Here’s how to overcome your public speaking anxiety and give a knockout best man speech that will incite laughter, smiles, or even sentimental tears.
Quick Answer: How to Write a Best Man Speech Fast (with Template!)
A killer best man toast has a formula:
- Start with a funny or complimentary introduction
- Lead into a short story
- Add a bit of vulnerability
- End with genuine congratulations to the bride and groom.
A great speech can take just 15-20 minutes of planning and note-making to save you (and the bride & groom) the embarrassment of an excessively long or inappropriate ramble.
If you want to write a best man speech fast, follow this brief template for a great toast. Your toast should be roughly 3 to 5 minutes long. You can use numbered index cards to help you remember. Then, rehearse a few times in the mirror in the days leading up to the event.
The most straightforward speech outline includes seven main components (feel free to write down your own speech as you go!):
- A great one-liner : This could be a funny joke, a compliment, or an inspirational quote about brotherhood or marriage. Brownie points if it’s unique/personal. The first 15 seconds of the toast should capture the audience’s attention and leave them excited for more. Something like this:
“I’d like to begin by congratulating the groom for his superb taste in choosing the best man [chuckle].”
- Compliment the wedding : Time to ground yourself and show respect with the guests by highlighting things you like about the wedding. For example, you can compliment the beauty of the venue, the delicious food, or the great choice of music. Modify this:
“All jokes aside, this is a beautiful wedding. The bride and groom look like a movie star couple together. And if you didn’t taste the cake, you are missing out!”
- Express gratitude : Say “thank you” to those who made the wedding possible and show appreciation to the groom for choosing you as his best man. Modify this:
“I am so grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Zimerman for hosting us here today, and thank you to the bride and groom for inviting me to be part of their special day.”
- Tell a story : Did you and the groom meet as kids on the baseball field? Were you there when he first met his bride? Did you share a funny experience in college that is appropriate to share? The “meat” of the speech will be a short story about your relationship with the groom. A great story could be something like this:
“When I first met Jeff, he was in a period of transition in life, like we all go through. He had just started a new job at my office in San Francisco, and we met because of our mutual addiction to double shot espressos (iced with a little cream) at 6 AM every morning from the corner coffee shop Bob’s Cup O’ Joe. When we both arrived at the office at the same time, 3 days in a row with eyes like this [widen eyes big], I knew we would be friends for life. A million espressos, meetings, and after-work beers later, I am so proud to call Jeff my best friend. When he told me about meeting a beautiful blonde named Anne at Bob’s Cup O’ Joe a few years later, I knew something would become of it. She even drank the same double shot espressos, iced with a little cream!”
- Admire the couple : Strengthen your bond with the newlyweds by expressing your support for their marriage. If you know a bit about the bride and groom’s relationship, list a few things you admire about their bond. You may emphasize how the bride has positively impacted the groom’s life or how they make a great team.
“Jeff and Anne are a perfect pair, and it seriously warms my heart to see a couple so amazingly in love. They compliment each other in every way and radiate joy when they are together.”
- Summarize your thoughts : Before you wrap up your speech, go back and highlight your key ideas. You can pre-write 2-3 crisp sentences summarizing your support of the couple’s marriage. Modify this:
“I wish I could say I predicted this day would come, but Jeff’s incredible character and charm won Anne over. I am so grateful to be friends with both of them and to join you all in this celebration.”
- Toast to the future : At the end of your speech, raise your glass for a toast to the couple’s love. Modify this:
“Please join me in raising our glasses to a lifetime of happiness and espressos for Jeff and Anne Allison!”
Here is an awesome example of a short and sweet 4-minute toast that left the crowd cracking up:
It’s best to memorize your speech, but there is no shame in bringing a few index cards in your pocket to reference if you get nervous. Don’t forget to prepare and rehearse in advance.

What to Say in a Best Man Speech (Do’s and Don’ts)
A best man’s speech traditionally takes place at the wedding reception after the maid of honor gives her speech. The best man’s speech should be positive, respectful, and congratulatory. It can last 3 to 5 minutes and should focus on a central theme or story about the groom.
Remember, a best man speech is not the time to “wing it.” If you do that, there may come the point when everything suddenly goes silent, and a crowd of 50-100+ people is staring at you, waiting for what you’re going to say about the groom. You probably don’t want to end up with a cringing audience while telling a story about the groom’s previous relationships:
Instead, remember these key best man speech tips for a successful toast:
Pre-plan your speech with a layout and index cards | Don’t wing it or try to go on the fly |
Keep your speech 3-5 minutes long | Don’t give an excessively short or long speech |
Open with a catchy one-liner or joke | Don’t start with a dull or droning tone |
Tell a short story about the groom | Don’t make it about you |
Use fun, family-friendly humor | Avoid risky or inappropriate topics and jokes |
Use deep breathing to calm your nerves before the speech | Don’t drink too much |
Congratulate the groom | Don’t ignore the bride |
Compliment the bride | Insult or tease the bride (I know it may be tempting, but it NEVER goes over well) |
Read the room and get to know the guests | Don’t use profanity (unless it’s acceptable in the family) |
Here are a few examples of what you should say in a best man speech:
- How did you meet the groom?
- What is one of your favorite memories with him?
- How did the groom meet the bride? Were you there?
- What is special about the groom?
- What do you like most about him?
- What are his positive traits?
Playful banter : You don’t want to be too corny and cheesy with your bro. Depending on your relationship with the groom and the culture of the wedding, you may want to throw in a little banter with your dude. For example, you might make a funny joke about how much the groom loves going out to eat:
You should also avoid some key topics in a best man speech (more on what to avoid later).
Do not mention:
- The groom’s past relationships
- Sexual jokes
- Drugs, alcohol, or past mistakes
- Insecurities of the groom
- Financial or personal information
- Insults to the bride or the wedding guests
- Overly embarrassing stories
- Teasing the bride
- Anything that could potentially harm your friendship
Keep things positive and lighthearted. While a little witty banter or playful teasing can be fun (depending on your relationship with the groom), you should avoid insulting him or highlighting any major insecurities. The “playful” part of the speech is an excellent fun icebreaker, but it shouldn’t hurt anyone’s feelings or make them feel publicly embarrassed in front of their wedding guests.
8 Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Even with the best intentions, it’s easy to stumble into some common pitfalls when giving a best man speech. But don’t worry, I’ve got your back! Let’s dive into some frequent faux pas and how to sidestep them like a pro.
Open mic night
Remember, you’re not auditioning for a stand-up comedy gig. While humor is great, trying too hard to be funny can lead to crickets… or worse, uncomfortable silence.
How to avoid it:
- Aim for a balance of humor and sincerity
- Test your jokes on a friend or family member beforehand. This part is key!
- Remember, it’s okay if not every line gets a laugh
Roasting, and roasting, and roasting…
Sure, you’ve got dirt on the groom. But his wedding day isn’t the time to air all his dirty laundry.
- Keep stories lighthearted and positive
- Avoid mentioning exes or embarrassing moments
- When in doubt, ask yourself: “Would Grandma approve?”
Rambling rambo
Nothing makes guests check their watches more than a speech that just. Won’t. End.
- Stick to your planned 3-5 minute timeframe
- Practice with a timer
- If you see eyes glazing over, wrap it up
Me, myself, and I
Remember, this speech is about the happy couple, not your life story.
- Focus on stories that involve the groom (and ideally, the bride too)
- Limit personal anecdotes to those relevant to the couple’s relationship
- Use “you” and “we” more than “I” and “me”
Too much liquid courage
A drink might calm your nerves, but too many can turn your speech into a disaster.
- Limit yourself to one drink before the speech
- Hydrate with water
- Save the real celebrating for after your speech
Inside jokes
That hilarious moment you shared might have the groom in stitches, but if no one else gets it, you’ll lose your audience.
- Explain the context of inside jokes
- Choose stories that have universal appeal
- Read the room – if people look confused, move on
Just wingin’ it, bro
Spontaneity is great for improv comedy, not so much for wedding speeches.
- Plan and write your speech in advance
- Practice, practice, practice
- Bring notes or index cards as a backup
Tech failure
Relying too heavily on technology can backfire spectacularly, even if it’s the latest Apple or Microsoft tech.
- If using slides or videos, have a backup plan
- Test any tech elements beforehand
- Be prepared to deliver your speech without aids if necessary
Remember, the goal is to celebrate the couple and their love. Keep that in mind, and you’ll knock it out of the park!
Pro Tip: After writing your speech, run through this checklist to make sure you’ve avoided these common pitfalls.
How to Write a Best Man Speech for Best Friend or Brother: Step-by-Step
If you’re ready to prepare something more in-depth than the quick ideas above, this step-by-step guide can help you write a thoughtful speech that the groom may remember forever. After all, being named the best man at your friend or brother’s wedding is a tremendous honor. But like any honor, it comes with some responsibilities. After you finish all your bachelor party and wedding duties, an epic best man speech can be like the fireworks at the show’s end.
Here are 5 simple steps to make it count:
Start with a theme
Before you start writing and rehearsing your speech, it helps to decide on a theme for your talk. This will give a nice flow to the speech. A theme ensures that you stay on track to communicate your congratulations and appreciation to the groom.
What is the main message you want to get across? A few theme ideas include:
- Family Anecdotes : Best man toasts center around storytelling. This theme is the easiest way to stay on track because you are telling a simple story from beginning to end. Since you are a close friend or family member share anecdotes no one else would be able to share. Consider using pictures from childhood with a slideshow.
- Humor : Whether you’re naturally funny or working on your jokes , your speech is the perfect opportunity to get the audience laughing. Best man speeches are known for getting a little saucy, but you must be careful about offending the crowd or making crude jokes that might insult the bride and groom. If you want to tease the groom with some witty banter, it helps to make fun of yourself or reference an appropriate inside joke.
- Inspirational : Have you and the groom achieved an important business goal or accomplishment together? Do you have a shared role model or favorite motivational book you both read in college? This speech theme can leave the audience feeling inspired.
- Morality : Use your speech to highlight the great person the groom is. Perhaps you give examples of his integrity, trustworthiness, or generosity. You can emphasize how lucky you are to know the groom and how glad you are that he found a woman to spend his life with.
- Sentimentality : When humor and storytelling aren’t your fortes, it doesn’t hurt to get a little corny. Sentimental speeches require a level of emotional vulnerability, but they can leave a huge impact on the newlyweds and their attendees. Here is an excellent example of a sentimental-themed speech where the groom’s big brother brings him to tears with a story about their father’s last words:
Create an outline
You wouldn’t go on a road trip without a navigation system, so don’t go into your speech without a plan. The best toasts and speeches follow the same structure. Pull out a piece of paper and brainstorm some ideas using this format, then use the following steps to fill in the details:
- Hook/Opening statement : The opening statement should be a 1 to 3-line description about the groom. The first 7 seconds of the speech should hook the audience immediately. It warms them up to you and makes them want to pay attention to the amusing stories. You’ll find an abundance of opening-line ideas in the next section.
- Background context : Now comes the why of your speech. This is where the context of your relationship with the groom comes in. You can throw in some funny jokes and a few details about your experience with him. Use this intro to build up the anticipation for the story to come. Write down a few ideas of stories you can tell.
- Tell the story : Choose 1-3 short stories about the groom that is funny, slightly embarrassing, or interesting. Jot down a few of the sensory elements you want to reference, like the smelly locker room or the squeaking of tire wheels. Most stories follow a bell-curve pattern—they start with an intro, lead to rising action, peak with a capstone moment, then tie back to the beginning. Keep this in mind as you brainstorm and follow the story-planning steps below.
- Take-home message : After you get a good laugh or “awww” out of the audience, you’ll want to bring the story back to the beginning. What do you want them to remember about your speech and friendship with the groom?
- Thank the wedding party : Use a quick sentence to thank the wedding party and hosts. Express your genuine gratitude for being invited.
- Closing toast and congratulations : After wrapping up the story and thanking the wedding party, you should invite the audience to toast the bride and groom with you. For an extra cheery finale, act as if you are speaking on their behalf and include lots of well-wishes for the newlyweds.
Pro Tip : Before filling in your outline details, watch this video for an overview of how to give a memorable toast. Human behavior expert Vanessa Van Edwards explains the most common mistakes (don’t start with “I,” “me,” or “my”) and a few secrets to getting the audience to perk up in their seats.
Opening line ideas for your best man speech
Once you have your outline, it’s time to dig into the details. People decide their first impression of you within 7 seconds, so it’s extra important to nail the opening line of your speech. Best men use this opportunity to crack a joke, compliment the wedding, or set a sentimental tone for the speech.
Avoid making the first lines about you. No “me”, “I”, or “my”. Instead, start with a juicy or mysterious line about the groom, for example:
I was the groom’s roommate in college. | Ben was the self-proclaimed organization king in college. As his roommate, I feared leaving a pen on the desk. |
I am the groom’s younger brother. | As a kid, the groom was so excited to have a younger brother that he quickly crowned me as his servant for the next 10 years. |
My favorite thing about the groom is his… | Tonight you’ll learn why the groom was always… |
My favorite story about the groom was… | The best story I have about the groom starts with a greasy cheeseburger and a speeding ticket. |
If you need a little inspiration, here are some hilarious and quirky best man speech opening lines:
- “Caring, loyal, honest, good-looking, and an all-around-great guy… OK, enough about me, onto the groom…!”
- “This is the perfect chance to tell you about [Groom] and how talented, special, smart, good-looking, and… sorry, man, I can’t read your handwriting here.”
- “I’d like to give a toast to the bride and groom.” [pull a piece of toasted bread from your pocket and give it to them]
- “[Groom’s name] is the kind of person you call when you lock yourself out of the dorm bathroom without any clothes on.”
- “The bride and groom asked me not to share embarrassing stories or crude jokes during my speech… so that’s it from me! Thanks for listening, everyone.”
- “I’d like to start by congratulating the groom for his excellent taste in choosing the best man.”
- “[Groom] had a tough time choosing his best man. First, he called his most handsome friend, but he said no. Then, he called his smartest friend, and he said no. Then, he called his most successful friend, who also said no. Then he called me, and I said, ‘Bro, I can’t say no to you four times.'”
- “What can I say about [Groom]? I guess I’ll start at the very beginning. He was born on [groom’s birthday]. Our parents were hoping for a girl, but I’ve always said… close enough.”
Here is a genuinely funny opening line from a best brother wedding speech:
Pro Tip : Don’t forget to pause for laughter. If it doesn’t come, you can chuckle at yourself and cue the audience that they are supposed to laugh by saying, “This is where you are supposed to laugh,” or joking, “Sound guy, can you please cue the laugh track?” Then, keep going with your speech.
Don’t worry. You need not be a jokester to give a great opening line. If you want to go the nostalgic or tearjerker route, be sure it is highly personalized and thoughtful. Here are some sentimental opening line ideas:
- “There are friends, and there is family, but friends also become family. This is so true for [Groom] and me. We’ve been best friends since we were X years old, and I’ve always considered him my brother.”
- “There’s an old Irish proverb that says a good friend is like a four-leaf clover—hard to find and lucky to have. I think that’s true. Good friends are hard to find, and I’m lucky to have called [Groom] my best friend for the last X years.”
- “I’ve heard that the best relationships come from the foundation of a deep friendship. Experts say that laughter, mutual respect, and enjoying each other’s company are the ingredients for a long-lasting, joyful marriage. After knowing [Groom] and [Bride] for X years, there is no doubt in my mind that they will make a great pair.”
- “In Good Will Hunting , Robin Williams said, ‘It doesn’t matter if the guy is perfect or the girl is perfect as long as they are perfect for each other.” Anyone who has seen [Groom] and [Bride] together can agree that this is true for them. I haven’t seen a perfect pair, and I’m happy to be part of this celebration of their love.”
To learn more about the best speech openers, use this guide on How to Start a Speech: The Best (and Worst) Speech Openers . Some top tips include:
- Avoid starting with a lackluster nicety like “thanks for having me.”
- Don’t mention your nervousness.
- Avoid mentioning technical difficulties like the microphone or saying, “Can you hear me?”
Background context
Now that you’ve grabbed the audience’s attention, it’s time to give them a little background on why you are giving a speech in the first place. This is another sneak peek at some details you’ll cover in the speech.
The whole point of this part is to tell them how you know the groom—but it isn’t about you. You’ll often hear wedding speeches that start with a drab, “I met the groom in college” or, “My name is ___, and I’m the best man.” You can do better than that! Try saying:
- “The groom was the first friend I made on the high school football team. I had no idea we would become roommates in a bachelor pad throughout college.”
- “As little kids, the groom and I were known to be a dangerous duo in the neighborhood. He always carried the eggs and toilet paper, then instructed me where to throw them. But you can guess who always took the blame for his antics….”
- “The groom and I have been friends and business partners for X years, and as you’ll hear shortly, he is the main reason I broke my arm during the last office basketball game. But first, I want to tell you a less embarrassing story….”
Pro Tip : Focus on the groom, and don’t make it about you. One of the biggest mistakes people make during wedding speeches is talking too much about themselves. Your speech shouldn’t discuss where you’re from, what you think, or how you ended up at the party. The best man’s speech is a time to focus on the groom and his bride.
Tell the story
After your punchy opening line and background info, it’s time to tell the perfect story about the groom. Depending on the length of your speech and the details of your story, some best man speeches cover 1 to 3 short stories.
Reference back to the memories you wrote when brainstorming. Pick a story that includes the most of these captivating elements:
- A little bit of embarrassment : Whether it’s you, the groom, or a mutual friend, it helps to poke some fun at someone in the story. If you fear being offensive, the best person to joke about is yourself.
- Audience member references : You can get major bonus points if you bring wedding guests into the storytelling moment. You might say, “Mom, you might want to close your ears on this one!” or, “Brian, we’re talking about you!”
- Sensory details : What did the scenery look like? What were the prominent smells, sounds, and tastes at the moment? A great story should make the audience feel like they were with you. Don’t forget to mention the frigid cold lake you jumped into or the outrageously spicy food that left you both panting and crying for water.
- A final punch line : Ideally, the best story ends with a shocking moment or funny line. It should leave the audience laughing, crying, surprised, or even gasping. For example, in an epic adventure story about you and the groom on a hunting trip, you may end with, “Just as the shark was about to bite the line, Joe reeled in the massive bluefin and yelled, ‘I think we’re gonna need a bigger boat!’”
Pro Tip : If you have to ask, “Is this appropriate?” it probably isn’t. Some stories are better for late-night beers than they are for weddings. Avoid telling stories related to sexual topics, drugs, alcohol, illegal activities, or anything you wouldn’t want grandma to hear.
Take-home message
When the story finishes, you’ve hopefully elicited some laughter or maybe some tears. All jokes aside, there is a reason you were the best man, and you are probably a significant person to the groom. This is a great time to emphasize the best qualities of the groom and why you’re so happy for his new love.
Here is an excellent example of tying together the opening and closing lines with a heartfelt message about finding the perfect soul mate:
End your speech with a heartfelt toast
We’ve all heard “let’s raise a glass to [Bride] and [Groom]” before. You can do better than that! The final toast is like the fireworks at the end of your best man speech. Instead of something mediocre, invite the audience to join you in a genuine, thoughtful congratulations. Examples include:
- “Please join me in raising our glasses to the beautiful bride and handsome groom. May your lives together be long, healthy, and happy. We love you so much and are excited for you. Cheers!”
- “Lift your glasses to thank Mr. and Mrs. [Bride’s Parents] for hosting this beautiful wedding. Let us all toast to the perfect union of the bride and groom. We wish you a bright and beautiful future. Cheers!”
- “Here’s to the past, for all you’ve learned. Here’s to the present for this beautiful moment we all share. Here’s to the future for all you’ve got to look forward to. Cheers to the happy couple!”
Pro Tip : Make your toast inclusive and communal, so the audience feels like they’re cheering for the couple with you. Use words like “we”, “lets”, and “us”. This congratulation invites them to join as if you are speaking on their behalf.
Use a best man speech template
A template makes things simple if you’re still feeling uneasy about writing your best man speech. You can take the structure of an example speech and incorporate your ideas and stories to make it your own.
Best man speech example for a best friend :
“Tonight, you’ll learn why the groom was destined to marry [Bride]. The year was 2002, and we were all in a bar with friends on New Year’s Eve in New York City. Snow was falling outside, and we were sipping champagne, waiting for the big ball to drop. Seemingly out of nowhere, a woman with a red dress entered the room, and everything seemed to stop. All the bachelors in our group were captivated, but only [Groom] had the guts to walk up to her. Rumor has it that his first opening line was ‘
Everyone talks about a woman’s glow when she’s falling in love, but I swear that [Groom] was smiling from ear to ear from the second they met. We could hardly get him to stop talking about her by the following week. We’d be watching football and drinking beers only to have [Bride’s] name brought up every 5 minutes.
Fast forward 3 years, and we’ve all seen how much [Bride] has positively impacted his life. When he came to me to tell me he was proposing, my only response was, ‘ Finally, dude !’
There’s something extra special about these two. They go together like peanut butter and jelly. They love and respect each other so much. [Bride] was the one for [Groom] from the second they locked eyes in that hazy NYC bar. We are all so happy to be here for your big day. Let’s raise our glasses to the beautiful bride and groom! Cheers!”
Another Best man speech example for a best friend :
“The groom was the first friend I made on the high school basketball team. He wasn’t very good [pause for laughter]. I was the tallest player and obviously had the best free throw, but I was majorly lacking in the ladies department. Thankfully, [Groom] took me under his wing and showed me how to be a true gentleman. That includes opening doors for women and carrying their bags instead of just running in with my own. What would I have done without you, man?
Even though he was no good at basketball, [Groom] always had his head on his shoulders. He’s a respectful, intelligent, and relatively clean-cut guy. All joking aside, it’s no surprise that he ended up with a woman as intelligent and beautiful as [Bride]. You both deserve a lifetime of love, happiness, and success together. Please raise your glasses and join me in congratulating the bride and groom! We love you!”
Practice your body language
Public speaking isn’t only about what you say but how you carry yourself. Your body language can drastically affect your confidence, your delivery, and how the audience perceives you. Use these body language hacks to take your speech to the next level:
- Signal “friend” : Smile and show your open palms to send the message that you are the audience’s friend. This makes people feel more comfortable with your presence and more likely to listen.
- Stand up straight : When you look confident, you also feel more confident. Check your posture if your voice is a little shaky before the speech. Roll back your shoulders and tuck your shoulder blades down towards your back. Slightly lift your chest and chin as you speak.
- Make eye contact: Throughout the speech, you should change your eye contact with different audience members. As you mention specific compliments or thanks, make eye contact with the bride, groom, groomsmen, bridesmaids, and the bride’s father.
- Genuinely smile : Smiling may seem obvious, but it’s easy to forget when you feel so focused on a perfect delivery. At the same time, you don’t want to look like you’re fake smiling throughout the speech. Use these 9 Simple Tips to Smile Better (in any situation!)
- Use your hands : It’s easy to let your nerves get the best of you and feel like a “deer in the headlights.” Instead of tucking your hands in your pockets, widen your stance and take up space. Use your hands and gestures while you talk to show that you are comfortable and happy during the speech.

