Nelumbo nucifera or the Indian Lotus is native to Eastern Asia although its distribution ranges throughout the world in semi-tropical climate condition. It is predominant in the Indian subcontinent including India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar; but also very common in other south-east Asian countries like Bali, Indonesia, Malaysia etc. It is cultivated in Australia as well as in European countries for its aesthetic value. It is also found in Tropical parts of America. 

Lotus is an aquatic perennial herb that occurs in stationary water bodies like ponds and lakes. They prefer shallow, murky water in a warm climate. The stems, leaf stalks and roots are submerged while the leaves and flowers remain above the surface of water. 

Description

The lotus stem remains underground in the muddy soil at the bottom of the inhabiting water body. It modifies into a structure known as the rhizome which serves as both an anchoring device and storage organ. Roots are short and fibrous growing out in bunches from the stem internodes.

The lotus plants have simple leaves meaning one per leaf stalk. The stalks emerge upwards from the rhizomatous stem - are green, long, round and hollow. The stalks grow around 2-3 cm higher than the surface of the water holding up the flowers and leaves. The vasculature is porous enabling the stems and stalks to remain afloat in water. The upper surface of the leaves is waxy and impervious to water. 

The flowers are the key focus of the plant, and are large and showy, predominantly pink or white in color. The cone shaped central female reproductive structure is termed the thalamus which is framed by the delicate petals. The lotus bud resembles the shape of a tear-drop with pointy tip and tightly packed petals. The petals are translucent and open in overlapping spiral pattern. The flowers open in the morning and bloom for three days. The petals close after sunset trapping in the pollinating agents. The central yellow receptacle of the spongy thalamus contains the ovaries which develop into seeds after fertilization, and are embedded in single chambers along the surface.Seeds are hard, oval in shape and dark brown in color.

Cultivation Method

Lotus is cultivated throughout the world for the food value of the stems and rhizome as well as for the aesthetic value of the flowers. The plants are mostly propagated through seeds initially. The seeds are placed in damp soil and should be exposed to sunlight for at least 6 hours each day initially. Temperature of around 25-30°C should be maintained. 

Apart from its aesthetic value, the entire lotus plant is of considerable economic and medicinal value as well. Every part of the plant is consumable. The petals are often used for ornamental purposes like garnishing. The mature leaves are often used for packaging as well as serving food. In India, serving food on a lotus leaf is considered beneficial for health. The rhizome and leaf stalks are used as vegetables in most East Asian countries like China, Korea and Indonesia. The rhizome is boiled, sliced and fried, used in salads, pickled in vinegar. It is rich in fiber, contains Vitamins like B1, B2, B6, and C, essential minerals like potassium, manganese, phosphorous and copper. The lotus seed are also quite popular as nuts and are often eaten raw. They may also be fried or dry roasted to produce a sort of popcorn known as phool makhana. Lotus seed paste is a common ingredient in Asian desserts like mooncakes, rice flour pudding and daifuku.

The lotus has several curative properties in traditional medicine. The lotus tea brewed using the flower is used to relieve cardiac ailments. It also has detoxifying properties and helps stop blood flow in injuries. The lotus root is good for the general wellness of stomach and reproductive organs. It is good for healthy development of foetus during pregnancy. The lotus root is used in remedying health problems like throat complications and pigmentation problems in skin. It is also used to treat infections like small pox, and diarrhoea. The lotus seed is good for kidney and spleen. The lotus leaves are used to wrapping other food items and it helps preserve their freshness.

First of all, the lotus flower is the symbols of purity, beauty, majesty, grace, richness, knowledge, etc. Because of its significance and popularity, the lotus flower is the National Flower of  India .

In India, Lotus flower is also known as ‘Indian Lotus’ or ‘Sacred Lotus’. It is considered a remarkable creation of nature.

Lotus flower in Hinduism:  The lotus flower is pure and it has religious significance in Hinduism. As a result, it represents the energy of the human body which is known as chakra.

On the other hand, it is associated with wonderful spirituality. There are many  deities  who are associated with lotus. Such as Lakshmi who is the goddess of prosperity seated on a fully blossomed lotus. On the other hand, the Hindu god Brahma who was born from a lotus and that lotus was sprung from the navel of Lord Vishnu.

