So, you should definitely mention location, but, like in any other “Why This College?” essay, be sure to also describe how you will engage with the opportunities available because of Macalester in particular.

For example, if you’re interested in education or community outreach, you could mention your interest in Macalester’s Opportunities Abound: A Partnership for College Access Program (which ensures that local, low-income high school students in the Twin Cities have access to the information they need in order to make an informed decision regarding their futures).

Alternatively, if you are interested in the environment and sustainability, you could mention your interest in engaging with the organization Climate Generation: A Will Steger Legacy in Minneapolis during your free time in order to supplement your academic studies with impactful action.

For any “Why This College” essay, your goal is to convince the admissions officer that their school is the best fit for you, by intertwining your reasons for applying with your unique background and motivations. Therefore, it’s crucial that the reasons you provide for wanting to attend Macalester are school-specific. Generally, the more specific you can be, the more likely you are to seem genuinely interested and well-researched.

If you’ve been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to visit Macalester before writing your application, drawing on your own memories and experiences from your visit is a great way of enriching your essay. For example, you could talk about how the friendliness of the teenagers you asked for directions in the Twin Cities inspired your interest in the “Opportunities Abound” program mentioned above.

If you haven’t yet had the opportunity to visit campus, you can also strengthen your essay by researching Macalester’s core values, and ensuring that the values and traits you reveal about yourself are aligned with the college’s core values. Also keep in mind that supplemental essays should complement, not merely rehash, your main Common App essay, so make sure you’re providing new information to admissions officers.

While this prompt may seem a bit daunting at first, due to the unconventional angle into the “Why This College?” question, this essay should not be a cause for stress. You may notice that this is a version of the common diversity essay . So, to brainstorm, you want to consider which aspects of your identity are most important to who you are. Aspects of identity can include traditional markers such as ethnicity/race, gender, country of origin, and language. But don’t feel limited to those—your identity also includes things like your hometown, income class/socioeconomic status, illnesses/disabilities, and even interests and activities. In your response, you’ll want to show how the aspect you focus on will allow you to uniquely contribute to Macalester’s community.

A quick note if you intend to write about your racial background: in June 2023, the United States Supreme Court struck down the use of affirmative action in college admissions. The ruling, however, still allows colleges to consider race on an individual basis, which is one reason many schools are now including diversity prompts in their supplemental essay packages. So, if you feel that your racial background has impacted you significantly, this is a good place to talk about that, since schools are now legally banned from factoring your race into their decision in any other context.

Regardless of whether you write about your race or something else, remember to show, not tell—sharing an anecdote is the best way to bring your story to life. Think about times when your chosen trait was particularly relevant to your growth. For example, if you were raised in a family that blended multiple cultures, you might talk about how your grandparents visited from Pakistan every summer and gave you clothing as a gift, which helped you stay connected to their culture over the years.

Finally, the prompt specifically asks you to connect your life experiences to Macalester’s mission or learning environment, so do research on Macalester’s website to find things that resonate with you. For the above example, you could talk about how receiving gifts from your grandparents showed you the importance of making a concerted effort to connect with other cultures, so you will make sure to go out of your way to engage with your Macalester peers who come from different backgrounds than you.

Things to avoid:

• Complaining. While discrimination and negativity may be a part of your experience as part of a specific identity group, you don’t want to use this space solely to complain about experiences you’ve had. Frame your experiences as growth opportunities.
• Discriminating against other communities and identities. This is an opportunity for you to showcase what’s important and unique about you. There is no need to put other people down in order to tell your story.
• Simply listing aspects of your identity. Writing a list of traits without any elaboration will make your essay read like a generic laundry list.
• Choosing a clichéd topic like an immigrant story or traveling/moving. While these experiences may have been incredibly formative for you, they’re also some of the most overused tropes in college admissions, so it’s hard to make yourself truly stand out if you write about one of them.