Rehearse before the big day
Experts say you should rehearse a speech 10 times before performing it. Research also shows that people who mentally prepare themselves before a speech by imagining it going well are more likely to perform fluently and easily. So before you get in front of an audience, be sure you’ve gone over your speech at least 10 times, either in your head or out loud. Better yet, practice in the mirror, on camera, or in front of a trusted friend.
It also helps to review the gist of the speech with the groom (without giving away any secret details) to make sure it’s alright with him. A few weeks before the wedding, you may pull him aside and ask, “Hey man, is it OK if I tell the story about ____ in my best man speech? I think it’ll get some good laughs.”
Although this example is long, this best man very clearly rehearsed his speech for a near-perfect performance without any notes:
10 Expert Tips for Delivering a Killer Best Man Speech
Want to go beyond the ordinary? With just some tricks of the trade, you can keep the audience engaged and the laughs coming in the best speech you’ll ever write. Check these tips out!
Use the “Rule of Three”
Comedians and public speakers often use the “rule of three” because our brains are wired to remember things in threes.
Action Step: Structure your main points or jokes in groups of three. For example: “John is smart, kind, and only slightly obsessed with his cats.”
Use contrast to spark interest
Contrast creates interest and can make your points more impactful.
Action Step: Set up a contrast in your speech. For instance: “While most of us were struggling to figure out how to do laundry in college, Jacob was already starting his first business.”
Incorporate a callback
A callback refers to mentioning something from earlier in your speech, bringing it full circle.
Action Step: Plant a funny anecdote or phrase early in your speech, then reference it again at the end for a satisfying conclusion. For example:
Opening of the Speech:
“Hi everyone, I’m Mike, Jeff’s best man. Jeff always said he’d only get married if he found someone who could put up with his terrible singing in the shower. Well, today he found her!”
End of the Speech:
“Jeff, you found someone who loves you, even with your singing. Let’s raise a glass to Jeff and Anne. Cheers!”
Use the “Vowel Method” for Improvising
If you blank out, remember the vowels: A, E, I, O, U.
- A: And another thing…
- E: Excuse me, I just remembered…
- I: I just noticed…
- O: Oh, I almost forgot…
- U: Unbelievable, I can’t believe I didn’t mention…
Action Step: Practice using these phrases to smoothly transition if you lose your place.
Engage the senses
Help your audience visualize your stories by engaging their senses.
Action Step: For each anecdote, include at least one sensory detail. “The smell of burnt popcorn filled our dorm room as Jordan attempted to ‘cook’ for the first time.”
Use the “Bookend Technique”
Start and end your speech with the same theme or phrase for a polished feel.
Action Step: If you start with a quote about friendship, end with the same quote, but add how it applies to the couple’s relationship.
The “Pause and Punch” method
Build anticipation for your punchlines by pausing before you deliver them.
Action Step: Practice inserting a brief pause before your key jokes or points. It’s like adding an ellipsis (…) in written text.
Use different voices
When telling stories, use different voices for different characters to make your speech more engaging.
Action Step: Practice imitating the groom’s voice or mannerisms for one short quote in your speech.
Hint at something early in your speech that you’ll fully reveal later.
Action Step: Mention a mysterious object or event at the beginning, then explain its significance towards the end of your speech. Example:
“Hello everyone, I’m Mike, Jeff’s best man. Before I get into it, let me just say one thing: there’s a reason I’m holding this old, worn-out baseball cap.”
Middle of the Speech:
“Jeff and I have been friends since we were kids, and this baseball cap has seen us through countless adventures—catching our first fish, sneaking into the movies, and even when Jeff met Anne at the park.”
“So, why am I holding this cap? It’s a symbol of all the great memories Jeff and I have shared, and now, it’s a symbol of the new memories he’ll make with Anne. Here’s to a lifetime of adventures for the two of you. Cheers!”
Use a “Question Hook”
Engage your audience by asking rhetorical questions.
Action Step : Start your speech with a thought-provoking question like, “What makes a perfect marriage? Well, after knowing John for 15 years, I think I’ve figured it out…”
Bonus: Handling Emotions
It’s totally normal to feel a wave of emotion during your speech (but if you’re not the crying type, feel free to skip this section!). After all, your best bud is getting married! But you don’t want to turn into a blubbering mess in front of everyone. Here’s how to keep it together:
- Practice the Trigger Parts: Identify the parts of your speech that are likely to make you emotional. Practice these sections extra hard so you can get through them smoothly.
- Pause and Breathe: If you feel yourself getting choked up, pause and take a deep breath. It’ll give you a moment to compose yourself and will come across as a thoughtful pause to the audience.
- Have a “Reset Phrase” Ready: Prepare a lighthearted phrase to use if you need to regain composure. Something like, “And this is why I don’t watch romantic comedies,” can lighten the mood and give you a moment to recover.
- Keep Water Handy: A sip of water can help if your throat tightens up from emotion. Plus, it gives you a natural pause in your speech.
- Tensing: If you feel tears coming, try tensing your toes or pressing your tongue to the roof of your mouth. These physical actions can help distract from the emotional response.
Pro Tip: If you do get emotional, don’t apologize. Simply acknowledge it with something like, “Well, I guess this is what happens when your best friend finds his soulmate,” and continue with your speech.
Key Takeaways: Express Gratitude and Sentimentality in 3-5 Minutes
Ultimately, a best man speech is an opportunity to make your best bro look good in front of all his friends and family. Your speech should demonstrate how much you value your brotherhood or friendship. At the same time, you can enjoy 5 minutes of wedding fame without making things all about you. A great toast can make you a memorable celebrity at the wedding and have people laughing at your
Before jumping up at the reception and speaking off the cuff, remember to:
- Outline and plan your speech ahead of time. Use notecards if needed.
- Focus on the groom and his bride. Don’t go on and on about yourself.
- Nail the opening line with a funny joke, quote, or teaser that leads into a great story.
- Avoid inappropriate or cringey topics that could embarrass the groom.
- Express gratitude to the groom and wedding hosts.

Writing a Best Man Speech: Outline and Guide (+3 Examples)
- by Marisa Jenkins
- January 24, 2024
Being chosen as a bridal party member —especially as a best man or maid of honor —is a big deal. You have been given the opportunity to support someone in such a momentous part of their life. Your role comes with plenty of responsibilities, including making a speech at the reception.
Having an outline for your speech as a best man can be really helpful when you start writing the draft. Here is a classic and timeless example of an outline:
- Self-introduction
- Short icebreaker ( optional )
- Stories about the groom
- Talk about the partner
- Talk about their relationship
- Well-wishes and advice
Below is a more detailed explanation of each part of a best man speech outline, followed by a step-by-step guide—with tips—for writing the speech itself. Some examples are also provided to help you in the process.
Best Man Speech Outline: Easy Template to Use
Greet everyone present (1–3 sentences).
Before anything else, make sure to greet the guests, bridal party, and vendors at the venue. Acknowledge their presence and the effort they put into being there on the newlyweds’ special day.
You can keep this part brief but upbeat to get your guests engaged and listening to your speech as a best man.
Example : Hey everyone! Thank you for making the time and effort to attend Ben and Stephanie’s wedding.
Introduce Yourself (1–2 Sentences)
At the reception, odds are most people—but not all—will know who you are. For everyone’s benefit, briefly introduce yourself and your relationship with the newlyweds.
Example : For those of you who don’t know me—first of all, how dare you? Kidding aside, my name is Ryan Drews, Mike’s best friend and life coach. We’ve known each other since high school.
(Optional) Short Icebreaker (1–3 Sentences)
If you feel like you still need to capture your guests’ attention, consider adding a short joke or anecdote before you get into the body of your best man speech. You can get a good laugh and set the tone for the rest of the speech.
Example : Honestly, I was a bit nervous about giving this speech. People said it should only be as long as Gavin’s attention span. So… I guess that’s all for my speech, goodnight!”
Personal Stories and Memories With the Groom (1–3 Paragraphs)
Share a personal story that showcases your relationship and closeness with the groom. It does not necessarily have to be relatable, but make sure the memory will highlight the groom’s personality and positive traits.
You can also talk about the groom’s growth and development over the years. How much has he changed? How has he changed? Shed light on the positive changes you have observed since he and his partner got together .
Example : [Compare the groom’s personality during high school and today. He might be more mature, patient, and mentally strong than before. If you have one, share a story that illustrates these changes.]
Talk About the Partner (1–2 Paragraphs)
Do not forget about the star of the night—the other newlywed. Talk about your first impressions, the day you were first introduced, and any striking memories you have with them.
Example : [Where did you meet each other for the first time? Did you have dinner somewhere? What did you think of her initially, and how did this impression change?]
Talk About the Newlyweds (1–2 Paragraphs)
Compliment the couple and talk about their relationship. Highlight their strengths, share how you think they complement each other, and tell them how they make you—and everyone around them—feel.
Example : You two are an example of how a healthy dose of annoying each other can actually go a long way in making a relationship better. But all jokes aside, you guys inspire everyone around you to be kinder to one another and themselves.
Conclusion: Well-Wishes and Advice (1–2 Paragraphs)
The last part of a best man speech’s outline can contain well-wishes, advice, or both. Share any wisdom you have regarding marriage, and tell them that you are praying for the best for their future.
Example : Always remember that marriage is a two-player game: both of you must put in the same amount of effort to keep the game going. Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Linnehan! May the future be bright and boundless for you.
Writing a Best Man Speech: Steps and Tips to Follow
Step 1: Gather Material by Reflecting
Take a trip down memory lane and think about your relationship with the groom over the years. Write down any funny stories, milestones, and incidents that come up.
At the same time, think back on what you know about the groom’s relationship with his partner. How did they meet? How did you meet his partner for the first time? What makes their bond and journey special?
As you reflect, think about their qualities as individuals and as a couple. These traits will be a great addition to your best man speech.
Tip: Start Early
Do not leave your speech as a best man to the last minute. Ideally, start brainstorming and thinking of what to say as early as a few weeks before the wedding day. This will give you plenty of time to write, revise, and revise some more.
Step 2: Structure Your Speech
The outline above will help you structure your speech. However, feel free to add any personal touches or make changes to the order.
Tip: Decide What Tone You Want to Use
Spend a moment to decide how you want to deliver your speech. Do you want to be funny and witty? Do you want to sound casual? Do you want to flex your poetic muscles? Do you want to incorporate multiple styles and tones?
Step 3: Start the First Draft
Eventually, you have to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard). Write everything that comes to mind, letting your past reflections guide you as you compose your best man speech.
Do not worry about making it perfect on the first try—no one ever gets it perfect on the first try. Let yourself word vomit until you have written everything you have in mind.
Tip: Do Not Go Too Heavy With Inside Jokes
Although you understandably want to show how well you know the groom and make your guests laugh, avoid sharing inside jokes. Everyone will not get it without explaining the necessary context; you simply may not have the time to do so.
Step 4: Edit and Refine Your Draft
Start with any obvious grammatical errors. Fix faulty subject-verb agreements, incorrect uses of prepositions, and whatnot. You can use apps like Grammarly or built-in grammar checkers to help you with this part.
As you go along, read the speech aloud or in your head to see if there are any awkward spots. You may have to rephrase certain parts or rearrange sentences to make your speech flow better.
Be patient with yourself, as it might take multiple revisions before you get a speech you are satisfied with.
Tip: Keep It Concise
Aim for a best man’s speech that does not exceed 4–6 minutes. Any more than that and you risk losing your guests’ attention.
Step 5: Practice Giving the Speech
After a few revisions, start practicing the speech out loud. One benefit of this is that you will spot more ways to revise your speech to make it better.
At the same time, a practical tip is to mark points in your speech where you will pause for a moment and take a breath. This will make the delivery more relaxed and natural-sounding.
If possible, ask for a close friend or another bridal party member to listen to your speech. They can give you constructive criticism and feedback to further improve the content and your delivery.
Tip: Read the Room
As you practice your delivery to a test audience, pay attention to how they react to what you wrote. They might think that a certain anecdote is too embarrassing for the groom or that your speech has more humor than sincerity.
You might unintentionally humiliate yourself or the groom if you include stories that are too personal. Likewise, you might come across as insincere or performative if you try too hard with your speech.
Adjust your speech and delivery accordingly. As mentioned above, the revision process never stops—even as you give the speech at the reception, odds are you will make a few changes off the cuff.
Step 6: Make the Final Preparations
Print a few copies of your speech on high-quality stationery, as it is good to have extras in case something happens. If nothing else, it can be a wonderful keepsake for the newlyweds.
Make sure to have some positive coping mechanisms for stress as well. Look into breathing practices to help you manage your anxiety and stage fright.
Tip: Engage the Audience
Do not just read off your copy, since this will make you sound robotic. Pay special attention to making eye contact with guests, pausing for reactions, and ad-libbing when the opportunity presents itself.
Speech from the Best Man: Heartwarming Examples
1. Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention for just a few moments? Before I continue with my speech, I want to thank everyone for being here tonight. We know it isn’t cheap to attend a destination wedding, so we do want to make it clear that we will not be offering any rebate or cashback.
Anyway, for those of you who don’t know me, I’m Brian Mills. Nolan’s my cousin, and he has given me the honor—and stress—of being his best man. We actually only became close in high school when we both tried out for the basketball team.
Needless to say, both of us didn’t get in. We did continue practicing in our free time. These games allowed me to get to know Nolan better.
A lot has changed since then, huh? In high school, Nolan was wild, impulsive, and a bit irresponsible—we both were. Now, though, Nolan is reliable, clever, and puts everyone’s needs before his.
I remember when Nolan first introduced me to Lisa. His eyes were lit up in a way that I’d never seen before… not even when the Lakers won that championship in 2020! The more I got to know Lisa, the more I understood how perfect they are for each other; they’re both kind, adventurous, and passionate.
Lisa, I want to officially welcome you to the madness that is our family. We promise not to share too many embarrassing stories… at least until after your first anniversary.
Kidding aside, I have never seen Nolan as happy as he is with Lisa. You both bring out the best in each other, and it’s clear to all of us here that you share a love that is deep, genuine, and enduring.
So, let’s raise our glasses in a toast to Nolan and Lisa. May your love be modern enough to survive the times and old-fashioned enough to last forever. Cheers!
Thank you, everyone. Enjoy the rest of your evening!
2. Good evening, everyone! How’s your night going so far? I hope the food and drinks are all to your liking; we worked very hard tasting every dish our lovely caterer had to offer.
I’m Alex, and I have the great privilege of being David’s best man. Before I start, let’s give another round of applause to the beautiful couple. David, my man, you look sharp tonight! But I think I speak for everyone when I say: Emily, you’ve definitely stolen the show.
I’ve known David for almost 20 years now. We first met in middle school, and our friendship has been a rollercoaster ride ever since. From camping trips that turned into survival missions to late-night study sessions that rarely involved studying, I can say we’ve had our fair share of memorable moments.
But today, I want to focus on the biggest adventure David has had: his adventure with Emily. I still remember the day David told me about Emily. He said, “There’s this incredible woman.” And he was right. Emily, your kindness, intelligence, and sense of humor make you a perfect match for David. And David, well, I guess he isn’t too bad.
Together, you two are like a fine wine—you just keep getting better with time. David, you’ve found your soulmate in Emily. Your partnership is a testament to what every love should have—support, laughter, and a lot of patience (especially when David tries to cook or crack a joke).
Emily, welcome to our small, silly, but very loving friend group. You bring out the best in David, and for that, we are all grateful.
David, I have one piece of advice for you as you enter this new chapter: a happy wife is a happy life. Always remember that.
As we stand here in this beautiful venue, surrounded by friends and family, I am reminded of a quote I once heard: “Love isn’t about finding the perfect person. It’s about realizing that an imperfect person can make your life perfect.”/
So, let’s raise our glasses to David and Emily. May your life together be filled with endless love, laughter, and luck. Cheers!
Thank you, everyone. Let’s make this a night to remember!
3. Hi, everyone! I just want to take a few minutes of your time to say some words about our lovely newlyweds. My name is Charles, and Manny chose me as his best man.
The love story I’ve witnessed over the past six years is nothing short of magical. First of all, their growth as individuals is very laudable; I’ve seen Manny go from a slightly reckless and clueless college student to a calm and collected man. I can confidently say that Jenny’s presence has been transformative to Manny.
Jenny, it is clear that you and Manny are soulmates. Thank you for taking care of him, keeping him in check, and humbling him whenever he needs it.
May your love be a sturdy lighthouse amidst a rough and rowdy sea, shining a light that will guide you through the darkness and unpredictability of life.
Congratulations to you two! Cheers to the future!
Final Thoughts
Being someone’s best man is a huge honor; it means you occupy such a special part of their life they wanted you to have this major role in their wedding.
When preparing a best man speech outline, the most important thing to keep in mind is authenticity—stay true to yourself. If you want to write an amazing, unforgettable speech, just focus on pouring your heart onto paper. Everything else will follow.

Amazing Tips & Themes For Your Magical Wedding
The Ultimate Best Man Speech Guide (Examples And Templates Included)
Being picked to be the best man is such a great honor. You will feel blessed that the groom has thought of you, and considers you the best man and friend for the job.
As the best man, you will likely have many responsibilities in the run up towards the wedding. You’ll have to try on suits, organize the bachelor party, but the best man speech is the thing that most look forward to, or dread!
A best man speech needs to hook the audience in, reveal some funny stories about the groom, and even the bride, but also wish the couple well, and spread some laughter amongst the audience.
But, you have to do all of this in one single speech that can’t be too long, and can’t be too short!
So, how can you nail the best man speech? Well, that’s where we come in handy. We can offer you this ultimate guide to creating a best man speech, including tips, structure and examples you can take inspiration from.
How To Structure A Best Man Speech
If you’re unsure of how to go about planning your best man speech, then we can help you out with this simple structure to follow and keep yourself on track.
This structure is a sort of guide, you don’t have to use it, but it’s a good idea to follow the structure so you cover all bases when doing the speech.
It can also help you when actually performing the speech, as you’ll know what needs to come next and in which order to go over your stories and anecdotes.
A good best man speech begins with:
Try introducing yourself with a funny one liner about who you are and how you know the happy couple.
After you’ve had your fun, balance this out by saying something meaningful and sincere about the groom, his qualities or your friendship.
Best Man Speech Do’s And Don’ts
There are definitely a few do’s and don’ts when it comes to speaking at someone’s wedding. You’ll want to keep it concise, funny, but not too over the top jokey. Here’s our recommendations of what to do, and what not to do.
First things first, you’ll want to plan ahead, and write a few stories and anecdotes down that you can remember. Do this for a few weeks before the wedding, so it gives you time to come up with the right memories to share.
You should also consider who this speech is going to be said around.
If the groom’s very traditional great aunt or grandma is there, it could be a good idea to avoid any crass, rude stories that could make family members uncomfortable. Save those lines for the bachelor party!
Finally, make sure you focus on the couple, not just the groom.
This day is about the two of them. While you are doing a speech because you are the best man to the groom, it is important that you bring in the bride/partner in your speech so that overall you are wishing both of them well on their new adventure.
What Not To Do
Don’t use foul language, or inflammatory language. You don’t want to cause a dark cloud over the event by offending anyone or causing a scene.
The same goes for mentioning exes (who could well be at the wedding) or bringing up sore subjects during the speech. Keep it fun, lighthearted, and hilarious.
This is far more impactful and will really get the audience involved in your speech.
Finally, and this is an important one- don’t make it about you. This is not your shining moment, your time will come.
It’s a chance for them to see the couple in a different light, from your perspective, not learn everything about you.
Tips For Writing A Best Man Speech
We’ve also got some brief tips for writing and performing your best man speech!
Qualities To Talk About In The Best Man Speech
For instance, if you’re talking about the groom’s thoughtfulness, use funny anecdotes that relate to this, and bring it back to that whenever possible.
You want to talk about his great qualities, poke a little fun, or share a funny story, but then talk about how these qualities have translated into his relationship with his partner, or how they have brought them closer together.
Best Man Speech Examples
Good evening everyone. For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Tom, younger brother and best man of the groom. For those of you that do know me…heeeeeeey!
I have known Jack for…X years now (your age) and have always looked up to him. He had it all, the career, the intelligence, the sense of humor, and now the girl. Then again, I got the good looks.
In all seriousness, I have always looked up to my big brother. He’s always had a flair for sports, and genuinely has a heart of gold.
Being the youngest of the two of us, Jack has made me a better man, mainly because of the character building he put me through as a child. Jack would love taunting me by stealing my favorite stuffed animals.
I cherished my favorite, Mr. Snuggles, until one day Jack told me to come downstairs and see the new toy that our Rottweiler had been given.
I was so excited to see our little furry boy happy and playing with his toy until I realized that Jack had offered up Mr. Snuggles in sacrifice with a huge grin on his face. It was a day I won’t forget.
Despite the taunting and the terrorizing, Jack has been the man that I’ve always aspired to be. In all of the years I’ve been around Jack, he’s always been tenacious and worked hard for what he wants. And he’s always gotten it.
After asking Jenny out the first time, and she said no , he didn’t give up. He knew she was the one for him! It’s a good thing he has the patience of a saint, as it took another 3 attempts to get the first date!
With Jack being the older, but not often the wiser brother, he managed to get himself into some mishaps in the past.
When he did finally get a chance to take Jenny out on a date, he turned up at the wrong house, and managed to slip and break his shoulder all in one fantastic, first meeting with the parents.
With Jenny at his side, Jack’s clumsy mishaps are less and less. You truly bring out the best in him, Jen. I would say welcome to the family, but you’ve been a part of our lives for some time already, and I am truly blessed to be able to call you my new sister.
From day one, you’ve fit right in, as you too have taken on the role of teasing Jack just as I wanted. Let me tell you guys, there have been many pranks that Jenny and I have pulled off on Jack.
Other times, we’ve hidden around the house just when Jack is coming home from a long day at the office, to ambush him with Nerf guns until he pleads for mercy! Let’s just say justice has been served for Mr. Snuggles.
I quickly realized that Jenny and Jack were cut from the same mold. You two are a real example of what it means to marry your best friend, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for the two of you.
Hi everyone! For those of you who don’t know me already, I am Zach, the best man of James! When James asked me to be the best man I felt like it was such an honor.
Then he reminded me that it’s not just about organizing the bachelor party and I have to actually come to the wedding so…here I am.
Just kidding. Me and James have been through thick and thin. I’ve watched him go from a weedy, awkward teenager to a less weedy, awkward adult!
Britney would probably argue with me over the adult part! James has always had that boyish sense of humor that’s often gotten us into trouble over the years.
He’s probably carving out some obscenity in the wood I thought.
This is why it came as such a shock when later that day it was I who was called into the principal’s office, and as I walked with my head hung in shame to my fate, James smiled wide and proudly.
Ever since that day, James and I have been at war with one another to get the other one back! But deep down, I know that James would do anything for me. If I needed someone at 4am, James is that friend.
Despite our differences, I know he’s as good as family to me, and all of the Henderson’s have welcomed me into their home on many occasions, and now Britney gets to have that same privilege.
In all seriousness, if Britney gets half as much joy in being married to James, that I have had in being his friend over the years, then she will be incredibly lucky indeed.
On behalf of all the groomsmen, bridesmaids and myself, I would like to thank James and Britney for having us be a part of their special day. I know how hard you’ve worked to make this a day to remember, and you’ve definitely succeeded.
Hello everyone. My name is Joe and I’d just like to thank John for finally confirming that I am in fact – the best man, after 20 years of friendship. 20 years is a long time.
Just think, back then…Low rise jeans were in fashion, Spiderman was the favorite superhero, and Ben Affleck and J-Lo were together. So really, nothing has changed in 20 years, and the same goes for our friendship.
I remember one time in college, we decided that reading books and writing our own essays just wasn’t for us anymore. We decided to pay someone to write us an essay, and we would switch it up to pass the class.
Since then, I’ve realized what a tenacious person, good friend and loyal individual John was, and it’s an absolute blessing to be up here with you tonight as your best man.
So, if you wouldn’t mind joining me in raising a glass to John’s mom, who can’t be with us today, but is with us in spirit. Cheers.
In addition, I’d like to thank both Mia’s parents, and John’s dad who have helped make this day extra special for the happy couple, which I’m sure they are eternally grateful for.
Finally, I’d like to thank the groomsmen for organizing and completing the best bachelor party Miami has ever seen. I only hope it was the send off John was hoping for before he begins the next stage of his life with Mia. (But I highly doubt it)
Ladies and Gentleman, I have an announcement to make. If there is anyone here tonight that is feeling nervous, apprehensive, or maybe even a little nauseous at what lies ahead…then it’s probably because you’ve just married Adam.
Before I start the character assassination that is my best man’s speech, let me just thank Adam and Olivia for having us be a part of this very special day.
Our time at University was one of the best in my life, and I’ve far too many stories to tell you about our lovely Adam here.
And why wouldn’t he be? All those who know Olivia know what a lovely, and caring person she is. She deserves a good husband. Thank god Adam got there first before she could find one!
I’ll never forget the time a few years back during a friendly soccer game where I slipped and fell over on my side, snapping and breaking my ankle.
Adam was at my side within SECONDS…to let me know he caught my fall on video. Emergency Medical Services *Scoff*. Only when he saw the angle of my ankle did his medical training kick in.
All jokes aside, Adam and Olivia have always been there for me, and I them. I’d like to think of them as family rather than friends, and can only hope that continues going forward.
Hello everyone. My name is Kane, and I am the best man, and longtime friend of Rob. I was, however, somewhat surprised to be asked to be the best man, as Rob has never been able to admit this over the years.
I asked friends and family for advice, and according to tradition, I am supposed to sing Rob’s praises and tell you all about his fantastic qualities. Well, sorry to tell you, but I can’t sing and I don’t lie. So that’s out of the window.
His willingness to do anything for anyone, without accepting anything in return is what makes Rob extra special, and a joy to be around.
Looking back, I was probably a big nuisance always wanting to go play over his house, but I had some of the best time of my life growing up with Rob by my side. We’ve been there for every big moment of each other’s lives.
I can’t think of anyone better to look after my Rob here, and I know he will do everything he can to look after you for the rest of his days.
Thank you both so much for a fantastic day. If the rest of your lives is half as good as today has been, then you are in for a joyful marriage indeed. Please join me everyone in raising a glass to the newly weds, Rob and Sophia. Cheers!