Significant of Lotus flower in Buddhism:  Buddhist believes that the lotus flower is the form of the principle of the  Eightfold Path . On the other hand, it is the highest teaching of Lord Buddha. In Buddhism lotus is the symbol of purity and it contains spirituality. They also believe that the lotus flower is pure than all other things. There are lots of lotus flower which have a different colour. As a result, Buddhist are using them for their religious purposes.

All the lotus have spirituality and religious symbol. The pink lotus is called as supreme lotus and serve the largest enlightenment. The blue lotus is the symbol of wisdom. The white lotus has perfect spirituality and the red lotus is known as the symbol of the heart. On the other hand, the significance of the purple lotus is  mysticism  and it is the representation of esoteric sects of Buddhism.

Conclusion:  Hence, the lotus flower has another significance. It is the nature of beauty. The Buddhist and Hindu people believe its spirituality and give respect.

Scientific name:  Nelumbo nucifera.

National flower of India:  Lotus (also Indian lotus, sacred lotus) is the national flower of India. It has received this recognition because of its Indian origin, its long association with our culture and also due to its usefulness. It is also known by several other names, such as the sacred lotus and the bean of India.

It is a beautiful flower with appealing color and fragrance. From very ancient time, we have been using lotus in one way or the other.

Habitat:  The Lotus is an aquatic (i.e. water dwelling) herb with floating leaves. It is found growing in shallow water of ponds, lakes, ditches. Occasionally it is cultivated in small pools in the gardens (lily pool).

Though it is an absolutely Indian flower and are widely cultivated in the elegant water gardens for which India is so famous. Besides India, it is also found in countries like China, Japan, Australia and tropical America.

Nature:  Lotus is a flowering plant.

Characteristic features

The characteristic features of its stem, leaf and flower are as follows:

Stem:  The stem of Lotus is fleshy and thick and is called rhizome, which grows in the mud at the bottom of water sources. It gives off bunches of roots to keep the plant anchored to the soil. Leaves develop from the nodes of rhizome. The rhizome can be used for propagation of Lotus.

Leaves:  Leaves of Lotus are simple and almost round with long, hollow, air-filled stalks (petiole) that give support to the leaf to float on the surface of water. The stalk may be up to 100 cm. long and is covered with tiny spikes called prickles. The diameter of the leaf may vary between 60 and 80 cm. The upper surface is bright green in color and glossy in appearance, while the under surface is reddish green in color.

Flower:  The flower appears singly on a long, spongy stalk covered with tiny spikes. The flowers are large, showy and light pink or white in color that usually remains high above the water surface. The flowers have numerous petals which are arranged on a spongy top-shaped disc called thalamus. The disc contains carpel which ultimately develops into fruits. The fruits remain embedded within the thalamus. When the fruits mature in the spongy part of the thalamus all the petals and stamens fall of and conical thalamus gets detached from the stalk. In due course the thalamus rots and the fruits containing the seed sink to the bottom of water and germinate into a new plant.

Seed:  Amazingly, seeds of one of these lotuses can live for more than a thousand years, making it a great symbol of an ancient culture.

The characteristic identifying features of Lotus are as follows:

• It is an aquatic herbaceous plant.
• It floats on the top of the water, whilst its roots, stem and stalk of flower remain under water..
• This beautiful pink and white flower has a glowing yellow center.
• The stem, known as rhizome, is thick and fleshy.
• Leaves are large, round, dark-green, smooth and shining. They remain floating.
• Flowers are large, showy with many boat-shaped petals. Flower and leaf-stalk are long with coarse surface.
• Fruits are large, triangular shaped, spongy containing many seeds.

Although Lotus is mainly regarded as an ornamental plant and its flowers are used for religious purposes, it has several other uses. Large leaves are used as plates for taking meals. The petiole, rhizome (stem) and seeds are used as food. Besides, they have medicinal values. Lotus honey is useful for treatment of various diseases of the eyes.

“The Lotus” is a gilded Petrarchan sonnet.  It exhibits Toru’s remarkable sensitivity to nature and colour. We come into many instances where we struggle for “positions” that may or may not be legitimate. This poem can be read in such a way that one should observe and accept both the positive and negative qualities. When the favourable traits are weighed and linked, we get an admirable quality. This poetry has a moral. It informs us.