Much like the Common App’s “Additional Information” section or the common “exceptional personal circumstances” prompt , this is an opportunity to explain any outliers on your transcript. While we typically highly recommend that applicants answer optional prompts, this question is truly optional, as it simply will not apply to everyone. If your grades were relatively consistent throughout high school, you should skip it. However, if your grades dropped or went up significantly at some point, this is your chance to explain why.

If you choose to answer this question, you can set yourself up for success with these tips:

• Be as direct and concise as possible. In some cases, grade fluctuations are due to factors outside your control, such as health or family issues. Explaining how these situations impacted your grades should be fairly straightforward. Or, perhaps you wanted a challenge and overextended yourself by signing up for too many AP classes or extracurriculars.
• Be careful not to make excuses. Admissions officers do not want to hear that you ended up with a C in Algebra II your junior year because you got that math teacher everyone hated. You never want to suggest that your poor performance in a class was someone else’s fault, as that may make admissions officers think you lack accountability.
• Show that you have grown and remained resilient. Instead of blaming teachers for your bad grades, a much better approach is to talk about how you remained positive, embraced the challenges presented to you, and ultimately learned from the experience. While we’d all love to apply to college with a perfect GPA, most of us don’t have that, and showing that you can respond to challenges in a mature, growth-oriented way can ultimately strengthen your application.

One of those publications is Thread Magazine, where Savannah has had the opportunity to work on articles related to world-wide related fashion news and events, as well as articles closer to home, such as a fashion piece on Athens hometown-hero Joe Burrow. Right out the gate, Macalester wants to know how you will use your environment to help you in your studies and beyond. So what really are they asking of you? First of all, start off with why you picked this college to apply to. If location was a factor, write about why. If not, you might want to look into the other two prompts before starting on this one. This could be a great prompt for individuals who have a specific major that would benefit from living near a city like Minneapolis or Saint Paul. 

If you are thinking about majors such as:

• Political Science, St. Paul is the state capital
• Economics, with many corporate offices stationed in Minneapolis (Target being one!)
• Art, with so many options for museums and galleries in the Twin Cities

Minneapolis is a great city for so many college majors, so show admissions that with examples relevant to you. Saint Paul would be another great urban setting for someone who wants to go into sociology or urban planning, or maybe even architecture.

Even if your major is not the reason Macalester’s location interests you, there are other elements of the prompt you can address here. Maybe you are drawn to Macalester for its small enrollment. If so, you could talk about how you are interested in a close knit community and that Macalester’s location allows you to experience that environment while also giving you access to a metropolitan area. Be sure to talk about how YOU would benefit from both the campus community and the opportunities in the Twin Cities.

“Four values permeate Macalester’s mission and purpose: academic distinction, internationalism, multiculturalism, and service to society. Guided by this mission, Macalester is a learning environment that affirms different identities and experiences and prepares graduates to work toward a more just and peaceful world. In what ways do your lived experiences, perspectives, or hopes for your college education connect with Macalester’s mission/learning environment?”

In order to successfully answer this prompt, try to think about any experiences that have had a significant impact on your life and made your perspective unique. Ultimately, they want to see that future students have a diverse background that can contribute to their mission and purpose. So, try to brainstorm aspects of your background or identity that mean a lot to you and that you are hoping to bring to your new Macalester community. Remember, it’s important to show, not tell! Sharing an anecdote is the best way to bring a story to life! Most importantly, be sure that you do not use this space as an opportunity to discriminate against other communities and identities! You should not put others down in order to make your story heard!

• How do you value academic distinction, internationalism, multiculturalism and service to society? What are some specific examples?
• What can you teach others about a certain culture, identity, ethnicity or community service that may introduce them to new ideas?

Optional Items

Macalester follows a Test-Optional admissions policy. Applicants can choose to submit ACT, SAT, AP, and IB exam scores as part of their application. 

Regardless of the presence of test scores, all applicants receive equal consideration for admission and scholarship opportunities. Choosing not to submit test scores will not disadvantage you in our selection process. 

