,300 m/4,264 ft) for the night..

Our representative will greet you with a warm welcome when you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport. After a short trip from the airport, you’ll arrive at the hotel in the center of Kathmandu. You may relax when the procedure of checking is completed.

After recharging your batteries, you must attend a brief orientation class at our corporate headquarters. Our guide will give you an overview of the forthcoming tour in this short presentation. You may spend the rest of your day exploring the area, eating traditional Nepalese food, and learning about Nepalese culture. Kathmandu is where you will spend the night.

Day 2: Kathmandu sightseeing excursion for half a day. Accommodation in a hotel.

After breakfast on this day, you’ll go on a half-day sightseeing trip to Kathmandu Valley. You’ll see several historical sites that have been designated as World Heritage Sites. Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambhunath, Boudhanath Stupa, and Kathmandu Durbar Square are the highlights of the day. You can shop and prepare for the trip in the evening. Stay in Kathmandu for the night.

Day 03: Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj at a height of 150 meters (490 feet). Accommodation in a hotel for 1 hour.

On this day of the Rara Lake trek, you’ll fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj for an hour’s picturesque trip. Nepalgunj is a prominent transportation and industrial center in the Banke area of far western Nepal. You’ll have plenty of time today to see Nepal’s multi-ethnic capital. You’ll get a close look at the Terai people’s distinct culture and way of life, which is significantly different from that of residents in the capital city.

You may either go to Grasscutters’ Lane or eat some street cuisine. You may also go to Royal Bardia National Park, which is only a few hours away from Nepalgunj’s main market. Elephant safaris and animal encounters are available here. Stay the night at Nepalgunj.

Day 4: Fly 20 minutes from Nepalgunj to Jumla (2,540 m/8,334 ft) and stay at a Tea House.

After breakfast, you’ll board a flight from Nepalgunj to Jumla on this day. You’ll arrive at Jumla at a height of 2,540 meters after a 20-minute flight. As you travel from the plains of Terai to the mountainous scenery of Jumla today, you’ll notice a dramatic shift in the landscape.

Jumla is located in Nepal’s Karnali area, which is isolated and underdeveloped. It is the administrative center for the Jumla districts. For the goal of acclimatization, you’ll spend a whole day exploring this unexplored location. Stay the night at Jumla.

Day 05: Trek from Jumla to Chere Chaur (3055 m/10,023 ft) and stay in a tea house.

Your Rara Lake Trek officially begins on this day. You’ll begin your hike from Jumla to Chere Chaur after breakfast (3,055 meters). Because it is the first day of the hike, you should take it gently and drink lots of water. You’ll pass through Khalanga Bazaar, a tiny marketplace, on your journey to Chere Chaur. You’ll arrive at Chere Chaur for an overnight stay after going through various tiny towns and temples.

Day 06: Chere Chaur to Chalachaur (2980 m/9,777 ft) on Tea House Accommodation 5-6 hours.trek

On the 6th day of your Rara Lake Trek, you’ll continue the western paths to Jaljala Pass, where you’ll steadily rise through spectacular rhododendron, birch, and pine woods (3,580 meters). The Kanjiroba Himal is visible from Jaljala Pass. You’ll pass via this pass and continue your journey on a beautiful trail. After a few hours, you’ll arrive at Jaljala Chaur, a summer grazing pasture. After 5-6 hours of walking, you’ll reach Chala Chaur (2,980 meters) for an overnight stay on the main Rara Circuit track.

Day 07: Chalachaur to Sinja Valley Tea House Accommodation (2490 m/8167 ft).

On this day, you’ll go to Sinja Valley, a little settlement on the banks of the Hima River. The path passes through several minor towns. The Jaljala River will accompany you on your journey. Finally, after a 4-5-hour hike, you’ll arrive at Sinja Valley (2,490 meters), where you’ll spend the night. From the 12th through the 14th century, this lovely valley served as the capital of the Malla Dynasty. As a result, the Sinja Valley provides trekkers with various old temples and sites to explore.

Day 08: Sinja to Ghorosingha Tea House Accommodation (3050 m/10007 ft).

You’ll have an early morning breakfast and depart Sinja for Ghorosingha on this day. You’ll reach Laha by following the upstream route east. The Rara Lake trek continues from Laha to Gani, a tiny town. You’ll reach Ghorosingha (3,050 meters) for an overnight stay if you continue on the difficult trek.

Day 09: Ghorosingha to Rara Lake (3010 m/9876 ft) on Tea House Accommodation for 6-7 hours.