The lotus has long been a favourite flower of Indian gods and goddesses. This flower is adored by both Lord Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi. In modern times, various awards have been named after the lotus, including the Padamshri, Padam Bhushan, and Padam Vibhushan.

Toru Dutt considers the lotus to be the most perfect flower in terms of colour and appearance. In the style of a beauty pageant, the poet portrays a Conflict <strong>Conflict</strong>: the struggle between two opposing forces that is the basis of the plot.1) internal conflict character struggling with him/her self,2) external conflicts – character struggling with forces outside of him/her self. At this fraction of flowers, the god of love appeared to Flora, goddess of flowers and spring, and asked her to produce a flower “as delicious as the rose” and “stately as the lily in her pride.” Flora develops a flower by merging the traits of a rose and a lily as a result. Introduction:

“The Lotus” is a poem written by Toru Dutt. It is a poem that brings out the significance and pride of Indian culture. 

About the Poet:

This poem follows the structure of a Petrarchan sonnet and thus consists of 14 lines, divided into an octave of 8 lines and a sestet of 6 lines. 

Analysis and Summary:

As in all Petrarchan sonnets, in the octave, the main problem of which flower is best is introduced. The two flowers mentioned in this octave have a deep connection with the two goddesses mentioned. Lily is said to have been created with the breast milk of the virginal Roman goddess Juno upon the birth of her son Mars while Rose is said to have originated as a result of the lovemaking of Greek goddess Psyche and Cupid. 

Here, Love asks for a new flower that has the qualities of both a rose and a lily. Upon Flora’s question on the desired colour of this flower, Love first replied “Rose-red”, then “lily-white” before settling on a blend of both the colours. Upon this, Flora provides the lotus, “the queenliest flower that blows.”

In the sestet, the resolution for the previous problem is attained. The new queen of flowers is declared to be the lotus, whose colour is of both the lily and the rose. Crowing the lotus as the queen is a move by the poet to shed light on the significance of India’s national flower, even as she rejects the classical notions of beauty in flowers. 

Conclusion:

This is a lovely sonnet. Through the lotus, it exquisitely brings out the beauty of Indian culture.

While the number of essays HEC Paris wants you to submit as part of its MBA application might initially be daunting, you should view them as a wonderful opportunity to share aspects of your whole self in telling your story. The adcom is looking to gain insight into your hopes, dreams, and accomplishments and into who you are as a person. They want to see that you are a well-rounded individual. They look beyond what you’ve done to assess how you think and respond, even how you imagine. 

Most importantly, HEC requires you to communicate complex thoughts and experiences directly. Don’t worry about waxing poetic here – you can approach the shorter essays in particular in a straightforward and succinct way. (But take care not to go over the word limit!) Jump right into your point or story, and use clear sentences without  (e.g., “had the opportunity to”). Don’t hesitate to use direct, declarative sentences. This writing approach has an added benefit: it conveys confidence.

Before you start writing your essays, sit down and brainstorm. Sketch out ideas for all of the school’s essays so that when you go to write them, you can tell a full story. After putting the puzzle pieces of your story together in an outline, step back to assess how the facets add up as a whole, and adjust topics as necessary to avoid redundancy and ensure a well-rounded presentation – one that will make the adcom feel they must invite you for an interview!

Why are you applying to the HEC MBA Program now? What is the professional objective that will guide your career choice after your MBA, and how will the HEC MBA contribute to the achievement of this objective? (500 words maximum)

This is a traditional goals question , with a couple of twists. Your best bet is to answer these questions in order and in a direct fashion. Don’t overthink it. Tell the adcom why you want an MBA now, what your goals are, and why you want to attend HEC. Follow this approach: 

• First, the “why now” part should be explicitly addressed, even if it seems obvious. Doing so briefly is fine; your overall essay should ultimately make this case.
• Second, your “professional objective” is essentially your long-term career vision. The question implies that this vision or goal will drive your preceding steps, so present your shorter-term goals in that context: show how they pave the way for you to pursue and achieve your ultimate professional objective.
• Be brief but specific when discussing the HEC MBA. Tie aspects of its program directly to the achievement of your goals, and detail the two or three elements of the program that are most meaningful to you.