Applicants who submit test scores to our office may self-report them through the Common Application, submit them to [email protected] , or request that official scores be sent to Macalester. Macalester’s testing codes are 2122 for the ACT and 6390 for the SAT.

If you have made a substantial commitment to the arts in the areas of fine arts, music, theater or dance, you are welcome to submit samples in your Macalester Applicant Portal after Macalester has received your application.

All students who apply for the QuestBridge National College Match scholarship may use their QuestBridge application to apply to Macalester.  Through the process of applying for the QuestBridge National College Match scholarships, applicants become one of four statuses—a National College Match Finalist, a Non-Matched Finalist, a Non-Ranking Finalist, or a Non-Finalist.

• National College Match Finalists:  Selected by QuestBridge to continue in the match process in September of a student’s senior year. Finalists can then rank up to 15 college partners in preferential order. Finalists who rank Macalester will be considered for the  College Match Scholarship . Matched Scholars are announced early December.
• Non-Matched Finalists:  Students selected by QuestBridge as Finalists but were not matched to Macalester or other college.
• Non-Ranking Finalists:  Students selected by QuestBridge as Finalists but elected not to participate in the College Match program.
• Non-Finalists:  Students who applied to the National College Match and did not meet the criteria for QuestBridge Finalists.

Macalester meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for all admitted students.  Whether applicants are Non-Matched Finalists, Non-Ranking Finalists, or Non-Finalists, they will be considered for merit scholarship and need-based aid provided they complete the FAFSA, CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE (CSS code: 6390) and submit parent federal income tax returns.

When you complete the required Macalester QuestBridge Finalist Supplement or the Macalester Application for QuestBridge Non-Finalists form, you will be able to indicate whether you would like your test scores considered.

Macalester defaults to whichever application you most recently submitted. Therefore, if you submit a Common Application, that will be considered in place of our QuestBridge application.

We want to emphasize that not matching through QuestBridge is more of a reflection of limited spaces in a highly competitive and selective process, and not your potential or ability to be successful at Macalester. We welcome you to continue in our admissions process through either Early Decision II or Regular Decision.

We do offer a chance to respond to our Supplemental Essay in the supplement form. For finalists, it is required; for non-finalists, it’s completely optional.

Our Analysis of the 2023-2024 Supplemental Essay Prompts

This year's batch of supplemental essay prompts was released on august 1st. here's what those prompts reveal about the changing priorities at colleges and universities..

Thanks to the perceived essay loophole Chief Justice Roberts’ Supreme Court decision language created—establishing that students can write about racial identity when tied to other experiences and characteristics—there has been much speculation that colleges would scramble to add diversity-related questions to their applications. Now that the Common App has reset for 2023-24, we can see colleges’ new supplemental questions. Did this bear out? So far, we’d say: yes. Yes it did. Here are a few overall trends and changes we’re noticing in the 2023-2024 supplemental essay prompts.

An increase in DEIB-related essays

This comes as no surprise. It’s important to note that many colleges already had prompts that asked students to reflect on their identities, on their communities, or on how they would contribute to diverse campuses; schools like Duke, Michigan, and Syracuse have included questions like this on their supplements for years now. But other schools have made notable changes since June’s decision: University of Miami, for example, replaced their question about the ibis (which, admittedly, we are not terribly sad to see go); American University scrapped their “why AU?”; and UVA retooled the essay questions they had only just retooled last year (even though UVA’s Dean J admitted she really liked last year’s version).

Here are the new versions of those schools’ supplemental essay questions:

University of Miami

“Located within one of the most dynamic cities in the world, the University of Miami is a distinctive community with a variety of cultures, traditions, histories, languages, and backgrounds. The University of Miami is a values-based and purpose-driven postsecondary institution that embraces diversity and inclusivity in all its forms and strives to create a culture of belonging, where every person feels valued and has an opportunity to contribute. Please describe how your unique experiences, challenges overcome, or skills acquired would contribute to our distinctive University community.” (max 250 words)

American University

“At American University, Inclusive Excellence is a cornerstone of the academic experience for our students, and we deeply value the learning that is inspired by the diversity of backgrounds and life experiences that all our community members bring with them. Please share why you would like to join this community.” (max 150 words)

All Applicants (300 words or less):

“What about your background, perspective, or experience will serve as a source of strength for you or those around you at UVA?”