Best Man Speech For Friend
Best Man Speech for Brother
“Good evening, hope everyone is having a good time tonight. I feel very privileged and honored to be standing here tonight celebrating this lovely union. Two years ago, Matt gave the best man speech at my wedding and made a lot of awkward jokes. So needless to say, I’ve been waiting for this moment for a really long time! For those who don’t know, I am Matt’s brother, Mike. I first met Matt when I was two years old at our parent’s house in Boston. To be quite honest, I wasn’t thrilled because I really wanted a sister. And I think he knew because Matt would do ridiculous things like throw my toothbrush in the toilet, pour water at me when I was asleep and run across the room naked when I had any friends over. This made me less popular than I already was. Matt always excelled in school, was captain of the debate team (apologies to Cara, but he can argue his way out of anything!) and can make a mean steak. The truth is, despite him being an annoying brother at the time, I came out winning in the end. Because of him and this beautiful night, I am getting the sister I always wanted. Cara, you’re beautiful and our family loves you so much. Thank you for making my brother so happy. Let’s celebrate this amazing union and raise a glass to the newlyweds ! On behalf of the groomsmen and bridesmaids, we’d like to wish you a life full of love, happiness, and joy. To everyone who made tonight happen, thank you. You’ve made this night very special.” Source
Short Best Man Speeches
“Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention, please? As the best man, I stand here today to say a few words about the remarkable love story between my incredible friend, [groom’s name], and his beautiful bride, [bride’s name]. [Groom’s name] and I have been through thick and thin together, and I’ve had the privilege of witnessing his growth as a person. But it wasn’t until [bride’s name] came into his life that I saw a change I can only describe as transformative. Their love is like a beacon, guiding them through life’s ups and downs. So here’s to the newlyweds—a couple who have found not just love, but true companionship. May your journey be filled with happiness, passion, and an everlasting bond.”
“Sure, here’s an even shorter best man speech example: Good evening, everyone. For those who don’t know me, I’m [Your Name], the best man. I want to thank [Bride’s Name] and [Groom’s Name] for this wonderful celebration. [Groom’s Name], you’ve been an amazing friend, and seeing you with [Bride’s Name] brings such joy. Speech for Neil and Claire
“Hi my name is Paul and Neil has asked me to be his best man for this wonderful occasion. I would like to say it is a very special honor but with it, comes the responsibility of giving the bloody speech. I would not say it is very comfortable to wear a tuxedo in a 30-degree church, which is not air-conditioned. The church ceremony I’m sure you’ll all agree was a wonderful, wonderful occasion. Maybe a little hot, but I’m glad to see so many of you have replaced your electrolytes with fuel of the alcoholic kind since the reception began. I have known Neil and Claire for_________ [how many years] years. You might say Neil and I met by accident, but it is no accident that Neil met Claire. If you know Neil you know he is an excellent athlete, in fact I noticed his Athletes foot right away. This was a man who had his knees and ankles shaved, for easy taping. I knew this was a hard-core sports fanatic. We both share a tremendous love of football and basketball. For many years, we have had a running bet during the season as to who will score more goals or more runs which of course, I always won. Neil is a ______________ [Groom’s Occupation] in Truro, and I thought__________________________________[Funny or quirky aspect about grooms occupation] Neil is a man who has dedicated his life to __________________[Grooms occupation] And now I’m sure will use his experience with ___________________________[what the Groom does in his occupation] in his marriage with Claire. It is great that Neil found Claire. He has always been looking for someone young, dynamic, intelligent, attractive, and with good health insurance. Neil and Claire met_________________________ [where they meet], But I have it on good authority that Neil started looking for a wife on the internet. And with a multitude of resources at his fingertips, he found some really great stuff, but sadly was unable to find himself a suitable partner. That is, until I mentioned to him that the correct category to be looking should be Woman Seeking Man. I explained the way it works, send an old picture when you still had lots of hair, lie about your height and weight, and at all other times be sincere and honest. I imagine that when Neil and Claire met and introduced each other he said I’m Neil and she said, “I need a Diamond.” So, Neil said, sure let’s pick one out. Claire is a Diamond. Neil is a gem; I think together they make beautiful jewellery. No Marriage would be complete without some brotherly advice to help set you on your way… So I canvassed the room and got some really good stuff for you! Love, honor and cherish each other, and don’t forget to take out the garbage. Your wife is always right. Just in case she is not right, refer back to #2. Always, yes always, notice every new hairstyle or dress. Do something nice for each other every single day. If she asks if something makes her look fat the answer is categorically, NO. Flowers are always a good Idea, even if you are not in trouble. There is really nothing better than a good foot rub or massage. Your wife is more important than sports. I guess. Even the cup final. It is a great joy for me to see Neil and Claire so happy. You learn things when you get older. Hmmm, I mean more mature. You make better decisions, isn’t it great that two people would entwine and commit to each other for life. Love, isn’t that what it is all about? We are here to celebrate that glorious event and this ceremony is all about letting the world know how much Neil and Claire’s love for each other is a reflection of one’s own soul in another’s. Anyway, it is time to celebrate the joyous and unbridled love that these two spectacular people will share the rest of their lives. Would you please stand now and join me in a toast. To love and laughter and happily ever after.” Source
What are the key elements that should be included in a memorable and heartfelt best man’s speech?
That is what Steven Greitzer, wedding tech entrepreneur and officiant, CEO of Provenance, said:
“There are many key elements to take into account when pulling together a great toast:
- Include 2-3 stories in your speech that capture the essence of the groom and your friendship.
- Make sure your speech is appropriate by discussing “no-go’s” with the couple beforehand.
- Acknowledge the groom’s partner in your speech and speak about how the relationship has helped the groom grow (more on that below).
- Offer a thematic takeaway, such as the importance of friendship or the strength of the couple’s love.
- Be sure to practice

When creating the Best Man speech outline for your talk, include the following elements to involve everyone, making one and all feel that they are important participants in the merrymaking for the newlywed couple:
Use a Magnetic Opening Line
The opening words of your Best Man presentation should grab everyone’s attention. If you favor a romantic approach to start off a speech, you can start with a statement like, “True love wins all,” and then list the various ways the Groom, through his true love for his Bride, has won all her attention and affections.
- If some of the Groom’s favorite hip singer-songwriters date back to the 1960s and ’70s, you can quote from Bob Dylan: “ Love is just a four-letter word ,” going on to mention the many words of just four letters that relate to feelings of true love like “ kiss, hold, keep and ever. ” Be intent and clever with the use of language, and you will achieve better engagement with your audience.
- If your tastes (or the tastes of the newlyweds) are somewhat more classical, you can start by quoting the familiar line from Elizabeth Barrett Browning: “ How do I love thee, Let me count the ways. ” This popular line has been repeated in many variations by countless poets and songwriters ever since, so have no fear of labeling yourself as an egghead when quoting it. This opening line will also give you a chance to mention the main virtues and attributes of the Bride.
Thank the Other Speakers
It is always appropriate and appreciated if you thank the other speakers for the occasion. These speakers usually include the Maid of Honor and the Bride’s Father as well as any other members of the wedding party that the Bride and Groom ask to speak.
It is always good form to express your gratitude for their contributions to this special moment and event. Never criticize or make jokes about what they say or how they say it. Just thank them politely and continue with your own remarks since you know very well how to write a best-man speech.
Congratulate the Newlyweds
Congratulate the wedding couple on this exciting first chapter in their lives together. This is the ideal time to tell the guests how you met your great friend, the Groom. If you happen to be the Groom’s brother or cousin, you can recreate moments of hilarity from your younger years together or shared experiences of suspense or intrigue.
Recalling funny incidents or telling best man speech jokes involving the Groom is totally acceptable, so long as you keep the format and content clean and respectable.
Expert tip from Steven Greitzer:
“A great best man speech strikes the perfect balance of humor and sincerity. You want it to be memorable, but for the right reasons. Check with the couple to see if there are any topics you need to avoid or any topics that might be of particular concern to anyone in the audience. In the Provenance Toast Builder , the couple has the option to call out any topic they do, or don’t, want you to include. If you have any jokes in your speech you are unsure about, run them by someone who is close to the couple who you trust. And if you have a feeling that a joke might upset them or not land well with the audience – err on the side of caution. It’s their big day, not yours! There’s a way to have a funny best man speech that doesn’t upset grandma. Find the balance.”
Compliment the Bride
Now it is time to pull out the stops and give high praise to the Bride using your knowledge of how to write a best man talk. Highlight and emphasize her finest qualities, talents, and accomplishments.
Let them know just how overjoyed you are to celebrate the marriage of these two special people of whom you think so highly. Then give the Bride another charming compliment using top-quality speech writing tips.
Read Messages from Absent Guests
Take time to read some messages from invited guests who could not attend the wedding. This gesture is always appreciated by the absent guests and the Bride and Groom, alike. It also includes their congratulatory thoughts and best wishes for the newlyweds in the day’s special events.
Include a Famous Quote or Poem
Enchant your attentive audience of wedding guests further by reciting a well-known quote or poem that suits the occasion. This adds a creative literary element to the post-wedding celebration for the honored couple. You may want to consult other templates, including a listing of groomsman speech examples.
Best Man Speech Quotes
Choose Best Man speech quotes that reflect the couple’s personality, add humor, and keep them relevant.
Love is like war: easy to begin but very hard to stop. H. L. Mencken
Marriage is a workshop where husband works and wife shops.
A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person. Mignon McLaughlin
Propose a Toast to the Wedding Couple
Raise your glass of champagne so the guests can eagerly follow your example as you deliver a heartfelt toast of optimistic good wishes for the excellent health, increasing wealth, and everlasting happiness of the newlyweds.
The toast should be given with gusto and true sincerity and may include mild best-man speech jokes. Remember that you speak for all the well-wishers in the room who want all the best for this newly married Bride and Groom, so put your best energy, spirit, and talents for convincing elocution into this featured Grand Finale.
The “Thankful” Speech
“Hello everyone, it’s such a pleasure to be here tonight as [Groom’s] best man. And I want to begin with saying what an honor it is that I was chosen to stand by your side today. You’ve always been someone that I looked up to and I am just beyond grateful that I get to share in this moment with you and [Bride]. [Groom] is someone that I’ve come to care for greatly over the years and I am so happy that he’s found someone to share his life with and start a family with. [Groom] has always been my right hand throughout the biggest moments of my life and I can’t wait to be able to watch everything beautiful unfold for the two of you. Cheers to a lifetime of happiness!”
The “Smart Move” Speech
“There’s an old saying about friendship that reads, “It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them,” and goodness that couldn’t be more true for me and my boy, [Groom]. I could go into all the funny stories that include some of that stupidity but instead I’d rather focus on all the smart moves he’s made. His friendships, the relationship he has with his family, his career, it’s all a reflection of the incredible man he’s become. But really, the smartest move he’s made is marrying you, [Bride]. Let’s toast to the best decision [Groom’s] ever made. I wish you a lifetime of love, happiness and success.”
The “She Was the One” Speech
“Ladies and gentlemen, thank you all for coming out tonight to celebrate the wedding of two people we all love, [Bride] & [Groom]! When I first met [Bride], I knew that she was the woman [Groom] would end up marrying. Even if it hadn’t dawned on him quite yet, it was obvious to everyone around just how smitten he was with her. They talk about a bride’s glow, but this man was shining since the moment he met [Bride]. He changed for the better without realizing it. And we all could see it. He couldn’t stop talking about her. We’d go out with the boys and [Bride’s] name would be brought up every two minutes. So, when he came to me to tell me that he would be proposing my only response was, ‘Well, it’s about time!’ There’s something special about these two. They go together without forcing it. They love each other without fighting it. And they care about each other without thinking about it. She was the one from the very beginning [Groom], and we’re all so happy to be able to take part in your big day. Cheers!”
Best Man Speech Opening Lines
Your opening lines are your best-man speech icebreakers, so it’s important that they are good. Grab the attention of your guests with witty best man speech openers such as these.
- “I would like to begin by congratulating the groom on his excellent taste in best men. He has really outdone himself this time, and I’m pleased.”
- “I have been asked by the bride and groom not to share any embarrassing stories, crude jokes, or pranks during my best man’s speech… so I guess that’ll be it from me! Thank you all for listening.”
- “If you cannot hear me at the back, nothing to worry about. By the complete silence in the front row here, you can rest assured that you’re really not missing much.”
- “Is anyone here this afternoon feeling nervous and queasy at the thought of what lies ahead? If you are, it’s probably because you’ve just married (groom’s name).”
- “All of you here who really know the bride must know that she is a wonderful person who deserves a good husband. Thank goodness (groom’s name) married her before she found one.”
Best Man Speech One-Liners
I am about to make the groom cry. I just received the food bill.
He is smart, tall, kind, generous….. Who am I actually talking about?
Hi, the groom is a great friend. Our friendship is 2hours old. I was hired as he’s got no friends.
His colleagues describe him as a first-class banker – I may have misheard them.
I heard some time that marriage is a 50/50 affair. Believe that at your own peril. We have factors called women and improper fractions.
One-liners are sharp jokes delivered in one sentence. A good one-liner is concise and meaningful. It is instant but loaded with humor that can keep the guests laughing for a while. It is important that the best man speech jokes contain one-liners.
Best Man Toasts Examples
“It’s been an emotional day, even the cake is in tiers.”
“Folks, I have been told I am not allowed to have a drink until AFTER my speech. If I seem like I’m in a hurry to finish, it’s because I am.”
“I hope the two of you have the two essential things it takes to have a successful marriage 1) a sense of humor 2) selective hearing.”
“Psychiatrists say that girls tend to marry men like their fathers. That must be why mothers cry at weddings.”
“Love is not about how often you say I love you, but how often you show that it’s true.”
Best Man Speech Jokes
“They say marriage is a journey, and tonight we celebrate the beginning of an epic road trip for the bride and groom. Just remember, guys, never forget to ask for directions!”
“They say the key to a successful marriage is patience, understanding, and a remote control with fresh batteries. Groom, make sure you always keep that remote handy!”
“Let’s raise our glasses to the newlyweds: may their love be like Wi-Fi, strong and never disconnecting, even in the midst of Netflix binges!”
“As the best man, it’s my duty to share a piece of advice with the groom: in marriage, always remember that a happy wife means a happy life… and also remember to nod and agree, even when she’s wrong!”
“Marriage is a lifelong commitment, just like the gym membership the groom signed up for and rarely uses. But this time, there are no cancellation fees!”
Best Man Speech Tips
When delivering your best man speech, it’s essential to captivate the audience with your words and presence. Here are some tips to ensure a memorable and engaging delivery:
- Maintain good eye contact with the audience: Look directly at the guests while speaking. Eye contact helps establish a connection and shows that you are genuinely engaged with them.
- Speak clearly and at a moderate pace: Enunciate your words clearly and avoid rushing through your speech. Speaking at a moderate pace allows the audience to understand and absorb your message effectively.
- Use appropriate gestures and body language to enhance your delivery: Use hand gestures and body movements to emphasize key points and add energy to your speech. However, be mindful of not going overboard and distracting from your message.
- Incorporate pauses for comedic timing and to allow the audience to react: Timing is crucial, especially when delivering humorous anecdotes or punchlines. Pause before and after delivering a joke to build anticipation and give the audience time to laugh and react.
By implementing these delivery and presentation tips, you’ll engage the audience, leave a lasting impression, and make your best man speech a memorable highlight of the wedding celebration.
Are there any common mistakes to avoid, and how to overcome nervousness or stage fright?
According to wedding planner Mindy Weiss, “speeches can help make or break a wedding” . And we agree with this opinion. Speeches have the power to elevate the celebration, bringing tears of joy and laughter to guests, while also creating cherished memories that last a lifetime. However, poorly delivered speeches can disrupt the flow and energy of the event, leaving guests feeling disconnected and the couple disappointed.
Steven Greitzer convinced that one of the biggest mistakes is when the person giving the wedding speech only talks about the partner they’re closest with, unintentionally making the other partner feel left out and unimportant: “To help remedy this, the Provenance Toast Builder gives you the option to either talk about each partner 50/50, or to talk 70% about your person and 30% about their partner (which is a good rule of thumb). The Toast Builder also has thoughtful prompts to encourage you to share why they’re both 1) good people and 2) a great match for each other.
What is the best man supposed to say in his speech?
The best man should share anecdotes about the groom, praise the couple, thank everyone, and propose a toast. Keep it lighthearted and sincere.
How long should a best man speech be?
The best man’s speech should typically be 5 to 7 minutes long. This duration is long enough to share heartfelt sentiments, humorous anecdotes, and well-wishes without losing the audience’s attention. Keeping it concise and engaging ensures it remains memorable and enjoyable for everyone.
How do I write a good man speech?
Write a good best man speech by including humor, expressing genuine sentiments, avoiding inappropriate content, and keeping it focused on the couple. Practice for smooth delivery and timing.
There is truly something for everyone today to create the perfect Best Man Speech for that very special couple and their after-wedding reception, dinner, and celebration. Fond remembrances, amusing stories and anecdotes, humorous quotes, and emotional phrases end with the joyful ring of a clever, yet heartfelt Best Man Toast to the Bride and Groom. The contemporary wedding is truly a work of love and art with all the trimmings and enticing treats for one and all to treasure and enjoy.