Finally, connect the dots. If well done, this essay will convey how your goals grow organically from your experience and are achievable given your previous experience and an MBA from HEC.

What do you consider your most significant life achievement? (250 words maximum)

Because you’re applying to a professional degree program, it can be tempting to write primarily or exclusively about your work experiences and goals – don’t. Here, HEC wants to learn about you as a person, so don’t tell them about the biggest deal or project you completed. Imagine, for example, that you state that boosting your organization’s bottom line (by whatever amount) is your greatest life achievement. The adcom might wonder about your values or whether you really have a life! On the other hand, if you can say that at work you saved jobs or lessened negative environmental impacts or were instrumental in developing a new medical advancement, that would be more substantial and could possibly fit the bill. Or, if moving to another country and building your career there has been your biggest achievement, that’s fine – but talk about the situation in a way that gives context to the impact on your life, rather than focusing on the work itself. 

For most people, this story will be personal. I think about clients who have persevered through, managed, and overcome major family crises. For others, it will involve impact with community, religious, and/or social organizations or groups; for yet others, it could involve a major milestone, such as a national sports ranking or photo exhibit or music performance.

Whatever topic you select, you have only 250 words, so simply narrate the story , and include the results or impact. It would be fine to have a sentence or two of reflection on why the experience is so meaningful to you, but don’t make a long explanation. The reason should be clear from the content.

Leadership and ethics are inevitably intertwined in the business world. Describe a situation in which you have dealt with these issues and how they have influenced you. (250 words maximum)

It feels like we hear about a new scandal in the business world on a daily basis, so that ensuring students have a fundamental grasp on business ethics is becoming increasingly important for MBA programs. HEC wants to make sure you have a strong moral compass when it comes to business, so even though you might not have had the level of seniority that would impact a major business crisis at this point in your career, no doubt you’ve had myriad opportunities to do the right thing when presented with an alternative. 

Again, keep the structure of your essay simple: tell the story, and end with a brief discussion of how the experience has influenced you. Don’t feel the need to present an overly dramatic story; many such situations are gray, not black and white. It might feel like a challenge to identify an experience that encompasses both leadership and ethics. However, addressing an ethics challenge will almost inherently require leadership (even if informal), whether on your part or someone else’s. When you explain how the situation influenced you , don’t just state generalities; give a specific example.

Imagine a life entirely different from the one you now lead, what would it be? (250 words maximum)

This essay is another opportunity to reveal a different side of yourself. I would use this as a chance to talk about something you are passionate about, such as a hobby or interest. If you’re not sure how to answer this, think about what you loved to do when you were a kid or something you have always wanted to learn or do.

Describe an imagined life that reflects something meaningful to you . Make it vivid, and show your passion . Note that the question does not ask what you would do if you were not in your current life/role; it asks you to imagine a life. Use that openness to express your creativity. In doing so, however, avoid being abstract. Weave in and employ your actual knowledge and experience; for example, if you love sports and are an avid athlete, you could build your imagined life in a way that portrays your knowledge and passion there. The reader should learn something interesting about you and your prospective contribution to the social milieu of the HEC program. 

Please choose from one of the following essays: (250 words maximum)

a) What monument or site would you advise a first-time visitor to your country or city to discover, and why? b) Certain books, movies or plays have had an international success that you believe to be undeserved. Choose an example and analyze it. c) What figure do you most admire and why? You may choose from any field (arts, literature, politics, business, etc.).

All these options are equally good, so choose the one that resonates most with you – the one that you want to answer. This is another opportunity to showcase your interests and passions. The “why” part is key. Avoid platitudes, be specific, and present focused, fresh insights.

Is there any additional information you would like to share with us?(900 words max)

This question invites you to explain anything that needs explaining (e.g., a gap in employment, choice of recommender, a bad grade) as well as to present new material that will enhance your application. If you choose to do the latter, make sure that what you offer contributes to a clear and full picture of your candidacy. The school gives you a lot of words to work with, but don’t think that you must use all 900! As with any essay, convey what you need to without excess.
