Is a Bursary a Scholarship?

Yes and no. A bursary does not have to be repaid with money, making it similar to a scholarship. However, since most bursaries require a student to fulfill a work contract, the labor hours may be considered “repayment.” In that case, the bursary is more like a loan than a scholarship. Bursary programs and work-study programs are similar and often considered interchangeable. During a work-study program, a student works at a school or company in exchange for financial aid. Include the address for the bursary issuer in the top left corner of the application letter. You may also include the date of application and your name with contact information.

Begin the letter with “Dear Sir or Madam,” “To whom it may concern,” or “Dear {Name of specific person reading the application, if known}.”

In the first paragraph, concisely explain the purpose of the application. This should only be two to three sentences in length, with a clear thesis stating “I am applying for the XX bursary program to help fund my YYY degree pursuit in {year}” (or something similar).

The next paragraph should explain your educational path, including your current degree, personal achievements and plans you have for future education, like a graduate degree. This section should also be limited to three sentences because the bursary issuers will see a number of similar applications. Cover the point and move on.

The third paragraph should explain your career plans and how they connect with your degree and education. This section can be longer than the last because it reflects your personal goals. Explain how the bursary will help you cover the cost of your degree and what you plan to use the funds for. You may add something about the circumstances that led to your financial need, such as a family hardship, but do not focus on that too much. The main emphasis should be on plans for future success, not tales of past struggles.

Conclude your bursary application letter with a short paragraph expressing your gratitude for the opportunity and appreciation for consideration. Sign the letter with “Sincerely” and your name.

Additional Tips for Writing a Bursary Application Letter

Now that you know how to write a bursary application letter, here are some tips to keep in mind:

• Cover as much as you can with as few words as possible. The review committee will skim through dozens of applications, so you want to grab their attention as quickly as possible.
• Avoid filler words like very, really and just. Replace them with specific modifiers that convey your thoughts clearly and concisely.
• Make the application letter personal rather than generic. This is because generic letters are easy to forget. Include plans to work for a specific organization or solve a problem you have seen/experienced. Show the bursary committee that their funding will contribute to a much greater plan.
• Use a professional tone without sounding stiff. This is a serious process, but it should also be viewed as a letter-based interview. Write it as if you were speaking to an employer or professor.
• Think carefully about why you need the bursary and why you deserve the funds. If you believe in yourself and your intentions, you will have an easier time conveying that to the review board.

Example Bursary Application Letter

To Whom It May Concern, I am applying for the University of Michigan bursary program to assist me in funding my political science degree in 2016. I have paid the fees for the first year but unfortunately, my family is not in a position to continue to afford the fees for my college tuition. I am currently enrolled at your college as a sophomore, pursuing my bachelor of arts degree in political science. During high school, I was a member of the debate team from my freshman to senior year. We took home first place in the national Tournament of Champions debate during my senior year while I was serving as the captain of the team. Following the completion of my bachelor’s degree, I plan to attend law school and pursue my JD. I am a hard working student and my education is very important to me. During my freshman year of college, I was part of the Sooner Freshman Council and currently, I am serving as Director of Student Organizations. I have been a member of the debate team since freshman year. In the future, following the completion of my law degree, I would like to work as a lawyer and one day I hope to work as a federal judge. HOW TO APPLY FOR A BURSARY OR STUDENT LOAN IN ZAMBIA

THE HIGHER EDUCATION LOANS and SCHOLARSHIPS BOARD (HELSB) LOGO 

Many high school graduates have trouble on how to apply for a student loan or bursary as some still call it. It's actually a straight forward process and by the end of this article, you'll be good to go!

Just follow these simple steps

1. Apply at the university of your choice.

Note: Make sure that your University of choice is among the universities that has its students given loans by the Higher Education loans and Scholarship Board's ( HELSB ).

2. If you get accepted, wait for the advertisement of the loan from the HELSB. You can follow their Facebook page and keep a regular check on it.

3. After the advert is out, collect the recommendation letter from your former school and from your local church or councilor. You can also get one from your secondary school sponsor(s) if you had any.