Is the best man required to give a speech on the wedding day?
As best man, you’re in charge of more than just standing next to the groom (and looking fly) on the big day — you’ve got responsibilities, my friend! And in addition to rocking a great ‘fit , keeping the other groomsmen in check, and getting everyone in the party mood, one of those responsibilities is giving a killer best man speech.
While the best man isn’t required to give a speech on the wedding day, it is a fun tradition that goes back decades. This is your chance to share your love for the newlyweds — and tell a few funny stories about your best friend while you’re at it!
Because of this, the happy couple (and the guests) will likely expect you to stand up and say a few words, but if you’re extra nervous about public speaking, feel free to talk to the love birds about skipping it. They may have another tradition or ritual that you can do instead of a best man speech.
Still searching for the perfect ‘fit for the big day? We’ve got you covered with this list of the most stylish suits for groomsmen !
At what point in the wedding day does the best man speech happen?
Traditionally, the best man speech takes place during the reception after the groom (or couple) has given their toast. This is when everyone is gathered together, the good vibes are rolling, and the drinks are flowing. It’s the perfect time to congratulate the couple and get the party started!
While this is the traditional timing for best man speeches, the couple may have different preferences based on their wedding timeline. It’s always a good idea to check with them ahead of time to ensure you’re fully prepared for your moment in the spotlight.
What kind of topics should you cover in a best man speech?
When it comes to best man speeches, there’s no one-size-fits-all formula. Every speech is different, just like every couple is different! But no matter which direction you choose, you want to focus on congratulating the newlyweds and expressing your love for the happy couple.
While you probably have endless crowd-pleasing stories about the groom, it’s also important to spotlight the couple as a whole, instead of writing your entire best man speech about your friend.
Do you have a funny story about the groom asking his S.O. out on their first date? Or a sweet anecdote from when he told you he found “the one?” This approach will help them both feel special on the big day — and earn you brownie points with both sides of the guest list!
P.S. We’ve included more specific examples to write about in your best man speech down below, plus a template to get you started!
What topics are off-limits during a best man speech?
Remember: this a wedding, not a bachelor party! When writing your best man speech, the goal is to keep it classy and appropriate for all ages, while still injecting a bit of your personality into the toast. It’s a delicate balance, so here are a few topics to avoid on the mic!
- Super personal or embarrassing stories: Sure, you might have some hilarious anecdotes about the groom, but if they might embarrass the couple or their families, then they’re better left unsaid. After all, this is a celebration of love, not a roast!
- Controversial topics: Whenever you’re giving a speech (and especially at a wedding filled with your best friend’s loved ones), you should avoid anything that could be considered controversial or offensive. This includes jokes or comments about religion, politics, race, gender, or sexuality. Even if you think you’re being funny, you don’t want to risk offending anyone in the audience.
- Past relationships: If there was ever a time to not talk about an ex, it’s at that person’s wedding. No matter how good the story is, bringing up the couple’s former flames during the best man speech will only ever be awkward when they’re sitting next to you in their wedding best.
- Inside jokes: The most successful best man speeches are the ones that make the entire audience smile, laugh, or tear up. To keep your speech inclusive and engaging for everyone in the room (not just your friend group), avoid those inside jokes that you “just had to be there” to get.
How long should a best man speech be?
For best man speeches that make an impact, shorter is usually better. As a general rule, aim for around 3 to 5 minutes (about 750 words). This is long enough to cover the essentials and tell a few great stories, without losing the audience’s attention. Anything longer, and you might risk people getting distracted or bored — especially if the speeches are taking place later in the evening.
When writing your best man speech, always focus on the quality over the length. With such a short window, you want to make every word count. So practice your delivery, time yourself, and aim for a speech that’s heartfelt, fun, and concise.
When in doubt, aim for a best man speech that’s short and sweet, rather than super long. Attention spans at this point in the wedding day are limited!
Does your best man speech have to be funny?
No, your speech doesn’t have to be funny, and jokes are by no means a requirement. It’s easy to feel pressured to turn your best man speech into a stand-up routine, but this definitely isn’t necessary. If it doesn’t feel natural, then it’s always better to stick with a heartfelt and authentic approach that reflects your unique relationship with the newlyweds.
On the other hand, if you are the class clown of the friend group, then humor is always appreciated! A crowd-pleasing joke or two during your best man speech will keep the good vibes going — just be sure to balance them with sincere and heartfelt sentiments. At the end of the day, you want to be yourself, speak from the heart, and let your personality shine.
Who does the best man thank in his speech?
Aside from the anecdotes and words of love, best man speeches should also include a few heartfelt thank you’s. It’s best practice to express your gratitude to the newlyweds, as well as the loved ones who made this day possible. This could be the couple’s parents, their (other) best friends, and anyone else who played a big part in their relationship.
And finally, get the crowd on your side by thanking all the guests for being a part of this special celebration. Without their love and support, the day wouldn’t be complete!
So, where do you start? You don’t have to be a skilled speech writer to write a best man speech that wins over the room. That’s where we come in! We’ve seen our fair share of killer best man speeches, and we’ve made a note of all the do’s and don’ts to follow during your time at the mic.
By the end of the best man speech, the crowd should feel like they know a little bit more about the couple’s love story — and be excited to spend the rest of the night celebrating them (you’re basically their hype man!).

1. Craft an Outline for Your Best Man Speech
One thing you shouldn’t do when giving your best man speech? Wing it. Before you step into the spotlight, spend some time crafting an outline for what you’re going to say.
I know, I know, this tip might be bringing you back to your days in English Lit class. But it’s a surefire way to ensure you cover all the essentials, without rambling on and on. Plus, it could be as simple as writing down each section of your best man speech, plus the main points you want cover in those sections — from the funny intro to your favorite anecdotes to the people you want to thank. Done!
P.S. We’ve included a template down below to make writing an outline for your best man speech a little easier!
2. Consider the Formality of the Wedding When Crafting Your Best Man Speech
Not sure which tone to take for your best man speech? Let the formality of the wedding be your guide. For example, a laid-back beach wedding is the perfect opportunity for a funny best man speech filled with witty jokes and wild stories, while a black tie optional affair may call for something a little classier.
The formality of the wedding may also depend on who’s in attendance. A small crowd filled with the couple’s best friends and closest family members will allow for a different type of best man speech than a large guest list that includes their co-workers, neighbors, and distant relatives.
Read the room, and don’t be afraid to ask the love birds beforehand about how formal to make your best man speech.
3. Brainstorm a List of Your Favorite Moments With The Groom and the Couple
How did you first meet the groom? Was there a moment or experience that bonded you together? Were you there when he first laid eyes on his other half? What are your favorite memories with the three of you together?
Do a brain dump of all these moments before writing your best man speech, then sift through them to pick out the best jokes, anecdotes, and sentimental moments to share with the crowd.
4. When Crafting Jokes, Choose Ones That Will Have Wide Appeal
As we mentioned before, the best examples of best man speeches bring the entire crowd in on the joke. You and the couple may have an incredible inside joke that will have you all on the floor, but if it leaves the rest of the room in crickets then this may not be the best time for it.
Instead, choose jokes that everyone will enjoy. If it will make the groom’s grandmother and the flower girl laugh, then you have yourself a winner. And if you do want to include a few inside jokes, balance them with some crowd-pleasing cracks — or give the crowd a little backstory about what makes this joke so funny to the couple.
5. Run Your Best Man Speech By Someone Else in the Wedding Party
So, how do you know if your jokes (or the rest of your best man speech, for that matter) will have widespread appeal? Recruit some test subjects first!
Ask someone that’s close to the couple to listen to your speech before you present it to a room filled with people. This could be a bridesmaid, a fellow groomsmen, or a close family member. These are the people that know the couple just as well as you do (and have some knowledge about the wedding), so they’ll have better insight about what works, and what doesn’t.
Not only will this help ensure that your jokes land, your speech flows, and your anecdotes hit home, but it will also give you a chance to practice speaking in front of other people. Which brings us to our next tip…
6. Practice Your Best Man Speech (And Aim to Put it To Memory!)
Before giving your best man speech, be sure to follow the three P’s: practice, practice, practice. Say the speech in front of the mirror, in front of a few friends, or in front of a video camera to gain confidence and get your inflections + hand gestures just right.
You can even do a mini dress rehearsal in your suit to get a feeling for the big moment. Practice your best man speech with a microphone (or a hairbrush!) and imagine you’re in the venue. When you visualize your speech going well, you’ll feel more prepared for the big moment!
We also recommend trying to memorize your best man speech. There’s nothing worse than someone reading from their phone or a stack of notecards — this can make the speech feel stiff and awkward (and doesn’t look great in photos). By memorizing it, you’ll be more present in the moment and the delivery will feel more natural.
GWS Pro Tip: If you struggle to memorize things or want to have a few notes to help with your nerves, then swap your notes app for a classy leather journal instead. This mini one is the perfect pocket size, and it’ll look great in photos!
7. Remember to Breathe and Take it Slow
When you’re nervous, you may want to rush the delivery to get the speech over with as fast as possible. But this will only make you feel more anxious, and it’ll make it harder for the audience to get the full impact of your best man speech.
Before you start talking, take a few deep breaths to calm your nerves. It also helps to focus on taking pauses throughout your best man speech — especially after a good joke. This signals to the audience that it’s time to laugh, and it gives them a moment to let your comic genius sink in.
Grab your pen and paper — it’s time to start writing your iconic best man speech! To help you create your plan of attack, we’ve designed a template that covers each section of your best man speech, plus specific examples to get you started.
Whether you want your best man speech to be funny, sentimental, or a mix of the two, this template will guide you in the writing and delivery process. From an opener that will get people laughing to a final toast that will inspire tears of joy, we’re covering all the bases.
So without further ado, here’s our template to help you write the best best man speech of all time!
1. Craft an Opener for Your Best Man Speech That Really Hooks Them
It’s always best to start your best man speech by introducing yourself — but that doesn’t mean your opener has to be boring! Spice it up with a funny one-liner, a heartfelt quote (this could be from a movie you and the groom love!), or a fun fact about you and the couple.
Don’t forget to keep the focus on the groom (or the couple as a whole), even as you’re introducing yourself. The crowd is here for them , so give the people what they want!
GWS Pro Tip: During this introduction, avoid talking about how nervous you are (even if you’re currently shaking in your dress shoes). Act confident, and you’ll look confident!
Best man speech example that will get everyone laughing: “There comes a time in everyone’s life when they meet their soulmate. The person who will love them and put up with them for the rest of their life. That moment came for [groom] 15 years ago when he met me.”
Best man speech template for a clever one-liner: “Good evening, everyone! I’m [name], [groom]’s best man, and I’m pretty sure I’m only up here because I know where all the embarrassing photos of him are hidden.”
Best man speech example that instantly hooks you: “As [groom’s] brother, I’m here tonight to tell you three things you never knew about [groom]. Sorry in advance mom and dad.”
2. Keep the Mood Light-Hearted With a Crowd-Pleasing Joke
If you didn’t include a joke in your opener, now’s your chance to get the crowd on your side. Remember: your best man speech doesn’t have to be a stand-up act. If you’re not a natural comedian, don’t force it — but a little laughter will go a long way to break the ice and keep spirits high.
When in doubt, balance your joke with some heartfelt sentiments. This will come across as more authentic, especially if you’re not the jokester of the group. Here are some examples you can steal for your best man speech!
Best man speech example for super tall grooms: “I’ve always looked up to [groom]. He follows his heart, he does the right thing, and he works hard at everything he does. But mostly, he’s 6 feet tall, so I have no choice.”
Best man speech example for couples who met online: “Before I continue, I wanted to give a quick shout-out to tonight’s sponsor: Tinder. Without you, we wouldn’t all be here this evening. So cheers to Tinder, and [groom’s partner] swiping right on [groom’s] fishing picture!”
Best man speech example for grooms with a beard: “[Partner’s name], you look beautiful today. [Groom’s name], you didn’t even shave!”
3. Tell One or Two Personal Anecdotes in Your Best Man Speech
Next up: storytime. This is where you should give a little more backstory about how you know the groom, and share some anecdotes that will make the crowd fall even more in love with the couple.
We get it, you probably have hundreds of stories that you could tell about the groom. How will you ever narrow it down?! When choosing which stories to write about in your best man speech, it helps to stick to a theme. This will ensure you stay on track and give your speech a well-rounded feel.
Some fool-proof themes are:
- What first bonded you together (college antics, brotherhood, coffee, you name it)
- All the ways the two of you are opposites (this is a fun way to compliment and poke fun at the groom)
- Funny facts the guests don’t know about the groom or the couple
- Why the love birds are perfect for each other
- Inspiring metaphors for marriage (ie: adventure, dreaming big, finding your other half)
Ultimately, you should tell 1 to 3 stories during your best man speech that sum up the kind of person the groom is, and why his partner is his perfect match. Here are a few examples to help you start brainstorming.
Funny best man speech example : “The groom and I have been friends for a long time, and we’ve had some pretty wild adventures together. And while I can’t share all of them here today (for legal reasons), I thought I’d tell you about one that really sticks out in my memory….”
Best man speech example about the couple’s meet-cute: “When [the couple] first met, I knew they were made for each other. It was obvious that first night when we were at a karaoke bar and they both sang Disney songs. Actually, I think the only person who didn’t know was [groom]. We suffered through months of googly eyes and hearing [partner’s name] in every sentence, just waiting for him to catch on. So when he told me that he was going to ask her out — and then, a year later, that he was going to propose — all I could say was: Finally.”
Best man speech template for brothers or childhood friends: “We’ve been through a lot together, but some of my favorite memories are of us camping every summer in Canada. Even though [groom] was always scared of a moose crashing through our tent while we slept, we still had some amazing adventures. From fishing in the lake to roasting marshmallows by the campfire, those summers were unforgettable. And now, as [groom] starts a new adventure with [his partner], I know he’s ready for anything — even a moose!”
4. Balance Your Best Man Speech With Heartfelt Sentiments
Once you’ve told one or two anecdotes, it’s time to dig deep, get heartfelt, and talk about how special the groom is to your life — and how great it is to watch him find his life partner. Don’t be afraid to get a little corny!
While all templates will be different, here are a few key points to cover during this part of the best man speech:
- Highlight what you love about the groom and admire about his love story
- Compliment the groom’s other half
- Express your gratitude to the couple for including you in their celebration
- Thank anyone else who made this day so special, including the couple’s parents (especially if they’re hosting the wedding) and the other members of the wedding party. You can also shout out the guests in attendance!
Sentimental best man speech example : “[Groom] has always been my partner in crime, my camping buddy, and my best friend. He’s always been the fearless one, and now he’s found a partner who’s just as courageous. I have no doubt that they’ll continue to blaze new trails together and create unforgettable memories along the way.”
Best man speech template for thanking the couple and the guests: “I’d like to thank everyone who came today to celebrate the happy couple. It’s a true testament to [the couple] that you’ve all taken the time to come and witness their marriage. I’d also like the thank the two of you for allowing me to be part of such a special day. That’s a lot of blind faith in my public speaking skills. Especially when there’s an open bar involved.”
Best man speech template for complimenting the love birds: “[The couple] takes hashtag couple goals to a whole new level. They wake up early to go to the gym together, come home and cook healthy meals, and make financially sound decisions for every part of their life. Now that you’re married, you guys can probably stop showing off. But in all seriousness, it’s something special to find your perfect other half. And that’s worth celebrating.”
5. Congratulate the Newlyweds and Wish Them Luck for Their Future
As you wind down your best man speech, be sure to congratulate the couple on their marriage and wish them luck for all their adventures ahead. Instead of giving a quick “congrats,” we love the idea of calling back to a story or joke from earlier in the best man speech. This will tie everything together in a perfect bow!
Heartfelt best man speech congratulations example : “Congrats to the newlyweds. You’ve found someone who loves you for who you are, and that’s a beautiful thing. I know that your marriage will be filled with love, laughter, and plenty of bad dad jokes.”
Best man speech congratulations example for adventurous couples: “Congratulations on finding the person who is game for every adventure that comes your way. I wish you both a lifetime of unconditional love and unforgettable experiences.”
Best man speech congratulations example for an unforgettable quote : “In the words of Forrest Gump, ‘I may not be a smart man, but I know what love is.’ And I’m looking at it today. Congratulations to the happy couple.”
6. Close Your Best Man Speech With a Toast
This is your grand finale, so end your best man speech with some fireworks! As you write your final toast, think about what you want your main takeaway to be. Are you hoping for light-hearted laughs, tears of joy, or a resounding “Awwww “? Take some time to write a closing statement that’s short, sweet, and full of love.
GWS Pro Tip: The best toasts invite the crowd to congratulate the couple with you. Use words like “we” and “us” instead of “I” to bring everyone together for this final moment.
Best man speech example for a sweet send-off : “So let’s all raise a glass to the newlyweds. May your love continue to grow stronger with each passing day, and may you never run out of things to laugh about. Cheers!”
Best man speech example for a final laugh: “So let’s all raise a glass to the most important people here. The bar staff. [Pause for laughter] For [the couple], cheers to a lifetime of love and laughter!
Best man speech example for all the happy tears: “So let’s raise a glass to [the couple’s] love. John Lennon said, ‘A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality.’ Cheers to all your dreams coming true.”

When writing a best man’s speech, you need to start early. It would be unsuitable to write the best man speech when it is close to the wedding because you might leave some important details out.
You may not have sufficient time to practice, and the speech may not be as great as envisaged. Spending more time to write the best man’s speech comes with a high chance of great delivery.
Another essential tip to note when writing the best man’s speech is to be as genuine as possible. You can employ nostalgia to amplify this effect by taking the guests down memory lane.
Tell them stories of how wonderful the couple are, and ensure you remain authentic to your speech. Do not change who you are because you want to impress the guest; take an approach that doesn’t offend the guests and couple.
Know the topics to avoid
Some people make the mistake of including some offensive topics when giving the best man’s speech. Be careful not to pass negative comments about marriage during the best man speech for wedding.
Avoid previous relationships, past divorces/marriages, addiction, drinking, offensive sex practices, etc. Your best man’s speech should be focused on celebrating the couple instead of causing problems.
Write it down
When curating the best man’s speech, ensure it doesn’t remain in your head. Even if you’re a great orator, you need to pen down the speech so you don’t miss any salient points.
You might get nervous that day, and it could affect your memory. You can use a small note card for convenience to write the speech.

How to Write a Best Man Speech (6 Easy Steps)
So, it happened. You were asked to be the Best Man at a close friend or relative’s upcoming wedding. And of course, you said yes!
But now that means you have to write and deliver a Best Man speech, and maybe you don’t have a clue where to start.
After all, it’s not something you do every day!
If you’re feeling unsure then don’t worry, you’re in the right place. I’m going to tell you exactly how to write a Best Man speech.
And the good news is it’s not rocket science. It’s just a sequence of logical steps.
So let’s see what they are, shall we?
Step 1: Learn the Logistics
One of the easiest mistakes to make is assuming that things will run a certain way on the day of your speech.
To avoid any nasty surprises, find out in advance how the wedding day and the speeches will be organised. Because things may be a little different to what you expect.
Here are some smart questions to ask the Groom before you get started:
- What’s the date of the wedding (basic but crucial!)
- Where do the speeches fit into the overall schedule?
- Who else is scheduled to speak and in what order? (Usually it’s the Father of the Bride, then the Groom, then the Best Man, but there are lots of possible variations.)
- Are there any specific time constraints you need to be aware of?
- Are there any topics that the Groom would prefer you to avoid?
- Are there specific stories the Groom will mention in his speech (so you can avoid duplicating them in yours)?
The Groom may not have all the answers to hand, but just getting a few answers can give you confidence to start working on your speech.
Step 2: Brain-dump Lots of Ideas
Once you’re clear about how your speech will fit into the wedding day schedule, and you’re aware of any important constraints, it’s time to start generating some ideas.
During this early phase, it’s best to focus on quantity rather than quality of ideas. I call it “brain dump mode”.
You don’t need to worry about structure or flow or anything like that, you’re just getting some raw ideas scribbled on a writing pad or typed into a document on your computer.
Your aim is just to generate as many possible topics as possible that could be used somewhere in your speech.
(Imagine these as the basic building materials you’ll use to assemble your Best Man speech.)
Here are some questions to ask yourself while in this mode:
- How did you first meet the Groom?
- What are his best (and worst) qualities?
- What are the most memorable moments from your friendship?
- What are the “running jokes” you share?
- What makes him and his new wife a good match?
- What advice do you want to pass on to your friend?
- What tips can you give his Bride for life with him?
More so than other speeches in the traditional wedding line-up you’ll want to look for ideas that present an opportunity for humour.
Remember: a genuinely funny Best Man speech isn’t just one that’s littered with off-the-shelf jokes. It’s one where you draw humour from real-life observations and situations that are specific to your friend.
(For more help with generating ideas, you can also check out my list of Best Man Speech Prompts.)
Step 3: Decide on a Suitable Structure
Now that you’ve generated some raw ingredients for your speech (and hopefully far more ideas than you will need!) you’ll want a structure to contain them.
There are lots of different structures you can use, and the best one will depend on the ideas you have generated.
Here are some possible structures:
- Chronological — if you’ve known the Groom for a long time you can structure your speech around key phases of his life: e.g., school days, early adulthood, first job, etc. It’s usually best to work your way forwards from your earliest memory to the present day.
- Perspectives — another option is to look at the Groom from a few different perspectives. For instance, what’s he like as a friend, as a sportsman, as a travelling companion, as a drinking buddy, etc.? What’s he like in his professional life compared with his personal life?
- Characteristics — you could also organise your speech according to the Groom’s most striking qualities or characteristics. You could talk about his loyalty, his determination, his sense of fun, his ambition, and so on, illustrating each one with examples and stories.
Note: Different structures will also give your speech a different “feel” so think about the style and tone you’d like to aim for.
You can also combine these structures to suit your needs. You could even choose a more novel structure driven by a big idea.
For instance, what if you structured your speech as a fairy tale with the Groom as an intrepid hero who has to overcome different challenges to win the heart of the princess (his Bride)?
Or you could structure your speech as a business presentation, complete with PowerPoint slides, which describes the “features and benefits” of the Groom as if he were a new product.
If you’re not sure what structure to use, look at your list of brainstormed ideas and see if they fall naturally into a set of categories.
Step 4: Organise Your Ideas
Looking at your chosen structure, write 3 to 5 headings for the main body of your speech. (You’ll add an introduction at the start and a toast at the end later in the process.)
Then pick the best ideas from your brainstormed list and start to drop them underneath the headings or sections of your speech.
What this looks like in practice will depend on whether you’re working on paper or on your computer. (Writing single ideas on sticky notes and moving them around between different headings or sections can be very effective.)
However you organise your speech, keep an eye on the balance between different sections…
If a section has too many ideas, you’ll need to trim it down.
If it doesn’t have enough ideas, you’ll either need to cut the whole section or generate some more ideas for it.
Here’s what a simple outline of your speech might look like:
Introduction
- Introduce myself as the Best Man and childhood friend
- Make a joke about how weird it is to see him dressed so smartly
- Apologise in advance to the Bride for what I’m about to reveal about Jason
School days
- Tell the story of us meeting on the first day of secondary school
- Talk about how I was always getting him in trouble (and how one teacher told his parents I was a “bad influence” on him)
- Talk about the temporary falling out we had when we fancied the same girl
University days
- Describe how he went off to university and I got a “real” job, but we stayed in touch even as we took different paths in life
- Tell the story of the messy weekend when I visited him in his student accommodation for the first time (and I got him into trouble — again!)
- Say how proud I was the day he graduated with a first class degree (but I had to buy the celebration drinks because he had no money left)
Working life
- Talk about how getting a job was a wake up call for him after his “cushy” three years as a student
- Say how none of his friends really understand what his job entails and how we all suspect he’s really a spy (like a really boring version of James Bond)
- Tell the story of the lads holiday we took after his first year at the company and how he got food poisoning on the last day and spent most of his first day back in the office toilet
Give him some credit
- Talk about how he’s a loyal friend who’s been a great source of support during hard times
- Talk about the time he used his annual bonus to pay for a big night out for all his friends to thank them for their generosity when he was a skint student
- Compliment him on his work ethic and the success he’s created for himself in life
Talk about the Bride
- Describe the time he introduced me to Caroline for the first time (and how I didn’t make the greatest impression on her)
- Tell the story of the holiday to Turkey where he invited her along and I got to know her properly (and had the chance to make a better impression)
- Talk about some of the personality improvements I’ve seen in Jason since he started dating Caroline
Raise a toast
- Wish them much happiness for the future
- Raise a toast to the couple
Step 5: Write Your First Draft
Once you’ve organised your speech ideas into a rough outline, it’s time to create the first full draft of your speech.
This isn’t so you can memorise the speech perfectly, but it helps you decide if the speech flows smoothly.
Write your speech out in long hand if you prefer but I find it easier to type it into your computer and move sections around as needed.
Start with an outline like the example given above and then start to expand each of the main points into sentences and paragraphs.
Tip: If you’re entering your speech on a computer and your software supports it consider using the dictation feature to create the first draft. It’s an effective way to write your speech in the same style that you speak.
Try not to agonise over the exact wording of each of the points. Your goal is just to get a rough version of your whole speech written down.
Once your speech is around the right length too long as fine consider doing some editing based on the following questions:
- Is each section of my speech roughly the same length or do some sections get too much attention and others not enough (i.e., it’s unbalanced)?
- Do the sections flow smoothly into one another or do I need to use more transitions (sentences or short paragraphs that link one idea to the next)?
- Is the overall structure effective or does it need a rethink?
Once you’ve finished this step you should have a full draft that, with some additional editing and polishing, you’d feel happy giving at the wedding.
Step 6: Practise, Revise and Repeat
Once you’ve completed your first rough draft, it’s time start practising your speech to see how it sounds and flows when spoken out loud.
You have a few different options during this stage of your speech preparation:
- You can just read the speech to yourself and see how it sounds.
- You can make more of a performance of it and practise in front of a mirror.
- You can film yourself on your smartphone and watch yourself back at your leisure (warning: watching yourself can feel awkward at first but the discomfort quickly fades!)
As you practice your speech out loud you’ll find that some sections flow better than others. You’ll realise that certain ways of phrasing certain sections are fine on the page but turn into tongue twisters when spoken.
Have a pencil to hand and make notes over any sections that need tweaking to make them easier to perform.
Note: You’ll need to “rinse and repeat” to evolve your speech into the finished version.
Once you’re fairly happy with your speech content, you can give your speech in front of a trusted friend or relative to get an external perspective (not the Groom though — his first exposure to your speech should be on the wedding day).
Getting feedback from someone else will help you understand if the parts you intend to be funny seem funny to other people too. Ask them to be candid about what works and what doesn’t.
Note: Time yourself to get an idea of how long the speech will last. Add an extra 20% to allow for audience reaction and the possibility of being more verbose when giving your speech for real.
Once you’re happy with you speech there’s no need to memorise it word for word. You can always summarise the main topics of speech using small cue cards and use those as a safety net on the big day.