After breakfast, you’ll make your way to Rara Lake (3,010 meters) through a difficult climb along the side of Chucharmare Danda. You’ll enjoy spectacular Himalayan views from the top of the hill, with gorgeous deep blue tranquil Rara Lake surrounded by green hills. You’ll now enter a woodland route and continue your trip till you reach Majhghat while taking in the beautiful landscape.

After crossing Majhghat, follow the Khatyar River to Chhapri hamlet, which is also the Rara National Park’s headquarters. Finally, after a 6-7-hour hike, you’ll arrive at Rara Lake, your ideal destination. Upon arrival, you may enjoy a close-up view of Rara National Park’s peaceful lake and beautiful foliage.

Day 10: Explore Rara Lake to take in the beauty of the lake and its surroundings, connect with the locals, and learn more about their culture and ethnicity. Accommodation in a Tea House

You’ll spend the entire day visiting Rara Lake and its surroundings on this day. After breakfast, you’ll go to one of Nepal’s largest lakes to explore it. It is bordered by deep green forests that are home to a broad range of flora and wildlife, including some indigenous birds, fish, and animal species. If you’re looking for a long day excursion, Murma Top provides a breathtaking view of the lake from above. It will take around 6-7 hours to go there and return. You may also enjoy the amazing view of the lake and the Himalayas if you merely wish to linger on the lake’s shore.

The shifting light of the lake’s colors, which undergoes a beautiful transition, will undoubtedly provide you with a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Aside from that, on a clear day, you may go on short boating trips, however, swimming is prohibited to avoid contaminating the crystal blue water. After taking in the breathtaking sights and photographing them with your camera, you’ll go to the teahouse for an overnight stay.

Day 11: Rara Lake to Pina (2440 m/8006 ft) on Tea House Accommodation for 4-5 hours.

On this day, you’ll journey towards Pina, leaving behind the magnificent, clean Rara Lake. The hike today will take around 4-5 hours and will be pretty nice until you reach Gamgadhi, the Mugu District’s headquarters. You’ll continue to Jhyari Khola through a lovely wooded track. After that, small uphill treks through the pine forest will lead you to Pina (2,440 meters). Overnight stay in Pina village’s teahouse.

Day 12: Pina to Bumra (2850 m/9351 ft) on Tea House Accommodation for 5-6 hours.

You’ll depart Pina for Bumra after breakfast on this day. The path goes down and leads to Ghurchi Langna Pass, which is 3,480 meters above sea level. This is the trek’s highest point. Colorful prayer flags may be seen, and the magnificent Karnali River can be seen from the top of the pass.

You’ll continue your Rara Lake trek down to Bulbule after taking in the vista. You’ll go south from Bulbule, passing through Chautha and the little settlements there. After a 5- to 6-hour hike, you’ll arrive in a lovely Burmese village (2,850 meters) for an overnight stay. Nauri Ghat is another name for this settlement.

Day 13: Bumra to Jumla (2540 m/8334 ft): Bumra to Jumla (2540 m/8334 ft): Bumra to Jumla (2540 m/83 Tea House Accommodation for 5-6 hours.

You’ll begin your walk from Bumra village early in the morning on the day of your Rara Lake Trek. You’ll cross two suspension bridges across the Hima River on the final day of your Rara Lake Trekking. You’ll arrive at a hot spring after a couple of hours of downhill walking. You may calm your body by taking a bath here. You’ll cross the Danphe Lagna pass at 3,691 meters after spending some time in the hot spring. You’ll keep walking till you reach Chere Chaur. You’ll go back on the same route you walked a few days ago from this settlement. Finally, after a 5- to 6-hour hike, you’ll arrive in Jumla (2,540 meters), where you’ll spend the night.

Day 14: Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj.

You’ll travel back to Nepalgunj from Jumla on this day, early in the morning. After arriving in Nepalgunj, you’ll take a flight back to Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital. You will be transferred to the appropriate hotel upon arrival at the International Airport. In the evening, take a stroll around Thamel, a popular tourist destination nearby. Here you may celebrate your accomplishment of completing the Rara Lake Trek. You can also go shopping at the last minute. In Kathmandu, spend the night.

Day 15: Departure Day

Our representative will drop you off at Tribhuvan International Airport around 3 hours before your flight’s planned departure time. You will wave a final goodbye with your beautiful Rara Lake Trek memories to your home country or next destination.

Permits and Fees for Rara Lake Trek

Foreign visitors to Rara National Park must pay a charge of 3,000 NPR plus 13% VAT, totaling 3,390 NPR (about $34).
For SAARC nationals, the entrance cost to Rara National Park is 1,500 NPR.