4. Write an application letter for a loan, state the percent (%) you want and why you want it. Don't type it, it should be in a handwritten format. Here is a sample of the letter

5. Make copies of the documents which you're going to submit as photocopies to the HELSB office. These documents are; your Admission letter, your ECZ certified grade 12 results/certificate, your parents/guardians NRCs and your NRC and the supporting documents if any.)

6. After making copies of of the above mentioned documents, take them to the police, court for verification ( stamping ) and don't forget to go with your original documents. The charges vary and are dependent on the police post.

7. Go to NATSAVE bank and buy an application form at k150 and carefully  fill in the form.

8. Arrange the recommendation letters, your application letter, the application form together with 2 passport sized photos and the stamped documents mentioned above. Don't attach them, you are only going to attach them when they tell you the order to follow upon submitting.

9. Take all the mentioned documents for submission. For those in Kitwe, submit at CBU, those in Lusaka submit at the HELSB main office and for those who are not in the mentioned areas, you can send the documents through the Post Office. You can also submit your documents at any NATSAVE branch.

Note: as long as you have a university admission letter and you're a zambian aged below 24 you stand a chance of being given a loan. But since it's only limited to a few number of people they have the criteria which they follow. As long as you're qualified just apply, and leave everything in the hands of the HELSB. Don't worry about the cut off point just try your lucky.

Ans. The advert is usually published a few days after the university publishes its list of successfull applicants.

2. What is the cut off point to be given a loan?

Ans: Just apply if you are qualified.

3. What if you are not in Lusaka or Copperbelt how can you submit?

Ans: You can send your documents through the Post Office.

4. When writing an application letter, should you address it to University?

Ans: No, your University has nothing to do with the loans. The address is given by HELSB through their memo.

Up to this point, my studies have been funded by a grant from a local Anothertown business, Deegan & Sons. However, they had some financial setbacks, and were recently put into receivership. I was informed at the end of March that they would not be able to continue my study grant next year. (See Annexure 2(b).) Without finding a way of funding my 3rd year, I shall not be able to graduate in 2022 as planned.

ISW Internship Program Overview

ISW is offering remote, hybrid, and in-person internships for Fall 2024. Instructions to apply for the scholarship are below.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) is committed to training the next generation of national security leaders through its innovative educational programs. ISW seeks motivated and experienced college students or recent graduates to join our intern team. ISW offers internships across diverse research portfolios and departments, including Russia, China, and Iran’s proxy networks. ISW also offers internships in National Security & Intelligence Analysis and in non-profit management, including Business Development and Editorial.

ISW believes that ground realities must drive the formulation of strategy and policy. In pursuit of this principle, ISW conducts detailed open-source intelligence analysis to provide timely and accurate information on current conflicts and security threats directly to policy-makers and warfighters.

Interns at ISW have an unparalleled opportunity to analyze conflicts in ways that directly inform policymakers on some of the most pressing issues facing American national security. Our interns work directly with analysts. They receive classroom education, regular leadership engagement, and a chance to work with cutting-edge technologies employed in business and the intelligence community. Interns have the opportunity to stand at the front lines of military research and policy development, tackling the latest crises in the headlines.

The ISW Internship Program is one of three core education programs housed within The General David H. Petraeus Center for Emerging Leaders, launched to identify, educate, and develop the future cadre of leaders committed to America’s national security. ISW views interns as an integral component of its team. ISW has worked with interns to draft, edit, and publish their own research under the mentorship of senior analysts. It has also hired many interns onto its staff.

Geospatial Intelligence and National Security Technologies Internship : ISW uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing technologies to improve research collection, intelligence analysis, and visualizations. Interns will use Geographic Information Systems (GIS), satellite remote sensing, data visualization, and Python coding skills to help refine how ISW’s analysts implement these cutting-edge tools. This internship provides practical hands-on experience using GIS in national security and intelligence applications. Interns will support data collection, analysis, and visualizations that support ISW’s world-renowned maps. Interns may also have valuable interactions with software partners who are transforming the national security space. Interns will receive further training on some of these platforms. ISW’s roster of technology partners includes Neo4J, Babel Street, Ntrepid, and Planet Labs, among many others. This is a full-time internship (five days per week), but part-time work will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Qualifications