How to write a great best man speech
Here is a short video with my thoughts and ideas on writing a great best man speech. I’ve expanded on those ideas below to give as much advice, hints and tips on writing a really great speech. Enjoy!
Many best men race to get that first funny line in there, and usually at the expense of quality. Keep it warm, funny and never edgy.
1. Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, for those who of you I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting yet, my name is Chris and I am officially Paul’s second best man…second best ladies and gentlemen…nobody likes to be second best do they? Well, Paul, looking at his career, he should know better than most…anyway where were we?
2. Good evening ladies and gentlemen before I begin I’d just like to introduce myself: my name is Chris and it is my very great honour and privilege to be the first of Mark’s two Best Man…we had to split it…46 years is quite a long time to cover all in one go! Over the course of the next few minutes I’ll be taking you through Mark’s sporting heroics, dealing with incredible loss and being caned by people dressed as nuns…which in fact had nothing to do with the stag do
3. Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen, over the next few minutes we’ll be talking about the man for whom Scottish Independence now means asking his English wife if he can go to the pub at the weekend. I can’t help but thinking that an English woman telling a Scottish man he can’t go to the pub, would be a new low in this country’s rich cultural history.
4. Over the next few minutes I’ll be taking you on the rollercoaster ride that has been Sean’s life to date, and there are some amazing stories; like the time he was playing A ball with David Cameron in Mexico and his dog ate the Prime Minister’s guinea pig and he had to sell my passport to repair his own nose…actually I’ve known Sean 30 years…I might have muddled a few things up there…
AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT NOT TO DO….
Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, before I begin I would just like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to those of you I haven’t yet met. My name is Dave, and this Bob, and together it is our very great pleasure and privilege to be Colin’s best men for today’s celebrations.
At this point I thought I would be nervous at doing Leigh’s speech but I am now looking forward to ripping him a new arse hole in front of all his family and friends and better yet he has to sit there quietly.
This is the most puzzling part because unless you’re a seasoned speech writer, why should you have idea about structure? There are a few ways to tackle this, but the best idea is to keep things simple and form a logical progression from one piece to the next, don’t let the timeline jump around, don’t confuse the audience, and don’t cover topics or people multiple times.
Talk about being the best man
Now you’ve got to get from the introduction into the main part of the speech and this is the bridge, and in many ways the trickiest part of the whole speech, particularly if you’re trying to link everything together. Again, simple is good – don’t make the guests think too hard!
1.Over the next few minutes I will be guiding you though what amounts to one great big cry for help: Paul’s life. The inglorious acting career, the ridiculous hair, owning a ridiculous car, the persistent alcoholic over indulgence and drunken profane outbursts – he was quite simply South West London’s answer to David Hasselhof…just not as successful.
Neil is a special friend and special friends deserve one thing: three stag dos. The weekends of Istanbul, London and Leeds will live long in the memory of not just those who went, but also those who read about us in the national papers. The mass chants of ‘feed the snake! Feed the snake!’ and the enduring company of our new best friend Bianca the stripper are, I have to say, completely unrelated. I would also like to say that for the record Brian accepts and welcomes people from every country around the globe. Almost. AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT NOT TO DO….
Now a wise man once told me the best man speech should last as long as it takes for the groom to make love…So thank you everyone for coming
Firstly, I would just like to say how beautiful the bridesmaids look who have only been out shone by the bride herself, who looks amazing today.
If everyone could be upstanding, and raise a glass, know as some of you may know Kerry wanted to have the wedding a lot earlier than this, so that a certain something could be involved in the wedding, and unfortunately after a long and hard fight that couldn’t happen. I am of course talking about mikes rapidly thinning hairline, you will be sadly missed.
How you know the groom
This comes directly after the bridge and establishes a connection with the audience – they can immediately understand why you’re there, what you mean to the groom and it’s always an opportunity to have some fun with it, especially if you’re a brother!
- My first mistake was going to stay in the shared house in London where he lived. My second was to comment on the hair. As a glass bowl of pot pourri went sailing past my head and smashed behind me giving off a wonderful burst of sandalwood fragrance, I was given enough time to realize that this was a troubled, sensitive character who didn’t take criticism that well. Perfect friend material.
- I first properly met Nick way back in 1994 when we started secondary school together. Little did we know it at the time but it was the start of a beautiful relationship, which, for me, EVENTUALLY proved worth pursuing years later when I was able to borrow all his notes and pass my A Levels. Of course, Nick didn’t need them because he might look quite cool now but he was in fact a complete square at school. The day when he could read without putting his finger on the word and then count without using his hands, were both real breakthrough moments in his life, only to be capped a few weeks later when he passed his driving test.
- I first met Brent when we attended the University of Texas and pledged a fraternity together. It was here amongst the upside down beer bongs, ritual humiliation and complete lack of sleep that I knew I had met a friend for life. This may sound overly emotional and slightly premature but when you discover your new buddy is packing his dad’s credit card with no limits, who wouldn’t want him as a friend for life? Just for the record Mr. Schakett, I know at times you may have been concerned about the amount of money Brent spent on alcohol and food on that card. You shouldn’t have: the Shot Man Schakett never wasted any of your money on food.
The trick to writing a really entertaining speech is to make the whole thing a story, rather than dragging the audience through endless stories. Recounting anecdotes is really hard to do because they require a lot of detail and all the time you’re getting to the punchline without making them laugh can prove really counterproductive. Of course, this can all pay off if you have a killer punchline, but all too frequently they aren’t that ‘killer’ and require you to have been there.
Instead take out the good bits from the stories and condense them, even embellish slightly into one neat burst of comedy…
1. Now as he embarked on adult life Nick was to learn the hard way just what it is to be a man, and the number one rule is: if you are going to offer to buy the drinks in happy hour, it’s best not to drop the entire lot down yourself as you get back to the table thus meaning you have to go and buy it all again just after happy hour’s finished. Also you should only ever do a runner from a restaurant via the roof if you HAVEN’T actually paid the bill. Leaving Prezzo’s this way one evening after settling up and leaving a good tip, still doesn’t make any sense to anyone.
2. Anyway when Mark wasn’t failing to hit the top spot in the classroom he was also finding it difficult to do that on the sports field as well. However, with a modest talent and even less interest, he did the only sensible thing to do: saved up all his skill and enthusiasm for one split second of genius. Quite how he managed to catch the impossible cricket ball as it left our sports master’s bat, is still completely unknown. But with, uncharacteristic razor sharp reactions and gazelle like agility, he did just that, and won his side the match. Literally seconds after this Mark retired from all forms of competitive sport – at the very top of his game.
3. There weren’t many highlights to being on minimum wage in the frozen section of nobody’s favourite supermarket, in fact if I remember rightly, there was only one. Nick had been asked to use his initiative to dispose of a 2 litre tub of chocolate ice cream – no big deal you might think. Well, Nick decides to take it into the staff toilets and empty it into the loo. Ladies and gentlemen, a big tub of melting chocolate ice cream can make a big impression when poured into a toilet and can only ever give the next person in there the wrong idea. And it did. From then on half the people thought he had dodgy guts the rest thought he ate on the toilet. Both of which, are in fact, true.
These are ripe areas for comedy material, and whilst you can hint at his accomplishments that should really come later in the speech, when it all gets a bit more meaningful. Of course, the disasters aren’t real disasters just areas of his life and social situations he’s got catastrophically wrong…for comedy effect.
It wasn’t all academic and sporting mediocrity though, there have been lots of other things he wasn’t good at too. Forget school discos and trying to speak to girls, Mark had computers eating out of his hand. And it’s easy to see why: with computers you can eventually work out what’s bothering them, they usually only ever break down for legitimate reasons and if you get fed up with them, you can just switch them off. You see, nothing made his heart beat harder or his mind race faster than a computer with a problem. It is a love affair that has endured to this day.
The impact the bride has had on the groom
This should be a fun look at the way the groom as upped his game, changed his wardrobe and started showing an interest in things outside of pubs, football and waking up late.
1. But when he’s not trying to track the dark forces behind his least favourite football club in the world, he also likes to go on holiday. Now going on holiday for Frank is nothing new but the way he goes about it now is very different from the Frank of old. Thanks to his beautiful new wife Emily, Frank now does something called globe trotting which actually involves going to lots of different far flung countries and immersing yourself in their culture, rather than a two hour flight and immersing yourself at the bar.
2. It’s always tricky that first stage of the relationship as you go about discovering whether it’s going to work or not. However, for Sean and Lucinda it was a lot trickier, as soon after he met her and became smitten, he had the romantic task of making her redundant. Sean was taking the old addage “if you love them set them free” to ridiculous conclusions, which resulted in Lucinda losing her job.
3. Cassie, can I just say that you look absolutely beautiful today, I think we can all agree Brent is one lucky guy. I always had a sneaking feeling that Brent was batting way above his average, now I know he is! I have seen over the years just how happy you both are together and I am so thrilled for Brent that he’s met such an amazing woman to share his life with. Also if you could find it in your big, warm heart to allow The Shot Man and that credit card to come out to play, then you would make some grown up, financially independent men, very happy too.
The wedding day really is only about one person, and even though the Best Man Speech should mainly be about the groom, the bride does of course have her part in it as well.
The thing to remember here is, that unless you live in Australia, the best man always goes last, and so the groom will already have extensively talked about how they met. You’re really looking to avoid repetition, so allude generally to how they met, and I’d avoid details…and if they met online and aren’t advertising the fact, then you shouldn’t either.
1. Seriously when Mark met you Emily, everyone could see just how happy that made him. He’s always been a great bloke waiting for the right girl and everyone who knows you both will tell you just what a great couple you are together. Mark I couldn’t be happier for you today, we’ve known each other such a long time and I hope that friendship lasts for many more years to come.
2. Ali, I know you make Neil incredibly happy – you must do, he’s stopped dressing like a middle aged freak. But seriously, you both make a great couple and I know that he’ll already have the next few years planned out on spreadsheets but if you can fit me in I’ll look forward to spending a lot happier times together.
3. The fact that Dave also looked like Kevin Keegan’s love child, also didn’t help his dating days. That was until that fateful night, on the last train from London when he met the lovely Katie and smooth talked her after another mate of ours offered her a complimentary chicken nugget, and the rest is history. In a world, which looks down upon fast food, I think we all need to think again.
4. I can see how incredibly happy you have made my old friend over these last eight years and just how much you have helped to change his life for the better. He’s always been a great guy buy now he has wider horizons and a greater sense of adventure. And I know just how much of a support you’ve been to him through the tough times. I think you are a great couple and I look forward to many more happy times together in the future.
There should really be only one toast in a best man speech and that’s at the very end. Tradition states that best men should reply on behalf of the bridesmaids at the beginning of the speech in response to the bridesmaids toast by the groom – but it’s just confusing and not necessary. A simple but effective toast at the end and you’re done.
All that remains for me is to wish you all a long and happy life together, with all the luck in the world.
Ladies and gentlemen, the bride and groom.
This is where you tie all the strands together, and say what a great friend/brother the groom is, how much he’s been there for you through difficult times, laughed with you through the good times, and always had your back….and if he hasn’t…just lie!
1. John, you have been a good friend to me ever since we first met, and not just in the form of free shots and hosting parties. We’ve had great times going to the games, hanging out and making that journey from college to adult life. I know there will be less time for me in your life as I’ve now been replaced by a small dog called Ben, but you’re catholic, and now you’re married – I can’t see that dog getting a look in for months anyway. However, I will always look forward to the time we spend together especially when for old time’s sake the Shot Man is once again unleashed. Thanks for being trustworthy, loyal and understanding friends and I hope to spend many more times together for many more years to come…maybe also with that doctor wife you promised me Julie.
2. With your laidback, calm and sensitive approach to life Frank, you’re somebody that many people count themselves lucky to have in their lives. Not just because of your willingness and ability to help them out as a friend but because you’re fun and light hearted ways mean you’re always a great guy to be around.
3. I am so happy that you’ve found each other to share your lives with and all that remains for me to say is that I hope you have a great day today and enjoy a long and happy life together.
4. Sam, we’ve known each other for such a long time and been through such a lot together that it’s hard to know where to begin. All I can say is that I couldn’t have wished for a better bloke to share those years with and I hope that there’s going to be plenty more of them to come. Thanks for being a great friend, and thanks for letting me copy your homework.
Other things to consider
From a vast amount of experience you should avoid using props at all costs. It might seem like a great idea to have films, photos, a man in a gimp suit taking the heat off you in a pressurised situation, but it only ever serves to make the day a lot trickier and the speech less effective. As soon as you start holding up pictures or invite people to look at pictures you’ve left on the table they will immediately stop looking at you and start zoning out or talking amongst themselves.
If you give anyone the opportunity to divert their gaze you then have to work really hard to get it back again, and props will only ever make your speech longer and more tedious to endure. They also usually rely heavily on cables, Bluetooth connections, wifi etc etc…or at the very least everyone being able to see what you’re holding up…and they never can. Suddenly you’re getting heckles about not being able to see/hear/understand and it makes the speech the longest 10 minutes of your life.
A great idea if you’ve got funny photographs is to pin them up by the seating plan so that everyone will get to see them and then you can reference those in your speech.
Forget the awful quotes that you normally hear such as ‘it’s not somebody you can live with, it’s somebody you can’t live without, there are some great quotes out there if you look hard enough. Just one for each speech as you don’t want it to become some sort of English Literature GCSE essay.
The greatest gift of life is friendship, and I have received it. - Hubert Humphrey
There is nothing on this earth more to be prized than true friendship. - Thomas Aquinas.
Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: ‘What! You too? I thought I was the only one. - AA Milne.
Think where man’s glory most begins and ends, and say my glory was I had such friends. - WB Yeats.
Quotes can be a really powerful way to end a speech, and it’s worth going that extra mile to find something that very few have used before, so check out sites such as BrainyQuote and GoodReads for an endless supply of great quotes.
You are always going to get a heckler or two so it’s worth thinking in advance how to deal with them so they don’t upset your flow, and even better, give you an opportunity to get some extra laughs. The most simple method is just to pause, wait until they’re done and carry on, but if you can get a bit of mileage out of it, so much the better.
A good way of having some fun is simply to ask if they’re looking for assistance in going to the bathroom, this works particularly well if they happen to be on the slightly older side. If it’s a younger person you can assume some vocal surprise that their carers have let them out for the day, or suggest that whatever medication the system has got them on, they need to cut the dose. Anything along this sort of gentle fun vein, always works a treat…as long as they don’t really have a carer and aren’t on medication.
In my experience best man jokes are probably the least effective addition to any best man speech that wants to be classed as superior. By best man jokes, I am alluding to about 100 or so gags that were written over the years specifically to get a laugh from wedding guests. You can do so much better than these, because they’re old, tired an dpeople have heard them all before and the last thing you want to do is land one of these at the start of your speech to a luke warm ripple of polite laughter.
To identify exactly what I’m talking about I’ve listed some of the most prolific offenders.
It’s an emotional wedding, even the cake is in tiers.
It’s not the first time today I’ve got up form a warm seat with a piece of paper in my hand.
If there’s anybody here this afternoon who’s feeling nervous, apprehensive and queasy at the thought of what lies ahead, it’s probably because you have just got married to the groom.
Complete rubbish. You need to work out what it is that’s funny about the groom in an original and engaging way, people will love your creativity and laugh much more!
Burning deep within his sole was a dream, what he wanted more than anything, more than being a cowboy, professional tennis player or A ball star…was to be an office manager in the NHS. What can I say? He’s not dreaming any more ladies and gentlemen.
This is one of the most important factors and it actually depends on quite a few things, so we’ll start off with the very general scenario of 3 speakers at a wedding – Father of the bride, Groom and Best Man. If this is the case and it’s in the UK, then the best man speech should be a stand up to sit down time of no longer than 10 minutes. If this is in America, that will be about 5 minutes maximum. Americans like their speeches shorter and more efficient, and that’s no bad thing.
However, these timings will then change the more speakers that are added to the line up, because what the groom should be doing is making sure the section of speeches doesn’t run into hours of your life you’ll never get back. If there are 4 speakers, aim to be in and out in around 8 minutes, 5 speakers you’re looking at about 6 minutes, and so it goes on.
You have to bear in mind also that as you’ll be the last speaker, apart from Australia where you’re up second, and so the guests are at the limit of their concentration endurance, so if they’ve been sitting through 90 minutes of speeches, and it happens, make it REALLY funny, and REALLY short.
If you are two best men making a joint speech then you should be stood for about 12-13 minutes, and that remains the case the more best men are added to the line up. If you’re a co-best man and you’re making separate speeches, then your speech should be about 7 minutes. The timings in Australia are identical to the UK except that the best man goes after the father of the bride.
Joint best man
Being a joint best man is pretty common these days, and you really need to tackle what you’re going to go about things as early as possible, because trying to coordinate two guys to write and deliver a speech whilst they juggle their own lives can prove next to impossible.
The first thing you have to decide is if you’re going to make a joint speech or separate ones. The best method is to make a joint speech as it means you won’t double up on gags or content, and nobody has that last dreaded speech spot. A great joint best man speech should consist of about 4 chunks of content each and you bounce from one best man to other all the way through the speech.
However, for many reasons making a joint speech might prove impossible. Maybe there’s no time to coordinate it, maybe you don’t like the guy, or maybe there’s a fundamental clash of ideas. In that case make sure your speech is efficient, tight and punchy and comes in at around 7 minutes, and whatever you do, make sure you get on first.
Quite a lot of grooms make their brother the best man, and that does throw up a few problems – the main one being that although you’ve grown up in the same family/house etc. you don’t really know that much about him! When I’m writing speeches, this doesn’t really affect the creative process because I’m looking for a very funny comedic overview of who the groom is, not a granular introspection. If you’re facing this very common problem, then just take everything you know about his character, passion, dislikes, job and even hair colour and get the funnies out of that. It can be done but it really needs thinking about.
Of course, there is some fun to be had with the introduction and you need to allude to that fact how upset you were when your number priority spot was completely usurped by a noisy, ugly ginger baby called Dave. If you’re younger than talk about the time you realised the bigger toddler in the house who kept bashing you over the head every time your mum left the room, was in fact your older brother Steve.
Former Girlfriends
As tempting as it may seem to have a quick chronological run through of the groom’s former loves, this will only ever end in disaster. This comes back to my point that the wedding day is really only about the bride – if you do anything to upset her, then it’s pretty terminal. Mentioning former conquests in any way shape or form is something I completely avoid, you might think it’s all light hearted fun but no bride likes to think of their brand new husband being the love interest of someone else!