More choice for students

Many colleges who have introduced new questions have included these questions as one of several choices. BU, for example, introduced a new question—“Reflect on a social or community issue that deeply resonates with you. Why is it important to you, and how have you been involved in addressing or raising awareness about it?”—but kept their classic “Why BU?” as an alternative option. Offering prompt choices—which schools like Tufts, Boston College, Villanova, Emory, and University of Richmond have done for quite some time—allows for students to write about their identities if they wish and on their own terms.

…Except at Harvard

As one of the defendants in the Supreme Court case, Harvard has lots of eyes on its post-SCOTUS decision making. Its response to the decision? Eliminating the previous optional (er, “optional”) essay and instituting five required essays. Very Harvard of them. And yes, one of them is directly about diversity:

“Harvard has long recognized the importance of enrolling a diverse student body. How will the life experiences that shape who you are today enable you to contribute to Harvard?”

Less emphasis on “why us?” essays

While this isn’t true everywhere, we saw a few surprising changes at some “why us?” stalwarts. Perhaps most notably, Tulane’s “why us?” essay—which, for many years, famously had an 800-word limit—is now a mere 250. And while last year Tulane had three different robust supplemental essay questions, now it’s just the one. Truly, our jaws are on the floor (yes, at this time of year, this counts as Very Exciting News. We essay editors don’t get out much in August). Equally shocking: no “why Indiana?” question for Indiana University in Bloomington. In fact, no supplement at all! That’s one way to lower the barrier to entry and boost application numbers (just ask Northeastern).

Supplemental Essay Type(s): Personal statement , Community

Application forms like this often require people to uncomfortably categorize their race, ethnicity, gender, or other identities by checking boxes. Is there anything about your (or your family’s) background that you would like us to know that is not addressed elsewhere in your application? If so, please elaborate.

This is a great opportunity to share the nuances of your background or family history with admissions. Has your family lived in the same town for multiple generations? Maybe you’re the first person in your family to go to college. Maybe you were raised by your mother and grandmother. Look back to how your upbringing shaped who you’ve become and what factors contributed to your unique perspective and position in life. Beyond your upbringing and family, the concept of your “identity” is up for interpretation. You can consider the different roles you play within your family, friend groups, or online community–mother-figure, coach, shoulder to cry on, etc–or you can reveal more of your inner-self, something people can’t see from a cursory glance at your application. This prompt is pretty wide open, so feel free to explore any area of your life that you haven’t gotten to talk about yet. Remember, though: this is a chance to advocate for yourself and show admissions why they’d be lucky to have you in their student body. 

Has there been a significant fluctuation in your grades at any point during grades 9-12 (up or down)? If so, please tell us the reason(s) for the changes.

Let us start by saying: This prompt is not for everyone. If your GPA has not dramatically increased or decreased during your high school career, move along. If, on the other hand, you’re thinking, “Yes! An opportunity for me to explain!” then read on.

Your transcripts are like Garfield Minus Garfield (if you don’t know what this is, you’re welcome). Sure, we can see that something’s changed from frame to frame, but we don’t know why. Grades need context. Admissions doesn’t know why or how things happened–good or bad. Take a look at your grades and note any anomalies or odd jumps/drops. Think back to that time in your life and tell your story. Maybe you’d moved schools or had a sports injury. Maybe you started meeting with a tutor after school and climbed from a fall semester C in geometry to a spring semester A. No matter your story, you are not alone in your journey of ups and downs–high school is a veritable war zone of distractions and possibilities. And, remember, everyone loves a comeback.