• Candidates must be motivated and organized college students or recent graduates with demonstrated expertise in a related field;
• Candidates must possess excellent writing, editing, and oral communication skills;
• Candidates must possess strong capabilities in GIS software such as Esri’s ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, or ArcGIS Online. Experience with QGIS or Google Earth, or remote sensing is a plus. Experience with a programming language such as Python, JavaScript, or HTML; or web development experience with HTML or JavaScript is a plus.
• Candidates must display the ability to conduct complex tasks in a timely and efficient manner;
• Candidates should be self-motivated, independent, creative, and capable of working in a dynamic and fast-paced environment;
• Candidates will preferably have a demonstrated interest or expertise in national security issues, particularly Russia, Ukraine, China, or issues in the Middle East;
• Candidates must show commitment to—and interest in—the core mission and values of ISW.

Fall 2024 Internship Program Dates: ISW internships start September 10, 2024. The program will run until December 13. Interns must both be authorized to work in the United States and be physically present in the United States during their internship tenure. Working remotely outside of the United States is not authorized. If you attend a US university on a student visa, you must be eligible for and obtain a CPT authorization before beginning at ISW . Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until August 2.

Instructions: Please upload your resume, cover letter, and writing sample. Your cover letter and writing sample should be no longer than five pages combined; the writing sample can be excerpted from a longer paper.

ISW will work with students to gain academic credit for internships where applicable.

ISW Scholarship Application

The Institute for the Study of War will offer intern candidates up to a $1,000 monthly living stipend as part of a scholarship program.* To be considered for the scholarship, candidates must upload a scholarship application as part of their internship application. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until August 2, 2024.

Candidates will be assessed based on the following criteria:

• Ability to contribute as a member of one of ISW’s research, operations, business development, or external relations teams; and
• Financial need, such that an unpaid internship would not be possible without assistance.

To be considered for the scholarship, candidates must upload a scholarship application as part of their internship application.

Within the scholarship application, candidates should upload a 2- to 3-page cover letter which answers each of the following questions. (This should be a different cover letter than the one used for the internship application itself.)

• Which ISW internship is your top choice? Why do you believe you are qualified?
• What do you believe to be the most pressing national security problem the US faces today? What solution(s) would you propose?
• Where do you see yourself in your future career? How will an ISW internship help you get there?
• Why have you chosen to apply for this supplemental scholarship?
• Are you currently receiving federal financial aid and/or need-based aid from your university? Feel free to describe using as much detail as you are comfortable.

*Please note that the up to $1,000 monthly scholarship is classified as taxable income.

Studying at a tertiary level is an expensive business, and most South African students need financial help to do so. Getting a bursary from a reputable organization is often the only way of funding your further education.

What is a bursary and who is eligble?

A bursary is a form of financial assistance for students who aren’t able to fund their studies on their own. Bursary funds are made available in South Africa by universities, colleges, tertiary education facilities, and many other organisations and companies. They can help to cover the school fees, educational expenses and sometimes other living expenses.

Bursaries usually come with a contract and entail certain conditions. Often you’ll be expected to work for the company or organisation giving you the bursary for a certain period of time after you graduate.

You’ll be expected to apply for the bursary program by completing an application form and many organisation may also as for a cover letter on why you should be selected. The motivational letter you write to the institution offering the bursary  is important  as it can materially affect your chances of getting the bursary award. It needs to be of high quality but you should not let the thought of writing a letter put you off sending the bursary application letter. Remember there is never a perfect candidate and simply by applying greatly improves your chances! 

Tips on writing an effective motivational letter for bursary

An important point to bear in mind is that the organisation will get many letters from students applying for the bursary. You want yours to stand out and grab their attention. Keep these tips in mind:

• Your letter must have a  personal, engaging and interesting  tone, and you must sound sincere and genuine. At the same time, you need to sell yourself and talk about your personal achievements. 
• Be completely  honest  about your financial situation, why you need the bursary and what your  goals and aspirations  are. 
• The language and presentation  of your letter must be meticulous.  Proofread, proofread, proofread  – even a single typo or spelling error is too much!  Replace filler words like ‘just’, ‘really’ and ‘very’ with specific modifiers. Be  precise  and avoid long, meandering sentences.
• Keep your tone polite, a  professional and formal tone , without sounding stilted. Avoid familiarity, undue ‘chattiness’ and slang. Look out for any  spelling mistakes .
• Make sure that you include  all  the information requested, i.e. your academic results, personal information, contact details and documents requested.
• Write about any previous experience you might have in your motivation letter, they want to at least see the candidate know what skills are required for the challenge ahead, the same as you would for a job application.
• Assure the organisation of your commitment, career goals and that you’ll work hard to meet all the requirements and expectations they set. 