Inspiring Best Man Speech Examples
A best man speech to the ultimate single inspiring couple.
First up, we have an example of a pretty simple, straight-to-the-point best man speech. It’s light in tone, offers excellent praise for both the bride and groom, and has a great closing.
“Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen!
For those of you who don’t know me, my name is _____ (your name), and I have the honor of being ____’s (groom’s name) best man. I have known him since we were kids, and I have seen him grow into the amazing person he is today. Looking at him getting married today seems surreal because it feels like yesterday when we were kids, doing the most embarrassing things possible; don’t worry, I will not tell anyone about it. ?
We all know the accomplishments of (groom’s name) but what you guys don’t know is that he is an invaluable friend. He is the kind of person who asks you how your day was and would be a great listener. He is someone you can lean on, who answers the phone when you’re having one of the lowest moments of your life or pick you up at 3 in the morning to drive you back home safely without any questions. Thank you (groom’s name) for being the best friend I could ask for. And I believe that you will excel at your role as a husband as well.
(Bride’s name), I must say you look beautiful today. Over the time of our friendship, I have never seen (groom’s name) so happy. You make him a better version of himself, and it is because of you, we always see him with a goofy smile on his face. In marrying this joker, you are getting a kind and passionate, considerate, and fun-loving husband. He is a great friend, and I can’t even imagine how great of a husband he will be.
Thank you for being the most fantastic couple and being the ultimate inspiration for all of us singles out here! I wish you both prosperity in the years to come.
Let’s toast to this beautiful couple!”
The Absolute Best Man Speech
Wow! This is the best, best man speech we have ever seen and delivered by the bride’s brother, that also just happens to be the groom’s best friend. It is filled with laughter, praise, memories, and heartfelt sentiments. From beginning to end, it is the BEST! Oh, and if you think you need some tips on “ how to deliver a great best man speech ,” watch this and takes notes. He is a great public speaker.
Heartfelt Best Man Speech With A Touch Of Humor
“Hello everyone! May I have your attention, please!
As many of you already know me, and those who don’t, I am ___ (your name), the groom’s best friend. Before I begin, here’s a heads up, I asked (groom’s name) before writing this speech if there was anything that I shouldn’t say, and he said no. So if I spill the beans today, it is all his fault.
(Bride’s name) you look radiant today, the most gorgeous bride I have ever seen, so sad that you have to spend all your life with this guy, after all, I am the best man here today, right? I can’t even imagine the embarrassing moments he will bring into your life.
Alright, alright, before (groom’s name) kills me, I should stop goofing around! In all seriousness, (bride’s name) by marrying (groom’s name), you are getting a husband who is kind and compassionate, who will not only be a great husband but a best friend who will be there for you at each step of the way. In you, he has found the love of his life, which shouldn’t be a surprise for anyone because you are the most tender-hearted woman I have ever seen. And I know that you will make the best wife for (groom’s name). I can see in (groom’s name)’s eyes how much he loves you, the kind of love that keeps growing every single day.
(groom’s name) you have always pushed me to be the better person, and seeing you today becoming the man you are and starting a family with this lovely lady is so inspiring to me. In (bride’s name), you have found your ideal match, but I must admit she might be a bit more fun and sensible than you are! Well, jokes apart! I wish you both the best in your new life together.
Let us all raise our glasses to the new Mr. and Mrs. (both of their names) and wish them a long and beautiful married life!”
Killer Best Man Speech Filled With Humor & The Best Toast Ever!!
Wow! This speech is a great one! The groom’s younger brother is the best man, and he delivers a funny speech full of heartfelt feelings and one of the best wedding toasts we’ve ever heard. Watch until the end.
Best Man Is Superman & Groom Is His Kryptonite
“Of course, my name is Joe, and I’d like to thank Ben for finally confirming that I am indeed his best man, after 19 years of best-friendship.
Best friends for 19 years. Just think about what was happening 19 years ago. Lance Armstrong won his first Tour de France. Furbabies were the craze of a nation. Brad Pitt was named the sexiest man alive.
On behalf of the bridesmaids and groomsmen, I would like to thank Ben and Shannon for including us on their unforgettable day. What a fantastic day it has been so far, and so much of Shannon’s hard work and preparation has gone into it. Ben, you just sit there and enjoy yourself.
Speaking of the bridesmaids, aren’t they looking fantastic? Thank you, girls, for making sure that Shannon looks as beautiful as ever and that she made it here on time. For anyone who knows Shannon, that is an achievement in itself.
A bit about Ben and I, we first met in elementary school and I’m not sure why we initially became friends as he doesn’t really like sport whereas I could watch a ping-pong match on TV. After that, it was probably Pokémon cards, and he had a Charizard I wanted, but over the years, the more I’ve got to know him, the more I’ve realized how much of a businessman he is. I’m expecting an invoice for the food we’ve enjoyed today.
After we moved from elementary school, we got split up and didn’t really speak before finding each other again in college – how romantic! It was here that we’d master the art of plagiarism. Well, at least I would. Ben got caught copying a classmate’s work. What let him down, you ask? He didn’t even change the name on the footer.
Another one of my favorite memories during college was in 2009. We had a riding lawnmower, rope, and horse feed bags to play with. I ended up dressing Ben up in horse feed bags and pulling him around the field for 20 mins, like a budget version of Jackass.
As life progressed, Ben left college to start work, and I stayed on, so again we lost contact through no fault on either part until a few years later where we reconciled and have remained as close as we’ve ever been since. It sounds like a story about how a stray dog kept finding his way home, doesn’t it?
In all honesty, if I’m Superman, Ben is my kryptonite. I’ve got a lot to thank Ben for, mainly for his help building my confidence with other people, specifically women. I know this is something he likes to brag about, but it’s true. As kids who were both a little on the chubby side of life, Ben gave the best piece of advice on girls that anyone has ever given me. “It’s ok to be fat; you’ve just got to be fat and funny. The more they’re laughing, the less time they have their eyes open”. I’ll take this piece of advice to my grave.
Ben. – *face Ben* – I would like to think that in the times when you have called upon me for help, I have always been there for you and not let you down because you have always been there for me. I look back at some of the stuff we have done together, and it makes me proud to have a mate like you. We have had some truly great times and have shared some great experiences together, memories I will never forget. I have been honored to have been your best man and want you to know that I look up to you more than you could imagine. Just remember, love is like a circle; it goes on forever. It’s not like a triangle; triangles have corners. It’s like a circle.
Ladies and gentlemen, it truly has been an honor delivering this speech to you, so please, join me in raising your glasses to the happy couple!”
A Truly Inspirational Best Man Speech, Oh! And it Doesn’t Hurt Shawn Johnson’s The Bride.
Brother of the groom and best man shares many stories of growing up, emergency room visits, and other memories that brothers experience together. But then he shares how much he is proud of the groom and how much he inspires him in life. A great example of a best man speech with few nerves, even though the bride is a celebrity (Shawn Johnson, the Olympic Gymnast).
A Humble Best Man Speech With Witt & Style
When you’re a witty yet humble guy, it can be hard to put together a best man speech that is sentimental and humble but still includes a little humor. This is an excellent example of all those things combined.
“Good evening, ladies, gentlemen, and single ladies. In case you are wondering, I am indeed the footloose and fiancé-free Best Man. Paul, I’m glad to have you ruled out as competition finally. In fact, my feelings are shared in the lyrics of the famous Queen song ‘Another One Bites the Dust.’ But, honestly. I couldn’t be more proud to stand here today with my best friend watching him become a husband and family man. Man, am I honored.
Paul and I have done many things together during our almost life-long friendship. Over the years, we’ve built go-carts together, rode our bikes together, played football together, bunked school together, tried to chat up girls together – note the word “tried” there – fixed up cars together, occasionally got drunk together, and now we are sharing a top table together.
And like all friends, we’ve certainly had our downs as well as our ups. I remember back to times when a petty argument would arise from nowhere. Then Paul would call me smelly, and I’d call him ‘big ears.’ And then it would spiral out of all proportion, and we’d each end up running home in tears. But sure enough, the next day, Paul would drop me an email from work, and we’d make up. As good mates do, however old.
But it was particularly in our teenage years that these little spats became quite frequent and would often arise over a young lady. They’d generally be of the ‘I saw her first, ‘no, I did’ variety. I’d like to say we worked these disputes out equitably, but Paul was the smooth-talking, early-developer of the two of us, and he genuinely believed he could have any girl he pleased. Unfortunately for him, though, he never managed to please any.
Until that is, he met his lovely bride. Since then, I’ve never known him to be happier. And, considering he’s now spending less time hanging out at bars and less time on the golf course, it’s certainly a testament to the way he feels about Linda.
Now, as Paul’s chief golf partner and drinking buddy, it’s not that great for me. But I’m man enough to stand here today and tell you that I don’t resent it. And how could I when I see how very happy they are together?
And I, as much as all of you, want that happiness for myself. But, uh, sorry, I mean, I want their happiness to last forever. And I do.
Ladies and gentlemen, on a final and serious note, please be upstanding and raise your glasses to my very best friend and his beautiful new wife. To Paul and Linda.”
Best Man Embarrasses Bride In A Friendly Roast
This is how you write, deliver and kill a best man speech in under 5 minutes. The best man and groomsmen had a completely unique idea for a wedding speech, and it is GREAT! This is a must-watch and recreate if you want a funny and memorable best man speech. Oh, and 1.7 million views isn’t half bad.
Heartfelt And Personal
Every best man speech doesn’t have to include funny or embarrassing stories. In this best man speech, we love how he kept it simple and to the point.
“Good afternoon, everyone; I am Mitchell. You may not know me, but Lucas and I go way back, all the way to preschool, in fact. And I must say that we have been brothers from another mother, locked in mischief together since the very start.
But despite some of our best efforts, this beautiful day has gone off without a hitch. A special thanks to everyone who worked hard and came together to make today possible. I have a few loving words to read from well-wishers who could attend today (read off messages sent from people who could not attend).
Well, I must agree! Their kind words are absolutely right. Lucas is a heck of a guy. I guess I first realized that on the day we met. There he was, already in our Pre-K room, doing his best to fit in.
He always was a little awkward when meeting new people, at least of the female sex. That was until he met Melanie. And thank goodness for that. Lucas, I hate to tell you this, but I have seen a few of your ex-girlfriends over the years, and I can certainly attest that the best woman won out. Or at least the most beautiful and kind, at any rate. Doesn’t Melanie look stunning today? And I must say, the bridesmaids do as well. If you are interested, I am footless & fiance-free. Ask for my number after this is over.
I would like to offer you both a tiny bit of advice today as you start this new adventure in life together. Lucas always treats Melanie like the queen and angel that she is. And Melanie always remembers that Lucas loves you and could not get through life without you. Seriously, I have seen and been with him when he’s without you. And it was a mess.
But, seriously, I wish you both a life full of love, peace, faith, and prosperity. You are both the nearest and dearest friends. Your life together is sure to be an unbelievable and fantastic new chapter that we will all be blessed to witness. So, now, please join me to give a toast to Lucas and Melanie.”

I know one important thing about Beckie. She has made Jose happier than I have ever seen him. So today is a day filled with joy and happiness. When it comes to giving a best man speech, preparation is key. Here are some tips on how to prepare for your best man speech.
Researching and Planning Your Speech
First, it’s important to do your research and plan your speech ahead of time. Start by brainstorming ideas for your speech, including any jokes or anecdotes you might want to include.
Think about the couple and what they mean to you, and try to incorporate those feelings into your speech.
You can also find inspiration from best man speech templates and examples online. Just make sure to personalize the speech to the couple and avoid using generic or overused quotes.
Writing Your Speech
Once you have a general idea of what you want to say, it’s time to start writing your speech. Keep it short and sweet, aiming for a speech that is between three and five minutes long.
Begin with a strong opening line that captures the audience’s attention and congratulates the couple on their special day.
Express gratitude and show appreciation to the groom for choosing you as his best man.
You can thank the bride and groom for inviting you to be part of their special day and express how much it means to you to be standing up there with them.
Rehearsing Your Speech
Finally, it’s important to practice your speech ahead of time to build confidence and ensure a smooth delivery.
Practice in front of a mirror or with a friend, and time yourself to make sure your speech fits within the allotted time frame.
Remember to speak slowly and clearly, and use pauses for emphasis. Don’t forget to incorporate humor and jokes, but make sure they are appropriate and not offensive.
With these tips in mind, you’ll be well on your way to delivering a heartfelt and memorable best man speech at the wedding reception.
Delivering Your Speech
When it comes to delivering your best man speech, there are a few things to keep in mind to make sure it’s a memorable and enjoyable experience for all.
Here are some tips and ideas to help you deliver a great best man speech.
Making a Strong Opening
Your opening line is crucial for setting the tone of your speech and engaging your audience.
Consider starting with a joke, a quote, or a personal anecdote that relates to the newlyweds or the theme of the wedding.
A magnetic opening line will grab the attention of the guests and set the stage for the rest of your speech.
Engaging Your Audience
Engaging your audience is key to keeping them interested in your speech. Keep your speech short and sweet, and avoid controversial topics or anything that may offend the guests.
Share stories and anecdotes that are both humorous and sentimental, and include inside jokes that the wedding party will appreciate.
Sharing Stories and Anecdotes
Sharing stories and anecdotes about the groom is a great way to connect with the audience and show your relationship with him.
Talk about past experiences, college memories, and past relationships that shaped the groom into the man he is today.
Be sure to keep your stories appropriate and respectful, and avoid embarrassing the groom or the bride.
Offering Words of Wisdom
Offering words of wisdom is a great way to express your congratulations and well wishes to the newlyweds.
Share advice on marriage, love, and relationships, and offer your support and encouragement for their future together.
Raising a Glass and Proposing a Toast
Raising a glass and proposing a toast is the perfect way to end your best man speech. Express your gratitude to the newlyweds, compliment the bride, and raise a glass to their happiness and future together.
Keep your toast short and sweet, and be sure to practice it beforehand so you can deliver it with confidence.
Remember to plan ahead, practice your speech, and be yourself. Follow a best man speech template or speech outline to help you stay on track, and don’t be afraid to include a famous quote or poem that relates to the theme of the wedding.

10 Steps to Giving the Best, Best Man Speech
At some point in your life, one of your buddies or your brother will probably ask you to be the best man in his wedding. This is a great honor. One of the duties of a best man is to give a speech wherein you say a few kind words about your friend/brother and his new wife. If you’ve been to many weddings, you know that oftentimes best man speeches can quickly devolve into an awkward, drunken spectacle. The mixture of booze and lack of preparation results in the best man rambling and sharing inappropriate and embarrassing stories about the groom in front of hundreds of family and friends.
If you don’t want to make yourself look like a real ignoramus, and you want to truly be the best man, here are a few pointers to keep in mind as you prepare to give your speech.
Note: We originally published this article over 10 years ago and since that time we’ve gotten hundreds of emails and letters from best men sharing how our guide to the best man speech helped them deliver a speech that got compliments from not only the bride and groom, but also from everyone else at the wedding. This guide is battled tested and works.
1. Prepare. Don’t walk into the wedding reception thinking you’ll know exactly what to say when you get there. If you have a few weeks before the wedding, start mulling over some ideas for the speech. Begin brainstorming and jotting down thoughts, stories, jokes, and quotes you might want to use. If you don’t know a lot about how your buddy and his wife met, ask. Think of stories from you and your buddy’s past that show what a great guy he is. The goal of the speech is to celebrate the couple and make them look good.
2. Stay sober. Sure, you want to enjoy yourself, and yes, alcohol may help take the edge off of giving a speech in front of hundreds of strangers; they don’t call alcohol liquid confidence for nothing. But make sure you’re not sloppy drunk when you give your speech. You don’t want to be completely uninhibited or you might say something you’ll regret later on. Besides, a man doesn’t need a crutch to help him tackle a challenge. Be man enough to postpone your own gratification until after the speech is completed.
3. Open by expressing gratitude. Thank all the people who made the day possible. Single out the bride and groom’s parents by name, and offer a toast to them for not only putting on the wedding but for raising two fine people. Thank the guests for coming.
4. Tell a story–make a connection. The ideal way to structure a best man speech is to find a connection between a story about your friend and your support for the couple. Share a story about how your friend would always lament that he would never find a woman with x,y, and z qualities, but how he finally did in his new bride. Or tell a story about the moment when you were hanging out with the couple and you realized your friend had found his match. Another good angle is to talk about the way that the bride and groom balance one another. Relate a funny (not embarrassing, see below) anecdote in which one of your buddy’s personality traits tripped him up in some way. For example, the story could be about how your friend is very shy and how this shyness caused some humorous event to occur. You then talk about how bubbly and outgoing his bride is, and how they therefore balance each other and make a perfect team.
5. Avoid controversial topics. Keep your speech on topics that aren’t controversial, offensive, or embarrassing. You would think this is common sense, but people somehow forget this when they’re standing with a microphone in their hand in front of a crowd of people. What gets people in trouble is attempting to be funny by sharing some embarrassing story or cracking some lame joke about a ball and chain. It usually comes out horribly and no one laughs. It’s okay to share a humorous anecdote, but not one that gets laughs at the expense of your friend and his new wife and embarrasses them and their guests.
Don’t talk about the groom’s past relationships, don’t tell people what you really thought of your buddy’s wife when you first met her, don’t slam the food, don’t make comments about “looking forward to the honeymoon” while winking at the bride–basically, just use some tact and common sense.
6. Avoid inside jokes. I hate when people do this in small groups. I hate it even more when people do it in front of larger groups. If you want to keep people’s attention, save the inside jokes for when it’s just you and your friend.
7. Keep it short. Nothing irritates people more than some rambling drunk going on and on and on. People have probably already listened to the maid of honor and the bride’s father give their spiel. By the time they get to you, the crowd is ready to eat cake and get on with it. Shoot for no more than five minutes.
8. End with a quote. An easy way to end is by using a quote that wraps the speech up nicely. In “How Do You Know When She’s the One?” I shared the quote my father-in-law used at my wedding. You can’t go wrong with it: “Marriage is not about finding a person you can live with, it’s about finding the person you can’t live without.” After that you can simply say, “My friend has found that person.” The End.
9. Raise your glass and propose a toast. Raise your glass and say something to the effect of: “Here’s to a lifetime of happiness and love for ____ and ____!”
10. Remember to be yourself. No need to get formal or try to be someone you’re not. And there’s no need to follow these instructions exactly either. Simply use them as a guide and be yourself. Let it flow naturally. Use your natural voice and mannerisms. Make it personal and sincere and say things from the heart and you should be golden.
Here’s your crib sheet:
1. Open by thanking those who made the day possible–end the intro with saying “Thank you to all those who have made it here today.”
2. Transition to your speech: “I am especially glad to be here on this occasion to celebrate this wonderful day with my friend/brother.”
3. Talk about how you know the groom, why you’re grateful for having him as your friend, and why he’s such an upstanding guy.
4. Share a story about your friend and connect it to the couple.
5. Raise your glass and ask everyone to join in a toast to the happy couple.
6. Let out a sigh of relief.

How to Write—And Deliver—The Perfect Wedding Speech

If one of your nearest and dearest is tying the knot, it’s possible you may be asked to give a speech during the wedding festivities. And while having an opportunity to share your love and memories at a major milestone event is an honor, there’s no denying that it’s a big ask—especially if public speaking isn’t your forté. A wedding speech presents a unique challenge: There’s no set formula for how the speech should play out, but it often requires sentimentality, a touch of humor, and the good sense to know when to wrap it up.
Are you a member of the wedding party that wants to (or has been asked to) give a toast at an upcoming celebration? Read ahead to learn how to write and prepare for your big moment.
Who Gives a Wedding Speech?
First off, it’s important to make sure that the couple definitely wants you to give a toast at their celebrations. Traditionally, the maid of honor, best man, and parents of the couple will give a speech at the wedding. However, the couple should explicitly ask these guests well in advance to give a speech so they have plenty of time to prepare. They may also choose additional wedding party members to give toasts at the reception or pre-wedding parties; but if the couple has not asked you to give a speech, do not prepare one. Speeches are carefully placed into a wedding timeline so the day will stay on schedule, and an additional five minutes could cut into strategically timed moments of the celebration.
The to-be-weds also have the right to curate the day as they wish, and occasionally at a rehearsal dinner or welcome party, the couple may open the floor to additional toasts. But if this doesn’t happen, grabbing the mic unexpectedly for an off-the-cuff speech (especially after a few glasses of wine) will not be appreciated.
How to Write a Wedding Speech
If you are asked to give a toast, it’s important that you don’t just wing it. “First, recognize that speechwriting is a creative process,” shares Allison Shapira, founder and CEO of Global Public Speaking . “Give yourself plenty of time to be creative (i.e. not the night before, when you already have so much to stress about). Wait for your most creative time of the day, and turn off any distractions. Spend some unrushed time thinking about your relationship to the couple, and what you’d like to say.”
While there’s no exact template to follow, there is a good basic formula to adhere to. “The framework I recommend for a wedding speech is: story, message, blessing,” she shares. “Tell a heartwarming story, share the message or value behind that story, and then offer a blessing or wish for the couple based on that message.”
“Typically, we advise our speakers to try to bring the audience on a journey where you initially try to make them laugh, then get to the real depth of the speech and earn some tears, then bring the whole speech full circle with a deep insight or story about the couple that ends with a funny final punch,” shares Steven Greitzer, CEO and founder of Provenance , an AI company that specializes in helping write personalized wedding vows, ceremonies, and toasts. “It’s important to have a good balance of humor and sentimentality because, if it’s a full roast, it can feel like you’re just doing a standup comedy show for your own benefit and it could lack substance. Or, if it’s too overly emotional, it can get heavy and perhaps a bit too somber for a wedding celebration.”
When choosing a story, Shapira recommends reading the room. “It should obviously be good-natured, without making anyone look bad. And, it all depends on the family dynamics,” she says. “What one family considers good-natured, another family could consider scathing. Choose someone in the audience whom you think could give you some helpful feedback, and practice the speech with them in advance.”
Greitzer adds that it's important that both members of the couple are highlighted in the speech. “Great anecdotes showcase who each person was before meeting, their synergy together, and their individual and collective growth,” he shares. If you don’t know one member of the couple very well, don’t be afraid to get creative. “One of the best speeches I’ve seen was from a bridesmaid who hadn’t really been able to spend too much time with her best friend’s fiance because of the pandemic,” Greitzer shares. “She creatively read texts she found in her phone that gave her a hilarious timeline of her friend falling in love.”
If you’re still not sure where to begin, consider giving an AI platform a try to help you form your toast. “The Provenance tools guide speakers to create unique, and personal ceremonies, vows, and toasts without the stress. It’s a partner in your brainstorming process; a way to help you verbalize what you were trying to say—but faster,” explains Greitzer. “Instead of being some outdated, mad-libs-style template, the expert-curated prompts inspire special stories and insights, ultimately weaving your responses together into a custom, editable first draft.”
A final writing tip from Shapira? “I definitely recommend creating an outline but do not recommend writing the speech out word for word. When we script the entire speech, it sounds too formal,” says the public speaking expert. “I recommend first brainstorming the content, rearranging it into a logical structure, then drafting a general outline which you can bring with you to the event. While it may look better to simply give the speech ‘from the heart,’ the stress involved in trying to memorize your speech is simply not worth it.”
How to Deliver a Wedding Speech
Writing a wedding speech is half the battle—next comes your performance. It’s important that your toast has a good flow, feels natural, and doesn’t drag on. Here’s where the idiom “practice makes perfect” rings true. Shapira advises giving yourself a few weeks of rehearsal to make your speech feel authentic and fluid. Her recommendations? “Read your speech out loud and make sure it stays within the time you have allotted. Read it to someone else and get their feedback. Record it and watch it back. We use a tool called AMPLIFY to get AI-based feedback.” She adds, “Don’t memorize the speech, but do read it out loud and make sure it sounds like your voice.”
The ideal length of a toast is between two to four minutes, which translates to around 500 to 1000 words on a page. Still, Greitzer notes, “The perfect length for the wedding toast complies with whatever length the couple wants it to be. Many guests don’t realize that long speeches can impact the whole evening’s timeline and affect the caterer, DJ, and so much more.”
While it’s now common to see toasts being read off a phone, both experts agree that it’s much better to print out your speech. “Reading off of a phone comes with the risk of distractions from notifications, a weird backlight that can affect the color of your face in photos, finicky technical difficulties, and having that annoying sound interference with the mic,” says Greitzer. (You also should make sure your speech is legible with a large font and wide spacing so you can easily find your place.)
The final hurdle of giving a wedding toast is getting over your nerves. “Find a quiet place right beforehand to center yourself (perhaps the bathroom or a corner of the room), pause and breathe, and remind yourself why you care about the couple,” recommends Shapira. She also adds—perhaps unsurprisingly—that it’s best to hold back on alcohol consumption ahead of the toast. “No one expects a perfect or professional speech; they want a unique, authentic message. The speech isn’t about you—it’s about the couple. Once you reframe the fact that the center of attention isn’t on you, you can relax.”

If you feel as though public speaking isn't easy, you're not alone. Many people find it to be a particularly anxiety-inducing experience. This is especially true when you're feeling the added pressure that comes along with giving a speech at a loved one's wedding. Not only do you have the attention of dozens (if not hundreds!) of guests, but you're also trying to appeal to a group of people in a wide range of ages from all different phases of the couple's lives. Plus, you want your speech to delight the couple of the hour and be as appealing to your group of friends as it is to the newlyweds' grandparents . All to say: It's a tough task.
Before you panic, know that we're here to help. Ahead, we're sharing a comprehensive guide on the best tips to keep in mind before giving your speech , as well as some examples and templates to help get your creative juices flowing—all from noteworthy speakers, well-established speechwriters, and wedding planners.
Wedding Speech Template
Every great wedding speech has one thing in common: the right flow. Factor in these guidelines to help you find your own organic rhythm.
Congratulate the Couple
Express how happy you are that the two of them are getting married and what it means to you to witness it.
Open With a Statement or Question
Don't lead with a joke or a reference to how nervous you are. "The goal is to engage your audience, not make it a boring one-way message," says award-winning motivational speaker Jaime Pfeffer . "You'll lose them if you do this."
Introduce Yourself
After your opener, introduce yourself, says Fallon Carter, the founder and creative director of Fallon Carter Events . "A lot of times, people don't know who is speaking, and they don't know their relationship to the bride or the groom," she says. "It's really important to identify yourself, so make sure you've prepared something."
Tell a Story
When you’re writing your speech, think about stories that could be grouped together. "Choose anecdotes that all fit a theme and support your argument," says Kristine Keller, a writer and the co-founder of Speech Tank . The theme will help tie it together, making your toast feel intentional instead of random.
Address Both Partners
You may not know them both well, but you shouldn’t focus all of your attention on your friend and ignore their new spouse. "Even if you’ve only met your friend’s partner once or twice before, find a way to include him or her in your toast," says Marisa Polansky, a book editor, author, and co-founder of Speech Tank. "Tell the story of their engagement or share something your friend told you about them that proves what a great partner he or she is."
Go for the Crowd-Pleasers
"Anything that’s an inside joke may have been funny at the time, but no one else will understand what you’re talking about," Keller says. "Run your stories and jokes by a neutral audience to see if they are as funny as you think." And remember, a little humor is fine , but this is a toast—not a roast.
Focus on a Few Points
Susan Bender Phelps, the CEO of Odyssey Mentoring & Leadership , says to keep it concise. Select one to three aspects of the newlyweds that you love and appreciate, along with no more than three short stories to illustrate each of these points (or that one point). "The simple, succinct story or stories where the bride and groom are the hero will work best," she says. This is an excellent way to structure your speech and keep your message focused.
Raise Your Glass for a Toast
To wrap up your speech, invite everyone to raise their glass to the couple, or to love, etc., then cheers glasses together and take a sip.

13 Expert-Approved Wedding Speech Tips
Now that you've established the right framework for your words, take note of these essential tips from the experts to truly ace your speech.
Just Get Started
Figuring out where to start when drafting your toast can be tough. "When we work with our clients, we always start with a stream of consciousness," Keller says. "We ask them to just start telling us stories. You might not think every anecdote is important, but all of a sudden you’ll land on a real gem."
Start Writing Things Down
When you’re doing this at home on your own, Polansky says to just start writing stuff down. "Put it all down on paper," she recommends. "Don’t worry about editing as you’re writing, just get it out and then go back and pick and choose details when you’re done." This will help you identify a theme, which is what you’ll need to make your toast really memorable.
Use Examples
"If you’re trying to make a point about the bride or groom's personality—say, that she or he's particularly loyal—don’t just say that and move on," Polansky says. "Pick a specific moment that proves your point. Have something to back it up!" Including some proof will make sure your listeners really buy what you’re saying about the couple.
Make It Quick
"The best length for a toast is about three minutes," Polansky says. "It’s enough time to say what you need to say, but short enough that you’ll still have everyone’s attention when you ask them to raise their glasses to toast the happy couple."
Rehearse Regularly
The better prepared you are, the more confident you'll be and the better your speech will be, says Barry Maher , an author and professional speaker. A good rule of thumb is to practice the speech enough that you can remember the points you want to make and the order in which you want to make them. That way, you can look out to the crowd and make eye contact every so often.
Think you know what three minutes feels like? You may want to reconsider. "Practice reading your speech out loud (not in your head!) and time yourself," Polansky says. "Don’t wing it, especially if you’re nervous. Give yourself time to prepare. Practice with an audience to check your timing, and give yourself time to make edits."
Record Yourself Practicing
Use your phone to take a video of yourself practicing, suggests Kate Kenfield , a speaker, writer, and sex educator. "It can be a little uncomfortable to watch yourself, but you'll be able to identify distracting mannerisms, such as the verbal pauses 'um,' 'uh,' and 'like,'" she says. "It's also a good idea to practice your speech in front of someone else. "A second opinion can help you craft your piece and make it that much stronger," she adds.
Don't forget about your body language. Rehearse the speech in front of a mirror and notice things like your facial expression, eye contact, and hand position.
Avoid Alcohol
Although it may be tempting to look for some liquid courage, alcohol definitely won't do you any favors, says Amy Morin , a keynote speaker and the author of 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do . "It may cause you to slur your speech and forget your lines, so wait until after your toast to celebrate," she advises. If you need a drink to loosen up the nerves or can't refrain from participating in a toast without being rude, stick to one glass of Champagne before you address the crowd.
Use Nerves to Your Advantage
A little nervousness can actually liven up your speech. "I get worried if I'm not a little nervous," Maher says. "I'll actually try to make myself a little tense to get my energy level up." The key is to harness that energy and communicate it in a positive, genuine way; tensing up to the point that you forget your words or panic won't make for a great presentation.
Be Yourself
Keep in mind that you're not putting on a show, only sharing your personal perspective. Trying too hard to force the funny can yield the opposite of the desired effect, cautions Matt Dalley, the co-founder of Simply Eloped . "I've noticed that keeping it short and sweet, heartfelt and warm, and coming across as authentic and focused on the couple is something we are all capable of and generates some very wonderful moments," he says.
Address Your Audience
Focusing on yourself only enhances nerves, says Mark Black , a speaker and life strategy coach. "Instead, concentrate on your audience and how you want them to feel," he recommends. "This will help you to speak from the heart, allowing your speech to do what it's supposed to do: Make the couple feel special while also engaging the audience."
Never Embarrass the Newlyweds
It's a wedding toast, not a roast. While this should go without saying, keep the bachelor or bachelorette party jokes out of it, and remember that grandma and possibly a few colleagues are in the audience, says Laurie Battaglia , a keynote speaker and workplace strategist. "It's okay to look back at childhood and refer to something funny, but ask yourself if you'd like 200-plus of your closest friends knowing that story about you."
Don't Overstuff Your Speech
"If you’re a fast talker, try to slow yourself down so that everyone will understand you," Polansky says. (Better to cut a few lines than to try to fit a 10-minute toast into a three-minute time frame.)
Don’t count on your phone, which may lock or turn off mid-speech. Instead, print out your toast or put it on note cards for reference. "It’s your moment to have the floor, so don’t risk forgetting your point," Keller says.
Use Your Notes
Try to avoid reading your speech straight from a piece of paper. However, having a couple of notes handy is encouraged. "You're likely to be nervous, excited, and exhausted, which can make you forget your lines," Morin says. "The audience won't care if you glance at your notes. In fact, there's a good chance they won't even notice."

Wedding Speech Brainstorm Ideas
Need some inspiration? Ask yourself these questions to get the brainstorming process going.
- Who will speak before you? After you? How will this affect the content of your toast?
- Is there someone you should thank for making the event possible and inviting you to speak?
- What would you want to hear in this speech if you were in the audience?
- What is your first memory of the bride/groom?
- What is your favorite memory of the bride/groom?
- What did he/she say when he/she first told you about his/her partner?
- How did you know they were meant to be ?
- What has the bride/groom or the couple as a whole taught you?
- What qualities do you admire in them?
- When are times that they displayed these qualities?
Wedding Speech Examples to Make Your Own
Wondering what it looks like when all of these elements come together? Wedding vow and speechwriter Katelyn Peterson, owner and creator of Wedding Words , offered us three examples of successful toasts to inspire your own.
Maid of Honor Wedding Speech Example
"Hi, I’m Maya, the bride’s older sister. With Lucy being three years younger, we fell right into our respective roles as sister-rivals growing up. We constantly fought over stolen clothes, monopolizing the phone back when landlines were a thing, and what boy band to blare from the car speakers. I’m still Team Backstreet Boys while Lucy is forever indebted to NSYNC.
Looking back on those memories, I should have stepped up and granted Lucy permission to wear my favorite sweater for picture day, to hand her the phone once in a while, and to let her play, 'Bye Bye Bye.' Even I can admit that’s a good one. But despite Lucy being the younger sister, she has always been more patient, more accommodating, and more thoughtful than me. And that’s because when it comes to the people she loves, she’s all in.
She’s the one to prioritize their desires. She’s the one to compromise first. And, she’s the one to support their dreams as if they were her own.
This is why it makes me so happy to know that Lucy has found a home in David. He matches her in compassion, thoughtfulness, and warmth. And I know he’ll spend his life prioritizing her desires, being ready to compromise, and supporting her dreams as his own.
Cheers to Lucy and David! May you always feel loved because you always put each other first."
Best Man Wedding Speech Example
"Hello, everyone. My name is Luke, and I’m the best man . I met Robert eight years ago when I became his neighbor. His reputation preceded him as I had heard about the 'Block Party King' before my closing papers were inked.
Rob has never been the guy to wear fancy clothes. In fact, I’m still in shock seeing him in that tux tonight. And he’s never been the guy to show off, even though the work he’s put into his vintage Mustang could make Henry Ford himself envious.
But when it comes to cooking, he should receive an award. His pulled pork is a staple at our summer block parties and his homemade barbeque sauce has remained our neighborhood’s best-kept secret. But the most satisfying part about his delicious dishes is that there’s always plenty to go around. And Rob makes sure your plate is never empty. I have no idea how he pulls it off, but Rob has a covert ability to scoop seconds onto your plate without you ever seeing him do it. I hope you all came hungry tonight, folks. You’ve been warned!
The first time I met Jasmine I could immediately tell she was an amazing person. She laughed at his jokes, which I never thought anyone would get. She supported his career and the nonstop travel involved. But most importantly, whenever we’re all hanging out, Jasmine is the one always topping off Rob’s plate with more pasta, more chicken, more of everything. When she’s around, it’s never empty.
And that’s when I saw what a perfect match they were for each other. I know they will always put each other first, make sure their needs are met, and will never allow the other to go hungry.
So let’s raise our glasses to toast the newlyweds! As you begin this next chapter together, may your plates and your hearts always remain full."
Father-of-the-Bride Wedding Speech Example
"Good evening, family, and friends. I’m Daniel Lee, the father of the bride. I’d like to welcome you to this special occasion where we get to celebrate the love between my daughter Allison and her new wife, Kristin.
Standing up here today, I’m reminded of all the moments that led to this significant one. The dance recitals that ended with standing ovations and the soccer games that concluded with winning scoreboards.
But, while those were fun and rewarding times, those aren’t the moments I cherish most with Allison. The memories that make me smile the brightest are those in-between the big stuff moments. It’s the makeshift magic shows in our living room using a bedsheet that Allison confiscated from our linen closet to convert into a curtain. It’s the countless tea parties she hosted with exclusive invitations just for me and her beloved stuffed bear, Buttons. And it’s the way she’d beg to stay up for just five more minutes but was asleep on the couch by minute number two.
Those everyday, blink-and-you’ll-miss-them moments with Allison are the ones that gave color to my life and filled my heart with a happiness I never knew could exist.
So, my beautiful daughter, as you begin your life with Kristin today, I have one wish for you: May your warmest memories come from the ordinary moments throughout your marriage, and may those moments give you a reason to smile brighter every day. Cheers! I love you both."

- How to Write an Incredible Best Man Speech
So you’ve been asked to be the Best Man at your friend’s wedding and now you’re sweating because you know you have to write a Best Man speech. Don’t worry! As professional wedding officiants, we know a thing or two about writing speeches, wowing the crowd and talking about love.
Our tips below apply to anyone who has been asked to give a speech at a wedding, whether you’re the Best Man, Maid of Honour , Best Person or Best Friend. If you’re not sure where to start when it comes to writing your speech or have no ideas for your toast, we have you covered.
Below we’re sharing all of our best Best Man speech ideas, from how long a speech should be to the exact format your speech should follow. We’re also including an example speech and our top tips to ensure your speech doesn’t flop!
Let’s write your wedding speech!
How long should the Best Man speech be?
Aim for your Best Man speech to be three minutes long . No one wants to sit through a 10 minute speech, even if you think it’s the most hilarious or heartfelt writing in the world. On the other hand, only speaking for a minute or two can feel incomplete.
If you’re not sure how long your speech should be, ask the couple . They likely have a detailed reception schedule and will appreciate you sticking to it. You’ll also want to find out from them exactly when during the reception you’re speaking so you’re not at the bar (or in the bathroom!) when it’s speech time.
How should I start writing a Best Man toast?
Before you start writing your Best Man toast, check in with the couple getting married . Besides how long they’d like the speech to be, they may have some other things for you to keep in mind – or some stories they definitely don’t want you to tell.
Remember to be yourself. If you’re naturally funny, include a few jokes. If you’re more serious or poetic, don’t be afraid to get sentimental. Your friends asked you to give a speech – they’re not expecting you to be someone you’re not. The best wedding toasts and speeches happen when the speakers are comfortable, which means not trying to be a comedian if that’s not who you are.
Don’t worry about bringing down the house with a killer joke, don’t worry about making everyone shed a tear and don’t worry about having a unifying theme for your speech. Take a deep breath and remember that you’re just sharing some thoughts and stories about some of your favourite people. As long as you put in a little effort, it’s going to be great.

Follow these steps to write your own incredible Best Man speech!
1) Best Man toast introduction
Start your speech off by introducing yourself and sharing how you know the couple. This can be as simple as, “Hello, my name is Taylor and I’m the Best Man. I first met Cory in 3rd grade gym class.” Easy, right?
Pro tip: A lot of speakers think they need to begin their speech by welcoming everyone and thanking them for coming. This is actually not something you should do as the Best Man. Unless you’re hosting the wedding (aka you’re the couple getting married or you’re paying for the wedding), it’s not your place.
2) Talk about your friend
After you’ve introduced yourself, it’s time to talk about your friend – the person who just got married and who asked you to be their Best Man. This is your time to share a few short stories that highlight who your friend is and what their friendship means to you.
While your speech doesn’t need to have an overarching theme, it’s best if each story you share has a purpose. Answer the question, “Why am I telling this story and what does it say about my friend?” For example, a story about how your friend let you crash at their place when you were between apartments can show how loyal and generous your friend is.
Not sure what stories to tell? Keep reading for our best inspiration ideas and stories you definitely do not want to tell!
3) Talk about their new spouse
One of the biggest things wedding speakers get wrong is only talking about their friend. Sure, you may know your friend better, but today isn’t just about your friend. It’s about your friend and their brand new spouse. Take some time during your speech to mention this important person too!
You can share stories of your time together, reflect on how the couple first met or talk about how you knew this person was going to be a great match for your friend. Even if you don’t know their spouse as well as you know your friend, you should be able to add a few sentences about them to your Best Man speech.
4) Talk about them together
As you start to wrap up your speech, bring it back to the couple. This is where you can talk about how great they are together, share your well wishes for their marriage ahead and thank them for including you in their special day.
Pro tip: Be careful about including marriage advice in your wedding toast. It can be nice to include some advice for the newlyweds in your speech, but only if that feels appropriate to you.
If you’ve been married for 10 years, go ahead and share a secret to your success! But if you’re single or newly divorced, skip the advice and offer well wishes instead.
5) Wedding toast closing line
Every good wedding speech ends with a toast! Include a sentence or two to congratulate the newlyweds and then lead everyone in a cheers to their union.
Make sure to bring a glass with you when you go to give your speech so you’re not scrambling to find one. And make sure to invite everyone to toast with you by asking them to raise their glasses. Many speakers forget to give guests a warning that the toast is coming, leading to a pretty lacklustre cheers. Ensure everyone is ready by saying something like, “And now, if you will all join me in raising your glasses…”
Best Man speech example
Here’s an example of our Best Man speech template in action:
“Hello! For those who don’t know me, I’m Dave, Brad’s Best Man and I’ve known Brad for what feels like forever.
Brad and I go way back, to the days when our biggest concern was getting into movies we were probably too young to watch and deciding what haircuts would make us look like rock stars.
One of my favourite memories with Brad was when we were driving to Florida. Picture this: we’re eight hours into our road trip and get stuck in the middle of the night with a flat tire. Most folks would be cursing their luck, but not Brad. He turns to me and says, “Well, unexpected pit stop. Let’s check out this town!” That’s just how Brad rolls; he always finds the silver lining and keeps everyone around him smiling.
We’ve been through some crazy stuff together, Brad and me, but today’s not about that – it’s about two awesome people, Brad and Jane.
I knew Jane was the one for Brad when I first saw them together at karaoke night. Brad was rocking out to ‘Livin’ on a Prayer,’ missing every single note and there was Jane, cheering him on like he was the only guy in the room. I knew then that it had to be true love because only someone who really loved Brad could put up with his terrible singing.
Karaoke nights aside, Brad and Jane just fit, you know? She brings out the best in him, and he gets her laughing like nobody else can. It’s like they’re each other’s missing puzzle piece; life feels more complete when they’re together.
So if you can all join me in raising a glass to Brad and Jane. Here’s to a lifetime of laughs, love, and whatever adventures come your way. Cheers!”
Fun ideas to inspire your Best Man toast
If you’re struggling to think of what stories to share in your Best Man toast, here are a few questions to inspire you:
- What are some of your best memories with your friend? Think of trips you’ve been on, events you’ve attended, traditions you’ve kept up over the years, etc.
- How did you first meet your friend? What was the moment you knew that you were going to be great friends for life?
- What challenges have you or your friend gone through? How have you seen each other through those times?
- When did you first meet your friend’s partner? How did you know the two of them were right for each other?
- How has your friend changed for the better since meeting their partner? How have they grown?
- How would you describe their relationship? Is there a story or moment that perfectly explains why you describe it that way?
And here are a few ideas you may want to incorporate into your speech. Remember, these ideas aren’t for everyone and you shouldn’t incorporate all of them. Only choose ideas that feel authentic to you!
- Rhyming: It can be sweet to include a few rhyming lines in your speech, especially if you’re known as a good poet or rapper.
- Dictionary definition: While it’s a little tired, you could include a dictionary definition in your speech in a new way. You could even poke fun at this speech convention and turn it on its head by saying something like, “Webster’s dictionary defines love as an intense feeling of deep connection but I say love is Patrick bringing David a blueberry scone every Sunday.”
- Props: Sometimes a story is more engaging for guests if you’re able to bring out a prop. But don’t go overboard! Only include props if they are relevant to your speech, such as a note your friend passed you in math class about the cute guy who is now their husband!
- Quote: If you can’t find the right words, you can always include a quote that sums up how you’re feeling. Check out these quotes on marriage or our favourite wedding quotes for inspiration!
- Messages from people who couldn’t be there: If some people in your friend group couldn’t attend the wedding, this is a nice way to include them in your speech. You could also expand on this idea and include messages from people your friend isn’t expecting to hear from, like their third grade teacher who first sat you two together in class!
7 Best Man speech tips to ensure your speech is incredible (and doesn’t flop!)
So you know how to write your Best Man speech and you’ve got lots of ideas to inspire the content. Before you get writing, we want to leave you with seven important tips to make sure your speech is as awesome as possible.
1) Keep the focus on the couple, not you
Remember, this wedding day and your speech are about the couple getting married. It’s not just about your friend and it’s certainly not about you. Please don’t spend your whole Best Man speech telling stories about yourself or only trying to make yourself look good.
2) Don’t force the joke
This is a speech, not a roast. While you can make a non traditional wedding toast and tease your buddy, this is not the time to make him feel bad, uncomfortable or embarrassed. If you’re not sure if your jokes are going too far, they probably are.
3) Don’t be afraid to get sentimental
Best Man speeches are known for being light and funny. Most people expect the Best Man to keeps things casual and tell a few jokes. But the best Best Man speeches are the ones that come from the heart. Because no one is expecting it, you can make a huge impact by being heartfelt and sentimental.
4) Don’t get drunk
We hate that this has to be said but please, don’t get drunk before your speech. This is a special moment that your friends are counting on you to deliver. You don’t want to be shouting, slurring and stumbling your way through. Save any heavy drinking until after your speech is over.
5) Keep it G rated
Unless told otherwise by your friend who is getting married, assume that both grandparents and young children will be in the room listening to your speech. That means you need to keep things G-rated! Your speech should avoid :
- past relationships or exes of the couple
- shitting on marriage or bad marriage jokes
- sexist jokes (go ahead and avoid these anytime you talk, not just for this speech!)
- anything sex related
- any stories that involve illegal activities
Use your best judgment. If you wouldn’t want a story like that about you told to your grandma or five year old cousin, cut it from your Best Man speech.
6) Practice
Please don’t get up there and try to wing it. You may think you’ll come off sounding more naturally and conversational but you won’t. You’ll look forgetful, unprepared and like you didn’t care enough to put any effort into your speech.
Take the time to thoughtfully write a speech and practice delivering it beforehand. If you’re nervous, get feedback from a friend.
7) Don’t read off your phone
In this day and age, it’s not unusual to see wedding speeches (and even vows!) being read off of phones. But this is one of our biggest pet peeves! By reading your speech off of a phone, you risk technology letting your down – what happens if you don’t have WiFi or your phone dies? You also look like you’re just scrolling on social media in all of the wedding photos.
Take the time to write or print out your speech. You’ll feel more confident and the photos will look so much better.
We hope we’ve covered everything you need to know to write an incredible Best Man speech. But we’re not going to leave the rest of the wedding speakers hanging!