How to structure a bursary  motivational  letter

A letter of motivation will vary considerably according to every student’s individual circumstances, but here’s a good generic format: 

• Your name, contact information and the date go in the top left-hand corner of the application letter. If you are a current student at the institution, include your student number.
• Follow this by the name and address of the organisation offering the bursary
• Then a subject line stating which bursary you are applying for.
• To Whom It May Concern
• Dear Mr/Mrs/Dr, followed by the name of the person who’ll be reading it if you know who it is.
• Paragraph one must briefly and clearly explain the purpose of the application, i.e. “I am applying for the — bursary you offer to help me fund my — degree/certificate/qualification in —. 
• Academic achievement and results
• Your current degree and what year you’re in if you’re already studying. 
• Use the third paragraph to discuss your career plans, personal goals, and how the bursary will help you to fund your studies.
• Give a few details about why you need the bursary, but don’t elaborate too much. 
• Finally, express your gratitude and appreciation for the opportunity and state your commitment to working hard. 
• Sign the letter with ‘Yours sincerely’ and your name

I am currently enrolled in my second year at your university for a BA in Media Studies and Communication. I have found the course interesting, rewarding and both challenging and thought-provoking, and have been doing well so far. I would like to apply for your bursary for the third year (2022) of my degree as my financial circumstances have unfortunately changed recently.

My academic results at the end of my first year were as follows:

I have always enjoyed language and communication and intend to find a position in the media and communication field after I graduate. I have on several occasions done vac work at the  Townsomewhere Gazette  and really enjoyed it. During the recent June/July holidays they put me in charge of arranging a media event for them. I’m delighted (and  relieved !) to say that it went very well. I attach a copy of the complimentary letter Mr Dan Brooks, the editor, wrote to me after the event.  

My first and second-year studies were funded by an uncle who was also my godfather since my parents died when I was 10. He sadly passed away towards the end of May this year, and my aunt will not be able to fund my final year of study.  I do have a small amount of my own money saved up, but it isn’t enough for my tuition next year. Your bursary would make the difference between graduating next year or having to work for some time to save the money to complete my studies.

May I please emphasise that my education is extremely important to me? I also believe that as a writer and journalist one can make a difference to society and I’m passionate about doing so. If you would kindly grant me the bursary, I can assure you of my continued commitment and best efforts in my studies and in the future.

I am currently enrolled at the University of the Witwatersrand as a 2nd-year student in Geology. I have found the course utterly absorbing so far and am totally committed to completing my BSc. However, my financial circumstances have recently changed adversely, so I will not be able to do so as things stand now. I, therefore, wish to apply for your bursary and trust that I will be considered favourably.

My subjects this year are Applied Geology II, Mining Geology II, Metamorphic Petrology and Hydrogeology. I hope to continue with Applied Geology III and Mining Geology III next year, as well as a sub-major in Structural Geology.

I have always been inquisitive and passionate about rocks, mineralogy and the natural geological world. I love to travel, do geology-related research and working outdoors. My Estwick rock pick is my inseparable friend! I wish to work in mineralogy and rock strata research one day. 

I did some work shadowing in July last year at your field office in Graskop in Mpumalanga, and wish to give Dr Grace Radebe as a referent in this regard. (See Annexure 4). I found Dr Radebe’s fieldwork fascinating, insightful and challenging, and would wish to intern at your Institute in the very future.  

Up to this point, my studies have been funded by a grant from a local Anothertown business, Deegan & Sons. However, they had some financial setbacks, and were recently put into receivership. I was informed at the end of March that they would not be able to continue my study grant next year. (See Annexure 2(b).) Without finding a way of funding my 3rd year, I shall not be able to graduate in 2022 as planned. 

If you consider my bursary application favourably, I wish to assure you that I will work even harder to meet all my study and any other commitments you may set me. My education is incredibly important to me and I love my field of study. I will not let you down.