6 Best Man Speech Ideas, Examples, and Tips
By wedding spot.
Need some help writing your best man speech? Thousands and thousands of distressed forum threads, alarmed Quora posts, and social media cries for help are dedicated to this very request every year. Whether you’ve got a few weeks or a few hours, we’ve got you covered with this guide on how to come up with a best man speech you and the happy couple will love. Keep reading to discover some important best man speech ideas, examples, and tips that will make the process simple and virtually painless.
Do’s and don’ts every best man should know before drafting their speech:
Length: The most important thing to keep in mind is the length. Shorter is better, so shoot for less than five minutes. The most ideal time would be three minutes: 30-second introduction, two minutes on the main story, and 30 seconds to wrap up and give well wishes.
Tone: Keep it classy for the older relatives and leave out expletives, raunchy jokes, and stories that you can’t un-tell. Professional storytellers for the Moth , a famous storytelling podcast and prestigious competition, say that a mix of funny and sentimental usually packs a punch as long as you do it in that order. Also, be sincere. Corny jokes get boring really quickly.
Content: Stories will always be more entertaining than random jokes. Include a one-liner at the beginning of the speech, then bring it back to something that actually happened. The focus should be on the couple or your relationship with them, but not just you and your accomplishments.

Long best man speech example: Here’s a best man speech example from an older brother to his younger brother, which we edited for clarity and brevity.
“Good afternoon everyone, I’m the best man.
Before I start, I’d just like to say there is no flash photography during this event. The bride and groom are a very shy pair and we don’t want to startle them. If you look really closely at them, you’ll see they’re already starting to feel quite uncomfortable. Maybe they’d like me to just get on with my speech, but I really think it’s all the phones pointed at them right now.
Oh, it’s the speech? Okay, I’ll continue.
Ever since (he was born, he started at Boston University, etc.), (groom) and I have been (brothers, friends, etc.). Now, he’s not the best-looking guy, so it does make sense that he’d ask the older, fatter, and balder (friend, version of himself, etc.) to be his best man. And we’ve genuinely been told throughout our lives that we (look incredibly alike, are attached at the hip, etc.). I honestly don’t see it, but as I know, some people here still can’t tell the difference: (Groom’s mom or bride), I’m (best man), and that one’s (groom).
The bride and groom have asked that I don’t talk about any of (groom)’s mishaps, mistakes, or embarrassing moments, and instead do talk about the positive things in his life. I mean, you’ve made this incredibly difficult for me, but I’ll do my best.
*Get out a scrap of paper* (Groom)’s an amazing person. He’s funny, he’s kind, he’s incredibly clever. He’s even (studying to be an engineer, learning how to rollerblade, etc.)! Not only that, but he’s … wait … (groom), I can’t say that, man!
(Bride), you look lovely today; and (groom), you look sharper than ever in that suit! Cheers to a long, happy marriage for you both! But more so for (bride), because she’s really got her hands full now. Cheers!”
Key takeaway: Making fun of yourself more than you make fun of the groom will always be a hit. Also, don’t shy away from the roast-style “set ‘em up to punch ‘em down” jokes like the ones featured here.
Make it your own: This speech runs less than two minutes. Make it longer and personalize it by adding a story about you and the groom growing up that you think says something about who he is today, either by contrast or extreme similarity.
Short best man speech example: Get some quick laughs and an “aww” with a little something like this.
“I really should have given my speech first since (maid of honor)’s speech was way better than mine, but this is all your fault (groom), so enjoy! Thank you all for coming and for those who helped make this wedding so beautiful. (Bride), you look absolutely stunning tonight. (Groom), well, you’re here tonight. All jokes aside, I’m really happy for you both. I always wanted (a sister, someone to help me wrangle the groom, etc.), and now I finally have one. So here’s a toast to the bride and groom!”
Key takeaway: A quick icebreaker, thank you, and joke followed by a sentimental thought is really all you need.
Make it your own: Personalize the items in brackets to fit your sense of humor and situation. Reference real stories and moments at the wedding.
Find the perfect wedding venue!
2. Use a template.
If memorizing a script feels like too much pressure, outline your main points, and improvise from there. Here’s a foolproof structure for any best man speech.
Introduce yourself and how you know the happy couple.
Thank the hosts or parents if they paid for the wedding.
Say something nice about their partner and something funny about them.
Tell a short, funny story about your relationship to the groom that ties into what makes the newlyweds’ relationship special too.
End on a sentimental note with your well wishes.
Pro tip: Brainstorm 3-5 anecdotes you like, sleep on it, then narrow down your options to your Top 2.
3. Nail the opening line.
The most memorable opening line for a best man speech is funny, grabs the audience’s attention, and offers a twist at the end. For example:
“(Groom) didn't have an easy decision in choosing his best man. First, he called his most successful friend, who said no. Then, he called his smartest friend, who said no. Then, he asked his most attractive friend, and he also said no. Then, he called me, and I said, ‘(groom), I can't say no to you four times.’”
4. Tell great jokes.
Keep the slander to a minimum. Instead, focus on making fun of yourself or telling a story of which you’re both equally embarrassed. You can also take this opportunity to be comedically competitive, regardless of who comes out on top in your speech.
For example, acknowledging how you’ve done better at something can be funny just as long as you then mention how they ended up being the winner anyway because they found their partner.
You can also take this opportunity to let others know about an inside joke or a story of something you two did together that no one has heard before (as long as it won’t get you in trouble with their partner, of course).
5. Sprinkle in one-liners.
Funny one-liners are a great way to get the audience’s energy up and keep them engaged before you end with a sentimental punch. Here are some examples that even grandma will appreciate.
(Bride), you look stunning. (Groom), you look stunned.
(Bride), you're so beautiful you make (groom) look ... (successful, famous, rich)?
(Bride), you’re the luckiest person in the world to lock down someone like my (friend, brother, etc.). (Groom) is so good looking, so considerate, so humble, so… (groom), I’m sorry, I can't read your handwriting here.
6. Consider your relationship.
The most impactful best man speeches take the relationship you have with the groom into account. Here are some tips for each major type.
Older brother getting married:
Limit yourself to one or two icebreaker insults. Any more and your speech turns into a roast.
Highlight how much of an example the groom has set for you, for better or worse.
Younger brother getting married:
Mention at least one meaningful way you’ve seen the groom grow over the years.
Make a joke to their partner’s benefit about how the groom has “finally won” your sibling rivalry by finding them.
Dad getting married:
Incorporate an important life lesson your dad taught you and weave it into both your main story and your perspective on the wedding today.
Express gratitude for all he has done for you. He’ll really appreciate it.
Best friend getting married:
Mention a good quality you remember from the early days of your friendship such as their talent at field hockey or their love of knitting.
Talk about what makes them special compared to the rest of your friend group in your eyes through the lens of a flattering story.
If you don’t have a close relationship with the groom: Lean into their interests and use them as a metaphor for how you feel about their marriage. For example, a Star Wars buff might really appreciate a Luke and Leia comparison. Personalizing it like this will show how much you care by putting in more effort to get to know their interests and give you another thing to bond over long after the wedding is over.
Hint: if it’s the groom’s second marriage, make sure you know who is in attendance before you start jokingly ripping into their ex. In fact, let them be the ones to make jokes about the situation.
Now you know how to give an amazing best man speech!
Using the advice above, you now know everything about how to write and give a best man speech everyone will enjoy. Don’t be afraid to use borrowed examples, templates, or one-liners. As long as you personalize it and speak from the heart, your speech will be memorable.

Tips for Giving a Best Man Speech
Need a few tips on how to give a memorable best man speech? The Zola experts can help! Read on to learn more.
By Deanna deBara
Last updated February 5, 2024
There are a lot of responsibilities that go along with being the best man , from helping the couple through the wedding planning process to throwing the bachelor party, and, finally, standing next to the soon-to-be married couple as they say their “I do’s.”
And, one of the most important responsibilities that you’ll have as a best man is making the best man speech . The best man speech is a highlight of the wedding reception —and, as the best man, it’s important to do everything you can to deliver the best speech possible to the newlyweds and their wedding guests .
But, how exactly do you do that? If you don’t know how to give a best man speech, the Zola experts are here to help. Here are a few tips to ensure that your best man speech goes off without a hitch:
Practice, Practice, Practice
The wedding day should not be the first time that you give your best man speech. We repeat, the wedding day should not be the first time that you give your best man speech.
If you show up to the big day and wing your wedding speech, could it go well? Sure. But, the chances of it not going well are significantly higher—and you could find yourself stumbling over your words, saying the wrong thing, or completely freezing when you get up to speak to the happy couple and their wedding guests.
Perhaps the most important tip for giving a best man speech is to give yourself plenty of time and opportunities to practice before the wedding reception.
Start writing your speech early. Practice it out loud—and practice it out loud often. Ask to practice in front of a friend or family member to see if there are any issues that you need to address before the wedding day.
The more you practice, the more comfortable you’ll be with giving your speech—and the better the speech will be on the actual wedding day.
Talk Slowly
Public speaking makes a lot of people nervous. And when people are nervous, they have a tendency to talk faster than they normally would—and that includes during wedding speeches.
If you’re one of those people who talks fast when they’re nervous that’s ok! But, while you might feel that you’re talking only slightly faster than you do in normal conversations, to other people, it could feel like you’re talking a mile a minute—which is why it’s important to speak more slowly than you think is necessary during your best man speech on the special day.
Why is that? If you consciously speak slowly (and slower than you think is necessary), chances are that it will counteract any nervous speed-ups in your speech pattern—and, to the couple and wedding guests, it should sound like you’re speaking at a normal speed.
So, when you’re giving your wedding speech, pay attention to how quickly you’re speaking. Slow it down—and slow it down more than you think is necessary. It might seem too slow to you, but more often than not, to the people listening, it will be at a pace that’s easy to hear and understand, which is exactly the speed that you want.
Make It Personal
The couple asked you to be the best man for a reason; you’re a person that plays a large role in their life and they want you to be by their side on one of the most important days of their life.
And, because you play such an important role in their life, the last thing you want is to give a generic best man speech. You want it to feel personal, so make sure that you incorporate personal details into your speech.
Your best man speech is the perfect opportunity to get personal and share favorite memories, funny stories, and heartfelt wishes for the newlyweds. If you want your speech to be impactful and show the couple how much you value them and their relationship, you should definitely take the opportunity to include thoughtful words.
Keep Things Appropriate
You want your best man speech to be personal, but you don’t want it to be too personal.
Don’t include anything in your best man speech that could potentially embarrass or upset the couple. You also want to avoid anything that could make wedding guests uncomfortable. Generally, you want to forgo mentioning past relationships, excessive drinking, sex, and/or illegal activities. (Save those stories for the bachelor party.)
End With a Toast
Knowing how to end a speech can be tough. But, when you’re giving a best man speech, there’s only one way to end it—and that’s with a toast to the happy couple.
As you near the end of your speech, which should be anywhere from two to five minutes, ask the wedding guests to raise their glasses to the newlyweds. Offer up a toast wishing them health and happiness in their marriage. Then, congratulate them, take a drink, and end your speech on a high note.
Giving the best man speech can be a nerve-wracking experience. But, with these tips, you have everything you need to deliver a speech to remember. So, all that’s left to do is give the best speech you can—for the couple, for the wedding guests, and for yourself.

The ultimate guide to best man duties: Tips for a memorable wedding
As the best man, you must make sure everything runs smoothly from the groom’s side. Picture: Pexels.
Published Oct 14, 2024
It’s the wedding season and while the maid of honour has a lot of work to do to make sure the wedding runs smoothly, the best man must also do his part diligently.
Being the best man for the first time can be a challenge because you don’t know how to navigate things.
That is why wedding expert Chris Badja, the owner and founder of Groomsday, tells the best man and the groomsmen not to panic. Instead, they should work as a collective to make sure that everything runs smoothly .
“Being a best man comes with both honour and responsibility. While it can be overwhelming for some, having a clear plan and staying organised makes sure the big day goes off without a hitch.
“From managing groomsmen to delivering that all-important speech, preparation is key. The goal is to create a smooth experience for the couple while making lasting memories.
“A well-prepared best man can elevate the wedding day, but going the extra mile will put you down in best man folklore,” says Badja.
Below are tips on how you can be the greatest best man:
Planning the bachelor party
Communicate with the groom and his friends about the kind of party they would like. Overindulging in alcohol is not cool as you’re not in college anymore.
Maybe a weekend away doing fun activities would do. Also, avoid hosting the bachelor party a night before the wedding. The groom needs to rest and look just as great as his bride.
Manage the groomsmen
You must have planned everything with the groomsmen before the wedding. Everyone must know what their role is and, if there is a performance you would like to deliver, make sure everyone has rehearsed or it’s going to be a flop.
Choosing the right attire
Everyone needs to stick to the theme. Do not try to be cool by wearing something out of theme, it’s disrespectful to the couple getting married.
Deliver a memorable speech
Prepare a speech in time and make sure it’s about the couple. Do not speak about embarrassing moments, such may make the couple feel uncomfortable.
“It’s important to remember that the speech is not about you, but about the couple in front of you. Keeping the speech specific to the couple makes it feel more authentic and special while avoiding any awkward moments or putting people to sleep,” says Badja.

Why write a funny best man speech ✍️.
Research shows that humour is a powerful tool for public speaking .
A speech can be intimidating, and often boring for those who sit through it.
However, if you take the time to research and write a funny best man speech, it can be legendary.
Your best mate has trusted you, so you better get up there and deliver.
And with effort, you can!
Plus, jokes keep the speech light-hearted, and if you do it correctly, add a personal touch for the groom on his big day.
Where to start? Do I get the jokes over and done with? Do I save them until the end?
Listen, writing a hilarious best man speech is an art—but one you can master.
Our top tip is to use humour sparingly.
Back-to-back gags are overkill, and remember, it’s not your first crack at an open mic comedy night.
Here is our structure for a top-tier best man speech:
- Welcome – Introduce yourself and explain your relationship with the groom.
- Formal Intro – Reply to the groom’s thanks to the bridesmaids and groomsmen.
- The Bride – Compliment the bride, it’s time to be charming before grilling the groom.
- The Groom – Now you can rip into your best friend, and let the fun begin.
- Soften the Blow – Yes, you have to say some kind words about him.
- Messages – Take time to read any messages from individuals who couldn’t attend.
- Toast – Close the speech by asking everybody to raise their glass to the happy couple.
The key to a killer best man speech is in the delivery.
Confidence is king, and there are several tips to ensure your speech is on point:
- Use Confident Body Language – Maintain eye contact with the crowd, smile, use your hands as you speak, and keep a straight posture.
- Organise the Speech – Follow our structure, and it will flow naturally.
- Keep Calm – Don’t blitz through the speech, take your time, and breathe. If it’s rushed, people could be laughing for the wrong reasons…
- Project Your Voice – Loud and clear for everybody to hear, especially at the back.
The Dos … ✅
Follow our hitlist and you’ll deliver a quality speech with guaranteed laughter:
- Practice – Practice makes perfect. Rehearse your lines, and you’ll deliver the speech like a pro.
- Cue Cards – Bit of a throwback to awkward classroom presentations, but cue cards can give you reminders, so you don’t forget anything. It’s also better than holding paper.
- Know Your Audience – This is essential. Know the crowd, and you can write your speech accordingly, which is dead important for getting laughs and avoiding upsets.
- Light Humour – Tease the groom and mention any funny stories or key memories from your time as friends, as this adds a personal touch.
- Inside Family Jokes – If you’re in on private jokes or anecdotes, use them; they can add charm that impresses the groom and his family.
The Don’ts … ❌
Avoid these common mistakes, save yourself from embarrassment, and don’t ruin the newlywedded couple’s big moment:
- Leave it Last Minute – It’s not a uni essay. Your best friend has trusted you on his big day, so put in some effort, prepare, and make it special.
- Copy and Paste – If you grab something from the internet it will be obvious. Write something special that the groom will remember.
- Dutch Courage – Drinking too much is asking for trouble, you could slur your words, and alcohol can intensify your nerves.
- Swear – It’s a mixed crowd, often with children and elderly attendees. Just steer clear.
- Inappropriate Jokes – Anything about ex-partners, intimate relationships or overly personal stories. It’s also best to leave the bride out of it, even if you are friendly with her.
Best Man Speech Jokes Opening Lines
Here is a list of quality opening lines to kick off your funny best man speech:
- “I was told my job today was to make [insert groom’s name] look good… So, unfortunately, I’ll need everyone to squint a bit and lower their standards.”
- “I asked [insert groom’s name] what he’d like me to say today, and he replied, ‘Just make sure you keep it short!’ Which, ironically, is what he said the first time he met his in-laws.”
- “I spent ages trying to write this speech, but my main problem was that every time I’d finish, [insert groom’s name] lawyer would get in touch.”
- “Before we get started, I’d like to thank the bar staff for their quick service today. Thanks to them, I have the confidence to stand up here.”
- “If you’re wondering why [insert groom’s name] chose me as his best man, just remember—he once thought it was a good idea to wear [insert bad item of clothing] to their first date.”
- “Well, I don’t want to take up too much of your drinking time, so I’ll keep this short.”
- “I’ve heard they’ve been running a bet on how long my speech will last. I’ve put £50 on half an hour, so strap in and get comfortable.”
- “If anybody here today is feeling nervous or sick, it’s probably because you’ve married [insert groom’s name].”
- “I’ve been told not to mention any of [insert groom’s name] mistakes or embarrassments, so thanks for listening everyone, that’s all from me!”
- “Attractive, smart, caring, an all-round great guy… but that’s enough from me, I’m here to give a speech about [insert groom’s name].”
This is a classic. Take the p*ss out of yourself, it will make the crowd laugh and win them over!
💡 Top tip from StagWeb: go light on these. It comes across as self-centred if you joke about yourself constantly.
- “As the best man, my main role is to be the responsible one today—so naturally, I’m the least qualified person here.”
- “[Insert groom’s name] said he wanted someone who’d make him look good… so here I am, making his life choices seem genius compared to mine.”
- “I’m actually quite nervous about public speaking, but at least I have something in common with [insert bride’s name]—neither of us knows what the groom was thinking by picking me.”
- “I’d love to say [insert groom’s name] picked me because of my wit, charm, and good looks, but, well, we all know that’s not the case.”
- “I’m actually surprised they handed me the mic. Usually, people just try to keep it out of my reach for everyone’s safety.”
Include some classic one-liners to keep the jokes punchy and help the speech flow:
- “Today we’ve seen two people exchange vows, rings, and a very awkward kiss in front of everyone they know.”
- “[Insert groom’s name] asked me for some marriage advice, so I told him to find someone who’s always right. And he did. Congrats to [insert bride’s name].”
- “Marriage is like a deck of cards—at first, all you need are two hearts and a diamond. After a while, you just wish you had a club and a spade.”
- “They say marriage is like a walk in the park… Jurassic Park.”
- “They say love is blind, but marriage is the real eye-opener!”
- “Marriage is finding that one person you can annoy for eternity and still be their favourite.”
- “We’ve reached the point in the proceedings when we all get to see [insert groom’s name] shift uncomfortably in his seat and grip the tablecloth. That’s right, I’ve just given him the drinks bill.”
- “I’ve been asked to keep this speech filth-free, so if I come across any innuendo, I’ll whip it out.”
- “This has truly been a day to remember. [Insert groom’s name] finally bought a round of drinks.”
- “I have been looking forward to today. After all this time, [insert groom’s name] has finally admitted I am the best man.”
Now, bold jokes are hilarious, if used correctly.
Don’t push it, keep it clean, and these will cause laughter without crossing the line:
- “You know, people say marriage changes you. I give it about three months before [insert groom’s name] is shamelessly wearing matching pyjamas.”
- “Today, [insert groom’s name] made the biggest decision of his life: deciding which of us friends are banned from his house due to ‘bad influence.’”
- “Before [insert groom’s name] met the bride, he used to say his best qualities were punctuality and responsibility. So naturally, today he arrived late… and asked me to keep track of the rings.”
- “Now, I promised the groom I’d keep this speech respectful and dignified… but that was before he handed me the bar tab.”
- “I’m not saying the groom was nervous about today, but he did Google ‘Can you get a refund on a wedding?’ last night.”
Best Man Speech Jokes About the Groom 🎩
Grilling the groom is essential for any best man speech jokes, so pick your favourites and let him have it!
- “Less is more, except in [insert groom’s name] case where less really is less.”
- “The fact that [insert bride’s name] agreed to marry [insert groom’s name] is proof that not only is love blind, it’s also tone-death and has no sense of smell.”
- “And for [insert bride’s name] intelligence really matters. I mean, let’s face it, she can’t be marrying him for his looks.”
- “The fact that he ever thought [insert bride’s name] would date him in the first place just goes to show that fortune favours the bold.”
- “[Insert groom’s name] is really like family to me. He’s like the little sister I never wanted.”
- “When I think of all the people I look up to and respect… you’d be right up there. Serving their drinks.”
- “We all know [insert bride’s name] is a wonderful person who deserves the perfect guy. Too bad you don’t always get what you deserve.”
- “As part of my best man research, it turns out I’m supposed to sing [insert groom’s name] praises and tell you about his qualities. Well, I’m sorry, but I can’t sing, and I won’t lie.”
- “So where do I start with [insert groom’s name]? Well, he’s handsome, intelligent, charming… sorry… [insert groom’s name] I’m having trouble reading your handwriting.”
- “I’m going to keep this speech like [insert groom’s name] – short, simple and not very funny.”
After charming the crowd, it’s time to close your speech like a legend.
Use these finishing lines for the grand finale:
- “As [insert groom’s name] best friend, I couldn’t be prouder of him today. He’s found someone who truly makes him better—let’s just hope [insert bride’s name] has the patience of a saint. Cheers!”
- “Before I finish, I’d like to give [insert bride’s name] some words of advice: if at first you don’t succeed, try doing it the way you told [insert groom’s name] to in the first place.”
- “Thank you for all being here to celebrate two incredible people. May your love grow stronger, and your patience with each other infinite.”
- “[Insert groom’s name] told me that the meal was charged per person, so on behalf of the bride and groom, I’d like to thank the following people for not coming…”
- “Please can everyone toast to the two young, well, quite young, people in love? To the happy couple!”
- “To [insert bride’s name] and [insert groom’s name], we all knew he found the one when he started spending more time with [insert bride’s name] than playing FIFA.”
- “Thank you for listening to my first, and probably last, best man speech. It’s been a pleasure to list [insert groom’s name] endless qualities… in such a short space of time.”
- “They say marriage is about facing challenges and overcoming them, so [insert bride’s name] has chosen well. [Insert groom’s name] will give her lots of those.”
- “A great marriage is where both secretly suspect they were dealt the better hand, which is unfortunate for these two!”
- “Here’s to [insert bride and groom’s names]—may your love be as deep as his pockets and as endless as her patience. Cheers!”
Jokes to Avoid ⚠️
Steer clear from these cliché, outdated, and cringe-worthy jokes or the speech will fall flat on its face:
- “It has been an emotional day, even the cake is in tiers.”
Why? It’s literally the “why did the chicken cross the road?” of the best man speech world.

Why? This joke has been used thousands of times before. Seriously, you can do better.

Why? Avoid mother-in-law jokes, you’re just playing with fire.
